You'll Never Walk Alone
At the half way stage of the season, the Ultimate League was extremely close, with 5 points between the top 6. So, who was going to win the title this time round? We pick up the action from Round 8 onwards.

ROUND 8

Spirit of Shankly FC 1-0 AFC Brza (Konchinawa ’29)
Grand Rapids FC 1-3 Steppenwolf Suckers (Evers ’37) (Marmora ’18, Hollyfield ’62, Sireacu ’67)
Diabos de Alvalade 2-1 Stiinta Bacau (Ablett’ 24, Acombley ’46) (Bark ’77)
Jesus and his Pandas 1-0 Lusitanian Warriors (Klincec ’87)

Spirit of Shankly FC stayed top of the league with a 1-0 win over AFC Brza. Lusitanian Warriors, who were just one point behind, had the chance to keep up with them but in a shock twist, lost 1-0 to Jesus and his Pandas who fielded 6 teenagers in the starting lineup at home. One of the senior players, Stanisa Klincec, was on target to score the only goal of the game and give the Pandas the win. That gave both Stiinta Bacau and Steppenwolf Suckers the chance to jump them in the table, but only the Suckers could do that as they produced an outstanding performance to win 3-1 away to Grand Rapids FC and dump W_A_R’s team in the relegation zone, leading W_A_R to admit he may have reached his plateau. Stiinta however could not overtake the Warriors as SocC’s team lost 2-1 to Diabos de Alvalade who hauled themselves out of the relegation zone. So, the Suckers were now up to 2nd, with the team one point ahead of them a team they beat 2-1 earlier in the season.

ROUND 9:

Lusitanian Warriors 0-0 Steppenwolf Suckers
Stiinta Bacau 2-2 Grand Rapids FC (Robles ’25, Surlit ’75) (Maldonado ’47. Ragnarsson ’84)
Diabos de Alvalade 1-3 Spirit of Shankly FC (Rodgerson PEN ’30) (Wilhelm ‘9, Kirkby ’52, Bergendorff ’85)
AFC Brza 0-0 Jesus and his Pandas

Spirit of Shankly once again kept top spot in the Ultimate League thanks to a 3-1 away victory over Diabos de Alvalade with goals from Wilhelm, Kirkby and Bergendorff. New 2nd placed side, reigning champions Steppenwolf Suckers, were involved in a 0-0 draw with 3rd placed Lusitanian Warriors which allowed SoS to increase the gap to 3 points. Jesus and his Pandas continued their unbeaten run after taking points every game since losing to Steppenwolf Suckers by drawing 0-0 away to AFC Brza, but it’s a result which does neither team any good in attempting to stay up. Finally, SocC and W_A_R played out a 2-2 draw as Stiinta Bacau took advantage of the defeat for Diabos de Alvalade thanks to goals from Cristobal Robles and new youth striker Wojciech Surlit to leapfrog them into 4th, despite GR matching them pace for pace thanks to goals from Lucas Maldonado and Tommi Ragnarsson, but it also leaves Grand Rapids in the relegation zone. However, they are only 3 points behind 3rd placed Lusitanian Warriors so it really is anyone’s game.

ROUND 10:

Steppenwolf Suckers 1-2 Jesus and his Pandas (Hollyfield ’55) (Gotterson ’47, Szilard PEN ’86)
Spirit of Shankly FC 2-1 Grand Rapids FC (Kirkby ’25, Wilhelm ’31) (Leadbeater ’18)
Stiinta Bacau 0-3 Lusitanian Warriors (Berberich ’12, Amor ’25 ’47)
AFC Brza 2-3 Diabos de Alvalade (Hunter ’78, Gomes ’91) (Neville ’30, Woods ’45, Rodgerson ’82)

There was a huge shock in this round as the Pandas, who had reached the last 16 in the cup on a long unbeaten run despite only retaining a few of their title winning squad, managed to defeat title challengers Steppenwolf Suckers 2-1. The writing was on the wall early on for the Suckers when Fanea Sireacu went off injured to be replaced by Laban Atkonius. Atkonius then stuck the ball into the net but it was ruled out and the two sides went in level at 0-0. The Pandas then took the lead after half time with their first chance of the game and it’s not the players you would expect to be scoring and assisting as two of the Pandas next generation crafted the move. 20 year old midfielder Gilberto Manuel played a pass to the Pandas’ 18 year old striker Spencer Gotterson who stuck the ball past Max Dungastown to make it 1-0. The Suckers responded as Julien O’Brien set up Brendan Hollyfield to restore parity, but the Pandas won a penalty late on which killed the game off. Octavian Szilard, who is playing in his final season for the Pandas, scored from the penalty spot to give the Pandas a shock victory.

Spirit of Shankly took advantage of this to go 6 points clear at the top with a 2-1 win over Grand Rapids FC. Percival Leadbeater gave the relegation threatened side  the lead from the free kick but Shankly struck back through Matthias Kirkby who has been instrumental in Shankly being title contenders. Enzo Wilhelm then put Shankly in front before the first half was up and the home side held onto their lead to ensure that Shankly had their best chance of winning the title yet. Could they go on and secure it?

That point against the Suckers the last week turned out to be crucial for Lusitanian Warriors as their 3-0 victory away to Stiinta Bacau ended up moving them up to 2nd on goal difference. Gottfried Berberich and Rodolfo Amor were the goalscorers for the Warriors. Finally, the most entertaining game of the day was between AFC Brza and Diabos de Alvalade. Timmy Neville gave Diabos the lead and Mike Woods doubled it just before half time. Hoewever, Brza began to fight back when Quincy Hunter scored in the 78th minute. Hardy Rodgerson made it 3-1 in the 82nd minute before Faridard Gomes pulled one back late on, albeit too little too late. It does little to help Brza’s situation but helps ease Diabos’ relegation fears, its easy to forget that this team finished 2nd last season.

