New faces summoned to tackle old guard

Djpuyamix appointed as next Dinamo boss

Fans shock as Steaua fan, Djpuyamix is appointed new boss of Dinamo Bucuresti F.C

In a move that has shocked many in xpertdom, former Xtreme League winning boss and XCL semi-finalist, Djpuyamix, has been appointed the new boss of Dinamo Bucuresti F.C despite his allegiances to close rivals, Steaua. The Romanian manager has signed a three year deal at the club and the Dinamo Bucuresti board are confident he will be the man to take Dinamo from Division 4 to the top flight of the Final League with Djpuyamix himself admitting boredom had been setting in during his time at Xtreme League side, Romanian College.

“The temptation [didn’t] make me change the team, it was more the fact that I got bored and I wanted to try something new.”

Djpuyamix is no stranger to the sight of a new changing room and his is a story which has seen him visit many teams in the Official Leagues before his latest appointment at Dinamo Bucuresti. In fact this isn’t even Dypuyamix’s first experience of the Final League having been manager of the currently named Black Ravens of Division 6:54. Two promotions with them led to a stint at FCS Bucuresti of the Xtreme League before receiving his big break at, what was then, a struggling Division 4 team going by the name of Rullens BK.

Rullens BK soon became Romanian College and that was not the only change that would take place at the side during Djpuyamix’s tenure in charge. A run of three promotions in four seasons made the manager a real crowd favourite at the club and Djpuyamix soon made himself headlines as a master tactician, even if his teambuilding skills were not quite held in the same light and Djpuyamix revealed the reasons why he does not regard teambuilding in the same vein as tactical intellect.

“I know how to build a squad but I don't have the patience to train, level up and sell, and do it all over again many years. I'm here since 2007, I’m starting to get bored of this game and I’m just enjoying the game at this moment, but I cannot say for how long. I have no plans for Dinamo for now.”

It was the cup which yielded Djpuyamix’s strength as manager, an unprecedented cup record during his time at the club which saw his side reach the last sixteen of the competition in each of his last six seasons in charge of the club, winning it once with a superb 1-0 victory against Deus ex Machina. Romanian College entered that game as overwhelming underdogs being five divisions beneath Deus ex Machina at the time but a 78th minute Pedro Santos header in a game which yielded few chances snared Romanian College the trophy in a competition which they always featured strongly in, throughout Djpuyamix’s tenure.

“Romanian College helped me to get on the big stages, cup finals, each season spent with them was, (even without my intention to get so far) a chance to win the cup.”

With the cup, Romanian College qualified for the next season’s Xpert Champions League competition but, being a Division Four side at the time; few expected anything of them, especially when they were drawn in a group containing Tug4zon3 Elite, Steaua Oradea and the Chaos Marauders. Romanian College were brilliant though! Dispatching the Marauders in their first XCL match, a defeat to the Elite followed but Romanian College still qualified for the next round, winning and drawing two each of their last four fixtures to reach the second round. The second phase of the XCL is a cup format and being that was Djpuyamix’s strength, College fans were confident of more surprises to come. The second round saw the College paired with, would you believe, Tug4zon3 Elite. Unfortunately the College lost their first leg match at home, 1-2 and many had written their chances off already. With ten minutes of the second leg remaining, it was still 1-2 to Tug4zon3 on aggregate but Romanian College somehow produced a sublime response to score twice in the last ten minutes, Milan Pejanovic with the goals. FC Olympiakos were the College’s quarter final opponents and after winning 2-0 at home, Djpuyamix’s “cup mojo” turned on, a draw in the second leg enough to seal the College’s place in a semi-final at their first attempt. Sadly that was where the dream ended. FC Romamojo were simply too strong and despite battling to a 0-0 draw at home in the first leg, Marcelo Magalhães’ freekick was enough to send Romanian College from the competition a round before the Final.

Regardless of the defeat, the competition had done wonders for Djpuyamix’s standing in the game with many managers remarking on the Romanian’s superb stewardship of his team throughout the tournament, the plucky unknown and his Division Four side reaching the semi-finals of xpert’s most prominent competition yet Djpuyamix was quick to warn managers of the dangers of reaching the semi-finals of the XCL so early in your xpert management career.

“I was very surprised to see that I reached so far, and eliminate Tug4zone Elite, a favourite to win the competition in that season. I was very close indeed, one goal away from a grand finale, where anything could happen, but even so, I was playing in division 4, the team wasn't so strong to dream about the biggest trophy from xperteleven, but I guess I managed to have a little attention from some managers. That experience made me feel complete, I didn't win the trophy but I felt like I did everything that could be possible on xperteleven, there are no more secrets for me, and after that experience everything else has no sense anymore. Is the best feeling you can get, playing in XCL, but I advise people not to rush there, after they will do it, they might lose the interest of this game even faster than they thought.”

With that in mind, I asked Djpuyamix of his favourite memories in charge of Romanian Stars after sealing his move to Dinamo Bucuresti.

