Balancing act

"A Haas hat trick really calms the nerves," purrs Matchstick Men manager Tony Brazil, "and especially so as his achievement came during a sticky patch of our friendly against Shark Attack, when it looked like our opponents had fought their way back into the match.

"Haas pulled us away from embarrassment, taking the score to three-two then four-two before finally Redde made it five-two in the closing stages. What a mad match for a friendly," Brazil laughs, "it was more like a frenzied cup final. Ouch, don't talk about cup finals."

Brazil slumps, remembering Matchstick's cup final loss last season meaning they are out of the Champions League after being in the previous two tournaments. He snaps out of it, "we've had some great experiences and the players are improving, even the thirty-two and thirty-three year olds are increasing their skill levels.

"It's not over yet. Matchsticks are still competitive but it's going to be a balancing act with the youngsters in the next few seasons. If we make a mess of it and fall off the tight rope then," Brazil pulls on a smile, "we'll be back in in another twenty seasons."
