JC Sunbeams
Division 3d, Dream League
Manager: Granthawksworth
Fortune shines on Sunbeams in 30th DL
What an amazing season Season 29 was, with such a close title battle there was a real danger of this season being after the Lord Mayor show but when the team stats before the season started suggested the title battle would once again be close, we were in for yet another classic Dream League season. Plus, with the standard of teams being raised, who would be champions?
WolverhamptonWonders were the reigning champions but the retirement of Alberto Simoni significantly weakened their defence. Last season’s runners up Golden Goal were aiming to go one better, as were Broken Foundation, Falkarnas were hoping to be in on the act while Sommers would probably be surprised to even do well. Then the standard of promoted teams was extremely high.
Two former cup winners, JC Sunbeams and C.F Real Madrid, were the division champions while a very strong FC Sensi squad won the play-off to seal a place in the top flight. All of these teams were around the same strength as last season’s title challenging teams or better, it was going to be a fascinating season.
The team that were considered pre-season favourites by many of the top flight contenders were one of the strongest teams in the entire Dream League. Cup winners in Season 28, C.F Real Madrid’s early cup exit allowed them to concentrate on the league. And boy did they send out a warning message to the top flight, being promoted by 11 points over second placed The New Sharks. They had the strongest starting XI out of any team in the top flight so it’s easy to see why they’ve be favourites, and knowing time was running out for his side, Alexmakerulzz declared pre-season that it was title or nothing this season, with some key squad members starting to get a bit on the old side. Fortunately, none of those were star man Alf Cavendish. The outstanding 29 year old midfielder had scored 143 goals in his career prior to this season; to say he was key to Real Madrid was an understatement.
Aside from a few youngsters around the place, the biggest signing of the transfer window was Cristofer Sietes at JC Sunbeams, signed to replace the retired Valdemar Kumlin. WolverhamptonWonders manager Wolfee told the Xpert Daily last season that the retired Alberto Simoni was irreplaceable and true to his word, instead of chasing an experienced defender to replace Simoni, he decided to bring in 21 year old Ricardo Costa to ensure the other end of the defensive line was all set for the future. 20 year old rising star Wes Francis was also signed from Euro League club Silent Riders and another potential star in Shelton Niedermyer joined the champions. South Hooligans added Juan Quintero to their plethora of youngsters and Falkarnas signed Roland Gronros and Darcy Penney. There were a few high profile departures too, Golden Goal legend Daniel Niculae departed the club for a very low fee (although considering his age that isn’t surprising), while Falkarnas BK midfielder Broderick Rigby was also sold off as Falchen91 sought to keep a conveyor belt running at his club. FC Sensi’s only transfer business pre-season was to sack three failed youth prospects. This left the club with a very strong looking roster. With several teams closely matched in competitiveness it was anyone’s guess who would win the title, even if the slight edge was with Real Madrid in terms of strength. At any level however, and especially the top level, slight skill advantages can be overcome by supposedly weaker teams so the Dream League was set up for another exciting season.
Opening day saw newly promoted Sunbeams take on reigning champions WolverhamptonWonders at the Unwanted Arena, a stadium hosting top flight football for the first time since the days of Led Zeppelin and Dulka Prague Awaykit. The two teams last met each other back in Season 22 when both were playing in Division 4. Eight seasons later and they were in the top flight, albeit following a change of management at the Sunbeams. The big question was how the Wolves defence would cope without Alberto Simoni for the first time in 17 seasons. In the end though, Sunbeam’s Cristofer Sietes had a disastrous debut for his new club as he scored an own goal, handing Wolves the lead. Sunbeams proceeded to dominate the second half but Grady Fitzpatrick was unable to score. As a result, he was subsequently substituted by Wellenius who then picked up a major injury to leave the Sunbeams with just 10 men. Wolves sealed the victory in the 90th minute through their captain Randall Sawyer to get their title defence off to a good start.
Elsewhere, penalty agony for Sensi as they missed the chance to go level with Broken Foundation who then proceeded to walk to a 3-0 victory. Both Wolves and Broken Foundation could now focus on preparing for the XCL knowing that their campaigns were off to good starts.
