XCL - the 10 most shocking moments!

This season the XCL celebrates its 40th birthday; not quite pipe and slippers but middle aged and greying nonetheless. During the competition’s 40 season history there have been shocks, spills, triumphs, failures, exciting games, boring games and so much more. To commemorate this, the Xpert Daily will take a look at ten of the competition’s most shocking and iconic moments, what they did for the game and why they stick out in the memory. This list is entirely subjective – you may have your own in which case feel free to share them in the comments section – but first a brief mention of the few iconic moments to have just missed the cut…   In XCL XVIII The Perishers defeated BK Hammarslag in the Quarter Finals 2-5 on aggregate, after Extra Time. The Perishers won the first leg 2-0 but that was cancelled out in the second by goals from Ölmestrand and Sverkersson and Hammarslag looked favourites to go through until Sverkersson’s 86th minute red card, The Perishers took advantage with three Extra Time goals and the rest as they say is history… In XCL XIX BK Hammarslag won their third title against FC Ballbreakers despite Ballbreakers being overwhelming favourites and many had them down as the first team to break the Swedish curse. A special mention also for Matchday One of the XCL XXIV – CelticLegend’s Mighty Maggots caused a shock by defeating ShaggyDude’s three times finalists, FC Ballbreakers – and for mentioning that I now have permission to post this article ;), this was something the wee yin was particularly proud of as he revealed to me in an exclusive reminiscent interview discussing the game and the seasonal topic of formations to use when picking a team.  “It was certainly a great achievement for the Mighty Maggots back then in their XCL debut match. The greatest achievement was winning the Classic League cup to make it into the XCL and I rank my win against the Guardian Angels later in the group stages as a bigger win. After all they were runners up in the previous XCL and for a Classic League team at that time to beat an XCL finalist was a big thing.”   “However as it was my first XCL match it was a special moment for me to beat one of the most famous teams in the game. I wasn't expecting anything when I saw Pickford being sent off. Then 8 minutes later it flashed up penalty!!! I couldn't believe my eyes, of course even then I thought oh no he's gonna miss it. When we went 1-0 up I was still expecting it to be a draw however as you can imagine I was over the moon when the final whistle went and we won 1-0.”     “I believe I pretty much had to play 5-3-2, I think there are enough formation choices and I consider them all worthwhile playing in the right situation. Many will disagree with me but there are most certainly more than 2 usable formations and they are in my opinion just as effective today as it was back then. Okay maybe some are slightly better or worse compared to "back in the day" however I still reckon 4-3-3 is just as good as it's ever been. I was always more of a fan of 3-4-3 back then but these days I think the way DV works out on the different areas of the team it tends to be easier to have more midfielders get higher development and thus you tend to set your team up in a way you tend to play 3-5-2 or 4-5-1 more often.”  “People seem to think these are the only winnable formations however if it was easier to get DV on forwards I'd be playing 3-4-3, 4-3-3, and 5-3-2 far more often. I'm the type of player who loves to play a larger variety of formations however it seems I play fewer options due to DV rather than the so called stronger formations. If you had a strong 3-4-3 side and played it you'd be just as likely to be successful as 3-5-2.”   So those are the ones to just miss out, now let’s get on with it and look at ten of the most shocking moments in XCL history…     10 – No loyalty for these cousins     Back in 2009 and 2010, two cousins rose to prominence and to the top of the global rankings as the foremost big hitters: Gildar, Nobego and Motorroger all receded into mediocrity or inactivity after their time at the top. The two men were Rachmed and HakanCaglak, both bright, upcoming managers but both of whom were under intense scrutiny as to how they had made it to the top.   Rachmed rose all the way to number one in July 2009 and this allowed him to take over the recently vacated seat at Adrenochrome after Gildar’s resignation. Rachmed led the team to two XCL Quarter Finals before his team eventually went into decline before inexplicably leaving the team to ruins, depleting them of their funds as he went to chase glory elsewhere and incurring the wrath of the Xpert Forum in the process.   However what his cousin, HakanCaglak did, was even more controversial. Managing Gökturk Empire of the Classic League, HakanCaglak led his side to a cup title and two league titles to become one of the Classic League’s most decorated managers. Questions were asked as to his loyalty and HakanCaglak shrugged them away, supposedly assuring Classic League members that he would be around to oversee a rebuild and take Gökturk on their way back to glory. However it was not to be, within a matter of weeks Hakan had handed in his resignation at Gökturk Empire to pave the way to become manager of Final League side, PoLo ViP (soon to be renamed as the Immortal Penguins). The Classic League was incensed! Scorning dislike on Hakan for what they could see as a clear example of traitorhood; going back on his word and unwilling to help rebuild the side.   