Then There Were Four
Coming up against the 15th seed Tropa de Elite, the Cummins Honey Badgers knew that their Cup Quarter Final match would not be easy.  So it turned out with it taking an extra time goal from Broderick Hutton to deliver the win.  The Honey Badgers will now take on CSU Cluj in the Semi Finals.

The first half was a tense affair.  Although the Honey Badgers had a reasonable amount of the ball, they simply couldn't get close enough to create chances.  In fact the work in the final third was brilliant by both sides.  So much so that the only shots on goal came from outside the box.

At times we've seen Honey Badgers manager Mr Shephunter get quite volatile with his side.  However he remained calm during the half time break as he reiterated that the goals weren't going to come easy and that they needed to stick to their systems.

In a moment of madness Broderick Hutton saw red in the 64th minute.Normally one to see plenty of opportunities to shoot for goal, Hutton was kept well under control.  He lashed out with a vicious stamp to defender Luke Patmore's foot earning himself a yellow card.  Absolute stupidity as the yellow card will now see him suspended from the club's next competitive match.

After 92 minutes, the two sides couldn't be separated.  The scores were locked at nil all.The game was going to extra time.  Given the stiff defence that had preceded, where was the winning goal going to come from?

The first half of extra time saw little action.  Somebody needed to take this game by the short and curlies. With that in mind both teams came out firing in the 2nd half of extra time.Neither side wanted this one going to a shootout.

First the Honey Badgers fired away.....miss.  Then shortly after Tropa de Elite...another miss.  Tropa de Elite were awarded a free kick in the 109th minute.  They came agonisingly close to taking the lead with the ball smashing into the post.

Then it came!  In the 115th minute Broderick Hutton made up for his brain fade earlier to put his side in the lead.  The front line tandem of Hutton and Evan Cronan combined beautifully in the penalty area with their short passing.  Hutton passed to Cronan and kept charging towards goal.He timed his run perfectly to receive the return pass from Cronan. He triumphantly put his foot right through the ball to beat the goalkeeper.  They just had to hang on for a few minutes and they were through to the Semi Finals.

Which they did.  The Honey Badgers had fought right to the end to deliver a 1-0 win and in the process book a spot in the Cup Semi Final.  Mr Shephunter was over the moon with the win.

"Once again my boys showed a never say die attitude.  It took 115 minutes but they got the result.  Full credit to Tropa de Elite.  Their defence was first class and it was only a piece of brilliance that finally broke them down.  We're through to the semis now and it won't get any easier.  We face CSU Cluj who had a massive 4-0 win in the Quarter Final.  We'll need to be at our best."

Mr Shephunter faces some tough decisions over the coming days with his squad rotation.  He refused to give away his plans but highlighted the issue.

"We've got a number of key players on the suspension tight rope.  We're currently leading our division and that's been our main goal all season.  However we've come so far in the Cup that it would be irresponsible to not give that a red hot go.  Do we play these guys in our League game and hope they avoid a card or do we rest them and hope the other lads step up?"

It would appear that Mr Shephunter has some big decisions to make.  Who said it was easy guiding a winning side?
