Shock away win revives VSU chances |
Just when it looked like Viking South Utsira's Division 1a tenure was doomed to end at the close of the current season, VelvetAndroid's side dragged their best performance in ages out this week to record their first league win in five attempts and reignite their chance of beating the drop.
Considering the game was away at 3rd-placed JAV Idols, who were competing for a promotion place, had lost just once all season and only conceded 3 goals in 11 league matches, the stage did not exactly seem set for a revival for an Utsiran side spiralling towards the drop while attempting to make space in their starting XIs for ever more good teenage prospects from the currently fecund youth academy. Yet the debut (!) for 19-year-old forward Irene Hervig proved an unexpectedly auspicious one, Viking weathering a difficult first half before turning things up a notch or three in the second to charge to a stunning victory through Elza Klovning's 54th-minute strike and Anneke Hovland's 11th of the season with 11 to play.
The result, coupled with an equally shocking 4-0 thrashing for Ansvarsfulla Divor at a 7th-placed Kalkbrottet who had only scored 5 in total previously, lifted Viking ahead of the former by a point to 5th, with the latter still a long way behind Divor on GD yet now very much in with a chance of staying up too. 4th-placed Spearwives of Ygritte's narrow loss at leaders Hot Celebrity Girls meanwhile kept them just two points further ahead, meaning that with two rounds of fixtures to go there are two relegation spots to be decided among four teams. And all four face off in the penultimate round this coming Tuesday, with Viking hosting Kalkbrottet and Ansvarsfulla going to Ygritte in two absolutely key clashes.
