Men against boys
Viking North Utsire's anticipated downward spiral in the Ultimate League top flight continued with a 2-0 away loss at Bucksgrove United on Monday. Bucksgrove, league champions three seasons ago, are one of the über-teams whose squad strength is so far in advance of the Utsirans' it makes a mockery of the notion that they are technically fellow members of the elite -- the difference in quality is approximately the same as between Viking and a Division 4 team. Duly enough, United scored twice inside the opening half-hour from their only two shots of the game, then declared.
That leaves VNU still 6th and only one goal below the relegation line on GD, yet self-evidently with a mountain to climb. Next up comes what is effectively already a proverbial 'six-pointer', at home against fellow promoted outfit Lylat Wanderers who sit a single point below them in 7th.
There was at least a good result, just about, on Friday. The 3rd round of the UL Cup brought the expected sharp uptick in difficulty of opponent, with Valencia CF providing a stern test with a solid squad and a defensive mindset that proved difficult to break. Anders Bjørgen eventually powered home Viking's sole opportunity on 68 minutes, but there is still a job to do in the return leg back at Dogger Bank a week hence.
