Promotion sparks carnival time in Rio

A memorable title race concluded on Tuesday with Maracanã clinching top spot in Division 5:20 with a 2-0 win against Marske United on the Atlantic coast. After a rollercoaster campaign which saw three clubs spending time at the summit, the Carioca needed to avoid defeat on the final day to secure promotion to Division 4 for just the second time in their 15-year history.  With the visitor's manager Swargeey absent from the touchline Maracanã took the lead midway through the first half when striker Henry Belmont finished from close range for his fifth league goal of the season. A late header from midfielder Jeff Sharples sent the home fans into carnival mode with the Samba beats rocking the Avenida Atlântica long after the final whistle. Addressing the media in the post-match press conference manager WillB said: "It's been such a competitive season with Jack Loons setting the pace for the first few weeks and looking really strong, then a great battle with Audazo and J9 for the title. The quality in the top five teams has been really high so it's been a good challenge and we can take that with us now into next season." Tuesday's win saw the Brazilians produce their best match rating since WillB took charge in July 2022 and their third best of all time.
