Honey Badgers Claw Way Their To Victory
The Cummins Honey Badgers claimed top spot of Division 1a with a 2-1 victory over Wondering Trotters this week.  The Honey Badgers can consider themselves lucky to get the 3 points after Trotters manager Cmsmith almost came up with the game plan to upset the home side.

As the two sides lined up awaiting kick off, manager Mr Shephunter noticed his rival had loaded up the forward line.  Immediately he had concerns about how his side would react after preparing for a different scenario.

With the Trotters sitting back and looking to catch the Honey Badgers on the break, it was proving almost impossible for them to form any sort of attack.  They were dominating possession but that counted for nothing in the first half with the only shot on goal coming from the away side in the 22nd minute.

As his players trudged off the field at half time almost bewildered with what had just happened, Mr Shephunter knew he had to come up with something to special to find a way through, around or over this tight Trotters defence.

The second half looked to be delivering the same foul tasting medicine to the Honey Badgers.  They were dictating play but just could not enter the final third of the field.  Midway through the half Mr Shephunter could be seen looking to the sky and mouthing something.  Was he looking for divine intervention?

Whatever he did, it must have worked!  In the 73rd minute the Honey Badgers were awarded a penalty.  Captain and Spanish heart throb Emanuel Rangel stepped up to the spot oozing confidence.  As he has done many times before he blasted the ball to the bottom left corner to beat a confused Trotters' keeper.  The home side had taken the lead 1-0 and weren't the fans happy about it!

Following the goal, Mr Shephunter took the opportunity to replace Dragan Zunic.  The midfielder had come under extreme pressure all game and had basically been made ineffective by the Trotters.  Unfortunately the change had an immediate effect on the game.

In the 76th minute the Trotters equalised thanks to a Nat Hattersley free kick.  The defender expertly caressed the ball over the wall and past the keeper.  It was a majestic shot and signalled that the Trotters were here to fight.

With time starting to get away from them, the Honey Badgers realised they had to push forward.  In the 79th minute striker Evan Cronan once again put his side in front.  Wing back Simone De Bruno had made a nice run down the flank.  He and Shaqeel van Persie had put together some nice interchange passing to create space for the defender.  De Bruno then delivered a beautiful ball into the box to Cronan who put his foot right through the ball.  As the keeper picked the ball up from out of the netting, Cronan ran to the corner flag and did one of the worst samba dances you'll ever see.  You can't knock a man for his dancing when he's just scored the go ahead goal!

De Bruno had a chance to extend the lead in the 87th minute but his free kick went over the crossbar.  From then the Honey Badgers were able to control the ball and run the clock down for a valuable 2-1 win.

Mr Shephunter was a relieved man following the game.  "Hats off to Smithy and his side for a top showing.  They can consider themselves stiff to not get something from the game.  I felt we were lucky to get the 3 points but I'm also happy the boys kept plugging away for the full game.

"To be leading the division at the half way stage is a good result for us.  We'll have to keep our foot on the pedal as it's really tight at the top.  Four sides separated by 4 points means this season will go down to the wire.  The return game against the Trotters next round is going to be a bottler!"