ROUND 11:

Grand Rapids FC 0-0 AFC Brza
Lusitanian Warriors 1-1 Spirit Of Shankly FC (Pirelli ’81) (Wilhelm ‘5)
Steppenwolf Suckers 1-1 Stiinta Bacau (O’Brien ’42) (Astle ’28)
Jesus and his Pandas 0-2 Diabos de Alvalade (Mario ’56, Krippner ’90)

Perhaps the defining round of the Ultimate League season and for Spirit of Shankly as they faced one of their nearest rivals for the Ultimate League title in Lusitanian Warriors. Thanks to the 6 point gap Shankly held due to their nearest rivals tripping up over the furniture, Lusitanian Warriors had to win this one or Shankly would be within touching distance of the Ultimate League title. However, Tiago's men just cannot seem to win the Ultimate League, and at a key moment in the season they slipped up. Key to Shankly’s success has been the midfield trio of Enzo Wilhelm, Mathias Kirkby and Zdenko Buinac and two of them combined to set up the opener. It sent the away fans wild as Wilhelm turned into Sidi Kassine’s net. Shankly were now 9 points clear at the top of the Ultimate League and another point would seal the title, but Lusitanian Warriors would not let Shankly have their way as Marco Pirelli equalised late on.

Defending champions Steppenwolf Suckers’ awful form continued at home to Stiinta Bacau and Christian Eriksen was injured for the Suckers. As one of the players who is crucial to keeping their average age down, this was a huge blow. In a match between the last two Ultimate League champions, Marcus Astle gave Stiinta the lead, however, Julien O’Brien was able to rescue a point for the Suckers; but the real winners of this game were Spirit Of Shankly who ensured that they had a 6 point lead at the top of the league. One of the longest stays in the top two tiers of the Ultimate League was about to bear fruit. In their 11th season in the top two tiers and second in the Ultimate League top flight, they appeared to be in a position become the third new Ultimate League winner in three seasons. But they had to play the Suckers themselves next, in a title race that was far from over.

Elsewhere Jesus and his Panda’s unbeaten streak in all competitions came to an end as they lost 2-0 at home to Diabos de Alvalde. Diabos won thanks to goals from Custodio Mario and 22 year old midfielder Jeremie Krippner, while Grand Rapids FC and AFC Brza played out an insipid 0-0 draw which does little to help either side’s hopes of staying up. Brza were now 6 points behind 5th placed Stiinta Bacau with three games to play and the Pandas were just 1 point ahead. The Pandas being in the relegation zone, while not overly surprising considering the rebuilding state of their team, would be an important moment in Ultimate League history but have they just been delaying the inevitable?

ROUND 12:

Spirit of Shankly FC 1-1 Steppenwolf Suckers (Breckin ’18) (Sireacu ’68)
AFC Brza 3-0 Lusitanian Warriors (Maletic ‘8, Damiassi ’31, Nordberg ‘69)
Grand Rapids FC 3-3 Diabos de Alvalade (Leadbeater ’22, Ragnarsson ’46, Barnevik ‘63) (Ablett ’61 '88, Acombley ‘78)
Jesus and his Pandas 0-1 Stiinta Bacau (Astle ’61)

So, this could potentially be the biggest day in Spirit of Shankly history. If they beat Steppenwolf Suckers and both Lusitanian Warriors and Diabos de Alvalade failed to win, they would be crowned Season 34 champions. The Suckers however weren’t about to let go of their crown lightly. But when Freddie Breckin gave his side the lead the stadium erupted. Not only that, but the news came through that both Lusitanian Warriors and Diabos de Alvalade. HOWEVER, the Suckers were hardly laying down in this game, in fact they were creating plenty of chances and eventually SoS succumbed to it, with Fanea Sireacu the man slotting in to the back of the net to equalise. It’s not the worst situation to be in of course, but the Suckers were a team who still had an inherent belief that they could still win the title, based on doing so last season. But then drama unfolded as Felix Calado was sent off. Could SoS take advantage and score a title winning goal? Well, when veteran striker Brendan Farely was put through on goal it seemed like it would be the moment, however he ended up hitting the woodwork. So, the title celebrations were on ice, despite the struggles of both Lusitanian Warriors and Diabos de Alvalade

Percival Leadbeater was the man who would have been a hero for Shankly given what happened, as it was him who gave Grand Rapids the lead in the first half. Plus, Thommy Ragnarsson made it 2-0 just after half time. However, Diabos fought back with Collin Ablett scoring. Thommy Barnevik made it 3-1 to Grand Rapids just 2 minutes later. You would have thought Grand Rapids would have wrapped it up, but Leslie Acombley made it 3-2 in the 78th minute and Ablett got his second in the 88th minute to seal a dramatic draw and leave the Rapids in relegation trouble.

It turns out the Warriors had opted to give their goalkeeper Cristiano Duarte some gametime. Stevo Maletic’s free kick put Brza ahead before Marco Damiassi made it 2-0. Tony Nordberg made it 3-0 and the way this game was going, you’d think Lusitanian Warriors were the relegation fighting team and AFC Brza the title fighting side. But the most significant event to come out of this round of matches was the relegation of Jesus and his Pandas, who after 7 seasons in the top flight, during which time they won the title four consecutive times, they would now have to face Division 1 again as the first side to be confirmed as relegated. Their relegation was confirmed in defeat to Stiinta Bacau, who thanks to Marcus Astle’s 61st minute strike put enough between the teams to deny any chance of survival for the Pandas.

ROUND 13:

Diabos de Alvalade 3-1 Lusitanian Warriors (Mario ‘8, Bixby ’73 ‘83) (Barrocas ’57)
Stiinta Bacau 0-1 Spirit of Shankly FC (Kirkby ’40)
Steppenwolf Suckers 2-1 AFC Brza (Eriksen ’10 ’73) (Onaga ’56)
Grand Rapids FC 1-1 Jesus and his Pandas (Evers PEN ’73) (Gotterson ’57)

Despite SoS failing to secure the title last time around, they could do so this time away to relegation battling Stiinta Bacau, although SocC’s team were 4 points off Grand Rapids’ after their away win over the Pandas. SoS manager Andyjones opted for a 4-5-1 formation for this one, with the highly rated 19 year old defender Rudolf Areland making up a back four alongside the usual three of Bergendorff, Hogardh and Marriott. The game hardly proved to be a convincing crowning for Andy’s side, who despite going 1-0 up through Mathias Kirkby, suffered setbacks when free kick taker Carl-Oscar Bergendorff went off injured and Enzo Wilhelm was sent off, reducing SoS to 10 men. However, the Season 32 champions were completely toothless and failed to take advantage of the extra man. The final whistle blew and it was official, Spirit of Shankly FC were Ultimate League champions for the very first time, prompting mass celebrations among the away fans. After being relegated in their first season in the top flight, they bounced back and have emerged as champions of the Ultimate League. SoS were the 23rd different Ultimate League champions.

