Almost Famous.. |
"I am a Golden God!!" proclaims the Molde FK manager, atop the roof of a poolside cabin during the after party celebrations held on foot of a significant Victory over league favourites Bekas FC earlier in the week. "I love beer!!" he shrieks to the howls of a baying crowd hungry for more.
The moment was gloriously captured to video by high school journalist William Miller, travelling with Molde FK during their inaugural run in 'The Xpert League' and uploaded to social media here:-

Earlier in the week, The Molde faithful had travelled to 'Cantinho da preta', home of No 1 League and No 2 Cup seeds Bekas FC for round 5 of the Xpert League. With few giving Molde any hope of taking any points from the clash, the actual result raised more than a few eyebrows. The game could scarcely have started any worse for Molde. After losing No 1 Keeper Yobe early on in the Sons of the Pheonix clash, top defender 16 rated Olushola Ibekwei was carried off only 2 minutes in. With an already packed back line this left 7 skill Randall Riddler as the only available substitute. With big boots to fill, Riddler settled in well. The breakthrough came on 60' when Sven Hofstede crossed for Salomon Eto'o to head home and put Molde in a surprise lead. Bekas Manager Bekas took immediate action, bringing Ashley Mitchell on for the ineffectual Garcia Lopez up front. Mitchell made an immediate impact for the home side smashing in from close range on'69 adjudged to be offside by the linesman. On '86 Gundar Stenman broke free of a packed midfield and slipped the ball to striker of the day Lars Akerred who wasted no time in slipping the keeper and sidefooting home to give Molde a second, and a win on the day.
"Ridiculous!!" shrieked manager Bekas. "Games like that make me want to leave the game" he huffed, before storming off to give the cat a shoeing. "a madman or a genius" Xpert Daily reporter TonyBrazil muttered in soliloquy.
The stage was set for a party of epic proportions, a part culminating in the now infamous "Golden God" moment, prompting the Beerfuelledman to dive bomb the crowd into the pool off the hotel roof. We caught up with a more sober looking Beerfuelledman later in the week after the 5-0 Cup Victory at FC Treasure Beach.
"We took a calculated gamble and it paid off" admits Beerfuelledman. Bekas play an exclusive 4-5-1. We can prepare for that, but the lack of change negates any real advantage. They'll beat us in a midfield battle all week long. The plan was a simple one with some complicated nuances. Going 5-3-2 we shut the back door, and hoped for a couple of chances from the Long ball. They weren't expecting that and that gave us a performance boost. Skill wise, we lost the midfield as expected, but matched their defence and played 4 bars higher on the attack. The hope was that the two wing backs would charge forward on the counter attack turning a defensive 5-3-2 formation into an attacking 3-3-4 formation that the Bekas defence wouldn't be able to cope with - and it worked. (Beerfuelledman won his 2nd Manager of the Round bottle of Champagne this season for the win).
No doubt Bekas will be in an unforgiving mood on their trip to Aker Stadion in Round 10, but for now it remains for Xpert League fans to enjoy the football, a more open title race, and for Molde FK fans to simply enjoy the win - let's just keep the manager, Golden God or not, off the rooftops shall we?
