Division 1b
Manager: Gmswjambo

Veneer

Gmswjambo's PA, Mrs Trellis of North Wales, has recently been bargain hunting around some antique shops. She shared her experience with her good friend Agnes, their discussion going something like this:

Trellis: I tell you, dear, there are some wonderful objects to be had.
Agnes: I'm sure. What did you get then? Surely not some more copper crap for that kitchen of yours!
Trellis: I don't know what you mean, those pots and pans are wonderfully decorative and probably worth a fair whack these days.
Agnes: If you say so.
Trellis: I do. But to return to your question, I found a lovely 18th-century coffee table.
Agnes: Ooh, I can't wait to see it, you'll need to have me over for tea sometime soon.
Trellis: Absolutely. You're going to love it; apparently it's a genuine Vincent Van Gogh.
Agnes: A Van Gogh coffee table? I didn't know he did furniture as well... How do you know it's one of his?
Trellis: It's got a bit of veneer missing.

As for CA Lisieux P.A., the play-off ended up being a massive disappointment. To be fair, the writing was on the wall after defeat in the final league game of the season, Bajen Avalanche coming to ours and earning a 1-2 win. Fortunately for us, Doktiga Grabbar couldn't capitalise, going down to Rastafari IS by the same scoreline.

That meant Gmswjambo's side finished second by a point from the Rastas and would face Shark Attack for a place in the top-flight. The gaffer set up with a back 5, anticipating either a two or three-pronged offense. He plumped defend against a 3-5-2, but had suspected 3-4-3 or 4-3-3 as other possibilities. In the end, it was the latter, but as the side's shook hands before kick-off, Jambo quite fancied his chances. Yes, young keepers do leave one vulnerable, but with a top-notch defence to protect him, surely they'd keep the Sharks at bay for large stretches? Also, by playing a direct style while they protected the flanks, Costinha and crew would surely find some openings to threaten Huntley's goal?

Nope. Just three minutes in and  Wolff was beaten, stranded off his line and lobbed by Tindle. Nevermind, thought Jambo, and as the first 45 ticked on, it'd only be a matter of time before our dominance in possession paid off.

But half-time came and went with only a single effort on goal. They hit the post. And as the final 15 minutes approached, Huntley's gloves were serving only one purpose - keeping the keeper's hands warm. Then, disaster. A free-kick from just outside the box. Hagståhl beat the wall and beat the goalie, 2-0. Lisieux attacked from the restart, but lost the ball and the Sharks countered. Rocha found space out wide and swung in an inviting ball that Tindle guided past Wolff for 3-0. No way back now.

Just to rub it in, three minutes later Combe thought he'd pulled one back only for a doubtful offside call ruled it out. Another season in Division 1 will have to do, with Jambo mulling over whether it may be time to cash in on an asset in the off-season to fund the next quality youth.