Elsewhere, the last top flight meeting between Grand Rapids FC and Jesus and his Pandas, with this being the 13th meeting between the two in the last 7 seasons, ended in a result that wasn’t ideal for Grand Rapids. Needing a win to ease relegation troubles but with a focus on the cup run, of which they’d gotten to the final, they fell behind to Spencer Gotterson’s early striker. Mike Ever’s late penalty rescued a point for Grand Rapids but it appears the Pandas, who have constantly been a thorn in Grand Rapids’ side in the past, have managed to take them down with them. The Rapids are still able to level themselves on points with Stiinta but it would take a miracle for them to survive relegation now.

AFC Brza were also relegated from the top flight after just one season and had sold off Alex Hadfield and Marco Damiassi going into this game against the now former champions Steppenwolf Suckers, who took the lead from a Christian Eriksen free kick and although AFC Brza got one back through Luiz Onaga another free kick from Eriksen condemned their fate to Division 1. So in one day the title and relegation battles had effectively been sorted, with the all Portuguese affair between Diabos de Alvalade and Lusitanian Warriors not mattering much in the grand scheme of things in the end.

ROUND 14

AFC Brza 0-3 Stiinta Bacau (Hanus ’31, Sturgure ’80, Edgren ‘88)
Lusitanian Warriors 1-1 Grand Rapids FC (Hansen  PEN ’30) (Barnevik ’19)
Steppenwolf Suckers 1-1 Diabos de Alvalade (Marmora ’16) (Ablett ’47)
Jesus and his Pandas 2-0 Spirit Of Shankly FC (Manuel ’67, Dubar ’89)

There wasn’t much to play for on the final round, but Grand Rapids did at least try a last ditch attempt to escape from relegation away to Lusitanian Warriors. Former FC Gheboaya striker Thommy Barnevik gave Grand Rapids the lead and hope of staying up, but Cliff Bjarne Hansen’s penalty equalised things up and left Grand Rapids cut adrift. No further goals followed so Grand Rapids’ second spell in the top flight ends after three seasons, they were title challengers in their first season, losing out to Stiinta Bacau, and in the end they lost a relegation battle against the very same team. With Jesus and his Pandas also relegated it means that Stiinta Bacau are now one of the longest serving team in the top flight… and they’ve only been here since Season 32. (The other one is Diabos de Alvalade).

As it turns out Grand Rapids winning wouldn’t have helped as Edvard Hanus, Florin Strugure and Kurt-Erik Edgren helped Stiinta beat already relegated AFC Brza who had Bength Nyman sent off and his replacement striker Faridard Gomes injured. Have we potentially seen the last of Grand Rapids in the top flight? Brza’s top flight adventure ends after one season with the wooden spoon of finishing bottom and they will be replaced by their friends FK Vucje next season, who won Division 1a on goal difference from last season’s top flight side RAK.

Champions Spirit of Shankly FC celebrated their title triumph by losing to Jesus and his Pandas, who reported 6 players on 19 DV come the end of the season. Gilberto Manuel and Louison Dubar were the scorers. While Steppenwolf Suckers played out a 1-1 draw against Diabos de Alvalade in what was the title decider last season.

Interesting statistic for you, Spirit of Shankly’s title win makes it the 3rd time in a row that a newly promoted side has won the Ultimate League title. In fact, unless they had won it the previous season, nobody has managed to win the title after a failed attempt the previous season since Damocles won it in Season 25. That was a long time ago now though and the post-Pandas era seems to be one of constant change. And there could yet be another with Division 1b’s newly crowned champions JK Besiktas looking like title contenders for next season.

At the end of the season, the league table therefore looks like this:

Spirit of Shankly are champions with Diabos de Alvalade finishing 2nd for the second season in a row. Last season’s winners Steppenwolf Suckers end up 3rd while Stiinta Bacau finish 4th ahead of Lusitanian Warriors. Going down are Grand Rapids FC, Jesus and his Pandas and AFC Brza, the UL loses two former champions. Coming up are a few teams who’ve never been in the top flight before, FK Vucje, JK Besiktas and RAK/Red Bull RC join the top flight party to create a very different looking Ultimate League.

Cup news:

Round 5:

The big news was the elimination of Lusitanian Warriors, who exited the cup and relinquished their reign as cup champions in a thrilling contest. Ze Alguem gave the Warriors the lead but Besiktas equalised through Fausto Sousa. Striker Juan-Maria Terreros then gave the Turkish side the lead but Almiro Barrocas equalised. Terreros then turned in Fausto Sousa’s corner before Feliciano Caballero (not to be confused for the Zabriskie Point striker) made it 4-2. A 93rd minute goal from Konchinawa wasn’t enough to keep the Warriors in and they crashed out of the cup. Watch out, Besiktas are involved in a battle for the Division 1b title and look like potential future Ultimate League champion despite the advancing age of their side. Nevertheless, they are cup contenders.

Elsewhere, Partizan Belgretna and Jesus and his Pandas met each other in a repeat of the semi final in Season 31. From the squads in that semi final, Jed Winder, Sorin Valer, Jeremy Gill, Virgil Walker, Manny Chorlton, Tiberio Landucci, Dejan Zigic and Ambrosio Beca were the only seven Partizan players left. While for the Pandas they only had seven players left in Alnerud, Abdul-Latif, Bornes, Yamase, Szilard, Abella and Klincec.

