Confidence Boosting Cup Beat Up
It's always nice to have a few early Cup games where it's a complete mismatch.  Even better when the opposition have a manager that has gone into hiding.  That was the scenario faced by the Cummins Honey Badgers this week when they took on Valera in the 1st leg of their 2nd Round Cup tie.

As was expected the Honey Badgers ran roughshod over their lowly opponents.  With the opposition in crisis and bordering on extinction, Mr Shephunter took the opportunity to give his younger players valuable game time.  Led by future superstar Toni Von Sibenthal, they young brigade didn't disappoint in the 7-0 drubbing.

It was apparent from the get go that the Honey Badgers weren't going to take it easy on Valera.  The moment the referee blew the whistle to begin the game they went on the attack.  Both forwards had shots on goal in the opening 10 minutes.  In the 12th minute Toni Von Sibenthal got his eye or head in to open the scoring.  Dragan Zunic sent a cross in and Von Sibenthal got the most delicate of touches on the ball to flick head it past the keeper.

In the 15th minute the score became 2-0 courtesy of a Emanuel Rangel penalty.  His spot kick made the Valera keeper look like a massive fool.  The keeper dived prematurely and with the keeper lying helplessly on the ground, Rangel sent the ball into the back of the net.

It took Von Sibenthal just 18 minutes to grab a brace of goals.  Fellow young gun Max Adelgren sent a beautiful cross to the far post for Von Sibenthal to head the ball in.  It was 3-0 and the few home town fans present were already starting to leave.

The pressure the Honey Badgers were exerting on Valera was ruthless.  In the 25th minute they finally gave in and gave away a free kick.  Simone De Bruno, the man who has questioned whether he was a man or woman thanks to his parents name giving cooly slotted the freebie.  It was now 4-0.

In the 27th minute Von Sibenthal and Zunic combined as they did for the opening goal.  However this time the roles were reversed with Zunic the recipient of some nice passing.  Von Sibenthal playing a wider role sent a cross into Zunic who effortlessly nodded in.

The referee blew the whistle to end the first stanza with the scoreboard reading 5-0 to the Honey Badgers.  Would the homeside bother to come back in the 2nd half?

They did but they must have been regretting the decision when just 2 minutes after the restart, defender Ko Chikanatsu was sent off.  In a fit of rage he punched Evan Cronan.  Poor old Ko couldn't squash a grape and some say he was sent off not for throwing the punch but for being some poor at it.

Zunic grabbed his 2nd goal of the game in the 53rd minute when he side footed an Adelgren pass into the box.  Zunic was causing all sorts of problems for Valera with his speed in and around the area.  At 6-0 and with a man down most expected the Honey Badgers to rack up 10.

Unfortunately they showed some mercy on their opponents and basically put the cue in the rack.  Late in the game the Honey Badgers were enjoying nearly 100% of the ball.  Shaqeel van Persie put the final touches on a one-side affair when he converted a corner set piece. It came as no suprise to see Zunic was the man to orchestrate the play.  Zunic finished with 2 goals and 2 assists which according to officials was still not good enough for man of the match honours.

Mr Shephunter was pleased with his side's win.  "Some may find these early Cup round games a waste of their time.  I'm not one of those.  Sure the opposition's manager failed to show up and the side they put out was poor and rudderless.  However we were able to run our plays and I was also able to give the younger guys 90 minutes of football. At the end of the day it's always fun to score loads of goals."