“Pfft many wonderful special memories. One of them is of course winning the cup in my first season with them, the special feeling and emotions I went through when I was in XCL and everyone was looking at my games to see how I did. Romanian College was the best team I ever trained since I play xperteleven and it was my best time spent on this website, I somehow regret that I left them, but maybe next manager will do more than I was capable of doing with them.”

In terms of set goals with Dinamo, Djpuyamix has set his bar low despite such profound achievement in charge of the College. The Romanian does not believe he will be able to replicate what he and his Romanian College managed in the seven seasons they had together, but the good news for Dinamo fans is that the manager still, for now, has the hunger to achieve and will nonetheless strive to reach the levels he managed in the Xtreme League.

“I don't think I can realise what I did with Romanian College before, not a chance after I saw how they are playing, but I will do my best to get it further than the previous manager. I need money to be able to change something so for now I’m saving money for buying something better at the end of the season.”

[When asked whether he could achieve more at Dinamo than he achieved at Romanian College] “Never but my job is to try, right?”

It will certainly be difficult for Djpuyamix to enjoy anything like the successes he had in charge of the Romanian College but with such an esteemed repertoire and with a squad valued at 166,959,608 econ, Djpuyamix has a great basis to work with to turn his current side of stars into a squad that took the XCL by storm like Romanian College did all those seasons ago.

The objectives that Djpuyamix has with the club though are likely to be put on hold in the upcoming weeks though as Djpuyamix prepares for another significant day in his life. “What, moving to the Final League isn’t significant enough?” I hear you ask. Well perhaps but Djpuyamix is also preparing for his upcoming marriage to his fiancée in Romania and Djpuyamix reliably informs me that no matter what beholds Dinamo Bucuresti in the future, it will not be at the expense of personal life joy.

“There are no terms of comparisons; I will always prefer real life activities instead of living virtual. Until I get to the top division in Final League probably I will have 2-3 kids.”

My final question to Djpuyamix was of the toughest opponents he had to face in the Xtreme League and, unsurprisingly, two familiar cup foes were chosen as his personal favourites.

“All of them, every single game was important and was hard this way. I don't have any particular manager who gave me the feeling that is invincible, however, Romanian Stars’ Daiony was one hell of a manager, luck or not he won the cup as long as I was there, I couldn't beat him in the cup final, and it was a pleasure to play against my neighbour Corbu, who managed to win the last cup, so I guess this was also a nice experience which probably I will miss later.”

With such a brilliant record at the Romanian Stars, Dinamo Bucuresti fans have a lot to be excited about at Stefan cel Mare this season with Djpuyamix in charge and with the club having won their last five in all competitions (at the time of writing), it seems as though the honeymoon period at the club is allowing Dinamo fans the chance to accept the Romanian boss with open arms despite his affinity with neighbours Steaua. It will soon be time though for Djpuyamix to enjoy his own honeymoon (of which everyone in the XD wishes him the very best) and whether this will beset his club’s own honeymoon period remains to be seen.

Soccer relations on the International Border

An in-depth look into the xpert eyes of two of North America’s best upcoming coaches

As sporting rivalries go, the one between the United States of America and Canada is fairly meek… but you try telling that to the 26,630 fans packed inside Old Trafford to watch the Olympic women’s semi-final between Canada and the United States, a frantic encounter which was won by the USA in the 123rd minute of the game. Barack Obama is another man who may tell you that the rivalry between the United States and Canada is alive and well having twice been made to hand Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, a case of beer after Canadian ice-hockey triumphs at the last two Winter Olympics. But does this rivalry extend to men’s football – in which I am referring to the one played with a spherical ball and not the egg-shaped excuse of a game which is often referred to as ‘football’ – and in that, xpert eleven? Well I sought to find this out as well as taking a look at two of the Final League’s most protuberant, improving sides in Division 4m’s Gratis Paladin FC – managed by Georgian (the state) based, Georgiadawg of the United States – and Division 4g’s Whitecaps FC – managed by Rumblefish who currently resides in British Columbia, Canada.

If you wanted an xperteleven definition of loyalty for the dictionary then you’d do well to look past Georgiadawg. Having joined the website following inspiration from football message board, footballforumuk.com – a website which Georgiadawg also tells me motivated him to start following his favourite team Liverpool – Georgiadawg went on to take over Gratis Paladin a day later and in four years since, has not looked back. Nor has he willingly given up a team in a private league as he tells me, the only ever team he has given up on this website is because of the league folding. Has he ever been tempted to leave for a more ‘ready-made project’? Well, maybe if a golden statue isn’t erected…

“Not really been tempted to leave the club. As long as ownership at Gratis Paladin is happy with my performance, I plan on staying. We have been at odds at time, over some of my peculiar training tactics (swimming with sharks, mud wrestling water buffalo, etc).”

“I have asked that the team place a statue of me with both fists raised, at the entry gates to the club's home ground (Pitch at Tel Megiddo). They keep promising, but I have yet to see the statue. Maybe I should win more trophies first?”

