KP Crowned In Style |
Kelly's Poets ended up in top spot to take the 4J title thanks to a last day win over Paisley Saints. The 3-0 result meant they held off Cubs who had to settle for second place following their 2-1 victory over Bingham Thursday.
Most important for KP was a god start, and they got it when Eidur Einersen met Lauro Bergomi's searching left wing diagonal cross with a firm back-post header that looped back overthrew stranded Hofstede with 8 minutes on the clock.
The home side were shaken but any confidence for KP was suddenly tested when veteran all-rounder Garry Forshaw was forced to limp off with barely quarter-hour in. Despite this, the home side were repelled and the lead held by the half-time break.
The second period saw the visitors up their ante, and despite Michele Birindelli being denied shortly after the restart, sustained pressure saw KP's lead doubled on 55 minutes. Freddie Albertson's through ball into the inside right channel was seized upon by Alex Milne, who managed to outsmart Wiley before curling a cheeky cross that Birgir Gylfison merely had to glance into the far corner from 8 yards.
The home side seemed to drop off at this point, as they realised that Wham were winning 3-0 against Letham and thus almost certainly safe. However, they did rally and threaten a comeback, only to then be hit on the counter with 11 minutes remaining. Once again it was a header, this time with Lewandowski, on as Forshaw's replacement, providing a left-wing cross that bounced and evaded all but Albertson, who calmly cushioned the ball back into the far corner.
With the match all but won, KP took the remainder easily and saw out the last ten minute with the occasional "olé" when KP got the ball. Then, at the final whistle, he triumphant team ran to their fans to thank them for their support.
"We deserved that I think," said Infrontcat. "We started poorly and were 6th after 2 games. But after that, the only blemishes were a couple of draws against Letham. They were a decent side- as were today's opponents- so it shows how tough it has been to win it this year."
"To only drop 4 more points after the first two games and win the last five, out scoring our opponents 19-1 shows how they deserve this title."
