A momentous occasion |
Zacharias Ingesson stepped onto the Estadio Lucifer turf and all hell broke loose. Fireworks ripped apart the heavens, confetti canons blew industrial amounts of paper into the sky and four marching bands blasted out from each corner of the ground.
The celebration was due to this being Zac's 320th appearance for the Matchstick Men, making him now the club's most played player. As captain he duly obeyed the pre-match niceties, then on twelve minutes assisted Matchstick's first goal. The celebrations started again, this time doubled in size.
There was a lot of extra time played due to celebrations breaking out throughout the match but finally it reached an end, and one victorious as Matchsticks beat Dinamo 3-0. The only sour note was their title-competitor Chiefs going back top on goal difference after winning their own match 4-0.
Manager Tony Brazil cared not about dropping to second place as he rose to make a speech in the Lucifer bar, "I remember only too well how we signed Zacharias; we were on a scouting mission and signed the wrong guy!"
Brazil pauses for laughter that doesn't come.
"I'd gone to Vallens IF to for a final look and chat to one of their midfielders, then my eye was taken by this young product of their youth academy running rings round everyone on the pitch. The kid's kit bag was in the Matchstick Men's colours of the day, pink and brown.
"We bumped into Zac in the car park and I was startled to find out his car was also in Matchstick Men colours, brown with pink seating. Nice. Turns out he was a boyhood fan of us and would jump at the chance to join the club.
"Back in the conference room a deal was hammered out, and for the price of a training session Zac came home with us. Forget the player we initially went to see, we had found a diamond in the mine.
"Twenty-two seasons later captain Zac has been a diamond every day here at Estadio Lucifer, and if he takes us into the first division this season I have promised him we will revert to our old pink and brown strip in his honour."
Zacharias Ingesson listens outside brooding, whilst sitting in his 22-year old, brown mini with pink seating, "that's nice boss, but I'd prefer a pay rise after all these years."
