Parkway Forest did not manage to get a win on their first matchweek in Division 1, but the team managed to produce a more impressive display in their home opener against Famalicão FC. The match ended in a 2-0 scoreline, but it could have been more as Forest launched ten chances at the Famalicão goal.
It was an excellent display of high pressure as Forest unsettled Famalicão captain Cesar Elias from kick-off. Famalicão were forced into making mistakes as they could not pass out from the back effectively. The hurrying and harrying paid off early, as Forest won a corner in the seventh minute that midfielder Suleyman Sanli promptly converted. A goal after fifteen minutes was disallowed as Forest continued to pile on the pressure.
Despite that, Famalicão was able to launch some counter-attacks of their own but to no avail, as the teams entered into the halftime break at 1-0. Famalicão manager ChelseaPat made a defensive sub after the break, but this proved fruitless as Forest turned the screw in the second half. It was only thanks to the efforts of the Famalicão goalkeeper that the game remained at 1-0. Famalicão threatened to steal a point off of Forest's profligacy with two good chances in the second half but ultimately Forest striker Aroldo Coppola killed the game in the eighty-eighth minute.
Manager codespyder was immensely proud after the game:
"I knew that we had more to prove after the result of the first game, and today was proof of that. I thought it was the best I've ever seen this team perform. The plan was unconventional and risky, but by applying pressure on the fulcrum of their three-man defense, we managed to regain possession quickly and attack constantly.
Their goalkeeper is so good, so of course it would require 10 chances to grab a goal or two. If we had not generated so many chances, I doubt we would have gotten the three points.
This is going to be such a competitive division, but I'm looking forward to the challenge. Every game is going to require careful thought and deliberation in mapping out the tactics if we are to stay up at this level."