Gratis Paladin themselves are quite an impressive outfit. An unfashionable history has seen them rise from Division 8 to Division 4 in almost fifteen seasons and Georgiadawg has much better players at his disposal compared to when GP were initially elected to the league. The club has players registered of all ages and abilities but engrained firmly within is what I like to describe as the “Georgiadawg trademark” of football management. Throughout the squad there are players who are either supremely intelligent, a brilliant freekick taker or in the case of veteran midfielder Mike Hunt, both. I asked Georgiadawg to go into more detail about his love of the two special qualities and he did so in particular inference to Hunt whilst also shedding light of another Special Quality he is particularly fond of – one which may come as a surprise.

“For me the best SQ is Intelligent. The intelligent teams just seem to produce so many more chances and provide more goals.”

“I will also target freekick specialist for two reasons, 1. I may need one, 2. resale value. If my Academy produces a freekick specialising midfielder or forward I may keep him for a few years and sell for a large profit. I have freekick specialists generally spread though my team at 5 year age intervals. If possible I match the shooting power special quality with the freekick special quality. It produces great results, and even better if you can find it in a defender as they are generally less pricey than a midfielder or forward with the same special qualities. And if the defenders are scoring their form stays higher.”

“The then 19 year old is my most celebrated player, Mike Hunt. He was purchased with the intelligent and freekick special quality. He is now a 32/13 with 139 points in 201 matches. Hunt peaked in player value as a 28/12.”

“Also as a strange aside if I am in the market for a player, often I will target a player with the hidden special quality, injury prone. Yes he is injury prone, but not significantly more than other players. However their purchase price can be 30% to 50% less than a player without injury prone. Keep in mind you will need to keep this player for the long term as re-sale is very poor.”

The teambuilding tips continue to emanate from a man just as willing to share his knowledge as he is to learn more and the teambuilding expertise Georgiadawg has assumed meant that he could not afford to be too risqué in the transfer market. The record speaks for itself. Four years in charge and not a penny over three million econ paid for any one player has given Georgiadawg all the financial backing he needs to continually develop his squad to their maximum potential.

“I never realized that fact. I guess would rather spend the money on player kits, and grounds keeping.”

“I did a little research. In the 14 seasons I have managed the club I have bought 21 players. Of those, two were 19 years of age, and the rest were 18 and under.”

“For me, player development is most important, and the thing I like most about Xpert Eleven. I may skimp on player purchase price, but I never hold back on Form Training. If the player is less than 30 years old, and his form falls below 15, I automatically train him. Yes, I do get a few ‘minimal effects’ from training, but it is the best way to build a squad for the long term.”

In the current campaign, Gratis Paladin are top of the Division 4m table with 22 points gained of a possible 24 and having scored 28 goals in 8 games – an average of 3.5 goals per game. In fact so exciting have games involving Gratis Paladin been this season that even the match they didn’t win included the most goals in a Gratis Paladin game this season, that a thoroughly entertaining 4-4 draw against fifth placed Wanderers HFB FC. Will Gratis Paladin ground out the points needed to make the third division? And can Georgiadawg coax his side to the top division without needing to make drastic changes?

“Promotion? Yeah we should make that barring horrific injuries or horrific managing. The squad is good, and the form is good. We should be just good enough to get promoted, and then play ‘Whack a Mole’ for one season and get pounded back down.”

“Unfortunately Gratis Paladin has topped out and will continue to yo-yo between division 4 and 3 without a tear down. I could do it but where would Mike Hunt or Frazier Rowley go? They have such a tremendous following among the Paladin fans, with their Children's Foundations, their player fan clubs, etc.”

“I do have quite a war chest built for Gratis Paladin, over 50 million econs and a squad value over 100 million. So it is a possibility. I have expected for some time to get a message from Gratis Paladin Board Chairman Kenny Dawg-Leash to tear the club down and start over. But until I hear something I will keep bouncing sailing along between divisions 3 and 4.”

A volatile chairman isn’t something Canadian, Rumblefish has to worry about. Or at least if it is, he draws no attention to it. The newly motivated boss first joined xperteleven in 2008 to help fill a private league. He provided a firm basis and produced the foundation for current Major League side, Whitecaps Utd, to reach the top flight though left before those dreams were realised as interest in the game waned just under a year ago. After eight months in the xpert wilderness, in May this year, the married father of three joined his old club’s namesake, Whitecaps FC of the Final League and explained all about his time growing uninterested – then reattached to the game.

“Real life just got in the way as it is apt to do. I really didn't want to leave but I just didn't have the time to manage all my teams properly. I had a full quota of teams at the time and I did think of dropping all but my official team to see if I could manage it but it just didn't feel right being a part time manager. It was either all in or all out no half way.”

“After getting settled in from our family's big move I was mucking around on my computer when I saw the Xpert symbol in my bookmarks. Thought I'd just check in for a moment and see what had happened to my old side and where they were at. Kinda weird how you can get attached to imaginary players isn't it?! Anyway next thing I know I've bought VIP for 6 months and I'm starting the journey all over again.”

