It wasn't me! |
"To be a true player you have to know how to play,
If she say a night, convince her say a day,
Never admit to a word when she say,
and if she claims and you tell her baby no way!"
No, not Shaggy, but it was Adam Moran this week claiming 'it wasn't me' after allegations of a tape recording containing damaging slurs against his players and boardroom directors was leaked. Many thought Moran could be sacked just hours before season 40 began with the first round match against Dream Pilots, however Moran was defiant as ever to clear his name.
In fact, instead of walking down the tunnel and entering the field of the Borgis Arena in his usual attire of a suit, Mr Moran appeared in a crisp white t-shirt bearing the slogan of 'it wasn't me'. The crowd was in hysterics as they seen the funny side of a serious situation. Even chairman of the board Christian Dykes was shown on the big screen with a little smirk. And in one moment it was apparent that this was simply a stunt from somebody trying to stir the pot. Moran was going nowhere; there was no controversial ending.
The players came into the fray and Moran quietly went to his dugout for a quick change of clothes, so as to not distract his players from their challenge ahead.
Dream Pilots were once a big name in the Xtreme League, winning the title back in season 27, and going on to reach a quarter-final place in the XCL. But their challenge now is a little different. Last season Borgis won the first match 1-0, whilst Dream Pilots won a reprieve and 3 points in the rematch, 2-1. Both teams were a little sluggish in this 3rd encounter, which is often the case in the first game of a season. Dream Pilots had the two best chances, and even had a goal disallowed. But despite this Borgis looked comfortable in defence and will be happy with the clean sheet. 0-0 the final score.
Borgis manager Moran was disappointed with his team's lack of chances despite playing a 3-5-2 formation and spoke to us after the game, which was in fact his first interview since the tape recording scandal hit the news.
"Did you like the t-shirt? It's been a funny old week, nothing ever surprises me any more in this job. The police contacted the club to explain of a situation that had developed so we were fully prepared for the headlines. So no, I didn't have to beg for my job. The culprits have been arrested but I've not pressed charges, it was pretty funny to me, it was just annoying that the players were hounded for inside info.
They kept their concentration and played a decent game tonight (Tuesday). It wasn't our finest performance of course, but we looked solid in defence and I think teams will find it hard to score against us this season. We just need that little extra up front."
Moran was then asked about players leaving the club after rumours of numerous transfer list applications were confirmed by a club source.
"Morgan (Strickland) is leaving us this week. He only joined last season after we got him for a million, and he was a good lad in the dressing room. But he wants more game time so we have to let him go. I'm getting a million back so it's like we've had free service of 11 apps, 1 assist and 1 goal; not bad hey? There's another player leaving this week too but I can't go into detail yet as the terms aren't finalised. There are some other players on the transfer list because they've asked to be, but obviously I can't disclose that. Hopefully the sales can help us bring somebody new in."
It will be interesting to see who else leaves the club this week because despite all the jest from Moran's t-shirt antics, there seems to be unrest amongst some of the players.
