Back in the big time |
It's been 30 seasons since Shark Utd last played in the top division of the Ultimate League. A long 30 seasons. All that will change from next season following a nervy last day win over Buffalo Springfield.
The fans were expectant of a victory, whilst Springfiled needed the points to stay up. A nervy opening 20 minutes and the expectant fans were getting onto the teams back. However, all that changed on the 28th minute, when veteran midfielder Evans Kambwanji launched a rocket shot from the edge of the area, which flew into the top corner. The relief round the stadium was noticeable. The team started to play with confidence keeping the ball and went into half time with the tails in the air.
The second half started poorly, but as time went on Shark Utd were holding their own. Springfield briefly threatened and reminded the fans that one goal could change everything. With the end of the game approaching, Shark Utd were given a free kick on th edge of the area. With regular free kick taker Marco Vela out injured, it was left to his replacement, youngster Rick Carter to setup Alan Hollyfield with a brilliant free kick routine. Two goals to the good, Springfield were dead on their feet and the Sharks were going back to the big time.
Manager Van Rental was delighted with his promotion to the top flight, one of his aims when he took over the team back in season 20.
"I said that I would get this team back to the top flight. It's taken 18 seasons but we got there in the end. Other managers may have done it sooner, and it has been a struggle on occasions. However, the team is now in great shape, has decent funds and a number of upcoming youngsters to hopefully maintain our status in the top flight for a few seasons. It will be tough for any promoted team, as we saw this season with two of last seasons promoted teams being relegated. But I will enjoy our moment in the spotlight and give it our best shot next season. We may cause a few upsets, and who knows what will happen".