The aim will obviously be to secure the same sort of success his old Major League side are currently enjoying with the new edition of the Whitecaps. One glaring similarity between Rumblefish and his American counterpart are the two managers’ philosophy on teambuilding and the transfer market. Form training seems to again be the focal part of the Whitecaps’ build and Rumblefish’s most expensive signing with both his current Whitecaps and the old incarnation is only 200,000 econ more than Georgiadawg’s most expensive signing with Gratis Paladin and both managers were far keener to utilise the youth academy than they were shelling out the big bucks.

“Oh I've had the funds and been tempted to spend it but just never could justify it to myself. I'm not a special quality fiend as I don't think they really make a huge difference in the overall performance so I've never overspent on trying to load up on them. Obviously freekick is a must-have and a couple of hiddens like hard trainer and greedy are nice but for the most part I think they are just window dressing. I'd rather save up a few econ for heavy training sessions and a rainy day fund than just spend it for the sake of spending it. I don't see the need to spend massive unless you’re only a piece or two away from realistically challenging for the big titles.”

The current Whitecaps are a heavily diluted version of Rumblefish’s previous outfit. The current crop of young players are peering through from behind the experienced players’ guidance though even the most diehard Whitecaps fan would be optimistic in hoping that the Whitecaps will be challenging the very best in the Final League for at least another 6-7 seasons yet. The fulcrum is in place though and it seems Rumblefish can finally start to shape the squad to his own vision.

“As I've usually tried to do; a slow and steady progression through the ranks culling the weak off the team and replacing with someone better. Once you've finally got the core in place you're comfortable with then just fill in around the edges with a decent supporting cast and chase the dream.”

Whitecaps FC are currently third in Division 4g, rather unspectacular until you factor in the fact that the Whitecaps have managed four wins in eight games despite being the second weakest side and having the lowest valued squad in the whole division. Remarkable. The side have been nicknamed ‘the entertainers’ having scored eighteen (at 2.25 goals per game) and conceded twelve (at 1.5 per game) in their eight league games so far and the club’s double-header against Undertakers FC which featured two lively draws; a 3-3 and a 2-2, only served to justify that nickname. When speaking to Rumblefish about the goals for this season I was taken aback by his will to win and just how much he relishes the prospect of the chance to lead his side to Division Three next season.

“I'm always trying for promotion whether it’s a reasonable goal or not. I feel if you go into the season trying not to be relegated or tread water then you aren't going to be playing optimally. You'll be playing not to lose instead of playing to win and that usually only leads to failure.”

Whereas with xperteleven philosophies it seems the two managers have two very similar attitudes, in real life football they have everything but. When it comes to supported clubs, Georgiadawg is a Liver bird, his favourite club from the Premier League which he describes as the “greatest football league in the world” whereas Rumblefish is a diehard fan of the Vancouver Whitecaps, one of three Canadian clubs to participate in the American MLS and I quizzed them to find out more…

Georgiadawg: “Liverpool have a large and growing following in the US. They toured here this summer and also two years ago. I have seen them play at Fenway Park in Boston (what a treat that was), and in Charlotte. The match in Charlotte was against AC Milan. The entire stadium was dressed in red. Ninety five percent of the 66,000 fans were Liverpool supporters.”

“There are many active, officially club sponsored, Liverpool supporters clubs in the US. I am a member of the Atlanta club. If we have a match against say a small mid-table club such as Man United there could be 200 fans packed in our club's Pub at 7:00 AM. This same scene repeats all over the US. Many are ex-pats, but most are just plain old Americans.”

“The biggest impact for soccer recently has been NBC bringing the Premier League to American television. Every single match is available for viewing Live, streaming or on demand. I know that makes folks in the UK jealous.”

“Fenway Sports Group? I think they have been terrific for Liverpool. We went from the worst (Hicks and Gillette) to what I think are the best. This ownership group may not win as many championships as their billionaire, money is no object competitors, but they are going about their business in the right way.”

Rumblefish: “Die-hard Caps fan and always will be! The team itself is fairly young but I think they've finally put together a strong nucleus that just needs some time to grow together. The only area where they really need to improve is with their forwards as they have no one that is really clinical at the position and the offence can be a bit pop gun.”

“When they are playing at their best they do play a very up-tempo attacking style of play which is quite exciting but plays havoc with your emotions as the swings during a match are crazy. I'd much rather have that though than a stale defensive game where the most action you see on the pitch is off to the side where the reserves are doing their warm up exercises.”

And what about football in the United States and Canada? Is it still growing, and to what extent?

Georgiadawg: “It is becoming more popular, but not as fast as thought it would 40 years ago. I have been playing and coaching and watching since I was a youngster and thought it would be bigger than it is by now. That being said there is a real large following behind the US Men's National team. They play well, are coached well, and are very well supported.”

“Also the MLS continues to improve in both quality and viewership. That is the real key to making Soccer more popular here. Atlanta is set to get a team in years. The southern part of the US has been neglected by MLS as there is not a team with 700 miles of ‘The Capital’ of the South eastern US.”

Rumblefish: “I think with the introduction of the three MLS teams in Canada football (soccer) is finally grabbing a foot hold in the sporting conscience of the country. Canada has such a huge immigrant population which has football as its first passion that they now have somewhere locally to turn that to. Hockey will always be king here but I think football will one day take over second spot in the not too distant future.”