Such an act did not go unnoticed by the crew whom tightened up their Job Centre requirements to account for loyalty over skill bars alone, ensuring (w)ranking hoppers were a thing of the past. Over five years since the incident, the Xpert Daily caught up with HakanCaglak to pick his mind on the debacle and whether it was Gökturk’s XCL Quarter Final defeat against Preston NE in XCL XX which encouraged Hakan not to rebuild the team and instead look for success elsewhere.    “First of all, I'd like to say that [the] Classic League and Gökturk Empire was the best for me in xperteleven. I got every emotion there. Victory, defeat, drama, hate. Pretty much anything. If there’s a time I just can’t forget about xperteleven, it is that time.”   [When asked about XCL XX and his thoughts about his side’s run that season] “Ah XCL XX. Great times. Smögens IF in that time was probably one of the strongest official teams ever in xperteleven history. They were strong, real strong. I still remember how everyone shocked that I eliminate them. Well, even I was shocked. And yeah. I totally believed that I can win all the way. After all I was just getting rid of biggest obstacle out there. But it was a costly one. 3 games per week, and all with strong teams. Not enough time to train and biggest nightmare for managers who uses narrow squads like me, a lot of injures. And my empire was fallen. It was disappointing. After all I was planning to win it all you know. But it was understandable. I kinda remember that Preston manager was able to get my tactics pretty good. So it was a deserving loss. But I was proud. My team was amazing. And I represented classic league fairly well.”   “Honestly, the plan was the rebuild all the time. But two things changed my mind. First one was simply I wanted to get the crown. I wanted to be a hall of famer. Even now, I came back to game after 2 years just for that. It is the only thing that i am missing and I still want it. But at that time team strengths between leagues was too much. I mean, even though i was able to use a great tactic it wasn’t enough because of team strengths. But even then i was still planning to stay. But then, drama in scribble and forums started. Team hoppers vs loyal guys. Hard times lol. And sadly, some of guys in classic league, and I really see them as friends was attacking me, and when I see this, let’s just say, made me really sad. And when I get a really good opportunity, I left for join final league.”   Classic League admin CelticLegend however had his own version of events.   “To be fair most did not like HakanCaglak when he turned Gökturk Empire into a bunch of coffin dodgers, the previous manager had built one of the best conveyor belt sides the Classic League had seen at the time. He came in and did what he did but he did claim he would rebuild the team. Next thing you know he's decided to abandon the wrecking ship. I actually got on with Hakan he was a decent enough guy although he appeared to take it pretty badly when yours truly beat his side in the league."   "His last Classic League match was a loss against my Mighty Maggots and he had hit the forums with one of those popular "how did I lose this match" threads. Now I doubt he left because I beat him with what he considered a bad beat, and more likely a new side filled with quality players and buckets and buckets of econs. I'm only disappointed because he decided to leave after saying he would stick around to put things right with Gökturk Empire. Instead he left them to rot and lied about rebuilding the team. It's not the first time nor the last time someone has left a team in ruins by going the all old route. What Hakan did was annoying but it was part of the game back then.”     9 – Late goal bonanza turns group on its head! – XCL XXV Group G Matchday Six     Sometimes the greatest moments happen in the most unusual place and in Season 25 and in Group G, that was where the action lay. The four teams were not household names; going into the final matchday, 7Eleven FC of the Classic League were ahead of Skeninge IK of the Master League on goal difference, Racing Forstäppan of the Xtreme League were two points back but with a superior goal difference to Skeninge whilst Ursvik IK of the Xpert League were three points behind the top two needing to win by at least three goals to go through – it was safe to say the odds were against them.   With goals a requirement, Ursvik went with a 433 formation and took the lead just seven minutes in, the only goal in a first half full of chances. Meanwhile in the other game, Racing went ahead through Roy Lampard to move Racing to the top of the group! Four minutes into the second half, 7Eleven leaked their second goal to Ursvik, Theodore Myall with the goal, but in an instant Ursvik’s miracle hopes looked tattered when Warren Spheeris’ freekick whistled past Reciu into the top corner of the goal. On sixty minutes though Allan Karlgren made it 3-1 with a headed goal from a corner! This was the table as things stood with ten minutes left…   1st - Racing Forstäppan (1-0 up vs Skeninge) 2nd – 7Eleven FC (1-3 down vs Ursvik) 3rd – Ursvik IK (3-1 up vs 7Eleven) 4th – Skeninge IK (0-1 down vs Racing)   It was so tightly poised that just one goal could change everything… and so it proved! In the 83rd minute of their game against Racing, Skeninge’s Igor Gorito leapt onto a bobbling ball in the Racing penalty area and unleashed a fearsome drive that the ‘keeper could barely touch, the ball fell crisply into the bottom corner; Skeninge were level! The goal meant Skeninge climbed from 4th to 1st and sent Racing skimming down from 1st to 4th! Surely that was it…? But no there was