25 seasons of confusion |
This is not your usual story about how some guy or gal builds a team from scratch and climbs up through the divisions to win the title in just seven seasons. And this is certainly not a story about how I swapped teams and reached infinite success in a couple of seasons. Nor is it a story about all the titles I’ve won, cus I ain’t won any…
This story is a bit different, and it is almost embarrassing to tell it. For 25 seasons (7 years) I have played this game and still here I am, in division 6, and the fact is that I have never reached above div 5. Looking at the Club history makes me wonder what the hell I’ve been doing all this time. Honestly, I don’t know.
I actually consider myself to be a good manager and I fancy building teams with some special touch to it, such as only using players developed in the youth academy or with some special quality. The problem with building teams with a special touch to it is that you don’t have enough patience. Or at least, I didn’t have the patience to see my German legendary players grow up and win any titles. Same thing with the exceptional Finnish players we brought up in the early -20s (season wise). This is probably bacause you deep inside know that your players will not be as good as the best players out there. Your team will not win any major titles.
And it’s not that the club has been collecting obscene amounts of money over the years. Well, the club’s got resources, yes, but it’s not rare that I buy players for about 10-15 mill, then play them couple of seasons, then rebuild and sell the player for round 7 mill. And this is where the confusion really shows. I don’t really have a clue what to do with the team and now I have been with the team too long to quit. The latest experiment was the Natianalmannschaft which was born after Sweden’s remarkable 0-4 to 4-4 recovery in Berlin. Later, the same Nationalmannschaft won the World cup (last summer) and then my enthusiasm just died… Like for all of the teams I build before.
Now here I am, hopefully with a squad that'll have no reason to sell of. I've tried not to get any emotional connections to any of the players (except Augenthaler and Thormann that are still in the club) and the focus is clearly to build a competitive team that can win trophies in the future. I'd say that the squad is good enough even though it needs some adjustments to get it to work at the top for many seasons. I don't want to swap teams after four seasons at the top.
It's good to finaly have a clear goal to aim for, but I cant stop wondering why it had to take 25 seasons to get here...
