Ten man Devils side show hearth
The Red Devils Of York lost their Round 4 Division 3c clash with FC Sachsen Leipzig 4-3.  It was a spirited performance by the Red Devils who pushed the divisional leaders to the limit.  Manager Mr Shephunter will take great heart from the game given it was on foreign soil, they played with 10 men for two thirds of the game and their opponents had conceded just the 1 goal from their opening 3 games.

It only took 2 minutes to realise that referee Will Taykabribe was going to be total jerk during the game and force his authority.  He handed Broderick Hutton a yellow in the 2nd minute for arguing. Strangely Hutton was arguing with his teammate Dragan Zunic.

It looked like the Red Devils had opened the scoring in the 8th minute when Shaqeel van Persie chipped over the goalkeeper's head but he was clearly offside.  An easy call for the assistant.

Although it didn't go on the scoreboard, the disallowed goal gave the Red Devils confidence.  Just 3 minutes later Mumtaz Mansiz made the score 1-0 when he was put into space by Dylan Dolan. He slotted the ball to the left of the keeper with consumate ease.

It didn't take like for Leipzig to strike back.  In the 18th minute Armand Lambert sent a cross in for Juanito Tuzzio who nodded in at the near post.

In the 25th minute Red Devils defender Simone De Bruno went down holding his ankle.  De Bruno who has had a history of ankle problems was subbed out of the game as a precaution.  That meant the young but talented Rufus Cadbury entered the game.  This would place the Red Devils under increased pressure.

Things went from bad to worse for the Red Devils when defender Silviu Blaga was given a straight red for a crude and stupid act.  Right in front of the referee he headbutted Lambert.  With just 3 at the back and 1 of them being a kid, the Red Devils would surely come under immense attack.

As would be expected with a man advantage, Leipzig went on the attack.  In the 15 minutes leading up to the break they had a large share of possession.  Thankfully they were unable to convert that into goals.  The half time break couldn't come soon enough for the Red Devils.

Whatever Mr Shephunter said to his side at half time was obviously lost on them as Leipzig scored just after the resumption.  Following a corner Torben Lovskog scored the first of his 3 goals from a dazzling set play.

In the 51st minute the Red Devils showed that they're no mugs at fancy plays either.  They were awarded a free kick which Dragan Zunic faked before tapping it to Broderick Hutton who let fly with a scorcher.  It was like it was fired from a cannon and the keeper stood no chance.  The scores were back level at 2 a piece.

Despite the goal Hutton was replaced in the 71st minute after coming under heavy attention.  Mr Shephunter hoped Evan Cronan could find some space up front.  An injury again halted the progress of the Red Devils.  In the 78th minute Nobuhisa Harasaki elbowed Mansiz and he was forced from the field with a busted snot box.  Again a junior player was the replacement for the Red Devils.

With 10 minutes to go both sides were looking for the go ahead goal.  Of course the referee wanted to get involved being a look at me kind of guy.  He award Leipzig a penalty in the 82nd minute which Lovskog obligingly converted.

Adding to the drama the referee awarded another penalty.  This time to the Red Devils.  Emanuel Rangel made no mistake and the scores were locked again at 3 all.

With an imaginable draw looking likely, the unthinkable happened.  Lovskog scored his hattrick goal in the 89th minute to sink the hopes of the Red Devils and win the game for his side 4-3.

Mr Shephunter was both pleased and disappointed with the result.  "It was a tremendous effort to only go down in the final minutes of the game after playing with 10 men and suffering the injuries we did.  However I'm really mad with Blaga for getting sent off.  We may have won this game if we'd had the full compliment of players.  Oh well it will add character to this team and we'll be waiting for them when they come to our home."
