In Battle There Is No Law
Once again, the Hattrick League season is a straight shootout between The AntiChrists and Bolt Thrower. And once again, The AntiChrists were edging it, but only just, they’d only gone outright top of the league in the last match against Bolt Thrower so the second leg of the double header was to be absolutely crucial, so lets not waste any time and get straight to the action. Could The AntiChrists pull out an unassailable lead or would Bolt Thrower level things up again?

ROUND 8

Delta Q 2-0 Real Bucuresti (Ardiles ‘4 ‘36)
Bolt Thrower 1-0 The AntiChrists (Spora ’90)
Zalmoxis Wolfs 2-1 Stavie FC (Martins ’50, Kroner ‘57) (Leitao ’71)
Currahee Valiants 0-0 FC Oranges

Well, the big game in the division saw more cards than goals at first, as Januario Spora and Ivan Mino were both booked. The chances started coming and despite the vast amounts of possession from Bolt Thrower it was The AntiChrists who were creating the chances. They were unable to score from them though, but thanks to Claus-Dieter Matern at the other hand who was having an amazing season having not conceded a single goal during the course of the entire season so far. Of course, that run was over in the 90th minute and in typical fashion it also gave The AntiChrists their first league defeat of the season. Januario Spora scored what could turn out to be a crucial goal in the season as the first goal that Matern conceded all season was to Bolt Thrower, putting METALAC’s team back on level terms in the league. Matern had gone 720 minutes without conceding a goal in the league.

Meanwhile, Delta Q were hopeful of starting a second half comeback to save another season that has seen them battling against relegation.. Nestor Cacares is one of the few players in the Hattrick League who isn’t an AntiChrists player or a Bolt Thrower player but regularly gets into the X11…  but he was once on the books of The AntiChrists himself. Gabi Ardiles opened the scoring for Delta and then a free kick straight on goal by Cacares doubled the lead for JeniferDylan’s side. Indeed, it was a day for the underdog as Zalmoxis Wolfs held on to beat Stavie FC and FC Oranges managed a draw against Currahee Valiants. The draw was enough to mean that Delta Q were now out of the relegation zone.

ROUND 9

Real Bucuresti 1-0 Currahee Valiants (Bernal ’25)
The AntiChrists 3-0 Zalmoxis Wolfs (Cassiano ’28 ’64, Davis ’87)
Bolt Thrower 3-0 Delta Q (Mujunen ’42 ’90, Colby ’93)
FC Oranges 0-2 Stavie FC (Everett ‘’45, Viseu ’48)

So, with the top two now level, neither could afford to drop points, which is something which neither did in this round of matches. They both remained level on points but with Bolt Thrower taking top spot on account of goal difference, in part thanks to two goals in stoppage time against Delta Q who had held Bolt Thrower to a draw earlier in the season. This round of matches also saw METALAC become the new World Number 1, overtaking arch-rival Chrille in the process. Elsewhere Currahee lost 1-0 to Real Bucuresti in their attempt to fight against the drop.

ROUND 10

Delta Q 1-1 Zalmoxis Wolfs (Ardiles ’83) (van Hanegem ’77)
Stavie FC 0-1 Currahee Valiants (Henningson ’48)
TheAntiChrists 4-0 FC Oranges (Exton ’62, Stolpe ’73 ’76, Cassiano ’87)
Real Bucuresti 0-1 Bolt Thrower

Delta Q’s hopes for the great escape hit a roadblock after they were held to a 1-1 draw with bottom side Zalmoxis Wolfs. Currahee Valiants took advantage of this by winning 1-0 away to Stavie FC to take 5th place on merit. Meanwhile in the title race, The AntiChrists thrashed FC Oranges 4-0, but Bolt Thrower stayed on top thanks to a 1-0 win over Real Bucuresti. Still, the two sides were level on points, so anything could happen going into the end of the season.

ROUND 11

FC Oranges 1-2 Delta Q (Qvist ;55) (Cacares ’47, Ardiles ’85)
Currahee Valiants 0-2 Bolt Thrower (McAnuff ’72, Crinescu ’89)
Zalmoxis Wolfs 1-0 Real Bucuresti (Kroner ’52)
Stavie FC 0-0 The AntiChrists

A defining round in the season. After holding the AntiChrists to a draw earlier in the season, Stavie FC managed to repeat the feat and become the only side this season to take points away from both games against The AntiChrists. Manager Augustinus was very happy to have taken two points against the “Best Team in Xpert Eleven”. Chrille responded with “I do not share the same joy”.

Still though, Bolt Thrower needed to win against an opponent they have traditionally struggled to beat  when they are away to them and that was Currahee Valiants. Market Garden has been a ground of trouble for Bolt Thrower over the seasons, but they put that aside and went to get the win over Currahee to send METALAC’s side two points clear at the top.

Elsewhere, Cub3mann bemoaned his luck as a strong tactical performance bore no fruit following a defeat to Delta Q. A free kick from Nestor Cacares was followed by a goal from Oranges’ Olle Qvist, but Gabi Ardiles struck late to win it for Delta. That defeat turned out to be costly for FC Oranges as bottom club Zalmoxis Wolfs pulled off a shock win over Real Bucuresti thanks to a goal from Oliver Kroner to move into 7th ahead of Cub3mann’s team. But the result of the day has to be another 0-0 draw for The AntiChrists’ whose hopes of becoming only the third team in Xpert history to win 5 league titles in a row have taken a bitter blow. Bolt Thrower meanwhile were looking like they would be champions in waiting.