Louison Dubar gave the Pandas the lead but a Sorin Valer free kick equalised for Partizan, Valer now the main free kick taker for Partizan following the sale of Albert Boder. The Pandas restored the lead thanks to a Stanisa Klincec free kick but a penalty for Partizan, scored by Jed Winder, levelled the scores. Klincec scored a dramatic 93rd minute winner from a free kick just as things looked like going to extra time

Elsewhere the all Division 2 clash between former champions Damocles and rising team Jackie Stamps ended 2-0 to Jackie Stamps. In terms of upsets however there wasn’t really a lot to shout about.

Round 6:

Ultimate League leaders at the time, Spirit of Shankly, cruised past Cairo Nightboats with ease. The team one point behind them at the time, Steppenwolf Suckers, fell to Division 2 side Burbled FC Warriors, who have a good cup pedigree, so the Suckers only ever had one week in three games a week. The biggest shock of the round however was Diabos de Alvalade losing 3-0 to Division 4 side SL-Benfica. Considering Diabos are a top flight side, that is very surprising. Besiktas continued their march towards potential cup glory with a 2-0 win over Piston Broke FC while Everton scored a dramatic 119th minute winner against NK Pivovarna Lasko to progress to the 7th round. Division 3 side The Stretford Enders lost to Division 2c leaders and another potential contender for the cup in COLOSSVS INVICTVS, who after shock eliminations before are really giving the cup a good go this time around. Division 4 side Sporting Club Portugal eliminated Division 2’s Jackie Stamps, IFK Goteborg (the Division 2a side) eliminated recent MOTW winner Kalle’s Swedish Gentleman’s side while in another case of a Division 2 side knocking out a Division 3 one, Arcanta squeaked past Swedish Swashbucklers with Stojan Hibic scoring for the Irish side. We were down to just 32 teams left in the cup.

Round 7:

There were a few teams left in the cup including Jesus and his Pandas who, despite being in the midst of a rebuild, had made it to the 7th round. Could they make it to the last 16 or would the increasing quality of opposition prevent that? Well, they got through, but only just. Aroeira United took the lead through Caj Williamson but the Pandas got level again through Stanisa Klicec. Vidal Abella was sent off in extra time but the game went to penalties. After four penalties, Zeferino Bertram missed his spotkick to give the Pandas the chance to go ahead and Freddie Alnerud of all people was the one to put them ahead. Leopold Myer then missed for Aroeira before Stanisa Klincec sent the Pandas into the last 16.

Elsewhere, Grand Rapids cruised past last season’s cup semi finalists Posh All Stars with goals from Sven Warg, Ioannis Pantelis and Warg again. Current Ultimate League leaders Spirit of Shankly FC overcame Hammer Boyz IF to book their place in the last 16 (Shankly won the cup in Season 23) Kyotiez Killerz are still in it after beating fellow Division 2 side Everton, a potential threat in JK Beskitas overcame Division 2 side PLC FC while another potential threat could come in Joelitos who’s squad wasn’t too far behind the quality of the top flight and were sitting comfortably 3rd in Division 2, although they could only get past Arcanta on penalties. Bad Beat City saw their cup run ended at the feet of COLOSSVS INVICTVS who will also consider themselves strong favourites to win the cup. Keep in mind they are top of Division 2c while contesting this cup run and it gives you an idea as to how much of a threat they are.

Division 1 side s Falkirk Flyers, Bestro, Dave FC and RAK all went out of the cup, Sporting Club Portugal, Vianzo FC Burbled FC Warriors and former cup finalists IFK Goteborg were the victors. Other teams in the last 16 were former top flight side Sampdoria Iasi, Polecats FC, Pelotillehue FC, SL-Benfica and Sporting Mancunia

Last 16:

Joelitos FC 0-2 Kyotiez Killerz (Khabibulin ’4 ‘65)
Spirit of Shankly FC 4-0 Pelotillehue FC (Bergendorff ’13, Farley ’49, Kirkby ’78, Buinac PEN ’81)
JK Besiktas 1-1 COLOSSVS INVICTVS (Gunay ’59) (McTrigg ’34) (CV win 3-2 on penalties)
SL-Benfica 2-1 Vianzo FC (Prunchensik ‘1 ‘54) (Orr ’17)
Burbled FC Warriors 0-1 Polecats FC (McCabe ’62)
Grand Rapids FC 3-0 Sporting Mancunia (Leadbeater ’46, Carter ’52, Elias ‘62)
IFK Goteborg 0-1 Sampdoria Iasi (Miranda ’61)
Jesus and his Pandas 2-1 Sporting Club Portugal (Klincec ’23 ’81) (Augusto ’57)

One of the biggest ties was between two up and coming sides JK Besiktas and COLOSSVS INVICTIVS. The latter are the most valuable side in the Ultimate League but in the league last season, the two were very evenly matched, it was on fine margins that COLOSSVS INVICTVS lost out on promotion and subsequently the play-off. Nevertheless, here was a match between two potential future Ultimate League champions. Graeme McTrigg gave COLOSSVS INVICTVS the lead but they suffered a huge blow when star man Patric Wendell went off injured, youngster Mattis Lindman replacing him. Besiktas responded in the second half by equalising through Yilmaz Gunay. The game went to extra time but when that failed to separate the teams we were to have a penalty shootout.

Rupert Roddick stepped up to give Besiktas the lead, but Tadeu Fruta responded. Greg McPhearson saw his effort saved by Kjell-Ake Cronholm, to which Paulica Hardau responded by tucking the corner into the back of the net. Celso Tabuas missed his penalty and there was a growing feeling that it wasn’t going to be Besiktas’ day, but Richardo de Barros kept them in the tie by saving Graeme McTrigg’s penalty. Yilmaz Gunay however could not convert either, this was a horror show from Besiktas and it meant if Cesar Vilaca scored, Besiktas were out. However, he missed too, and Besiktas were handed a lifeline back into the match. If Feliciano Caballero failed to score then his team were out, so he pretty much had to score. Merltekes appeared to have played a blinder however as Caballero is cool under pressure and it worked. Caballero had scored and COLOSSVS INVICTVS now needed to score, otherwise it would be sudden death. Cronholm the goalkeeper however ensured safe passage and its safe to say that COLOSSVS INVICTVS are one of the favourites to win the cup.

