Girls somehow in the Last Eight |
The Wælcyrie Girls are through to the quarter finals of the Xpert Ladies Cup for only the second time in the club's history. However, nobody at the club, or their fans for that matter, can quite believe it. On paper, their tie against the White Swans, who are currently top of Division 4j, seemed tricky, but winnable, but when two of their players picked up suspensions following Tuesday's league fixture, "tricky" became "very difficult". And "very difficult" became "getting on for impossible" when they lost forward Nanette Brace in the 15th minute. Somehow, they survived normal and extra time without conceding a goal though their opponents had most of the possession and created more chances. Though Wælcyrie nearly nicked it in extra time with a late free kick.
There then followed one of the most bizarre penalty shoot outs ever seen in which 9 penalties were missed and only 7 scored. With the shoot out tied at 3-3 and into sudden death, either side could have won the tie and there were 5 consecutive penalty kicks missed before Nora Sundin stepped up and held her nerve to win the tie for the Wælcyrie Girls.
A big shout out for Wælcyrie keeper and captain, Orsolya Dán, who kept a clean sheet and was only beaten by 3 of the 8 penalties she faced.