more! Ursvik were on their last limbs but somehow managed to fashion one more chance and Cha Hubson managed to wriggle into half a yard of space to see off his marker and bury his effort into the bottom left hand corner to send Ursvik through to the next round in place of a shell-shocked 7Eleven! These were the final standings…   1st – Skeninge IK (Drew 1-1 vs Racing) 2nd – Ursvik IK (Beat 7Eleven 4-1) 3rd – 7Eleven FC (Lost to 7Eleven 4-1) 4th Racing Forstäppan (Drew 1-1 vs Skeninge)   So not the most fashionable of teams but a perfect demonstration on why never to give up in the XCL until the very last whistle. Both Skeninge and Ursvik were knocked out in the 2nd round, albeit to XCL legends FC Ballbreakers and eventual winners, Smögens IF respectively (two sides that will become more familiar as this article goes on…) but the events of the group phase and the manner from which they qualified captured XCL hearts and made them legends without even needing to play another XCL tie.     8 – When Nobego got franzie’d! – XCL XVII Quarter Finals     Nobego will rightly go down as one of, if not the greatest manager to ever play the game, most managers would not be fit to even lace his boots and when I say most managers, I am talking about a lot of very reputable ones at that. But even the best managers have their off days and on the 22nd of October 2008, Nobego’s worst ever day on xpert was to unfold in front of his very eyes.   Drawn against competition heavyweights and outright favourites in FC Ballbreakers, few gave Nobego’s Perishers much of a chance but all those critics were dumbstruck by the sheer strength of the Perishers who tore the Ballbreakers to shreds in the first leg of their quarter final. Jimmy Gessle starred with two goals as The Perishers punished Ballbreakers’ profligacy to go to the Ballbreakers Arena with a 3-0 advantage. What could possibly go wrong?   Just a week later, eleven buoyant green and white shirted players bounded out onto the field of play and just 45 minutes later, those same eleven cheerful bunny-like faces trudged off in misery and self-loathing. If it was a musical number it would be operatic of the Andrew Lloyd Webber variety; if it were scripted it would be destined for Hollywood but the truth is no-one will quite know how the events of the 22nd of October 2008 played out the way they did. 38 minutes into the tie things were looking good; The Perishers had maintained their three goal first leg advantage and many of their visiting supporters were already on TripAdvisor looking for hotels for their semi-final away trip.   But then in five very strange minutes, all hell broke loose! First Emile Pidgley broke away to put the Ballbreakers ahead on the night, then Rowan Hoyle shot home to make it 2-3 on aggregate and, with The Perishers now reeling on the lowest fulcrum of confidence, Anthony Stafford scored to turn the tie on its head! 3-3 on aggregate and the Ballbreakers did not stop there! Into the second half, Emile Pidgley got his second of the game to edge the Ballbreakers ahead in the tie before Kearney McKechnie’s header surmised a remarkable match of football at the Ballbreakers Arena. Not even Frank Einstein’s late red card could upset the mood of the Ballbreakers faithful! It really was a performance for the ages.   Not before nor hence has a side managed to overturn a three goal deficit from the first leg in the knockout stages of the XCL so for the Ballbreakers to inflict it on one of the website’s finest ever managers was one sterling achievement and one of the great XCL performances. That is why it’s number eight on the list.     7 – The XCL naughty boys     The XCL is xpert’s most treasured goblet. Its golden complexion is craved by every manager on the land, the chance to lift the beauty has been the moment sought after by everyone; unfortunately this has brought a very dark art to the clean game of football management. Cheating.   Because for some users, the XCL is a drug – a fix to inspire some managers to greatness and some to erm, well rock bottom. Cheating has of course been rife throughout xpert eleven in various forms over the past, a notion those involved with “URL gate” know only too well but putting exploited loopholes to one side, dummy accounts and inflated market prices created two of the most high profile cheating cases the game has ever seen.   The first came shortly after the 20th XCL Final between Gildar’s Adrenochrome and Furad’s Kurdiska, a match which could hardly have pitted two more contrasting managers against each other. Gildar was the softly spoken Swede with a passion for statistics, for self-improvement, for number crunching – someone who was mastering the art of building a team the clean way. His counterpart was not that, Furad was more outspoken, he was more a manager of tactical greatness than team building brilliance and because his teambuilding skills were not quite at Gildar’s level, he resorted to the dark arts of cheating. Initially he got away with it and reached said XCL Final, only to see his side neufed out by Adrenochrome on penalties. However not too long after the Final, irregularities were found by the Crew, Furad was summoned to the xpert courts where he was found guilty of cheating – but received a tame “slap on the wrist” punishment; a fine and several assets stripped but crucially he was allowed to keep his team.   