No XCL for Sommers’ team this season, just Dream League and cup fixtures, the first being against last seasons’ runners up Golden Goal. After a boring first half, the game exploded into life when Rune Tangen scored. Ramiz Burek seemed to have equalised but the goal was ruled out for offside. As proven by last season, Sommers’ team, even when rebuilding, should never be taken lightly. Golden Goal got the win they were looking for, but they had to work for it.
Bad news for Real Madrid on opening day as two slight injuries for Amilcar Agrelos forced the midfielder off for 18 year old off Birkir Guofinnir. To make matters worse it took until after the 80th minute for them to have any attempt on goal, Normlund’s attempt was ruled out for offside but what a dramatic finish to the game, Tagusagawa’s 87th minute goal looked to have sealed the deal but Holmertz had other ideas and gave Falkarnas a priceless point in the 90th minute…. Or he would have but his goal was ruled out for offside... Like last season, Falkarnas weren’t going to make it easy for their rivals, so for Real Madrid to get a smash and grab win is very welcome, but Agrelos on crutches already saw Alex fuming to the press. They weren’t to know it at the time but the reverse of this set of fixtures would be one of the most exciting set of fixtures in Dream League history.
The fixture that decided the title last season came about this time round as both teams’ second fixture, but WolverhamptonWonders had made major headlines on X11 by deciding to play an entire youth team in the XCL. Now normally you get some teams who’ve been in the XCL rebuilding but debutants? Unfortunately, Jk’s hopes of the Wolves putting out a weakened team in the league were dashed as a full strength Wolves team started. The game turned out to be a close affair, but a hat-trick from Randall Sawyer proved enough to win it despite Cutler’s goal and Biler’s effort ruled out for offside. Real Madrid had hardly been convincing in their first two fixtures and they lost to JC Sunbeams despite taking the lead early on through Alf Cavendish, but a Strandstein free kick and a late penalty by Mike Hunt meant the Santiago Bernebau faithful had already seen a home loss this season. Was Agrelos’ absence already having an effect on the team or were they really not the team they were cracked up to be? With all the other winners from day 1 losing it meant that the “rebuilding” champions were 3 points clear at the top, although Golden Goal at least tried to fight back from 3-0 down to lose 3-2.
From last season, one lesson that could be learned is that a rebuilding South Hooligans at home can never be taken lightly especially with Elroy Spooner in goal, but FC Sensi’s Bart King scored twice and had a goal ruled out in a 3-0 away victory for Asdabayor’s team and after being incredibly unlucky against Broken Foundation, this was the tonic they needed. The Hooligans followed up this defeat to Sensi with a trip to reigning champions and league leaders WolverhamptonWonders. The game proved to be a pretty close affair and an outstanding display by Luciano Rossi in the South Hooligans goal saw him survive an onslaught of Wolves attacks to gain a point. Whether that point would be built on is another matter. But this was great news for the rest of the Dream League and someone needed to capitalise. But who would it be? Not Golden Goal or Real Madrid as the two played out an entertaining 2-2 draw and both could have won it in added time. Instead it was Broken Foundation who after the substitution of Carl Mitchell saw their striker Cutler score two goals to move just one point behind the Wolves.
But with a full strength Real Madrid side coming to London, thanks to the timely injury recovery of Agrelos, they were going to be tested. After both teams had a goal disallowed, Foundation turned it on in the second half to breach Kilian’s net and win 2-0. With Falkarnas BK being WolverhamptonWonders’ bogey team last season, there was a chance that this victory could be crucial in helping them go top. And true to form, Falkarnas outplayed Wolves and a brace from Maximilliam Willysson along with a goal from Holmertz ensured that this bogey trend would continue, despite a late Kearney Hitchcock free kick. Wolves also lost the inspirational Jonathon Gall to injury, although their case wasn’t anything like Sensi’s fate the previous week where two major midfielders were injured (and they came so close to beating Golden Goal without those midfielders only to concede twice in the last few minutes). With the defeat of the Wolves, Broken Foundation were now the league leaders although they had the same number of points as Falkarnas BK, only being top on goal difference which doesn’t mean much after just four league games.