ROUND 12

Delta Q 3-0 Stavie FC (Osorio ’19 ’58, Cacares ‘62)
Currahee Valiants 0-3 The AntiChrists (Exton ‘7 ’40, Numan ‘84)
Zalmoxis Wolfs 0-4 Bolt Thrower (Alcoforado ‘5, Spora ’32 ’80, Pollock OG ‘94)
Real Bucuresti 0-0 FC Oranges (Sousa ’13)

A day to forget for Stavie as they were thrashed by Delta Q who’s Houdini act continues again to move them up into 4th place. Both teams were now 4 points clear of the relegation zone and Stavie have two games to confirm their status. Of course, there is still a title to be won but 7th placed Zalmoxis Wolfs weren’t expected to cause Bolt Thrower any problems. Indeed they didn’t, they also appeared to be somewhat self-defeating, as demonstrated when Adrian Pollock put the ball into his own net. The AntiChrists also picked up a win against a Currahee side which used the game as a DV building exercise for the youth team. The AntiChrists won that game 3-0.

Bottom side FC Oranges meanwhile pulled off a shock win over Real Bucuresti thanks to Bruno Sousa’s effort. It was enough to lift the Croatian side off the bottom and dump Zalmoxis Wolfs down there, but Oranges are still 5 points off safety with just two games to go as both them and Zalmoxis were close to relegation.

ROUND 13

Bolt Thrower 1-1 FC Oranges (Alcoforado ’40) (Sousa ’57)
Zalmoxis Wolfs 2-1 Currahee Valiants (Kroner ’72 ’89) (Baranov ’44)
Stavie FC 0-0 Real Bucuresti
The AntiChrists 3-0 Delta Q (Cassiano ‘7, Numan ‘9 ’59)

After a midweek wobble in which Bolt Thrower went out of the cup and drew in the XCL, they needed a result in the league to ensure they would be within touching distance of the league title going into the final game. They were up against fellow Croatians FC Oranges, so would the other Croatians make it easy for them? Well, Oranges were close to relegation and anything other than a win would seal the deal. Bolt Thrower found it very difficult to break them down but in the 40th minute, Alcino Alcoforado, who continues to be one of the most consistent goalscorers in the Hattrick League, came up trumps from a free kick to give Bolt Thrower the lead. However, in the second half, FC Oranges equalised. Olaf Reich set up Bruno Sousa who found the back of Cormac Clifden’s net, they weren’t going down without a fight. Ultimately the resolution wasn’t good for either parties however as they were held to a 1-1 draw and Bolt Thrower’s nightmare week continued. FC Oranges meanwhile were relegated after just 1 season in the Hattrick League top flight.

Bolt Thrower’s defeat gave The AntiChrists the chance to go into 1st place and they played Delta Q who were a bit more secure in the top flight and who used the game to give their youths more gametime. As a result, The AntiChrists were easily able to take the lead as they went 2-0 up in 9 minutes. That became 3-0 when Raimond Numan got his second of the game and The AntiChrists were now level on points with Bolt Thrower, only goal difference keeping them behind which sets up a fascinating final day of the league. Unsurprisingly, METALAC wasn’t too happy with how the round panned out and a long argument between him and Chrille broke out.

Elsewhere, Zalmoxis Wolfs and Currahee Valiants’ Hattrick League futures were on the line. Since Delta Q lost, these two couldn’t afford to draw if they wanted a fighting chance at survival on the final day of the season. There had to be a winner. Yuri Baranov gave hope to Karrde’s survival chances when Yuri Baranov turned in just before halftime, but the Valiants suffered a huge blow when goalkeeper Joshua McDougald was injured. Promising youth keeper Matthijs Koot took his place but it was a bit too soon for him to be playing top flight Hattrick League football and Zalmoxis Wolfs posed a threat. The injury came back to bite Karrde as Oliver Kroner’s free kick equalised the game for the Wolfs and Kroner scored again in the 89th minute to win the game for the Wolfs. After 5 seasons in the top flight, Currahee Valiants have been relegated from the Hattrick League. Zalmoxis Wolfs meanwhile had a chance at survival

ROUND 14

So then, this was it, one of the closest finales in this era of the Hattrick League as Bolt Thrower and The AntiChrists went into the last game of the season separated by just one goal difference. It promised to be an extremely exciting finale, as a win alone would not guarantee either side the title. What’s more, both teams were away from home, so neither could count on home advantage to help them boost their goal difference over the other. This was a straight up lottery, provided both teams won of course.

Bolt Thrower were away to Stavie who had previously held The AntiChrists to two 0-0 draws. The AntiChrists were away to Real Bucuresti who they had already played twice this season and beaten. Let the finale commence, starting with Bolt Thrower’s match against Stavie.

