Cometh the moment, Cometh the man |
The fans have witnessed a fantastic finish to the season in Division 5:20. Chandigarh Dynamos were 2nd going into the final match of the season, against the league leaders Punk Rock Allstars, who were two points better off. With their fate in their own hands, the Dynamos faced a tough match against the division's meanest defence, and one that only needed a draw to lift the title. While the Allstars had conceded the least number of goals, the Dynamos led the scoring charts.
After a fairly nervy start to the game, the home side got the lead through one of their brightest young talents, Florentino Jesus Pedrito. This was probably the biggest game of his fledgling career, and he delivered on it's grandest (so far) occasion. The Allstars weren't to be subdued, and to their credit they didn't park the bus, and made a game of it - they were soon back level. They could have taken the lead, hadn't it been for the heroics of the Dynamos young shot-stopper Frazer Staunton, a youth academy graduate.
The home fans' nerves were getting frayed by the minute as the clock wound down, despite of some solace in the fact their direct rivals for the promotion spots, Brunei were down in their game, meaning they'd still finish second.
But that was not to be as Florentino took matters into his hand at the 82nd minute, and slammed home a free kick into the top corner, sending the crowd into hysteria. They held out for the remaining few minutes, and closed out the game - clinching the title in the last ten minutes of the season.
This was the third division title that the manager has won with this team, and certainly the most satisfying - as they had lost the opening three games of the season - but never lost again the whole season, putting together an impressive run of form - which practically took them from the bottom of the table to the top.
At the end of the day however, it was all down to Florentino's virtuoso performance with his two goals that ensured the title. He has arrived.