Foundation kept top spot with a 3-0 win over South Hooligans. JC Sunbeams ensured that Foundation would be the sole leaders after an inspired performance by their midfielder Christopher Strandstein, who scored a hat-trick of free kicks, which in itself is an amazing achievement, to beat Falkarnas BK. It was only a two point lead for Foundation following Golden Goal’s away win over the champions but it was a lead nevertheless, but could they maintain it?
Halfway through the season were perhaps two of the most important matches in the entire season. A double header between Broken Foundation and Golden Goal could potentially be decisive as after round 6 they were both level on 13 points. Stats suggested they would be crackling games with the last encounter on the final day of last season being a goalfest as both sides chased a title which neither of them won. The team that did win the title, WolverhamptonWonders, were feeling the effects of the loss of Alberto Simoni at the back and despite only playing their strongest team in the league (youth teams were fielded in the XCL and cup), teams were taking advantage of a vulnerable defence which meant they had 7 points after 6 games and sat in the relegation zone. With the games between Broken Foundation and Golden Goal, ideally, one of the sides had to win them and then ensure that the other side didn’t win the return game or else the chasing pack would be let back into it. The first match at Holmsbo was indeed a goalfest, with Sorensen and Terada putting Golden Goal 2-0 up before Biler pulled one back and Lafitte thought he’d equalised, only to see his goal ruled out. Schroter killed the game off in the 91st minute which also dropped Broken Foundation to 3rd in the table after Real Madrid won a dramatic game against the champions with a 93rd minute winner from Merino. So, at the halfway stage of the season, Golden Goal led the Dream League. After 3rd and 2nd placed finishes the previous two seasons, would this be the season they finally claim the Dream League title? A win at London Road would go a long way towards sending out a message to the rest of the Dream League that Golden Goal were a team to be taken seriously in this title race.
But there was one major problem that Golden Goal had, and it was a problem they’d had for the past few seasons, and that was a lack of strength at keeper position. First choice keeper Roi av Reyni wasn’t bad but he wasn’t good enough for the top division and often conceded crucial goals. Enter, Man United goalkeeper Erico Jacinto. For approximately 7.4 million econ Golden Goal finally had a top class goalkeeper and AAndreas was hoping that he would be the inspiration that they needed. He made his league debut against Broken Foundation but unfortunately his clean sheet lasted just 9 minutes as Art Culter set to work on scoring yet again for the home side. But his impact was keenly felt moments later. Roi av Reyni might have had problems with Franco Alba’s free kick but Jacinto made mincemeat of it. Broken Foundation were bombarding the Golden Goal and it was only through an unlikely source, Jimi Mallett, that they took the lead again. As is so often the case with Broken Foundation, they had tons of chances but failed to convert them, Jacinto was looking like an inspired signing. Sub Ron Hodges made it 3-1 and it looked like Broken Foundation were heading back level on points with the top. We knew that a win for each side would suit neither of them but that was exactly what had happened.
Thanks to Broken Foundation and Golden Goal tripping up on each other, the onus was now on C.F Real Madrid and Falkarnas BK to launch themselves right into this title fight, it was looking to be another extremely close season. Falkarnas and C.F Real Madrid both won and incredibly 4 teams were top of the league on 16 points. Real Madrid then travelled to Kardinia Park which was often a fortress last season but with no Elroy Spooner as an option for South Hooligans anymore, they fell behind in the first minute thanks to Arnold Normlund. A massive away win for Real Madrid would undermine their championship credentials and a nice 4-0 win was exactly what they got. Another thing that was for sure was that there wasn’t going to be four teams on the same points total at the top after this round as Broken Foundation played Falkarnas. A 2-0 win for Foundation was a set-back for Falkarnas as they fell behind Real Madrid and Foundation. Golden Goal had a scare when Christopher Strandstein gave the Sunbeams the lead from a free kick but they came from behind to ensure they were keeping pace with their rivals on top, it was a fascinating season.