Former cup winners Grand Rapids FC took on Sporting Mancunia, who were in the last 16 for the very first time. Sadly for the Division 3 side, they were without two of their best players, with Sylvester Grenholm and Gerard Thomas both missing. Grand Rapids won a comfortable 3-0 and to top it all off, Marinho de Andrade was sent off for Mancunia. Ultimate League leaders Spirit of Shankly meanwhile continued their quest to do the double by thrashing Pelotillehue FC 4-0.

Incredibly, Jesus and his Pandas made it into the quarter finals of the cup. Stanisa Klincec is cementing his position as possibly the best midfielder in Ultimate League history by taking the newly youthful Pandas team by the scruff of the neck and winning games all by himself. It was his free kicks that won the Pandas the game, so it was a huge b low when he came off injured. Also causing a shock was Division 5 side Polecats FC who knocked Division 2 side Burbled FC Warriors with a goal from Adam McCabe.

Elsewhere, last season’s finalists Kyotiez Killerz made it past Joelitos quite comfortably thanks to two goals from Evgeny Khabibulin, Joelitos had done well do make it to the last 16, but it seems the Killerz were just that one notch above, although Freddy asked after the match if Joel had forgotten to set tactics. SL-Benfica defeated Vianzo FC 2-1 to progress to the quarter finals and former top flight side Sampdoria Iasi progressed to the quarter finals by knocking out former finalists IFK Goteborg with Lourenco Miranda scoring the only goal although Stelian Mihaiescu did have one ruled out for offside. There are no players left from the Sampdoria side of old as it underwent a complete rebuild after diesonne left. Nevertheless, Sstardust will be looking to do what diesonne never did

Quarter Finals:

Polecats FC 1-2 Kyotiez Killerz (McCabe ’53) (Seabury PEN ’15, Horrocks ‘120)
Spirit of Shankly FC 0-1 COLOSSVS INVICTVS (Hardau ’68)
SL-Benfica 2-4 Grand Rapids FC (Alan ’26 ‘38(Revell ‘3 ’47, Evers ’65, Leadbeater ‘77)
Sampdoria Iasi 2-1 Jesus and his Pandas (Monzon PEN ’43, Romeu ‘88) (Szilard ’49)

No doubt as to what the tie of the round was. Ultimate League leaders Spirit of Shankly FC took on Division 2 side COLOSSVS INVICTVS. If you thought that Ultimate League vs. Division 2 would be a mismatch then you would be wrong as COLOSSVS INVICTVS are the strongest and most valuable side in the Ultimate League. Both sides were without crucial first teamers as Enzo Wilhelm was absent for Spirit of Shankly and Patric Wendell was out for COLOSSVS INVICTVS. The Ultimate League leaders saw them played off the park in terms of possession by their opposition, in the first half but chancewise it was actually a lot closer. Tadeu Fruta had an effort disallowed for offside just before half time. The big breakthrough came in the 68th minute when Wendell’s replacement, Mattis Lindman, set up Paulica Hardau for the opening goal. SoS then suffered a huge blow in pursuit of the double when Chris Hogardh went off injured, not the time to be losing one of your best defenders. CI had a late free kick in a dangerous position but it ultimately came to nothing, but the team were in the semi finals of the cup having knocked out one of the favourites to win it. Of course, Pbaiona’s side themselves are one of the favourites to win the cup..

Another one of the favourites are last season’s finalists Kyotiez Killerz, and they were facing surprise package Polecats FC who were the lowest ranked side left in the competition.. Unfortunately for the Polecats they stood no real chance against Freddy’s side, who opened the scoring through Cuthbert Seabury’s penalty. Or did they? Because Adam McCabe equalised in the 53rd minute and Polecats were generally on top in the second half, but found Dave Rees too big an obstacle to overcome. The game was taken to extra time, but Polecats saw Jon Greer sent off with a straight red card. It did look like the game was heading for penalties, but a dramatic 120th minute goal from Mitchell Horrocks

Another one of the favourites, Grand Rapids FC, took on lower league opposition in SL-Benfica. Dwight Revell gave the Rapids the lead early on but two goals from Stevie Alan turned the game on its head. Revell equalised after half time and apart from Stevie Alan, SL-Benfica didn’t really provide a threat. Mike Evers put Grand Rapids back in front in this topsy turvy game and Percival Leadbeater effectively killed the game off. Grand Rapids are of course former cup winners, but they haven’t won the cup in 9 seasons.

Another former cup winner was taking part in the quarter finals as Jesus and his Pandas took on former top flight side Sampdoria Iasi, but the Panda’s luck ran out for this one. Sure, they did put up a fight. They were left to rule first half chances though, with misses from Abella, Manuel and Klincec proving costly when Sampdoria were awarded a penalty, converted by Lorenzo Monzon. Octavian Szilard equalised in the second half however to bring it level again. The Pandas spurned a glorious opportunity to take the lead when Vidal Abella missed his spotkick. To rub salt into wounds, Idilio Romeu then went and got the winner to send Sampdoria Iasi into the semi finals of the cup for the first time in their history. Not even diesonne could manage that.

Semi Finals:

Kyotiez Killerz 1-3 COLOSSVS INVICTVS (Khabibulin ’23) (McTrigg ‘6 ’88, Fruta ‘84)
Grand Rapids FC 2-1 Sampdoria Iasi (Leadbeater ’21, Carter ‘66) (Romeu ‘9)

So, who would contest the final? We start with an all Portuguese affair between last season’s finalists Kyotiez Killerz and powerhouse side COLOSSVS INVICTVS; the most valuable side in the Ultimate League. These two are actually in the same division this season and COLOSSVS INVICTVS had won both encounters in the league. And CV IV (the name is way too long to keep typing out so they will be known as this from now on) made an excellent start when Graeme McTrigg gave them the lead in the 6th minute of the game from Tadeu Fruta’s cross. However, the Killerz equalised through Evgeny Khabibulin who was an important player in the Killerz’ run to the final last season. The game was a pretty even affair with the Killerz determined to make it to the final once again. They brought on Simao Rui Costa for the ageing Cuthbert Seabury towards the end of the game, but a crucial blow was struck in the 84th minute as Adolfo Folque set up Tadeu Fruta for an 84th minute goal. The Killerz had 6 minutes plus extra time to salvage something, but McTrigg sealed the points in the 88th minute to secure CV IV’s first ever cup final. At last, this team that had promised much and was romping its way through the divisions could put the disappointment of failing to get promoted last season by claiming a cup trophy this time around, and they have a manager who’s won a trophy before, Pbaiona was the manager of Dourada Beach Club when they won the Major League Cup in Season 33.