Fast-forward a year and back we were again, this time in the League of Champs where newly crowned champions Gerrard FC were asked to hand in their season’s accounts to the supreme xpert courts to be scrutinised. Gerrard FC were just about to participate in a key second leg of a second round XCL clash against GRASSBANDITS’ Icarus Flight and so it was vitally important that irregularities were dealt with swiftly. It did not take long. Manager HarryKewell was called in to the chambers and after further scrutiny; it was found that he was guilty of “duping” with other accounts. The prosecution pushed for a harsher sentence to the one handed out to Furad – and supreme judge iwe went in hard! HarryKewell and his duplicate accounts were banned, IFK Juve were handed the League of Champs title in place of Gerrard FC and Icarus Flight became the first and only team to receive a walkover in the XCL.   In fact Sheep, manager of IFK Juve, exclusively revealed to the Xpert Daily that it was his suspicions that may have led to Gerrard’s banning.   “I got that message [about Gerrard’s cheating] right away.”   “I must say that I think that I were the one who find it out. I saw their transfers and discussed it with another player and I think he send it to X11.”   “We play this for fun and cheating has no place here.”   In a media interview with XD reporter Rbjayb prior to his League of Champs ‘title’, HarryKewell quipped with this comment: “do whatever you have to do” when asked what advice he would give to newer users. Who would’ve thought this comment would backfire so achingly? There was a third case of high profile cheating, would you believe? And that will be explored a little later on…   The ramifications for the game were big, the crew brought in security checks to the player market to ensure this method of cheating could not reoccur so now that suspicious transfers are now investigated before going through. As glorious as the XCL is, fast-tracking your way to glory is a no no as these managers found to their cost and that is why this makes number 7 on the list.     6 – Red Devil quash Luton to begin unbelievable run! – XCL XXVIII Group E Matchday Six     “Look, if you had one shot, or one opportunity, to seize everything you ever wanted. One moment, would you capture it or just let it slip?” – the immortal words American rapper Eminem and completely relevant to Red Devil’s incredible tournament in the 28th edition of the tournament.   Going into matchday six of the group phase, Red Devil lay second in the group ahead of The Legacy of Darren on goals scored but both sides were three points adrift of Luton who were top of the group and ahead of both teams incrementally by a goal difference of two, too. However Main-Event’s The Legacy of Darren were in action against bottom and pointless side Soldiers of Sodor and therefore the match between Red Devil and Luton seemed as though it would be crucial. And it would be too – The Legacy of Darren won 4-0 ensuring their qualification no matter what happened, but who would join them?   Red Devil unmistakably needed to win the game – a draw was not helpful enough for them but they seemed distinctly average on a day where Luton were controlling things, knowing that their destiny not only as qualifiers but as group-winners would be satisfied by avoiding defeat against the Final League side. A tame match was withering towards an inevitable conclusion, Red Devil fans had even begun leaving the stadium early having been dismayed by their team’s lack of concerted effort. Luton were sailing through… In the 88th minute Red Devil won a corner. A fairly innocuous cross had been blocked but it left Red Devil with a chance to create something and create they did! Suca Tamas’ ball in was perfect for Dylan Clifford who beat Arnelius’ reach with a downward header that was too good for the man on the line! The lead was Red Devil’s, the second round was Red Devil’s and it was Luton, no less, who suffered the ignominious fall from grace to go from 1st to 3rd and bow out of the tournament on goals scored.   The tournament didn’t stop there for Red Devil though! A second round meeting against Xpert International monsters, Tegnérlunden, would have been a mountain to climb for most sides. Not Red Devil. Martín Solari’s long range effort set up the unlikeliest of victories before Red Devil went back to Auguststadion… and defeated Tegnérlunden 1-0 away too! 2-0 on aggregate against the mighty Tegnérlunden? Unheard of. The quarter finals pitted Red Devil against reigning champions Realgalacticos, surely the dream was over now? Again it was another long range Solari goal that proved enough in the first leg and then in the second it was Payton Lansbury whose goal cancelled out both of Realgalacticos’ strikes to ensure that though Red Devil lost 2-1 on the night, they went through on away goals! LISBOA were the semi-final opponents and they were also sent packing, 2-1 on aggregate to earn Red Devil a final place. Unfortunately the fairytale ended there, Red Devil were beaten in the final in a story you will hear about a little later on but scarcely has this competition seen a side upset the odds week in, week out to seal the most unlikely of Final berths.   And had it not been for Dylan Clifford’s 88th minute goal against Luton, this section of history would never have taken place. Great things can begin at vital moments; the Red Devil story is testament to that!     5 – Whitsunday rob Posener’s thunder – XCL XXXI Final     The Artur Posener story has been done to death, you cannot be on xpert eleven and not know who Posener is even post-retirement, never has a virtual player received so much attention and why not? He was the best player to have ever graced the Official Leagues. For a while though, it seemed his outstanding talent would go unfulfilled. Until Vasastan came along.   