UU Accies returned to winning ways with a comprehensive 4 – 0 win over Los Renegados at the Sink yesterday. It was a performance that was reminiscent of their weekly D6 performances last season and had KElliott beaming at his players as they left the pitch to cheers ringing in their ears.
“That’s how we can play,” the manager crowed, “That’s how we played every week last season and it’s good to see we can still perform like that in a higher Division.”
KElliott delighted the Accies fans by applauding players and fans alike at the final whistle but is it too late for the Accies to save their season?
From the first whistle the Accies took the game to the visitors with some free-flowing football that belied their lowly league position. Dominating throughout the 90, it wasn’t long before the chances started being converted and Bruce Pattis duly obliged with the first on 17 minutes with a powerful, curling freekick. Two minutes later and Gabriel Vasquez doubled the lead with a precise shot from 10 yards, back across the face of goal and into the far corner. Young Japanese striking sensation, Hisao Okazaki, made it 3 – 0 four minutes before the break with a near-post bullet header from a Gamme corner.
The Accies got back to business in the second half but had to wait until the 61st minute before knocking in the fourth. Riccardo Lanna, on as a second half substitute for Gabriel Vasquez, needed only one touch to control a quick pass from Gustavo Maurinho and fired the ball past Castro from 15 yards out. It was a neat, crisp finish to round off a superb display by the home team.
UU Accies limited Los Renegados to a single effort on goal in the first half thanks to Captain marvel, Dragan Andic, putting the shackles on Damian Spedding. The big defender kept the prolific striker in his back pocket throughout the game.
“That was it really,” KElliott admitted afterwards. “We went back to basics for this match, deciding to put more focus on what we can do, our strengths, and not worry so much about the opposition. But Damian is top scorer this season and we knew we had to stop him: if you do that you’re in with a shout.
“I really felt for Amadeupname after Adão Carrasco got injured on 91 minutes. The young defender played really well and he’ll miss their next match against Boston City. That’s the result I’ll be looking for after our game against UM AFC.
“Los Renegados and Boston both have 17 points while us and UM have 14. So now the pressure is really on to avoid the drop. We accept we’re not the strongest team, but then neither is Balley Cashtal and look where they’re sitting! Dynamodave has had a fantastic season and with the last three games he has he can only throw it away now. But, knowing Howesdog, Ryans Rangers will be pushing him all the way.
“And Gazzaboy isn’t safe yet, either. TRA are only a point ahead of Boston, on 18 points in third place. It’s turned into a cracking last hattrick of matches, a real pressure-cooker to close the season off.
“One thing’s for sure: KElliott and UU Accies won’t buckle, we don’t do pressure. It’s one game at a time and win, lose or draw, we’ll give our all and end the season on a high. It’s the least our fans deserve.”