The season took a dramatic twist when Real Madrid manager Alexmakerulzz, when faced with a glut of injuries and suspensions to an already small squad, threw in the towel for his game against Sensi. This allowed FC Sensi to get a crucial 3 points in their fight with JC Sunbeams against the drop but it also meant Real Madrid fell 3 points behind Broken Foundation and Golden Goal. But with Real Madrid still needing to play both Golden Goal and Broken Foundation it was still wide open. The game between Real Madrid and Broken Foundation then was vital for the season. A Broken Foundation win would make it really hard for Real Madrid to win the title so it was imperative that Real Madrid won this game to keep their title hopes alive. Unfortunately for them, Alex failed to turn up to his team’s big match. Incredible developments! Still, the team strength was enough for them to get on with but in a match they looked like dominating, a huge controversial turning point in Real Madrid’s season arose. Tatsuru Tagusagawa’s waist high challenge on Dragoljub Blazevic saw the Real Madrid midfielder sent off, straight red card. Incredible developments which swung the game in favour of Broken Foundation, it was just what they needed to get their title challenge back on track. Easier said than done though when John-Olaf Kilian is in goal for Real Madrid and the remaining Madrid players kept chances to a minimum to ensure Broken Foundation would only get away with this one with a point. This was perfect for Golden Goal, who would have preferred the other two drew with each other and if they beat FC Sensi they would go top of the league. Easier said than done though as FC Sensi are tricky opponents for anyone to face with them fighting a relegation battle with JC Sunbeams, both teams being on equal points going into this game. Despite Terada’s free kick early on, a late goal from Archibald Cronan gave Sensi a vital point but it wasn’t enough to stop JC Sunbeams overtaking them. Injuries and suspensions looked set to take their toll on the title race. The title race was so exciting that somehow this reporter failed to take notice of when it happened, but it had happened.
Before we move on to show you the league table, let it be known that this may be the last time for a very long time that you see South Hooligans mentioned in the reviews of the top flight of the Dream League. In Round 10 they were mathematically relegated to Division 1 for the first time since Season 20. Very few teams will spend 10 consecutive seasons in the top flight and very few will win five titles and the XCL during that time. Sommers has done a superb job with them and we wish them luck in their future endeavours. Goodbye Sommers, the Dream League won’t be the same without you; hopefully you aren’t out for too long.
Oh yeah, the relegation battle is just as exciting as the title battle. Sensi’s point actually ended up keeping them out of the dropzone despite JC Sunbeams’ win over the Hooligans. And this was because the champions showed that they still had fight in them by beating Falkarnas BK and sending them into the relegation zone on goal difference. So instead of Sensi being level on points with the Sunbeams, they were now level on points with Falkarnas in a crazy relegation battle. Don’t forget, Falkarnas were title challengers at one point. No after the Lord Mayor’s Show here, that’s for sure.
So with 3 games to go, the table looked like this:
Place Team GP W D L GF-GA GD P
1 Broken Foundation 11 7 2 2 20 - 9 11 23
2 Golden Goal 11 7 2 2 26 - 16 10 23
3 C.F. Real Madrid 11 6 2 3 23 - 12 11 20
4 JC Sunbeams 11 6 0 5 20 - 14 6 18
5 FC Sensi 11 5 1 5 21 - 17 4 16
6 Falkarnas BK 11 5 1 5 17 - 17 0 16
7 WolverhamptonWonders 11 3 1 7 16 - 29 -13 10
8 South Hooligans 11 0 1 10 2 - 31 -29 1
No doubt what the biggest game of this round was. After blowing the game against Broken Foundation, Alexmakerulzz had the chance to try and save his season by beating Golden Goal, but outside assistance was now needed if either were to win the title. An inspired performance by Madrid saw them go 4-0 up in 60 minutes before Golden Goal started a comeback which ultimately proved fruitless as the second goal was ruled out. But still, this 4-1 defeat was a massive blow to Golden Goal’s title chances and meant that Real Madrid were right back in this title race.