Vasastan were a side making their way in the Xpert International but without a big name player to really drive them towards the tour de force that was trophies. However when Posener became available, Vasastan wasted little time shelling out the econs to secure his services. Success quickly followed. Vasastan raced through the divisions, got into the XCL in no time and in their first XCL season reached the Final! Artur Posener was the driving force and his elusive place in the Hall of Fame was barred by just one obstacle, KBM Whitsunday.   KBM Whitsunday were themselves in their first XCL season and were being overseen by a manager that had put together a team with bags of potential, passion and pizzazz on their way up the Super League charts.   Whitsunday went into the Final as the slightly stronger outfit but, Vasastan had Posener and in such a close match-up you would expect the big players to come out and make a difference. It was not happening for Vasastan in the first half of their match against Whitsunday who went ahead through a well-constructed freekick between Gamiz and Roc Colsa. Six minutes into the second half though Svante Leander powered home a header from a corner to level the scores.   The wait for a winner went on, the clocks dwindled and Extra Time looked a certainty. But in added on time, Gamiz’s flick on found Carlos Targino whose powerful header evaded the hands of Hakan to earn Whitsunday their first XCL title, denying Vasastan – and Posener – their chance.   And it was to be Posener’s only chance. Vasastan never managed to reach the Final again during his tenure at the club and the defender bowed out with just an XCL Final to his name. For KBM Whitsunday though it was the start of the club’s best period of operation. They would win the next two Finals becoming the first and – so far – only club to win a hattrick of consecutive XCL titles, an achievement which marks ShadowsDT as one of the greatest; if not, the greatest to have ever played the game.     4 – The Swedish Delight – XCL IV Final     There was once a time on Xperteleven when the Swedes used to domina… oh they still do! Well there was once a time when the Swedes used to dominate using one formation that was so effective that it had its own phrase coined, the “Swedish delight”. And wouldn’t you know it that Nobego had a big part to play in its success and popular implementation in the game.   His Bolltrolleri BK side had reached the final of the XCL and were aiming to earn the Xpert International’s first slice of XCL glory against Final League side, FC Maurerna. This ‘tie’ took place when XCL finals were contested over two legs and after Maurerna held Bolltrolleri 1-1 away from home, the purists were favouring Maurerna once the Final League side took the game back home. Somehow, something had to give if Bolltrolleri were to become XCL champions – and Nobego took his greatest strategy gamble yet.   The second leg saw Maurerna again emerge in their traditional 451 formation but Bolltrolleri trotted out with a 352 setup, Nobego reverting from type from his traditional wall of four defenders – but at what cost? As it turned out, it was to no cost. Maurerna subjugated the first half but failed to make an indent on the Bolltrolleri goal and just two minutes after the break, Albert Oskarsson exploited Maurerna’s lack of a cutting edge to nudge Bolltrolleri ahead. Suddenly the onus was on Maurerna but their possession-happy 451 formation was being oppressed by a poor rate of conversion and in the final minute of injury time after Maurerna goalkeeper, Oscarsson, had bombed forward for a corner; Bolltrolleri broke, Forsell pinged the ball forward and Bert-Ola Brorsson flashed past everybody at speed to meet the ball and turn it into the empty net to earn Bolltrolleri their first XCL triumph!   It was a significant moment in XCL history; the 352 formation had been born, to be drafted onto a Swedish manager’s tactics setup page for years to come and to be used incessantly by Swedes throughout the game. The formation was not of course the only Swedish delight to emerge that day; it was Nobego’s first XCL title after three Xpertsvenskan trophies. He would go on to win 8 more league titles, 5 cup titles and 2 further XCL titles before stepping down as manager with 19 trophies to his name – a record which still stands today meaning Nobego, just as much as ShadowsDT, is amongst the game’s elite. But he doesn’t quite get into the top three for this particular article…     3 – A Krazy run – XCL XVIII     Third on the list isn’t really one moment per se, but a succession of truly thrilling moments to produce one of THE great XCL runs of all time. Not only that, but it was the first time that Sweden’s monopolisation of the competition was truly threatened.   Way back when in the XCL you could not move down the XCL aisles without running into IKEA furnishings or Swedish meatballs. One of the upcoming Swedish teams in the game was Gardenia who were drawn in Group F of the eighteenth XCL alongside Ibis Constanta, Laosovi Tigrovi and West Ham Boys – as you may have guessed, this particular moment has little to do with Gardenia. West Ham Boys had been the pick of the Golden League for some time; Krazy_Galah’s side had managed to go through a Division 1 season amassing the maximum 42 points and had already won two league and two cup titles by the time they entered the eighteenth XCL.   In a group phase which featured many bore draws and wins, West Ham Boys went into the second round as group runners up just behind Gardenia having amassed 11 points, their only defeat coming when qualification to the last sixteen was confirmed and a date against Jokkmokk Vårdcentral was finalised. And this was where it got interesting.   