So the USA like Canada enough to allow their teams to join Major League Soccer but is there a rivalry between them or is it quite friendly?

Georgiadawg: “Us and the Canadians? We are like ‘brothers from another mother’. Most of us from south of the border really like the folks from the other side of the border. Put us in a room and it is kinda hard to tell us apart until we start speaking. And any more that is getting harder to tell apart."

“Our biggest sports rivalry with them is Hockey, which really isn't a sport unless synchronized swimming is a sport; and the cool winter sports. Skiing, snow boarding, skating."

“In worldwide sports, the biggest rivalry for me is the Ryder Cup, and we have not done well at that lately, and by the time this is published we probably just got pounded."
[Europe 16 ½ - 11 ½ USA for those interested].

"Americans are wired to be the best at what they decide they are going to be good at. When it comes to football (with pointy ends) we are the world champions because we say so. In baseball the winner of the World Series is "The World Champion". Not because we played the rest of the world and beat them, but because we said so!.. I know this irritates folks the rest of the world. That is just how we are and we don't mean any harm by it. And truth be told, who would the rest of the world put up against the Seattle Seahawks?”

Rumblefish: “They are probably our biggest rivals in sports but I don't know if it’s that way for them or not. I think they tend to be the measuring stick to which we compare ourselves. As for an American describing hockey as not a sport it's because they've never been the dominant nation so they put it down to make to massage their egos.”

“They've tried to compete with us but they will just never be at our level so they write it off. I think it’s the same way they regard soccer because they've never been able to be the best at it they feel it’s not worth their respect.”

The spirit of rivalry lives on! Finally I asked both coaches which nation would be the first to win the XCL and the answers were less than surprising…

Georgiadawg: “That is easy. We will, because there are a lot more of us, and they are too busy playing Hockey. :)”

Rumblefish: “The Great White North and we'll win multiple titles before they even have a sniff at one.”

So that’s that decided… Both these managers might be a little far away from XCL glory just yet but both are certainly capable of becoming Final League favourites of the future given their current sides and former glories. Should both achieve their goal of being promoted then they might even be drawn in the same division in Division 3 next season. Then we’d see the Canada-United States rivalry really begin to bloom!

Soito rise to Botosani’s challenge

Playoff winners are surprise challengers to Botosani’s crown

Having won the last three Final League titles, it will not surprise many to hear that FC Botosani are already looking like fulfilling their favourites tags and leave bookies very disappointed at the end of the season. _mr.Xpert_ has marshalled his side to five wins in eight games and with no defeats too, Botosani are clear at top of the table. What may come as more of a surprise is their title challengers this season. ACD Soito finished second in Division 1b last season – behind C.F. Univ. Craiova yet find themselves in the ultimate astounding position of being just two points adrift of Botosani with six games to play and also boasting an unbeaten top flight record.

ACD Soito won their opening Final League clash, 2-1 against last season’s high-flying starters, Liverpool Super Stars before succeeding to draw their next FOUR league games against Paraiso Montanha, Wildcat Wanderers, Hockeypojkarna FC and title protagonists, FC Botosani. The game between Botosani and Soito peppered an intriguing rivalry between the two sides as _mr.Xpert_’s traditional post-match verbals were given short shrift from ChukieFC who was keen to point out that Botosani were not the only team to suffer from unlucky results on this exceptional virtual management game.

The immediate riposte from ChukieFC in defence of his team gave us an insight into the character of a man who will not be intimidated in the face of the three-times champions and his own side have gone on to win their last three league fixtures including a hugely impressive home-and-away double against yo-yo side Buggen to keep Botosani in check as the champions aim to win an unprecedented fourth consecutive title.

Botosani’s season has been as impressive as you would expect from a team boasting a hattrick of titles, taking commanding victories in their first three away games and have carried on that same streak throughout the season though were recently pegged back by Hockeypojkarna and were lucky to draw against another of last season’s promoted clubs.

Filling in the final piece of the title race jigsaw are the Wildcat Wanderers who, for a second straight season, are determined to remain in reach of Botosani at the top. FC Botosani are the only side to have defeated the Wanderers this season, a demoralising defeat for the Wanderers to the tune of a 2-0 scoreline which could have been far greater had the Botosani strikers worn their shooting boots for that particular game. However a double-header victory against the Liverpool Super Stars has lifted the Wanderers back into contention; the club are on 13 points just five points adrift of Botosani with six games still to play.

Final League title race...
Position Team Games Played W D L GF-GA GD Points
1st FC Botosani 8 5 3 0 12-3 9 18
2nd ACD Soito 8 4 4 0 9-3 6 16
3rd Wildcat Wanderers 8 3 4 1 10-6 4 13

At the bottom it’s not looking good for Univ. Craiova. The promoted side finished above Soito last season but their current campaign has been a shadow of that, losing six of their first eight and are more than two wins’ worth of points back from the dotted line. Curiously, they are not the division’s lowest goalscorers. That honour goes to fourth placed Hockeypojkarna, a side that have drawn their way into a mid-table slot ahead of a cluster of sides split by just a point.

