Hovland twins help VSU to good wins |
Viking South Utsira made it five straight wins to open their season with two welcome victories on the road this week keeping their momentum up in league and cup.
In truth, Tuesday's Division 3e result at The Norfolk Broads was something of a smash 'n' grab, the Utsirans giving up 59% of possession and 8 shots to 5 only to come away with a 2-0 win against the run of play. Mette Hovland, having seen twin Lina score three days earlier, bagged only the second goal of her 9-season career and first for five seasons when she converted from Tyra Klovning's corner just after the hour mark. Nina Austrheim headed home Bergljot Kvalvik's cross two minutes from time to make the points unexpectedly safe.
Saturday's Round 2 Xpert Ladies Cup trip to Division 5 side The Troachetes began well when Kvalvik put Kristin Hovland through to open the scoring inside quarter of an hour. The Norsewomen were profligate thereafter, however, until Lina Hovland -- apparently stung by her older sister getting in on the goalscoring act -- crashed home from outside the area on 75 minutes. Having netted precisely once in each of the preceding three campaigns, two in seven days represents a significant uptick in the scoring rate for the 26-year-old.
Almost exactly the same could be said for Tove Kvalvik, when the 22-year-old midfielder headed an 88th-minute third from Kvalvik's corner to double her own season's tally -- having scored only twice in five campaigns previously.
The assists also took 33-year-old Bergljot's tally in that category to 4 in 5 games, meaning she has already contributed more in the opening fortnight of this term than in 38 appearances over the last two seasons combined -- indeed, she usually performs such a deep-lying role she has only 30 goals and 42 assists in total from 285 career games. Manager VelvetAndroid will be hoping for more when his side look to confirm their progress to the third round next weekend.
First up of course is the third league fixture. Viking are now top of Div 3e in the early going, on goal difference from Kongo BK, and have an extremely intriguing home game this coming Tuesday against BV Cloppenburg. Android's women have never faced Rock_on's side in the 5 years the two managers have both been in this league, even in a friendly -- but more astonishingly this will be the two clubs' first encounter, of any sort, in fifty seasons. Their only previous meetings (under previous managers, obviously) came in July and October 2005, during Season 7 in Division 4o. Fourteen calendar years later, they are one whole division higher.
The managers can feel very proud.