The Think Tank statistics generated West Ham Boys as the weakest side still in the competition at the knockout phase and the world and its dog thought they were on for a landslide defeat away at Söderkvist’s oldies. Wrong. A Stanley Svedberg inspired performance led West Ham Boys to a ‘krazy’ 1-2 away win and Jonathan Grieves’ lone goal in the second leg sent the WHB fans into raptures and a quarter final against Amcik FC – 5-3 aggregate destroyers of Gardenia. West Ham Boys went into the first leg away at Amcik with confidence; but returned to England in dismay after a disappointing 2-0 defeat with the rarely used 532 formation. The defeat was so bad that after the match, Krazy_galah told the awaiting media that he would step down as WHB boss after the inevitable second leg knockout. Enter miracle number two.    Amcik, inexplicably, decided to bench several highly skilled players and field a side half crammed with fringe players including a 21 year old in goal – in an XCL semi-final?! The underestimation cost them. Despite a drab first half, WHB sliced through Amcik like a knife through butter in the second with Stamp and Svedberg eliminating the first leg advantage; both would score one more goal each along with Simon Tomlinson to overturn the first leg deficit to create a 5-2 aggregate win and reach the semi-finals for a date with teenager Kcnr1 and his team, The Dø, surprise conquerors of franzie’s Ballbreakers!   Kcnr1 had spent much of the competition as the Global #1. Number one! But he couldn’t channel any of that greatness into getting his team to score at home in the first leg, West Ham Boys successfully held them to a 0-0 draw; surely West Ham Boys could not do it again? Well they did just that, Jonathon Grieves grabbed the first goal in the opening five minutes, Toscano did equalise for The Dø temporarily putting Kcnr1’s team on course for the final but incredibly midway through the second half Simon Tomlinson lobbed The Dø’s goalkeeper to make it 2-1 to West Ham Boys and, despite them being the weakest side in the round for each round of the knockout phase, West Ham Boys were in the final!   Alas that is where the fairytale ended. Nobego’s Perishers proved too much in the final; a 2-1 victory for The Perishers which proved to be Nobego’s last ever trophy with the side. But the plaudits of the competition were reserved for Krazy_galah whose side had no right to be in the quarter-finals yet made it all the way to the Xpert Arena defying every odd and law to get there exhuming in character, strength and managerial guile in lavishness. A worthy number three on the list – so which two moments are ‘better’?     2 – From Xpert Pub League to Xpert Champions League – XCL XXV Semi-Finals     In season 24 Smögens IF were an unstoppable force, seeing off all that barred the way and being spearheaded by the sensational Théodore Toyes. By season 25 however, Smögens’ considerable advantage was negated somewhat with Toyes’ retirement and for some reason all their luck seemed to desert them in one manic three month period; leading to one of the great XCL moments.   SambaSven had long been described as the average tactician who could build monster sides, an accusation levelled with most Xpert International winners in that era and it was assumed that he would never win a title. Eventually after a few failed attempts, Smögens did win the title but that was put down to weak opposition with Ballbreakers, Perishers, Olympique Baguette, Hammarslag and co reaching their decline. “They definitely won’t win it twice” admonished the cynical xpert public.    Somehow Smögens had made it all the way to the semi-finals! A relatively easy group phase was followed up by a second round meet against Ursvik IK (for more, see number 9) where a pair of 1-0 wins earned Smögens a place in the quarter finals. Ibiza CF were their quarter finals opponents but were distinctly poor against a flourishing Smögens side that sneaked an excellent 1-0 win in the first leg before defending their way to a semi-final place which would take place against Gazfraz’s Eagle Army FC.   Eagle Army FC were one of the best teams in the game, as evidenced by their semi-final place, and in Gazfraz they had one of England’s brightest up and coming managers. They had an incisive cutting edge to their play too and took advantage of an injury hit Smögens to go in front in the first leg; Roger Hovenäs with the perfectly flighted freekick. Smögens, without Tommy Damberg and Steve Searle, had their chances but could not make their mark and Eagle Army FC not only won, but did so without conceding an away goal.   Smögens were even more depleted in the second leg: Sanroman joined Searle on the sidelines, their second defensive injury, and though Damberg returned to the starting lineup he was still at what SambaSven described before kickoff as “50% fit”. Amin Alyasi, Smögens’ all-rounder, went at the back to plug the gaps whilst teenager Ene Cupsa joined Bengt Hultén in attack as Smögens went with a 442 formation against the defensively operating EAFC whom had adopted a 532 approach. And you thought that was bad? Just twelve minutes into the second leg, Wilbur Hyde collided with Smögens goalkeeper Cletus Olagoke and knocked him straight out! SambaSven looked to the heavens on the sidelines, before kickoff Smögens were in contention for a double treble but now those dreams were in ruins. Despite almost ten minutes of physio attention, Olagoke could not continue. So who would come off the bench?   