Hockeypojkarna missed a penalty and could only draw against ten man Wildcat Wanderers on the opening day, a match which typified a miserly start to the campaign for Hockeypojkarna. In the second match they drew against Liverpool Super Stars. Then they drew the third match, and the fourth match, and the fifth match and it wasn’t until matchday six when anything other than a black circle could be aligned next to a league match in Hockeypojkarna’s ‘matches played’ page. That match – a 1-0 win over Paraiso Montanha – was yet another in Hockeypojkarna’s lack of cutting edge in front of goal and this was followed by a 3-0 defeat against Botosani before reverting to type with a sixth draw of the season against the possible champions-elect.

Paraiso Montanha are the other side outside the drop zone, a point ahead of both Buggen and Liverpool Super Stars; two teams that will be eager to overturn their fortunes and steer clear of the drop zone. It’s still too early to perfectly predict but it’s looking very much like four teams squabbling over two relegation spots in the Final League showdown.

The battle at the bottom...
Position Team Games Played W D L GF-GA GD Points
4th Hockeypojkarna FC 8 1 6 1 3-5 -2 9
5th Paraiso Montanha 8 2 3 3 6-9 -3 9
6th Buggen 8 2 2 4 10-10 0 8
7th Liverpool Super Stars 8 2 2 4 11-15 -4 8
8th C.F. Univ. Craiova 8 0 2 6 4-14 -10 2

With six matches of the season to go there is plenty of time for things to change in the Final League. FC Botosani remain clear favourites to take their fourth straight title with four of their last six league matches being played on home turf but with Soito and Wildcat Wanderers waiting in the wings it promises to be a thrilling end to the season with the relegation scrap still, also, a portrait of production.

Cup and XCL

Cup

Five rounds of this season’s competition have been completed and, so far, the competition’s been relatively tame. The two top seeds are still in it, both Botosani and Hockeypojkarna have negotiated the early barriers and plenty of other skill-rich sides are plying their trade in the competition including the like of Clrnc, Wildcat Wanderers and Jah Crew.

With the big names again being largely kept apart in the draw for the sixth round, it seems we may have to wait a while before the fun – and when I say fun I am referring to the football – starts in the Final League cup.

XCL

The XCL has been a thrilling competition for Final League sides this season. Thrilling if you enjoy defensive master classes that is. In six XCL matches involving Final League sides this season there have been just three goals scored. It has been suggested in some media quarters that the likes of Baresi, Maldini and Lucio have been screening Final League teams in XCL matches with 3D glasses such has been the high standard of defending by them this season.

FC Botosani were drawn into Group A alongside Dfault United of the League of Champs, Psicopatas of the Classic League and Sonata Arctica of the Super League. Botosani took on Psicopatas in the group’s opening game and gave the Classic Leaguers a stubborn welcome to the competition with an assured 1-0 home victory. Roc Cardona scored the only goal in a game which was enough to lift Botosani to the top of the group. A trip to face Dfault United followed, as did a bore draw as the only action of note was the linesman’s correct decision to rule out Quico Taja’s close range strike.

Matchday Three of Botosani’s competition pitted them against Sonata Africa and despite dominating the possession and chances, Sonata Africa stood firm with Jaz in goal pulling off two or three world-class stops to keep Botosani at bay, but that didn’t stop _mr.Xpert_ flying off into another game engine-based rant backed up by chief bodyguard Clint_. Oscaradel was magnanimous in drawing the game but he can be sure that Botosani will be just as, if not more committed, in attempting to win the return game next week.

The results leave Botosani second in the group, level with group leaders Dfault United but trailing on goal difference with Sonata Africa just a point further back. It’s still an open group, though with three games gone, Botosani have so far done enough to progress. Can they maintain that?

Position Team Games Played W D L GF-GA GD Points
1st Dfault United 3 1 2 0 4-2 2 5
2nd FC Botosani 3 1 2 0 1-0 1 5
3rd Sonata Arctica 3 1 1 1 6-5 1 4
4th Psicopatas 3 0 1 2 3-7 -4 1

Hockeypojkarna FC with their manager Rojoso were drawn into Group F alongside Golden League’s 2-Tone Army, Jota AC of the Pro League and of course, the champions themselves, Imperium Sine Fine under the multi-successful helm of GRASSBANDITS. An away trip to 2-Tone promised to be a struggle for Hockeypojkarna in their first XCL adventure for 22 seasons but they handled it well – so well in fact that they stole the three points! Qkey Chair Ten provided the kind of clinical finishing that has been missing for Hockeypojkarna in league meetings this season.

A second away trip to Jota AC followed but this time Hockeypojkarna were not so fortunate and were unable to recover from Noah Waterman’s seventh minute strike, a body-blow for Hockeypojkarna whom would’ve topped the group by avoiding defeat. Last week saw Hockeypojkarna square off against the champions who themselves haven’t been vintage in this season’s competition – and that showed. Imperium Sine Fine were off-colour, Hockeypojkarna were not great and this led to a 0-0 which is unlikely to make an upcoming highlight reel in advertising XCL football. This leaves Hockeypojkarna with a perfectly symmetrical 1-1-1 1-1 record in the XCL and with plenty to play for over the last three games.

