Borgis FC completed their remarkable survival story with a final day 2-1 home win against Thekop FC, thanks to two goals from striker Rasmus Fjeldstad. Borgis were on the brink of oblivion at the halfway stage of the season and nobody predicted that they could turn things around. However, three gutsy away wins helped to pave their way back to safety.
Five unbeaten games in a row meant that Borgis went into the final day without having to rely on another team; it was simple: win and safety was theirs. Borgis were already riding a wave of confidence going into the game and this continued into their final 90 minutes of football.
17-year-old midfielder Mathias Rosenløw, who has often impressed this season, thought he had given Borgis an early lead, but his goal was wrongfully disallowed for offside. The decision had no effect on Borgis and they continued to press high up the field. Then soon after Rasmus Fjeldstad had the first of his two goals after some good work from a corner kick allowed him space to head home the ball.
The atmosphere was tense going into the second half until Fjeldstad made it two, this time a long-range effort that caught the goalkeeper completely by surprise. However Mikkjel Toverud pulled one back instantly for Thekop meaning the fans were back to biting their nails again.
The game was then turned on its head when Vegard Alm - the League's top goal scorer - equalised for Thekop. The away end erupted when the goal went in but the referee soon silenced them, waving the goal off for another dubious offside decision. The instant replays showed the striker was clearly two-yards onside. In terms of awful refereeing decisions, it was 1-1!
In terms of the actual result, though, Borgis FC had their win and safety was accomplished. In the end they finished in 4th place, just one point off a promotion place and despite all the doom and gloom throughout the season, Borgis actually bettered their previous season by four points and was just six shy of their best ever season.
Manager Adam Moran spoke at length with us after the game to say:
"I was so nervous going into the final game but as soon as Rasmus got that first goal, my emotions instantly changed. I knew we would go on to win. The form and confidence of the players was sky high and nobody could change that. Every man played his part, lead by an exceptional performance from Rasmus. I am just so happy for the lads!
"We actually improved upon last season's tally by four points and in the end we narrowly missed out on 2nd. A few of the lads were talking about the Lamb and Flag game that we drew earlier on in the season, but I stopped them doing that because it's easy to start saying, "what if that never happened?" it did, get over it!
"We are now all going to celebrate our amazing achievement, and hopefully next season we can push on and enjoy it a little more than we did this time around."