However, there was still one opponent who stood in the way.  And while Sampdoria Iasi did exceptionally well to get to the semi finals, they were up against an opponent in Grand Rapids who had a team capable of winning the cup and were 100% focused on that goal. Grand Rapids dominated the first half and took the lead through Percival Leadbeater’s free kick. Theodore Buisine in the Sampdoria goal was called into action many times and pulled off some decent saves, but the game was over when Danny Carter doubled the lead in the 66th minute. Idalio Romeu’s 92nd minute header was too little too late, but credit  to Sampdoria Iasi for reaching the semis. As for Grand Rapids however, they were into their second semi final in the club’s history. They won the only other one back in Season 25 when Quercus was in charge, can W_A_R win his first trophy in charge of the club? Or will Pbaiona triumph?

The Final:

So, the 34th Ultimate League cup final would be between COLOSSVS INVICTVS of Division 2c, managed by Pbaiona, and top flight side Grand Rapids FC, managed by W_A_R. COLOSSVS INVICTVS had never won a major trophy before but were the most valuable team in the Ultimate League, had just sealed automatic promotion to Division 1 and were managed by a manager who’d won the Major League Cup before while Grand Rapids had won the Ultimate League cup in Season 25 but were all but relegated from the top flight of the Ultimate League and were managed by a manager who’d never won a major trophy before. COLOSSVS INVICTVS were also modelled on the all same age approach while Grand Rapids were modelled on the conveyor belt approach. So in many ways, these teams were polar opposites of each other, but it was a much anticipated cup final between two strong teams.

It is highly likely that unless you read the XCL of the Future articles last year than you’ve never heard of COLOSSVS INVICTVS so the XD took screenshots of the cup finalists squads beforehand so that you can see how both teams are looking and what their strengths and weaknesses were

Pbaiona’s cup run started in the 2nd round where they demolished Division 7 side fcpcontumil 12-0 on aggregate. The next round was much tougher though as they lost 2-1 to Division 5 side Sale United FC. In the end, it took a penalty shootout to send them through to the next round. Another Division 5 side in FC Pinto FC followed but a 2-0 win saw them go by the wayside. Yet another Division 5 side in FC Aarland were waiting in the 5th round  but again a 2-0 win did the job. Division 3 side The Stretford Enders were next up but, yes, you guessed it, lost 2-0. A division 2 side from next door were up next and Bad Beat City took the game to penalties. A 4-2 shootout win saw CV IV into the last 16 where they were up against Division 1b leaders JK Besiktas. Their high flying opponents would become a top flight side next season and gave CV IV a run for their money, but again a penalty shootout secured their place in the next round. They then beat eventual Ultimate League champions Spirit of Shankly FC by a single goal before Division 2c rivals Kyotiez Killerz came up in the semi finals, a 3-1 win saw Pbaiona into the final.

Grand Rapdids’ cup run meanwhile started with a two legged tie against Division 6 side Hollow which they comfortably won 11-0 on aggregate. Another Division 6 side, etoile du sahel, were up next but posed no problems, while Division 7 side Tappara awaited in the fourth round, losing 2-0. League admin DegerforsIF and his Division 3 Klackspark FF side awaited in Round 5 before Division 4 side Old Poochie fell in Round 6. Division 3 side and 4th seeds Posh Allstars were next up but they posed no problems, losing to Grand Rapids 3-0. In the last 16 they encountered Division 3 side Sporting Mancunia, who again they managed to see off  before a 4-2 victory over SL-Benfica in the quarter finals and a win over Sampdoria Iasi in the semis.

The two teams, lead out by captains Kjell-Ake Cronholm and Dwight Revell, arrived on the main pitch of the Xpert Arena. They’d fought long and hard to get here but only one team could walk away with the points. Lets check up on the team news:

Stellan Offsajed was the referee who got this game underway. Mike Evers and Dwight Revell got the game underway, but soon it was COLOSSVS INVICTVS on the ball and they had a free kick in a dangerous position. However, free kicks are not a strength of this COLOSSVS INVICTVS side and Graeme McTrigg’s effort failed to trouble Anton Hakansson. However, from open play they were lethal, as shown by Armand Flachez, whose 15th minute header from Tadeu Fruta’s cross opened the scoring for Pbaiona’s side. How would Grand Rapids respond? Answer, badly, a corner in the 20th minute from Tadeu Fruta was headed into the back of the net by Ross Parker which meant that Grand Rapids were 2-0 down.  Tadeu Fruta got both assists, but in the 41st minute he picked up a slight knock.

Grand Rapids were never really at the races and COLOSSVS INVICTVS dominated the game. Armand Flachez had a shot wide in the 67th minute and in their frustration, Grand Rapid’s midfielder Pedro Grisales got booked two minutes later. Fruta had a late effort in search of a goal he felt he deserved and even Grand Rapid’s free kick taking maestro Percival Leadbeater was no match for Pbaiona’s keeper Kjell-Ake Cronholm.

Full time and COLOSSVS INVICTVS were Ultimate League Cup winners in somewhat ironic fashion given that most of their wins in the cup this season were 2-0 victories. Not only that, they thoroughly deserved their victory, completely dominant against a Grand Rapids side in the top flight. This wasn’t just a cup victory, it was the arrival of a new powerhouse side in the Ultimate League. Albeit one that still needs another promotion to reach the top flight, but even so the promise and potential of this team finally had something to show for the previous manager’s efforts at building a super team back when this side were Defensive FC.

