| KP hold on to tame Cubs |
Kellys Poets managed to hold out against Cubs this afternoon to secure their place in Division 3 for another season at least and in doing so help Infront to let go of the frustration he felt at conceding late equaliser's in their last two games.
Having suffered the agony of an injury time equaliser against Chupacabra in last Sunday's league match, Infront's charges realised they ideally needed to win since they could not be sure of any return from their final two fixtures against the top two. Furthermore, their appetites were somewhat further fuelled by knowing that they'd suffered similar ignominy at the hands of Rusholme midweek, this time conceding an even later leveller.
Perhaps it was this which kept them focused when, after A A Milne head set up goals for Gary Forshaw and Kevin Trap within the first quarter hour of the restart, the home side came back into the game and pressed for an equaliser once Cardozo halved the deficit with eleven minutes remaining.
Unlike the previous two games, the team seemed collectively focused and despite Iturriaga rather stupidly picking up a second yellow in injury time, it was the only disappointment this time around.
"We played well for the full ninety-plus minutes today," said Infront. "Even when they pulled me back, we still looked the likelier to score."
The Poets were denied an early opener thanks to the linesman's flag but continued to look the better side, albeit with limited results. However, they came out of the blocks the quicker after the turnaround and within twelve minutes found themselves two-up. The first on fifty-two minutes saw Milne chest down Keiron Cole's long diagonal pass before squaring to the onrushing Forshaw who hit a first-time shot that four the sweet spot and simply flew into the top left corner.
The second on fifty-seven minutes was a more intricate move, culminating in a fine cross from Milne to the back post where Trapp, having managed to wrong foot his marker, simply guided the ball back past De Bruin into the opposite corner of the net.
Corinthian didn't let up, absorbing all Cubs attacks and having a few chances themselves. However, Cardozo manage to break free of the marking at a set-pice and headed home a bullet from Ekselius' corner.
Thankfully for KP, this proved to be the home side's only reason for cheer and although Iturriaga was dismissed in injury time, the away side suffered few scares and were relieved to be heading home with three points.
