Viking hopes "only mostly dead" |
Surreally, despite looking like dead women walking for some time now, Viking South Utsira are somehow still not yet technically relegated as the Xpert Ladies season enters its final week.
Only their second league win all season, and first in seven weeks, lifted the Norsewomen off the bottom of Division 2b this Tuesday at the expense of Championettes -- and the 2-0 victory over Man City Ladies means that in theory the Utsirans could still stay up if they beat 3rd-placed FC Sprezzatura on the last day. Provided, that is, that both City and Girls Aloud lose their closing fixtures, at home to title challengers Janes Addiction and rock-bottom Championettes respectively, and with a six-goal swing from City to VSU.
In practice, then, it is a straight fight between City and Aloud, with the former having a better GD by 2 but much the harder closer test against Addiction. The Addicts are just a point behind longterm leaders Gretna Girls, but Gretna have a last-day trip to The Norfolk Broads for whom it is a dead rubber. Short of a deeply improbably combination of results going Viking's way, in all likelihood the Blood Eagles will be naught but interested spectators to the real drama both ends of the table before completing their plunge into Division 3.