In an old Xpert Daily article, in an interview with Thunderbroom who won the Ultimate League that season, he pointed out Defensive FC as a team with the potential to be the next big thing. 9 seasons later and their goalkeeper Kjell-Ake Cronholm lifted the Ultimate League cup. Unfortunately we were unable to get an interview to cup winner Pbaiona on his triumph, but we would like to wish him all the best in the next XCL, he certainly has a team that could do well in the XCL next season.

Black Lotus 2-0 Steppenwolf Suckers (Waring ‘1, Rujkovcani PEN ‘92)
Lusitanian Warriors 5-0 Partizan BGD (Hansen ‘1, Ze Alguem ’34 ’69 ’71 ‘79)

Steppenwolf Suckers’ first XCL match in their history was against another debutant, albeit a debutant who was one of the competition favourites in Kuni’s Black Lotus. And the Master League side took just 1 minute to score as a free kick from Drew Waring, who is still only 26, found the back of Dungastown’s net in spectacular style. However, the Suckers held their own against their much fancied opposition and had created more chances. They appeared to be getting in the faces of the Black Lotus players, as evidenced by the multiple yellow cards. It looked like the Suckers could be on the verge of an equaliser, but a late run of chances from Black Lotus culminated in a penalty, taken by their goalkeeper Rujkovcani, who sealed three points for Black Lotus. So, could Lusitanian Warriors prevent this from being a bad start for the Ultimate League?

Well, in this case it was the Warriors who scored, at the exact same time as Black Lotus did against the Suckers as Cliff Bjarne Hansen gave them the lead. Ze Alguem doubled the lead from a free kick in the 34th minute. However, after substituting Berberich and Tristao, Partizan began to get into the game and their dangerous striker Vedat Akcreve began to get chances. One of the best strikers in X11 however failed to take advantage and instead it was Warriors striker Ze Alguem who stole the show, as he not only turned his single goal into a hattrick, he then went and scored again to add a fourth to his personal tally as the Warriors ran out 5-0 winners. A mixed day for the Ultimate League then but a great day for Portugal.

Oxford Brewers 5-1 Steppenwolf Suckers (Mentira ’21, Heary ’65 ’81, Walters PEN ‘79)
Lusitanian Warriors 3-2 FC Porto 90 (Tristao ’31 Hansen ’36, Amor ‘81) (Mangala ’42, Holonda ‘85)

This was a match which the Suckers really needed to win, with Black Lotus and Goteborg playing each other, if the Suckers could beat the Brewers then they would be in with a shout of qualifying from this group. In a shock twist, captain Lawrence Donaldson was benched. Not that it made much difference when Oxford’s Freire Mentira gave them the lead from a free kick. Fanea Sireacu came on after halftime but the absence of Donaldson allowed Jared Heary to get by the defence easier and make it 2-0. Oxford then received a penalty which Mark Walters converted before Heary got his second of the game. Sireacu got one back late on for the Suckers but it was too late and substitute Josele Adraos made it 5-1 to Oxford. It was an awful defeat for the Suckers which looks like making qualification extremely difficult.

FC Porto 90 promised to be a tougher test for the Warriors than Partizan, Porto had a very powerful midfield and were very dangerous going forward. However, it was fair to say that their defence was hardly XCL standard and the Warriors took advantage of this to create many chances. Glaucio Tristao opened the scoring from a free kick for the Warriors before Cliff Bjarne Hansen doubled the lead. Eliaquim Mangala however pulled one back for Porto. Rodolfo Amor made it 3-1 in the second half meaning Alvito Holonda’s late goal was little more than a consolation. It appears Porto’s defenders are better at attacking than they are at defending. Nevertheless this was a great win for the Warriors and thanks to Fortuna’s draw against Partizan Tiago’s team went top of the group.

Steppenwolf Suckers 1-1 Goteborg FC (Donaldson PEN ’59) (Dowan ’43)
Fortuna Killiepitsch 0-0 Lusitanian Warriors (Phelan ’51) (Barrocas ’26)

The Suckers were still looking for a win after a 1-1 draw against the powerful Goteborg FC, a team who’ve been around the top for ages and who in Martin Glendalough had one of the best midfielders in the world. Glendalough was outstanding on the day and fed Dan Dowan to open the scoring for Goteborg, but the Suckers got back into the game with Lawrence Donaldson, who converted a penalty against Goteborg keeper Jordan Gill (the third different first choice keeper Goteborg have had in the XCL) to pinch the Suckers’ first point. Still, they needed wins if they wanted to qualify for the next round, left at the bottom of the group while Black Lotus, who thrashed Oxford Brewers 3-0, appearing to be running away with things.

Lusitanian Warrior’s perfect start meanwhile ended in defeat to Fortuna Killiepitsch. Almiro Barrocas took the lead in the 26th minute but the game turned on half time when Ze Alguem was sent off.

Goteborg FC 2-2 Steppenwolf Suckers (Lafferty ’38, Mansiz ’90) (Hollyfield ’31’81)
Lusitanian Warriors 0-1 Fortuna Killiepitsch (Lancaster ’87)

In an entertaining match, the Suckers picked up another point, but saw their efforts to win the match denied in dramatic style. Brendan Hollyfield gave the Suckers the lead in the 31st minute, but Rory Lafferty levelled things just 7 minutes later. Things looked to be even until the 81st minute when Felix Calado played the ball to Hollyfield and his spectacular shot sealed his 2nd goal of the game. But if the Suckers thought they’d won it, they were wrong as substitute Timur Slonov gave away a free kick on the edge of the area. And if there’s a player you don’t want to let have a strike at goal from a set piece it is Kamil Mansiz. The Goteborg defender struck a beautiful free kick to rescue the points for Goteborg and leave them 2nd while the Suckers needed to beat Oxford Brewers next game. The same team which demolished the Suckers 5-1 earlier.

Lusitanian Warriors meanwhile suffered their second consecutive XCL defeat against Fortuna Killiepitsch. They were completely dominated on their own patch and Leon Lancaster scored the only goal for Fortuna.  Still, the club were in a good position to potentially quality.

