Babs Clinch 92nd Minute Title |
Babswintodaymaybe, on the final day, jump from 4th to 1st place to complete the most dramatic and unlikely of titles, a title still up for grabs to any one of 6 teams in the tightest division in memory
An incredible string of results somehow made it possible for Babs to not only avoid the still very much possible relegation but to also leapfrog 3 teams to be crowned champions.
The Mighty Mustangs and the new manager at the helm of the now named Bananas FF turned the division on its head as they raced into early leads against the start of the day's top 2 teams affording both us and BeatMap hope of glory. We finally found the net at the end of the first half from the spot after a very nervous start and the excitement around the ground began to be felt as it became clear that at that point we were top of the league, and after soaking up yet more pressure we finally earnt ourselves a cushion in the 52nd minute thanks to veteran striker and local academy graduate turned legend Brosnans shot from close range.
The minutes ticked past very slowly and the tension amoungst the crowd was keenly felt and in the 67th minute the news we dreaded filtered in and we were now trailing Beatmap on goal difference. The way things stood we needed to find another 2 goals without reply. Then, with 79 minutes played and with no further developments elsewhere, Tony Idberg headed home a cross from his young strike partner Ramirez that lifted the roof off the Gammon Factory stadium and 10 minutes remained to try and find another..
Minute after minute ticked by but nothing, it was as if both teams had froze and it looked as if that was that. Yet Idberg kept on trying to find space and in the 92nd minute finally found some and headed home to put us even on goals difference with Beatmap F.C on +17 and win the league on goals scored. Tony Idberg has had a frustrating season with injuries but these 2 goals have completely turned both his and our season around, they were also the goals that win him the divisions golden boot award.
The dizzy heights of the 3rd division awaits, the highest we have climbed, and although they say a league table doesn't lie, it definatly doesn't show a team a cut above and ready for another big step up, after all it could have been division 5 football we were playing up until today. It is doubtful we will not come down again, but what an adventure for this young team to attempt to avoid that happenening.