The pressure was on Bolt Thrower moreso than The AntiChrists, with METALAC’s team having entered a slump in form towards the end of the season  having failed to win  their last four competitive matches and going out of the XCL.. So, with METALAC’s side also needing to score at least the same number of goals as Chrille, the presentation of a 5-4-1 formation with 5 powerful defenders from Stavie was hardly welcome.. Bolt Thrower took no chances as they named a full strength lineup, but Stavie proved to be a very frustrating opponent as for most of the match it was 0-0.

However, great news came from El Bernebau as Real Bucuresti had taken the lead against The AntiChrists as rather unexpectedly, Yhukon Wattanasak managed to score a free kick against Claus-Dieter Matern. How often do you see that? Matern is normally a match for any free kick taker and Real Bucuresti had taken the lead. More importantly, Bolt Thrower now lead the division outright.

The AntiChrists still had 45 minutes to turn it around though, the fact that Bolt Thrower were only drawing meant that as things stood, all they had to do was beat Real Bucuresti to win another Hattrick League title. To that end, Chrille did his usual trick of subbing Liam Otway and Paulo Cassiano on at halftime. However, The AntiChirsts suffered a huge blow when one of their superstar midfielders, 18 bar Ivan Mino, was injured. Candido Funcao came on in his place and given Stolpe had gone off for Otway, the strength in midfield had been severely reduced. For a team where everything seemed to be going well over the last week, this was a turn up for the books. However, don’t write them off just yet.

But things got worse for The AntiChrists when Terence Colby gave Bolt Thrower the lead in their match against Stavie in the 77th minute. It seems that The AntiChrists’ attempt to become only the second team to win 5 consecutive official legue titles wasn’t going to happen, this was looking like Bolt Thrower’s season. The AntiChrists’ in the end failed to even score a goal and Bolt Thrower won it by 3 points in the end. So, congratulations to METALAC on securing his 2nd Hattrick League title but the era of the AntiChrists in the league is over… for now anyway. One suspects this team might still have something left in them and they took it to the final  only for everything to go against them in the final game. Chrille was relaxed about the league defeat however, admitting that he would rather have lost the league title this way than to lose it on goal difference.

Real Bucuresti 1-0 The AntiChirsts (Whattanasak ’45)
FC Oranges 3-3 Zalmoxis Wolfs (Stingl ‘3, Granini ’43, Gruevski ‘61) (Soldatkin ’34, Osorio ’69, Bowers ‘90)
Stavie FC 0-1 Bolt Thrower (Colby ’77)
Currahee Valiants 0-2 Delta Q (Cacares ’77, Chase ’93)

Of course, there was still a relegation battle to be decided. FC Oranges and Currahee Valiants had already been relegated, but they both had the chance to bring someone down with them, either Delta Q or Zalmoxis Wolfs would be relegated. Currahee were at home to Delta Q and had the chance to end their long stay in the Hattrick League top flight. However, that didn’t look likely as they understandably played their youth players.. Even so, Delta Q were still struggling to convert and suffered a blow when Kulit Pisang went off injured. 20 year old Lazare Troude replaced him. However, Delta Q broke the deadlock in the 77th minute when Nestor Cacares opened the scoring from a free kick. Matthew Chase doubled the lead in the 93rd minute and it was official, Delta Q would live to survive another season in the Hattrick League, but for how much longer? Goalkeeper Ture Holmgren will be 38 next season and many of their superstar players are getting towards a large average age.

For now though, it meant that Zalmoxis Wolfs were relegated from the Hattrick League after just one season. The Romanians needed to rely on Currahee Valiants to beat Delta Q but the team selection from Karrde meant that was never going to happen, but the resulting game was a thriller Sascha Stingl made the task harder when he opened the scoring in the 3rd minute but Yaroslav Soldakin made it 1-1. Josele Granini put Oranges back in front and 17 year old striker Toni Gruevski made it 3-1. Giacomo Osorio made it 3-2 and Hayden Bowers scored in the 90th minute to rescue a point for the Wolfs. A point wasn’t enough though, the Wolfs were down.

So, the final Hattrick League table looks like this:

Bolt Thrower are Hattrick League champions, ending the run of titles for The AntiChrists. Real Bucuresti are once again best of the rest after another 3rd placed finish but Stavie are the bright newcomers to the Hattrick League with a 4th placed finish. Delta Q live to survive another day once again so Zalmoxis Wolfs, FC Oranges and Currahee Valiants are all relegated, the Valiants being the casualty of Stavie’s survival as their spell in the Hattrick League top flight is over.

Coming up to the Hattrick League top flight next season is FK Ariljac who despite having one of the cheapest squads in the division at 99 million econ and a weak squad overall, took the title thanks to the efforts of the talented Serbian manager Rile, meaning The Corleone Family had to go into the play-offs again. Welcome to the top flight for Arizona Cardinals too who beat last season’s top flight side Gloomy Bear to automatic promotion. Their squad looks a lot like Real Bucuresti in terms of the sheer number of SQs in it, but it has perhaps hit the top flight a bit too late. The final spot went to the Corleone Family who again had to go through the play-offs and were involved in one of the most nail biting penalty shootouts of all time against former top flight side Gloomy Bear. Deadlocked at 1-1 for most of the game, The Corleone Family had the initiative until Belarmino Meruco missed his spot kick to take it to a sudden death situation. After penalties from Noah Warnock and Egil Vanberg, every spot kick taker for the next 5 rounds of so continually failed to find the back of the net. It became more about who would score than who wouldn’t but eventually Gloomy Bear’s resistance crumbled and Oryglur Gudfinnsson scored the winning penalty to send Corleone Family into the top flight.

