Mudchute win the cup
Having been beaten in the last two Cup Finals, both times by the might of CL Istanbul 05, it was with nervous trepidation that the Packers approached this edition. Thankfully, Istanbul were not the opponents this time but Aardvark Owls, a top quality side about to enter the Ultimate League and very well run by top manager AndyOwl.
The loss of Fallenius to injury was a bitter blow for the Owls and with that Mudchute looked very slightly stronger on paper but games aren't played on paper. AndyOwl got his tactics spot on and before the game kicked off, Mudchute thought they were going to be in for a rough ride and so it proved.
It was a game of few chances with both defences staying strong. Aardvark took the lead in the 41st minute when Romao beat the offside trap to run on to a through ball and slot the ball home.
Mudchute were feeling the heat now and couldn't muster a shot on target. Baldo Celebic has been a rock for the Packers this season and with time running out he curled a wonderful 30 yard strike into the top corner in the 81st minute.
Extra time brought more of the same with both sides struggling to create an opening. Aardvark missed a chance early and the game was looking to be set fair for a shootout when Mudchute got a corner with 1 minute left. Pellini swung in a beautifully flighted ball and Andreas Artursson rose like a salmon to head the ball home and forever imprint himself as a club legend. Aardvark barely had time to take the kick off before the ref called a halt to proceedings to send everyone connected with Mudchute Packers into ecstasy.
Afterwards the manager paid tribute to departed manager WhenSkysAreGrey who built this team but found himself unable to continue last season. "This win is a tribute to his patience and skill in team building," said the manager.
What's next for Mudchute? This manager wants to mould a side himself, so there will be some transfer activity and maybe a short break before they are challenging for honours again but this is a day for the club to relish.