Still, both teams would want Broken Foundation to slip up against relegation battling JC Sunbeams. And that’s exactly what happened. Sunbeams dominated in chances and goals from Sean Bleasdale and Grady Fitzpatrick gave Sunbeams a deserved victory and set up a tantalising finish to the season. It meant that Real Madrid now led the title race on goal difference but it also meant JC Sunbeams had an outside chance of winning the title should all of the teams above them slip up at least once in the last two games.
A relegation match between the last two league champions isn’t something you see every day but that’s exactly what South Hooligans and WolverhamptonWonders were playing. The Hooligans were already down but a win would bring Wolves down with them given that the two teams that could potentially save Wolves, FC Sensi and Falkarnas BK, were playing each other. They got the win, 3-1, which meant that WolverhamptonWonders, the reigning champions, became the first champions since Danubius Galati to be relegated while holding the title. We wish them well with the continued rebuilding and hope to see them back in the top flight in the future. With two relegation spots decided, only one team could potentially go down now and FC Sensi’s thrashing at the hands of Falkarnas, coming just after their upset
So, with 2 rounds to go, this ridiculously exciting Dream League season saw its table look like this:
Place Team GP W D L GF-GA GD P
1 C.F. Real Madrid 12 7 2 3 27 - 13 14 23
2 Broken Foundation 12 7 2 3 20 - 11 9 23
3 Golden Goal 12 7 2 3 27 - 20 7 23
4 JC Sunbeams 12 7 0 5 22 - 14 8 21
5 Falkarnas BK 12 6 1 5 19 - 17 2 19
6 FC Sensi 12 5 1 6 21 - 19 2 16
7 WolverhamptonWonders 12 3 1 8 17 - 32 -15 10
8 South Hooligans 12 1 1 10 5 - 32 -27 4

The table doesn’t make good reading for FC Sensi fans, that loss to Falkarnas combined with the Sunbeams win was a dagger blow to their survival chances and a Falkarnas win combined with anything but a win for Sensi would see them relegated.  But more on that in a moment.
First of all, title outsiders JC Sunbeams had a must win game against C.F Real Madrid. Win and they could start to be taken seriously as title contenders although they would also need a leg up from Broken Foundation and Golden Goal in order to win it. Equally, Real Madrid needed to win this game to keep their advantage in the title race as they had the highest goal difference compared to Broken Foundation and Golden Goal. The game looked to be a pretty boring affair after neither side was able to fashion a chance but it ended up being a tale of two free kicks. Alf Cavendish had the chance to win for Real Madrid late on but he missed the goal. Christopher Strandstein then had a chance from a free kick in the 90th minute… and dramatically won the game. Oh dear, this hadn’t gone well at all for C.F Real Madrid as they conceded the lead in the title race in a crucial game. But who had the lead been conceded to?
Wolves, following the confirmation of their relegation, sold off two of their title winning side before the game against Broken Foundation, the rebuild was happening in earnest and a win for Broken Foundation was needed if they were to stay in the title race.  And they got the win they needed against a side they have previously struggled against, but not today, Broken Foundation were back on top of the Dream League and a win away from the title.
As sad a loss as the Hooligans are from the top flight, WolverhamptonWonders are also champions themselves and while they were only here for two seasons, they played a role in two of the most exciting Dream League seasons of all time, winning the first one.
There was still the matter of Golden Goal’s game against Falkarnas BK of course and Falkarnas needed to win to be able to secure their safety. But Golden Goal needed the win in order to stay level on points with Broken Foundation at the top. Things got worse when Golden Goal received an injury to Tomiyuki Terada and saw Zvonimir Flipovic sent off. 10 man Golden Goal got back into the game however thanks to Ketil Sorensen but it wasn’t enough for Golden Goal who remain in 3rd place in the league, albeit level on points with JC Sunbeams going into the final game of the season. It was still anyone’s game
The draw eased the pressure on FC Sensi but they now HAD to win in order to stand any chance of staying in the top flight. It’s a good job then that they were playing a South Hooligans side that was only interested in DV and they comfortably won 4-0 to move within a point of Falkarnas BK but still needing Falkarnas to slip up in order to survive. They also would need to win themselves and this backdrop is played against title chasing Broken Foundation…
Yes, going into the final round of games, the table looks like this and oh boy is it close or is it close?
