Cup Run End |
Parkway Forest has suffered yet another premature cup exit. The feeling in the locker room after the 7-6 penalty shootout loss to FC Oranges was mixed. Both games in the cup tie finished 0-0, but Forest mustered more opportunities - 4 to 1 - over the two games. Oranges are another difficult Div 1 side, so unlike in past seasons, there was no shame in losing.
And yet, all of those sentiments felt hollow.
"I built this squad in order to challenge for both the league and the cup," said manager codespyder after the game. "While I respect the high skill level of our opposition, it still sucks to exit the cup at the 4th round again."
"We had a taste of playing in the Round of 16 several seasons ago and we wanted that experience again. To fall so far short due to the chaos that is the penalty shootout seems desperately unfair."
"Winning the league is a dream with this team, and we're fighting hard for promotion just to have that chance. However, the chances for that are slim. The Cup was always a more realistic path towards a trophy since upsets can happen and anything goes."
"Look at last season, when Tees Tigers won despite being "only" a Div 2 side. They won because they are strong, and we thought this year we would be as strong."
"I guess we just weren't strong enough."