Unfortunately we were unable to bring you an interview with METALAC, however we did catch up with the only Englishman in this season’s Hattrick League top flight as he saw his time in the top flight come to an end, Currahee Valiants manager Karrde.

XD: Well, it’s over, 5 seasons and just a third under two years of being a top flight side. How would you describe your experiences over the last 5 seasons?

Karrde: When I came to the club and we were in division 8 and facing the footballing equivalent of a bag of broken biscuits the dream was to play with the big boys. I wanted to prove that literally any squad out there could do it... and they didn't have to buy an entire squad of super youths to do it either.

I look back now at how long we stayed in the top flight, and despite what the table shows today after playing the youth team in our final game, we had a real chance of staying up this time too. Our last two games were winnable, We gave ourselves a great chance. It didn't happen this time but I'm still proud that we stayed for so long and stayed competitive through our final season.

Yes we enjoyed our time here and I would like to think that nobody found us easy. If we earned the respect of our rivals and they enjoyed the challenge of having us here. That is as far as this squad could possibly have pushed themselves.

How can I sum up our experience here? I think we really did do something special. We proved that you do not have to look great on paper to be great. I can look at this squad, look at the players I have had over the seasons and say that I got that motley crew into the record books as the 4th best team in the Hattrick League on three different occasions.

What is our top flight legacy? We proved that every single squad out there has the potential. Literally any manager who is willing to put in the time can step up and live the dream. Anyone in any division can be inspired by the Currahee story.

Never give up. The little guy really can do it.

XD: Your team managed to stay up despite being in at the time must be one of the strongest top flights out there? Did you enjoy facing quality opponents like The AntiChrists and Bolt Thrower?

Karrde: Absolutely, it was hard, season after season we had no margin for error... It was worth the effort though. How could anyone not enjoy the limelight! We weren't very good, but we were gutsy and we were famous!

We were where everyone else wanted to be. We enjoyed the fact that when people scouted what the top flight looked like, they saw us and thought "Eh! We are better than them!" Because what is more fun than proving people wrong.

XD: In particular, you always seemed to get good results against Bolt Thrower. In that sense, has Currahee helped shape the title races of the last 5 seasons?

Karrde: I think we have more than made our mark yes. We have had to target certain matches for player development and certain matches as opportunities to gain points. Generally we have always backed ourselves to get a result at home no matter who we have played. Against Bolt Thrower that proved to be correct.

This season we had a Cup catastrophe and struggled to play all our youth players. So found ourselves in a position where the Bolt Thrower home match was essential for youth development and we couldn't have a real go at them... We did give both the top two a scare early in the season though. We were always competitive.

Historically we have punched Bolt Thrower in the nose a few times when we really had no right to. We have even taken a couple of points off AntiChrists at their peak too... Everyone has to be famous for something I suppose!

XD: Your press releases frequently talk about the teams form. Presumably this is your biggest priority during the season?

Karrde: I will admit to a certain apathy of late with talking to the press. Hence the recurring theme... You are right though, it is no coincidence that form is the chosen "easy subject". It simply has to be our priority.

Lets be honest, our squad is thin and our best players are not mega stars. If we go on to the pitch out form it can get embarrassing very quickly. More important than that though is the simple fact that we can not let up for one single season on our youth development. If we do not produce season after season then everything will fall apart.

We do not have money to buy super youths. We have to buy average and turn them into the very best they can be. Form is literally everything. If there is anyone out there wondering how to compete above their level... Invest in training. If you don't then you have no excuses when you fail.

XD: Presumably you are also a big fan of all rounders given the number of them in your squad and how often you used them out of position?

Karrde: Absolutely, the day the lightbulb in my head went off regarding all rounders was one of the most crucial in my managerial history. From the very start of a players career, the ability is so useful. Bizarrely it doesn't appear to be a universally held opinion, as all rounders are some of the least expensive specialist teenagers.

Unless you have the luxury of buying world class players or a team full of super youths, then you have to scratch, claw and find every tiny little edge you can find. If you can add flexibility to your tactics and selection then you had better do so.

If there is one thing I have proved over the last few seasons... with few exceptions, life at the top is a series of marginal situations The extra 1% counts. Sidestepping the opposing manager with the clever and unexpected use of a player has won me countless points in big matches over the years.

One final point on this... If the price of 17 year old all rounders shoots up now, I want credit and for the phenomena to be known as the "Karrde Effect".

XD: Finally, will we ever see Currahee in the Hattrick League top flight again?

Karrde: I hope so. In fact, I think so. It may take a couple of seasons as I think there is some rebuilding to do. This season has been tough, but we were always in with a chance. I look at the upcoming youth and if I am honest, the struggle to stay in the top flight has taken its toll there, this generation isn't quite up to the standard of the guys that brought us up last time.

