Lacey in shock move! |
The Shark Utd branch of the Reginald Lacey fan club has been disbanded before a ball has been kicked in anger, following the 18 year old turning down the Division 1a champions in favour of division 5.26 side AFC Clifton.
For those who aren't up on the a ultimate league news, Lacey burst onto the scene with a brace on his debut for his old team Knights of Cydonia. His talent was undeniable, with some journalists labelling him 'the new Gottfrid Wahlqvist'. His debut got the Ultimate League big boys sniffing around, with Shark Utd leading the chase for the youngster, and were expected to make a large offer in the pre season.
Despite his talents Lacey never got another game at Knights of Cydonia, after a falling out with his manager APerson. His desire to play at a higher level to showcase his talents led to Lacey requesting a transfer; and with all teams alerted, a transfer frenzy was expected, with Shark Utd leading the bidding.
Bids certainly came in, and it looked like a battle between Ultimate League top dogs Falkirk Flyers and Shark Utd, and up an coming team Partizan Belgretna for his signature.
The Shark fans were excited in anticipation; with some fans starting a new fan club, even going to the extent of getting t-shirts and badges made up.
However, it came to a shock to everyone when Lacey announced that he had signed for Divison 5 minnows AFC Clifton.
"I don't know what happened" said an exasperated Shark Utd manager Van Rental " we made some solid bids that were accepted, and we were just waiting for the lad to sign on the dotted line. We thought it was a done deal, and were going to build our opening game against the Flyers around him. I was even prepared to drop 23/14 Halliday for Lacey and give him the bigger stage he craved. I don't know how or why he ended up at Clifton".
Rumours are circulating that despite his ability with a football, and having a "footballing brain", he does not actually possess a real brain. It would appear that Lacey put the wrong postcode into his satnav and somehow ended up at Clifton rather than Shark Utd. Despite the big "welcome to AFC Clifton" sign hanging above the stadium, and the distinct lack of Shark Utd on any of the paperwork, he still signed the contract anyway.
Reginald Lacey could not be contacted for an interview at the time of going to press, but on his twitter page he said he was delighted to be at Clifton and looking forward to making his debut in their friendly on Friday. A bumper crowd is expected, a fans flock far and wide to catch a glimpse of an Ultimate League legend in the flesh.
As for the Shark Utd branch of the Reginald Lacey appreciation society; a new ebay user ID has been set up recently, selling Lacey related merchandise all for the bargain starting price of 99p.
