Miracle at Mirabell |
Edelweiß Salzburg will play in Division 5 again next season. While it doesn't sound like big news, when one considers the course of the past season it really is.
That the Austrians beat Fat Chicks United on the final match day at home in Schloss Mirabell wasn't a huge surprise to anyone, nor that the victory was quite emphatic. 5-1, of which three goals were scored by promising youngster Eva Kant.
But that Edelweiß should stay up, after being stuck in the relegation zone since match day 4, is close to a Christmas miracle. "For almost an entire season I kept believing we were too good to go down", says manager Wannes Verhoeven, almost in tears. "Yet, at each opportunity to turn things around, we somehow stumbled and lost points again. Two weeks ago, after a desolate draw versus Fairy Tail, I thought we had been served our final chance. I basically gave up all hope."
Perhaps this was the element his players needed to rise above expectations and defy all odds. They booked back to back wins, rich in goals, in order to end on 17 points and a goal deficit of precisely 0. Thus climbing above their unfortunate foes Ozzie Legends and Snatch.
Club captain Elisa Lange: "Coach Verhoeven never ceased to express his support, but in the end it was us ourselves who had to put in the performance to stay up. We are happy to have achieved this goal, but we should honestly never been in this position in the first place. We will strive to do better next time round. But for now, we will carry our coach through the club's buildings and shower him with champagne. If you'll excuse me, please."