Not having to find points against Bolt Thrower et al will help take the pressure off, maybe now we will have time to develop our youth players while maintaining our league position. If we are still in Division 1 in a couple of seasons time, yes I think we will come back. We know how to do it.

Maybe next time we will be there at a time when the best teams in the world aren't all in the same place at the same time and third place isn't the best possible position for six teams!

Adios big boys, thanks for putting up with us... it really has been a pleasure.

Cup:

Round 5:

3rd seeds Ramalde FC fell this round to the team slightly unlucky not to be in the Hattrick League top flight this season, The Corleone Family. Delta Q also exited the cup on penalties to division 2 side FC Krikelin. While that was going on though, both Bolt Thrower and The AntiChrists eased into the next round. Former cup dominators Samba Juniors had also advanced to the 6th round.

Round 6:

4th seeds Just Another Team met their end in this match as they were eliminated by Real Bucuresti, while Samba Juniors were eliminated by last 16 finishers from last season and Division 2 side Coolife. The numbers were gradually reducing although with Bolt Thrower and The AntiChrists both still in the cup, were there any other teams out there who felt they were capable of winning it?

Round 7:

The Hattrick League cups top two seeds continued to carve open the opposition but a few higher seeded sides still went out. 12th seeds and Division 2 side Coolife exited to Romanian Division 3 side TITANII X11 while 23rd seeds But Masters exited the competition at the same stage as last season with a 4-1 defeat to 195th seeds Tug-o-War. There was also a top flight casualty in FC Oranges, who lost to former top flight side Sisjo Broz FK who are currently in Division 4 (their manager Pirog has now been in charge for 37 seasons, that’s some commitment).

Also qualifying for the next round were Los Nisu, Fight 4 Fame 2012, Real Bucuresti, FC LULE, FK Arlijac, The Corleone Family, ADS Sande, Lilo FC, Minimal FC, Ruby Bouncers FC and CSKA Larsa.

Round of last 16:

The Corleone Family 0-0 Bolt Thrower (Bolt Thrower win 5-3 on penalties)
TITANII X11 0-3 The AntiChrists (Stolpe ‘6, Ratib ’28, Exton ’54)
Lillo FC 1-2 Los Nisu (Medina ’42) (Rakitic ‘4 ’91)
Fight 4 Fame 2012 0-1 ADS Sande (Barricada ’39)
Real Bucuresti 4-0 Minimal FC (Bernal ‘8 ‘80, Yarmolenko ’46 ’91)
FC LULE 2-0 CSKA Larsa (Rotchen ’23 ’79)
Ruby Bouncers FC 2-2 FK Ariljac (Mudge ’80, Rodberg ’86) (Ristic ’11, Begic ’14) (Bouncers win 4-2 on pens)
Sisjo Broz FK 2-3 Tug-o-War (Ekborg ’47 ’63) (Aafloy ’45 ‘83, Dobson ’56)

Huge scare for Bolt Thrower who were held after extra time to a draw by Division 1 side The Corleone Family, but METALAC’s side went on to win the tie on penalties. The AntiChrists had no such trouble against TITANII X11 while Los Nisu beat Lillo FC thanks to two goals from Ivan Rakitic. Briscarie went out at the last 16 this time having been seeded 8th, ACD Sande proved too much to handle as a Division 1 side. Ruby Bouncers FC meanwhile had to go to penalties to beat FK Ariljac while Tug-o-War are proving to be the surprise of the cup and as their name suggests they were involved in a real Tug-o-War against Sisjo Broz FK. Aafloy put Tug ahead before Ekborg equalised. Dobson put Tug back in front but Ekborg was the man for Broz to make it 2-2. Aafloy finally killed the game off to win 3-2 and put Tug-o-War into the quarter finals.

Quarter Finals:

Bolt Thrower 3-0 ADS Sande (Colby ‘2 ’25, Iacobeanu ’60)
The AntiChrists 0-0 Los Nisu (The AntiChrists win 4-1 on penalties)
Tug-o-War 0-1 Real Bucuresti (de Bruin ’16)
Ruby Bouncers FC 1-2 FC LULE (Mudge ’51) (Lundgren ’75, Singh ’77)

Bolt Thrower secured progression to the semi finals after a simple 3-0 victory over Division 1 side ADS Sande. The AntiChrists however were held to a goalless draw against Los Nisu, their second in four days following the draw with Stavie, needing to win 4-1 on penalties to progress.

Tug-o-War’s outstanding cup run came to an end against top flight side Real Bucuresti, but they didn’t half go for it. Manager Plasbit can be extremely happy with his charges as they matched Real Bucuresti in the chance stakes. Unfortunately for Tug-o-War, the signing of Baldemiro Basti for Real Bucuresti earlier this season proved to be the key difference and the 19 bar keeper was outstanding to deny Tug-o-War a single goal. Arno de Bruin scored the crucial goal for Real to send them to the semi finals. Finally, FC LULE beat Ruby Bouncers FC with the decisive goal coming from a free kick by Fazli Singh. LULE had to come from behind though after Mike Mudge had given Ruby Bouncers the lead.

