Honey Badgers Go Clear At Halfway Point
The Cummins Honey Badgers have made it to the halfway point of the season undefeated.  On the back of a strong defense, the Honey Badgers have managed a record of 6 wins and a draw from their 7 games.  Following their 2-1 win over Darlo Denes this week they are now 5 points clear at the top of the table.

With both teams sporting strong midfields this was always going to be a tough contest.  Darlo Denes' chances suffered a major blow just 10 minutes into the game when key midfielder Mauro Porta suffered a side strain and was replaced by a younger but none the less talented player.

Possession was going back and forth.  One team would control the ball for 5 to 10 minutes before the other would gain the advantage.  Midway through the first half the play started to sway towards the Honey Badgers.  In the 31st minute they opened the scoring.  Mumtaz Mansiz put a beautiful pass on for Broderick Hutton who brilliantly beat the offside trap.  Hutton had created a one on one with the keeper who didn't know if he was coming or going.  With the keeper in a splits position, Hutton blasted the ball through his legs and into the back of the net.

Half time came around very quickly.  Mr Shephunter felt his side had gained a slight edge of their opponents but drummed into his players that they needed to go right to the final whistle.

Shortly after the resumption of play, the Honey Badgers extended their lead to 2-0.  In the 51st minute Dylan Dolan who had come under some heavy attention managed to find some rare space.  He found captain Emanuel Rangel with a deadly accurate pass that disected 3 players.  Rangel didn't get all the ball with his shot which actually helped him beat the keeper.  The travelling fans were in raptures with the 2-0 lead.

It didn't take long for Darlo Denes to strike back.  In the 58th minute they were awarded a penalty.  Their goalkeeper Per Bjorngren stepped up and casually beat his opposite number.  The scoreboard now read 2-1 and you could see nerves entering the Honey Badger players.

Darlo Denes were coming on strong.  With time getting away from them they were attacking like demons.  Thankfully for the Honey Badgers their shots were failing to find the mark.

In the 78th minute gasps went along the Honey Badgers bench.  Midfield maestro Shaqeel van Persie went down in a screaming heap clutching his leg.  He was forced to leave the field but thankfully he'll be right for the return fixture in a week's time.  However in the present, the loss of a midfielder like van Persie could prove costly.

However it didn't and the final whistle blew with the Honey Badgers surviving a spirited fight back from their rivals.  The Honey Badgers had well and truly earned the 3 points.

Mr Shephunter was pleased with the hard fought win.  "Yeah really happy with that result.  We knew these guys would be tough and so they were.  I thought we played particularly well when placed under pressure.  It was an important win today as it moved us 5 points clear at the top of the table.  We've reached the halfway point in good shape and will attack the 2nd half with vigour."