Position Team Games Played W D L GF-GA GD Points
1st 2-Tone Army 3 2 0 1 4-1 3 6
2nd Imperium Sine Fine 3 1 1 1 4-1 3 4
3rd Hockeypojkarna FC 3 1 1 1 1-1 0 4
4th Jota AC 3 1 0 2 1-7 -6 3

Hockeypojkarna, like Botosani, will have to step up their performance if they want to make the next round but in groups that are as tight as Lycra shorts, both have as great a chance as anyone else to progress in this competition.

And finally…

Ending this article is an interview with one of the game’s ‘rising stars’. Simonfloyer has only been an xperteleven member for the last eighteen months but in that time he’s made his mark with the Powerpuff Girls, got them to the top of Division 6:21 and likened the change report to a night of fun.

XD: Welcome Simonfloyer to the interview hot seat! I wondered whether you'd be able to tell the readers a little about yourself?

Simonfloyer: Thankyou for having me, I’m a bit emotional right now... not often you get called for an interview ey? Haha. Basically I am Simon and I have been playing for over a year now. I am 24 years young, a sports science graduate and a huge Newcastle United fan... that said my life expectancy has definitely dropped by about 10 years because of this.

XD: You have been part of the xpert eleven site for one and a half years now going off your profile but where was it you first found out about the game?

Simonfloyer: I actually found out about the game via a friend of mine who had just recently started playing. He then proceeded to start up a league which is still going now. In fact we are recruiting right now ;) At first I found the game really hard, I treated it like real football which is a fundamental mistake. For example I played 4-3-3 offensive away from home...who does that? I would say I truly found the game however when I realised I could have an official team and also a ladies team. I find the official leagues a really fresh approach to the game, especially considering the longevity of the game.

XD: Coming to your xpert team then, The Powerpuff Girls, firstly what was it that inspired your team name? Or indeed any of your team's unique and distinct names?

Simonfloyer: Haha, yeh it is quite an interesting name. I actually chose this name for a couple of reasons. Firstly, as a kid I watched a lot of cartoons and this one always made me laugh. Which is quite strange considering I loved shows that contained destruction and fantasy. For example, X-men, Power Rangers etc. Secondly, I liked the idea of having a name that would be better suited for a ladies team as my mens team name. I bet it must be quite annoying getting beaten by a team called the powerpuff girls haha. That said obviously it is all in good spirit. That is after all what makes xpert eleven work, the community is brilliant and very competitive. People adopt different styles of play and there are actually a couple of teams I have a bit of a rivalry with. Namely “New Zealand Vixens” who were in my original ladies league when I started. That said he smashed me in a friendly 5.1 recently... not so friendly right? As far as the player names go I have just been lucky that they have been unique. I have not chosen their names... you really do get attached to your players though, it must be said.

XD: You've been with the Powerpuff girls for just over a year and the team looks to be shaping nicely under your guidance. Do you have a long term team building strategy you're following with the team?

Simonfloyer: I am adopting a youth focused approach, starting off with your traditional conveyor belt tactic. I do not want too many youngsters in the team at once. I need some higher quality players to help maximise DV gains and still be able to compete. In fact I have been quite surprised that I have been able to rise up the leagues with the team I have had. I am not the biggest fan of producing players and then selling them on as soon as they do a double or reach a high value. I get attached to my players and want to reach as high as I can with them. That said I am willing to make a hard decision and if a single player has to go to maintain the squads future then so be it. I plan on selling the players when they reach 29/30 depending on the team’s needs.

XD: Using just your Powerpuff girls team, out of 1) tactical ability, 2) the transfer market and 3) squad development; which would you say is your main strength and which would you say you most need to improve on?

Simonfloyer: I would say that 3) squad development is probably my main strength due to the way I have conducted my team. I believe a very tidy team is being compiled right now. As far as which one I need to improve on, 1) has got to be the winner. Until recently I used to always get low manager ratings despite still picking up wins. These days I definitely read the game better and hopefully will see my manager rating increasing over the next 3 - 6 months. I know that I can have the tactical edge over opponents now but I definitely still need to improve. Once upon a time I would mainly use a 3-5-2 pressure formation because I got great results but now I have learnt how to use different tactics in different scenarios and have definitely been reaping the benefits.

XD: At the halfway stage of the season, your side have won all seven and sit top of the table having scored 26 - almost 4 a game - and having only conceded 1. How happy are you with that start? Could it continue?

Simonfloyer: I am delighted with the start but at the time of my writing this I suffered a shock home loss against FC Tudelano...despite a high manager rating unfortunately Tudelano pipped me on the tactics side of things and really suffocated my attack. Devastating result. However I aim to get back on my feet and pick up where I was before. My form did not take too big a hit luckily and I go into a game I should win. I am worried about the rest of this season however as I face 2nd and 3rd in the last two games of the season...both away games. This is why I love this game, it really does get tense and rivalries form every single season. Obviously the main aim right now for me is DV but I still always want to win. I am certainly not brave enough to attempt an all youth squad development approach...although to be fair I do not believe it to be the most efficient approach anyway.