Semi Finals:

FC LULE 1-0 Bolt Thrower (Nieto ’84)
The AntiChrists 3-1 Real Bucuresti (Davis ’53, Cassiano ’73, Mino ’76) (Bernal ’60)

The draw kept apart The AntiChrists and Bolt Thrower, meaning there was the potential for the final to be contested by these two sides for the third time in a row. Still, from the leftover sides it was Bolt Thrower who arguably got the easier draw, with Real Bucuresti having firmly established themselves as “Best of the Rest” in the top flight for the last few seasons, below The AntiChrists and Bolt Thrower. It didn’t turn out that way however, as FC LULE produced a huge shock to knock Bolt Thrower out of the tournament and in doing so hand The AntiChrists a lifeline for next season’s XCL. Xose Nieto was the man who struck the decisive blow to end Bolt Thrower’s double hopes.

The AntiChrists got the job done in the all top flight affair against Real Bucuresti with a 3-1 victory. Craig Davis gave them the lead before Iker Bernal equalised for Bucuresti. Paulo Cassiano and Ivan Mino put the AntiChrists back in front to secure passage to the final for Chrille’s team where they’d face FC LULE

The Final

So, the 41st Hattrick League cup final would take place between The AntiChrists and FC LULE. The AntiChrists had won 3 out of the last 4 Hattrick League cups and this would be their 12th major trophy if they won a final in which they were heavy favourites. FC LULE though could not be underestimated, they did after all knock out Bolt Thrower. With Chrille having previously mentioned in interviews that he real goals were XCL titles with the team, those in The AntiChrists’ camp must have feared for their participation in XCL 40 with the possibility that Bolt Thrower would win the title, but things had recently taken a turn in The AntiChrists’ favour with Bolt Thrower going out and then drawing level with The AntiChrists’ in the title race.

But let’s not get too down on FC LULE who if things went in their favour had a real opportunity of playing in the XCL. They previously had a long spell in the Hattrick League top flight between Seasons 26 and 29 and were involved in one of the most competitive top flights ever in Season 28. That was a long time ago now though and only 8 players of the current FC LULE squad played in the Hattrick League top flight

The AntiChrists’ path to the final

5-0 and 8-0 vs. Moy Rovers
1-0 and 1-0 vs. Spartak Syldavia
1-0 vs. Ljungskile Sportklubb
3-0 vs. DIFs fina grabbar
3-0 vs. Parkway Forest FC
2-0 vs. Out of ContrOL F.C
3-0 vs. TITANII X11
4-1 vs. Los Nisu
3-1 vs. Real Bucuresti

FC LULE’s path to the final:

5-0 and 5-0 vs. AC Milan99
2-0 and 1-0 vs. Kramers Koalor FC
3-1 vs. FC Barcalana
2-0 vs. GKS Tychy
3-0 vs. Stabaek IF
3-1 vs. Eskorbutin Athletic
2-0 vs. CSKA Larsa
2-1 vs. Ruby Bouncers FC
1-0 vs. Bolt Thrower

The main pitch on the Xpert Arena was packed to the rafters with both sets of fans. It was a big occasion for FC LULE but for The AntiChrists it was clear they knew the Xpert Arena inside out, having played many Hattrick League cup finals and Xpert Champions League finals there. Bolt Thrower are the only side to defeat The AntiChrists in a Hattrick League cup final so things didn’t seem so good for FC LULE. The teams were as follows

The AntiChrists
1 GK Claus-Dieter Matern

2 RB Stephen Bainbridge
14 CB Tiago Soares
22 CB Roger Federer
11 LB Sakib Ratib

13 DM Craig Davis
26 DM Julien Exton

21 RM Greger Stolpe
25 AM Ivan Mino
3 LM Raimond Numan

4 CF Josef Pawlowski

Bench:
20 DF Ronald Norris
30 DF Donnie Kinnell
17 MF Liam Otway
18 MF Stuart Carrick
23 FW Paulo Cassiano
FC LULE
1 GK Nick Myers

25 CB Jurgen Ziehaus
16 CB Ilie Oae
4 CB Fazil Singh

12 DM Freddie Fredsson
24 DM Bruno Olsson

17 RM Nils-Gunnar Lundgren
13 AM Xose Nieto
15 LM Jozef Kalizman

9 CF Roger Rotchen
11 CF Jo Fukunaga

Bench:
26 GK Svante Wik
18 DF Alin-Andrei Merceanu
22 MF Alberto Santurovo
10 FW Alioum Ndorin
23 FW Nicolas Ndeh

The referee was Ian Hartman, who got the game underway and 14 minutes later, booked LULE defender Fazel Singh and gave The AntiChrists a free kick. You can’t give Julien Exton these opportunities, he usually scores from them, and so it was that Exton put The AntiChrists ahead with a free kick.

However, it was FC LULE who struck next as Jo Fukunaga teed up his strike partner Roger Rotchen and he managed to do something few people do, score a goal against The AntiChrists. 1-1 and it was now game on. The game came to halftime with the scores level, but The AntiChrists had had many more chances than FC LULE.

Greger Stolpe put The AntiChrists 2-1 up after halftime and the name of The AntiChrists was on the Hattrick League cup once again. Another Julien Exton free kick sealed the deal and it appeared that FC LULE had given up. They offered no threat whatsoever and their highly skilled opponents were able to control the game.

