Our legacy......? |
Disappointment? Frustration? Failure?
All of the above come to mind when we look back at our seven year career with this team. Did we have a lot of fun along the way, did we enjoy the ride? Did we achieve some success? Hell yeah we did. But in the end, immortality in football is about one thing. Trophies. And our empty cabinet is testament to our defeat.
We're at a crossroads now. This saturday, Serban Câmpeanu, our 19 skill freekick taker will be sold. He was put on the market the other day on a whim for a fraction of his value (a decision we immediately regretted), but it's a necessary part of the plan. I'm proud of him though. We can confidently say he was one of only a handful of 16/6 FK takers who have been dished out over the years in X11, and he has achieved greatness over his tenure. A 19/10 skiller in his youth, he's singlehandedly won games for us over the seasons, but his time is up.
So what went wrong? We made a great rise up the ranks in our history. We can proudly say that our record was untarnished for 14 seasons when we took over a broke, low skilled team and managed to have them finish in at least as good a position as the season before every single season until we reached the Super League.
Then it happened. Maybe it was a matter of timing. We had a string of second place finishes in the league. We've been referred to as the "serial runner-up" many times in official press releases. But when it came down to it, timing your run to the top to coincide with arguably the best team/manager this game has ever seen is always going to end in tears. And once ShadowsDT and his impressive KBM Whitsunday squad ended their reign, Blu3red was kind enough to step into his shoes and deny us again.
We have to take part of the blame. Our tactics were not always the best, and our waning motivation for the game meant we squandered many opportunities, but in the end, all we can do is look back across the 84 months of playing with this team and wonder what could have been.
Now the rebuild begins, and we look toward the next chapter in the Dead Empire story. Seven years is a long time to repeat though, so we'll see if we can stick it out for long enough to have another try.