None other than 25 year old legend, Pehr Haldarsson! No, really. Pehr Haldarsson was a hero; not the cape-wearing, super-strength sort… Pehr was more of the dopey, kicking the dirt, flappy hand kind. “Not even good enough to make our local pub side” remarked bewildered spectators but it really did happen, Pehr Haldarsson had gone from playing in the Xpert Pub League to the Xpert Champions League and all Smögens hopes rested on the goalkeeper that had three mighty skill bars – FIFTEEN less than Olagoke. Surely all EAFC needed to do was have a successful effort on goal? If only it was that easy.   Smögens now had a back five containing a goalkeeper not good enough for Division 8 and a midfielder playing in defence, thus played with extreme caution. And it worked! Eagle Army were struggling to get out their own half and on 37 minutes, Smögens won a freekick. Up stepped Lester Whitmore to score and level the aggregate score. Eagle Army posed no threat whatsoever, it was such a tame showing from the side that thought they had it won; SambaSven was jigging up and down on his seat, from disbelief he was now full of belief and so were the Smögens fans! The stadium was rocking! At the end of normal time it was still 1-0 meaning an extra thirty minutes had to be played with Haldarsson having managed to come off his line to scoop up any danger and not concede a goal in 78 minutes. Penalties would surely favour EAFC with a much more experienced goalkeeper so Smögens had thirty minutes to score. They wasted fifteen of them and as Extra Time went on, the home fans became more and more resigned to a penalty shootout and eventual defeat. EAFC grew in confidence. But on 113 minutes the final phenomenon occurred when Smögens won a freekick just outside the EAFC box and Whitmore, with another trademark swing of his left peg, curled the ball into the top right corner of the goal to complete a sensational, marvellous, fabulous 2-0 second leg victory to progress 2-1 on aggregate.   No-one knew how or why at full time they had managed to do it. Haldarsson; ridiculed before his appearance, oversaw over 100 minutes of action without conceding and fully merited whichever coloured medal came his way after the final. It turned out to be gold. Buoyed by such a miraculous performance, Smögens rolled past Paselu.’s Guardian Angels in the final, despite being without Sanroman and despite Olagoke carrying a slight knock from the semi, by a 2-0 margin – Lester Whitmore grabbing both goals to confirm his place amongst the game’s very best. Smögens rejoiced, their fans delighted, SambaSven was vindicated and commended for his tactical nous. Smögens’ success goes to prove that every player in the squad has a role to play in successes; even ones long discarded as useless.      1 – Tactical Perfection – XCL XXVIII Semi-Finals     Season 28 of the Xpert Champions League can rightly be described as the “season of the underdog” given the amount of quality teams knocked out early on, though admittedly a lot of those quality sides were knocked out by other quality sides. The group phase accounted for the loss of Braila, Luton and Cormorans – the latter of whom were drawn in the regrettable group of death. Tegnérlunden’s tournament was ended by Red Devil (see number 6) whilst GRASSBANDITS’ internet troubles ensured an early end to his tournament and Imperium Sine Fine’s involvement. The two finalists of the competition’s previous season went in the quarter finals with Red Devil taking care of champions Realgalacticos and Stiinta U Craiova crushing Högsbo United which provided an amazing semi-final lineup pitting LISBOA against Red Devil in one semi-final and in the other; the competition’s new overwhelming favourites Stiinta U Craiova, against plucky Aussie, Sommers and his South Hooligans team.   Stiinta U Craiova were the best team left in it by far and Sommers said as much to me as I can bring you exclusively from the Xpert Daily interview parlour: “Truth is, even once I got into the semi-finals against Stiinta, no one thought I was any chance. By then I figured I was a 1 in 4 chance, so even though I was weaker on paper, why not give it a crack? Honestly didn't think I could really win it”. It was not hard to see why, Stiinta had torn Högsbo apart in the quarter-final; 5-1 in the first leg and 8-4 on aggregate and the way they menaced at South Hooligans in the first leg suggested a repeat performance was on the horizon. Pontus Hellman smacked the ball home from range but the match promised more goals, particularly for those wearing Stiinta blue, and that was what was delivered. South Hooligans had gone with a 532 formation and initially got back on terms when Zidane was fouled and Oates picked up the pieces from the spot; kick-starting a passage of play where Duncombe gave Stiinta the lead again before Sapiano – the man Sommers would happily take and put in his current South Hooligans team given the chance in front of any other – immediately responded with the equaliser. Stiinta were dominant, it was difficult to see how South Hooligans had managed to get on terms. A deluge of chances were spurned by Stiinta before Andy Smallwood finally justified Stiinta’s match control from the penalty spot but Stiinta knew they could, and should, have put the tie to bed in the first leg. And that was their first critical mistake.   In the build up to the second leg Sommers received prodigious support from the xpert community regarding his second leg chances but the fact was, though his South Hooligans now had home advantage, they were playing a much stronger team and had an aggregate disadvantage.   “They [the away goals] were huge. It's a long time ago now, but I remember the build up to this clash like it was yesterday. Fcbprofetu was the number 1 ranked manager in the world at the time, and he (by far) had the strongest team on paper. And to add to it, fair to say he came across as a very arrogant bloke. Even the Romanian community, one that was well-known for always sticking together and supporting each other strongly, was quite split in their feelings towards him (I remember getting messages from Romanian managers telling me to kick his a*!# because they couldn't stand the way he made others look!). But at the time, the way it was perceived was that it was his XCL title and that was it - the other three of us in the semis were just making up the numbers and wasting our time." "So yeah, I think all of that got into his head a little bit. He seemed to assume it would all just 'happen' for him, like no one else had the right to even challenge him. He played 'very offensive' in the first leg, and it backfired. It left him exposed at the back and I was lucky enough to snag a couple of away goals. But even after that result, still not many rated my chances in the return leg at home...”   It would take a superhuman effort from South Hooligans, a particularly poor performance from Stiinta U Craiova or a tactical masterclass from Sommers to overturn the deficit – and a combination of all three was what Sommers was blessed with.   Both sides lined up with a 352 formation but it was clear from the outset which side was more up for it; more cohesive, a team rather than a team of individuals. In the first half hour of the game South Hooligans perfectly exploited Stiinta’s weaknesses to race into a two goal lead: strike-partners, Zidane and Bentley bagging the goals. From then on it was a case of protecting what they had an not getting over-adventurous. Stiinta had plenty of quality and were starting many passing moves but their aim of strong attacking play out wide was being rebuffed by South Hooligans’ tricky wingbacks, their playmaker was marked and they struggled to get out their own half! South Hooligans were brilliant, indisputably, but were organised by a man that had achieved tactical perfection. South Hooligans did not lapse once, their full concentration aiding them to not even concede a chance and by the final whistle their players sunk to their knees at the conclusion of one of the most unreal XCL matches. They had done the impossible against a team that looked destined for the Xpert Champions League. Amazing. The supporters wept tears of joy in the grandstands, grown men crying; it was the epitome of the XCL – the plucky underdogs seeing off the big favourites at such a crowd-pleasing venue to book a place in the final. Again I spoke with Sommers as we reminisced about the great day…   “I nailed every aspect of that game tactically. He was still a good 3-4 bars stronger in all players in all positions, but I picked his formation, I picked where he would attack, and I got his playmaker. He didn't get any 'counter' tactics against me right at all, so I was attacking in weaker areas and bossed the game. I changed things up from my previous matches to be more unpredictable and he clearly didn't expect it. It all worked out a treat. The tactics the following week against Red Devil were really strong too; as were the Round of 16 and Quarter Finals... things just happened to 'click' over that final six weeks or so of the competition and I proved to a lot of people that a 'weaker' side on paper can do the damage if it's managed well - but yes, that home leg against the-then number 1 manager in the world is the stand out.”   South Hooligans did not disappoint in the final either against a Red Devil side that had a habit of shocking the world when it came to the XCL. Ferrarese did cancel out Zidane’s early opener but Roque Recoba’s headed goal sealed victory for South Hooligans and a fully merited place in the Hall of Fame.   “Once I had knocked Stiinta out, the pressure moved on to my club and most managers jumped on-board expecting me to win. To be honest, I sort of expected to win too, as I was a little bit stronger than Red Devil in most areas of the park. I knew if I got my tactics right, I should be okay... but then, you still never know in a one-off match do you? I would have been shattered to lose it, but thankfully things went my way and I was very proud to be the first Aussie to bring the XCL title down under!”   You thought that was it didn’t you? Well no, the controversy did not stop there! Remember the third XCL naughty boy I mentioned briefly at number 7? Well a few months after the dust had settled and South Hooligans were confirmed champions, it transpired that Fcbprofetu, the global number one, had been found guilty of cheating! His Stiinta side were allowed to remain, under new manager Cgabi, but Fcbprofetu was banished from the ‘site for foul play having created a team which did not comply with official rules.   So I asked Sommers about this. It could be said that his team prevented xperteleven’s greatest ever injustice. Did he agree?   “I like to think that way! ;) It did mean a lot more to me once all of that went down, when all of his cheating was exposed. It would have made a huge story even bigger; ‘XCL winner revealed as massive cheat’ - but I'm happy to say I played a part in preventing that from happening!”    A truly remarkable story had its fitting and rightful ending. The cheat was exposed for dishonesty; two amazing giant killers played out a magnificent final and it was good guy Sommers that prevailed.