Full time then and it was yet another trophy for The AntiChrists, their 9th major trophy in the Hattrick League alone and their 12th in all competitions. With the club in contention for the league title on goal difference, they could yet add to that. If they did, then FC LULE would be playing XCL football. Alas, The AntiChrists' didn't win the title so FC LULE won't have to enjoy/endure the XCL next season. Speaking of which...

Das Wunderteam 0-3 The AntiChrists (Davis ’37 ’65, Numan ’68)
Bolt Thrower 2-0 Sons of the Phoenix (Alcoforado ’35, Colby ’77)

After losing only their second XCL match, The AntiChrists looked to make amends against Das Wunderteam and they did so quite comfortably. ST0N3’s side were thrashed 3-0  in their own backyard. Craig Davis in particular was a star, scoring the first two goals before Raimond Numan added a third. The AntiChrists still trail SparkaSpring by three points… but they face Sparka in the final round and their place in the next round was now assured after this victory.

Bolt Thrower also secured qualification to the next round and as the top seeds in the group after beating Sons of the Phoenix 2-0, with goals from Alcino Alcoforado and Terence Colby.  Assault on Dark Athena were beaten 2-0 by Vulturii Lugoj (formerly Dynamite Devils) to make the group look like one that Bolt Thrower had comfortably dominated.

SparkaSpring FC 2-1 The AntiChrists (Newman ’83 ‘88) (Ratib ’14)
Bolt Thrower 4-1 Vulturii Lugoj (Colby ’69, Alcoforado ’74 ’92, Mujunen ’78) (Diawara ’17)

The AntiChrists took the lead in this top of the group clash away to Sparka, with Sakib Ratib giving them the lead inside 14 minutes, while Sparka also subbed Konstantin Suslov off due to him taking a knock. Olgierd Hampel’s equaliser was then disallowed for Sparka but they were the better team in the second half after the introduction of Lucho Gonzalez and Mark Heidenreich late on. It wasn’t a name you’d expect to see who would win it however, as the game was turned on its head in the last 10 minutes thanks to 20 year old midfielder Broderick Newman, a player that Svajo signed from POISONEDCHALICE of all people.. His two goals, both set up by Ricardo Rodriguez, gave Svajo the group lead while The AntiChrists were forced to settle for 2nd place. In an interesting twist, both teams were drawn against Master League sides.

Bolt Thrower meanwhile had already won the title, but still proceeded to beat Vulturii Lujog 4-1, the team that were known as Dynamite Devils earlier in the season. The new manager added another midfielder in free kick taker Modeste Diawara to the squad during the Pro League off-season and it was his free kick which gave Lugoj the lead. It didn’t look like it was going to happen for Bolt Thrower after Alcoforado missed a penalty but goals from Colby, Alcoforado and Mujunen combined with a red card for Lugoj’s Ruca Arias ensure a 4-1 victory. Bolt Thrower were drawn against Xpert League side Folklore Flamenco

The AntiChrists 2-0 Black Lotus (Davis ’29, Mino ’89)
Folklore Flamenco 0-3 Bolt Thrower (Alcoforado ‘5 ’55, Colby ’61)

Arguably the tie of the round was the match between The AntiChrists and Black Lotus, two of the competition favourites pitted head to head against each other. However, the strength of The AntiChrists won out against a still quite young Black Lotus side. Craig Davis and Ivan Mino scored twice to put The AntiChrists 2-0 up going into the second leg with no away goal conceded.

Folklore Flamenco meanwhile have an uphill task as they lost 3-0 to Bolt Thrower, two goals from Alcoforado and another from Colby ensured that Zanza’s men have a real mountain to climb come the second leg.

Black Lotus 0-2 The AntiChrists (Waring OG ’86, Stople ’92)
Bolt Thrower 2-0 Folklore Flamenco (Alcoforado ’19, Colby ‘63)

After going 2-0 up in the first leg, The AntiChrists will have fancied their chances in the second leg. They dominated possession in the game and stopped Black Lotus from finding a route back into the game. A Block Lotus did score in the end but it was an own goal as Drew Waring turned into his own net.

Zanza already knew he was out, so played a reserve team against Bolt Thrower, who went on to score two more goals and progressed easily to the next round.

A.D. Manteigas 0-0 The AntiChrists
EX6 1-1 Bolt Thrower (Maul ’33) (Zetti ’87)

No wins for the Hattrick League sides in this round as both were held to draws, but with both away in the first leg, that isn’t a bad thing. The AntiChrists played against newly promoted Xtreme League side A.D. Manteigas who’ve been the surprise package of the tournament so far and one of the strongest up and coming sides in the Xtreme League. The other two, Antimon Zajaca and Smoke Jaguars, also got promoted.

EX6 were somewhat fortunate in securing a draw against Bolt Thrower. The Croatian side played EX6 off their own pitch, but when you have a Sith Lord on your team anything is possible and Darth Maul, like he did with Joshua Routhledge two seasons ago, used Force Choke on Cormac Clifden to make him suffer and help EX6 take the lead. Vitor Zetti struck a crucial late equaliser though to deny EX6 and in truth it was coming, Maul’s goal was the only chance for EX6. A big away goal for METALAC’s side gives them the advantage going into the second leg, but the job is far from done.