Steppenwolf Suckers 2-0 Oxford Brewers (Slonov ’14, O’Brien ’30)
FC Porto 90 0-2 Lusitanian Warriors (Albayiev OG ’29, Barrocas ‘85)

The Suckers are fighting for their XCL existence until the end as they secured a 2-0 win over Oxford Brewers with goals from Timur Slonov and Julien O’Brien. And with Goteborg going down 3-0 against Black Lotus, the Suckers were level on points with the Xtreme League side going into the final game of the season… against runaway leaders Black Lotus. And Oxford Brewers were still in with a chance of qualification if they beat Goteborg and the Suckers lost to Black Lotus. Needless to say it was going to take a miracle for the Suckers to qualify.

Meanwhile an all Portuguese affair saw Lusitanian Warriors attempt to seal qualification to the next round, as if Fortuna beat Partizan and the Warriors beat Porto they would be through. Porto’s Rinat Alvayiev struck through his own net to give the Warriors the lead and Almiro Barrocas struck a late goal

Steppenwolf Suckers 1-1 Black Lotus (Sireacu ’72) (Trave ’23)
Partizan BGD 1-1 Lusitanian Warriors (Addison ’56) (Amor ’17)

Both games involving Ultimate League sides saw the away team take the lead only for the home side to pull it back. Young striker Candido Trave gave the Suckers the lead in the 23rd minute before Fanea Sireacu pulled one back for the Suckers. A draw however was not enough to progress to the next round so the Suckers exited the XCL at the group stages. They won’t be back next season.

Also not returning were Lusitanian Warriors but Tiago’s men ensured that they would at least book a place in the last 16 after a 1-1 draw against Euro League side Partizan BGD. Rodolfo Amor gave the Warriors the lead before Carlton Addison pulled one back for Partizan. The Warriors qualified in second place in Group D and would play Group F winners and Classic League double winners Sidro Ultras. Partizan BGD completed a shocker for the Euro League who failed to get a side into the last 16 for the first time in a very long time.

Lusitanian Warriors 2-1 Sidro Ultras (Castelli ’31, Ze Alguem ’67) (Jenner ’72)

A solid win for the Warriors against a team which qualified by winning both the league and cup in Sidro Ultras, always a difficult task. Joao Castelli and Ze Alguem put the Warriors 2-0 up, but an away goal from the Ultra’s Dan Jenner keeps things tight going into the second leg, especially since the game came a day before the Warriors’ change report.

Transfer news:

Struggling Strathmore Saints in Division 1b raised eyebrows by paying over 7 million econ for former XCL winning defender Basil Collett from SparkaSpring FC. The 33 year old is one of the best defenders in the game at a colossal 19 skill and he will be looking to end an extremely successful career by trying to keep the Saints in Division 1. In fact, the 33 year old was part of a full scale overhaul as many players came in for the Saints, including Jimi Tant from Assault on Dark Athena, Linus Mentzer from Boca Jambos, Russel Stephens from Inter Mossley, Andres Iniesta Lujan from Royston Razers (and one time Dfault United youngster) and Rafael Arieas from Egua CF among others. The funding for all these new players was raised by the sales of Norberto Descarga, Gary Delaney, Jared Bolland, Rares Ciorãscu and Matej Kuna. Time will tell what affect the influx of new players will have on the club, but they will need to all gel quickly together or the Saints’ attempts to stay in the division will be in vain.

Following the end of the season, Steppenwolf Suckers looked to strengthen their midfield ranks with the signing of Giovanni Tatto from former top flight side Partizan Belgretna for 6.5 million econ. While in a strange coincidence former Ultimate League champions Damocles sold the last first team player from the title winning days of old, 33/17 midfielder Costy Urdaru, for 6 million. That doesn’t sound so strange until you realise that Urdaru’s new team, The Order 777, are in the same division as Damocles for Season 35. Has there ever been a transfer between two teams in the same official league division before? In the same division, Piston Broke FC splashed out 10 million econ on a 22 year old defender by the name of Bembe Jil from Major League side Djur I Hatt FC. The promising defender who is considered a dead ball specialist is a great acquisition for Piston Broke going into the future.

Finally, Jesus and his Pandas raised eyebrows by paying a combined 8.6 million for three teenagers, Ilyas Teber, Gustavo Bendido and Jeffrey Arthurs. All reportedly are both Hard Trainers and Greedy according to their manager and therefore, worth the high price tags.

Big manager changes:

Strathmore Saints disposed of their manager Sergio_cardoso after an awful run in Division 1. Swedish manager Gabbo_ took over and immediately started a spending spree which you can read more about in the Transfer News section. However, he resigned later and the Division 3d leaders at the time, Red Star Deanshanger, let their manager leave for the troubled club. RRT described the previous manager as a “team wrecker”.

There was also a Romanian merry-go-round after Amerikanu left his post as All-StarS Steaua to take the vacant job at valuable Hattrick League side Falkirk 1876. His successor was a surprise, with Division 1b side FC Raptor’s manager Raptordanyel, who’d led his side into the second tier of the Ultimate League, dropped down a couple of Divisions to take over at All-StarS Steaua. Clearly he feels he has a better chance with them than he did with the Raptors who were facing relegation from Division 1.

Meanwhile, two former Ultimate League champions on the decline saw both their managers leave their teams, as Trozio resigned from Cesaro Hyperforce to be replaced by Turkish manager Ckmk, who’s personal best highest rank was around 5000. Former two time champions Cormorans F.C, now an Division 5 side by the name of Pilgrims AFC, saw their manager decide that after seasons of decline he’d had enough. It is now up to Portuguese manager CGCV1991 to steady the ship and keep the team going. The team was renamed again and will now go under the name of Miticos Utd FC. Desperate times for two teams who could once call themselves champions of the Ultimate League and both are shadows of their former selves with their futures in doubt.

This concludes the Ultimate League report. A season in which persistance in the top flight for such a long time has paid off for one manager while another has shown us a glimpse of the future. Are COLOSSVS INVICTVS the next Jesus and his Pandas?