XD: How important do you believe Special Qualities to be on the game?

Simonfloyer: I think special qualities can have a huge impact on a game although they are not the most important aspect. If I have the money then sure I would like a certain balance of SQs within my team. The problem is that good SQs really bump the price up of players in the transfer markets so sometimes it is not worth it. I think they are a really nice tough to the game. If possible I like to have a nice balance within my team eg, a balance of pace and heading within my defence and goal instincts, pace and heading up front as well as it helps you to be more versatile with your tactics.

XD: I'm sure you've noticed during your time in the Official Leagues that in the lower divisions there is less communication or "banter" between managers. Is there anything that you believe could be done (from a user's or crew's point of view) to improve the communication and therefore enjoyment aspect of the game between managers?

Simonfloyer: Wow this question is a big one for me. I would love there to be more communication going on. Unfortunately I have seen too many teams that just post the same press statement every week in order to get the extra econ. As far as anything to be done, that is a tough one. The press statements were a touch of genius, whoever put them in deserves a medal. I absolutely love the press statements within the game and I like to post them as often as possible. The problem is that there is a much higher manager turnover in the lower divisions, people lose motivation and leave their teams to effectively rot. Maybe if there was a way of supporting new managers within the game so they feel less overwhelmed at first. I was keen so I did my research but others try and play based off their own knowledge of football which is not the best way (I was also guilty of this but luckily it was in a private league). Sorry I can’t offer more really, although perhaps a nursery season where new players are put into a division together and will face less intense opponents... that said it could have the opposite effect.

XD: Moving away from the Powerpuff girls... you are a member of the Xpert Ladies and two private leagues. Could you perhaps explain a bit more about the two private leagues and what prompted you to join them..?

Simonfloyer: Well as I said before, the first league I joined was my friend’s league and that is still going strong. It is called the My45 league and has been running for 8 seasons now. Unfortunately we only have 6 teams at the moment and so we are looking to expand it before the new season. There have been a lot of friends' teams come and go over the seasons and fortunately we now have 6 core members who are extremely active. We just need more like us haha. I joined this league solely for the reason that my friend said it would be a good laugh haha. The other league is called “The Lords of the Dance” and is a much more competitive league. This is another friends league and we have two divisions of 8 teams with a cup. The standard is very high tactically in this league and there is a lot of banter flying around which is awesome. The second division is called “The Squires of the Dance” and basically where all the scum exists haha. I joined this when I was a very bad player after being told this is the place where the big boys play.

XD: What is it about xpert eleven, for you, which keeps you logging in?

Simonfloyer: X11 is a hobby for me. I love the longevity and long term planning. There is no end game for me as well and really the game doesn't require that much time from me. Sure in the off seasons I have to get planning but at the end of the day it is extremely manageable. To be honest, I get attached to the players, I enjoy the progression and the rivalries and beyond all that I love winning. There is very little that is better than a change report, perhaps only sex to be honest. In fact a change report is like sex, especially when it is cracking. When you manage to maintain an extremely high average form coupled with match experience it feels great to get rewarded. I mean when a 17 4 turns into an 18 6 you know you’re doing something right.

XD: What do you make of the Alan Pardew situation at Newcastle? If you were Mike Ashley, would you fire him or keep him? And if you were Pardew himself, would you stay or walk?

Simonfloyer: Haha, a very pressing matter indeed. If I was Mike Ashley I would fire Pardew, he actually did a good job at one point but the moment you lose not only the fans but also the teams confidence you have to go. It’s as simple as that. 5 wins out of the last 25 is just not good enough. Too many new faces without premier league match experience as well is asking for trouble. To be honest I feel sorry for Pardew, he has had his ankles cut from him by Mike Ashley on a number of occasions. The problems stem from him and if it were up to me both Pardew and Ashley would be gone. I just need to make a few billion and I’ll buy them. If only I got a million quid every week plus another 200k for monologuing haha. If I was Pardew I would never walk, it’s a matter of pride. I know if I was the manager I would want to prove everyone wrong. As I said I actually feel sorry for him. I better stop there on this question before I lose it and start crying again haha.

XD: Powerpuff girls or Wacky Races?

Simonfloyer: Simple answer...Wacky Races. As a kid I used to bet with my sister on who would win each race. Was always exhilarating... as far as kids programs go anyway haha. In fact one of my private league teams is called the Dick Dastardly XI for this reason alone.

XD: If you were in charge of xpert eleven development for the day, what one thing would you like to see either added to the game or changed in the game?

Simonfloyer: I would perhaps like to see another way of making money added to the game. Sometimes I feel like if I really want to reach the top levels I will have to start selling players and saving up until I have enough money saved away to really mount an effort to hit the upper echelons of the Final League. That would really mean that I have to wait a year or perhaps longer in order to be able to compete. Would also be cool if another tactical element was added to the tactics screen that added another dimension although I have no idea what that would be.

XD: Thankyou Simon and all the best for the second half of this Final League season!