The AntiChrists 1-0 A.D. Manteigas (Cassiano ’92)
Bolt Thrower 1-2 EX6 (Spora ’26) (Cabeca ‘5 ‘93)

After getting through without an away goal conceded, A.D. Manteigas will be glad to come out of the tie on an even level but winning at St. Ameno is near to impossible so they were up against it when playing The AntiChrists. 21 year old Ercument Dursan stuck the ball in the net in the first half to send the crowd wild for a brief few seconds, but the goal was ruled out. The AntiChrists brought on Paulo Cassiano in the second half and he was looking frustrated as his attempts to get the winner failed. It looked like it would be heading to extra time in the 91st minute when Cassiano missed and that seemed to be that, but just one minute later his endeavours ensured he would be rewarded and The AntiChrists were through to another XCL semi final. Another semi against Bolt Thrower could potentially be on the cards… but that wasn’t to happen.

Bolt Thrower would need to arrest a slump in form that included the last game against EX6 to progress. But EX6 in this situation two seasons ago nearly knocked out SparkaSpring. Manager Rbjayb didn’t seem to be too interested in going further in the XCL according to his PRs, but it may have been a ploy for Bolt Thrower to take it easy on them as EX6 fielded a full strength lineup and took the lead to reduce Bolt Thrower’s away goal advantage inside 5 minutes, Gerardo Cabeca with the goal. Januario Spora levelled things up and we now had a dead level situation. This was a tie there to be won and all of a sudden, EX6 were the kingmakers. Bolt Thrower defender Jasper Scheepens went off injured in the first half and it appears that METALAC’s men are still chasing those last bits of DV for the young players.

The game remained deadlocked during the second half and extra time appeared to be on the horizon when Dino Carmelo’s corner was headed out of the box, but came back to Gerardo Cabeca and the EX6 midfielder let rip to knock Bolt Thrower out of the XCL. Unbelievable scenes in the EX6 dugout while for Bolt Thrower it was the ultimate disaster, they might not even be in the XCL next season and memories of MM United in Season 35 came flooding back, when Bolt Thrower went out to the only goal they conceded in the competition.

The AntiChrists 1-1 EX6 (Stolpe ’84) (Camconi ’80)

The first leg of the semi final between The AntiChrists and EX6 promised to be an interesting affair. On paper, The AntiChrists were much stronger than EX6, but they had just had a change report and EX6 had knocked out Zabriskie Pooint and Bolt Thrower already so weren’t to be underestimated. But then again, perhaps their underestimation is what carried them this far? Because there was no way Chrille was going to underestimate EX6. Its hard to believe that they are bottom of the Dream League, but on closer inspection, the first team haven’t actually been playing 3 games a week at all, they’ve all been rested for the league games with a reserve side playing.

It was a very tight first half, with The AntiChrists only just edging the possession but not by much and Stephen Bainbridge picked up a knock. The second half was just as tight, but that all changed when Robertho Kittboom set up Rico Camconi on the breakaway and Camconi gave EX6 the lead. This seemed to wake up The AntiChrists who attacked with more aggression. Greger Stolpe saw his effort hit the post, but he was on hand to put in the rebound and equalise. Suddenly the game became end to end and EX6 scored with only their second chance… or did they? Ted Jarvin’s effort was disallowed so it was still 1-1, which was the final scoreline. Overall, a fair result and while EX6 have the advantage in terms of away goals, this tie was still very much in the balance with The AntiChrists having got a desirable result following their change report and would look to give EX6 a challenge in the return leg.

Transfers:

Bolt Thrower decided to sell on veteran defender Ludano Zanchi. The 32 year old, 19 bar defender is a club legend and is part of one of the strongest ever backlines along with Alcoforado, Crinescu and Vaz. However, with the team ageing, Bolt Thrower decided to adjust the roster to cope with the two way average age rule and Zanchi proved to be the player to make way. Bolt Thrower netted nearly 18 million econ for him.

Fellow Croatians decided to sell uber talented striker Valerio Pelzer for an eye watering 25 million econ. Cub3mann decided to cash in on the fact that he was an undervalued 22/12 to net a very tidy profit.

Manager changes:

Division 1b side Super Drogs appointed a new manager when Lumbo1873 left  Linn Park Amateurs, also of the Hattrick League, to move further up the league and take over from Snake1923rapid. He joins a very young side with potential. The team has been renamed Smokin Aces ahead of the new season.

Also in Division 1 but of the a variety, Clube Fluvial Portunese appointed another Portuguese manager in Edjp2002. It is hoped that following their relegation, that keeping the manager Portuguese will help with communication.

Former Hattrick League top flight side Real Madrid -10- got a new manager in Olof to replace the old one, while another Division 2 side in Hathershaw FC got a new manager in MichaelCritchton, a manager with Division 2 experience. Unfortunately, aside from these changes there wasn't much else to bring you here.

So, The AntiChrists' run of titles is over... for now. Will they strike back next season? Can Bolt Thrower retain the title? Will Real Bucuresti improve on their 3rd place finish? Or will there be a new name on the Hattrick League trophy? What kind of impact will Arizona Cardinals, FK Ariljac and The Corleone Family have next season? Final out next time...