Place Team GP W D L GF-GA GD P
1 Broken Foundation 13 8 2 3 23 - 11 12 26
2 JC Sunbeams 13 8 0 5 23 - 14 9 24
3 Golden Goal 13 7 3 3 28 - 21 7 24
4 C.F. Real Madrid 13 7 2 4 27 - 14 13 23
5 Falkarnas BK 13 6 2 5 20 - 18 2 20
6 FC Sensi 13 6 1 6 25 - 19 6 19
7 WolverhamptonWonders 13 3 1 9 17 - 35 -18 10
8 South Hooligans 13 1 1 11 5 - 36 -31 4
So, these were the permutations going into the final day. If Broken Foundation won away to FC Sensi, which was far from guaranteed, they would win the title. But if they slipped up on the final day and lost, then a win for JC Sunbeams against already relegated WolverhamptonWonders would see them win the title, but only if they were able to maintain their goal difference advantage over Golden Goal, who had to beat South Hooligans and hope that Broken Foundation lost, along with hoping that JC Sunbeams didn’t win and if they did, that Golden Goal equalled or outscored them on goal difference. Yes, the permutations really are that complicated and if that wasn’t enough, if Broken Foundation lost to FC Sensi and both Golden Goal and JC Sunbeams failed to win, then a win for Real Madrid against Falkarnas BK would see them crowned Dream League champions. It was a maze of permutations and the final day couldn’t come soon enough.
As if that wasn’t enough, FC Sensi needed a win to survive and the only way they could survive was if Broken Foundation didn’t win the title. A Real Madrid title victory would be the perfect scenario for Sensi as it would see Falkarnas get relegated.
Matchday arrived and everything centred on what happened in the game between FC Sensi and Broken Foundation. And Sensi took the lead through Hatak Mesura, in the 10th minute to give great hope to the rest of the league.
Meanwhile, in the game between South Hooligans and Golden Goal, Bjorn Finnnsen gave Golden Goal the lead and they were now top of the league and headed for the Dream League title. WolverhamptonWonders were surprisingly giving JC Sunbeams a run for their money with a mostly youth side.
Despite the best efforts of Broken Foundation, they appeared to be unable to get a goal back. Blazevic and Lafitte made no impression on the Sensi goal and Marcos Solez doubled Sensi’s lead.
Sunbeams were still failing to score against the Wolves but Golden Goal were making the Dream League title theirs. JC Sunbeams had the better of the chances against Wolves but couldn’t convert. At half time, the title was heading to Golden Goal.
The second half got underway and disaster struck for the Sunbeams as Ricardo Costa scored for Wolves. Wolves may be about to relinquish their title but they proved they would go down fighting in order to do so. This was great news for Golden Goal but the Sunbeams finally equalised through Rikard Feldt, proving they could score goals. They seemed unable to push on and get the winner however, with Golden Goal cruising.
Broken Foundations’ title hopes were well and truly broken when Jeremy Daley scored FC Sensi’s third and Luis Guaybita was sent off. It was cruel on Broken Foundation who have led for much of the season but poor away form let them down at the worst possible moment. But who would take the title?
In the 87th minute Hogni Schroter had an effort on goal but it didn’t go in. No matter, Golden Goal had won the game and it appeared they were going to win the title unless events in the other game went against them at the last moment. And that’s exactly what happened! In the 90th minute, WolverhamptonWonders striker Paddy Lunny accidentally miskicked in front of his own goal, and, amazingly, it went in! 2-1 to JC Sunbeams and it was quite frankly an amazing way to end this season. JC Sunbeams were about to win the title on goal difference unless Golden Goal could score in the 90th minute themselves, which they didn’t. Unbelievably, JC Sunbeams, who I remind you, were two points above the relegation zone after Round 11 and sitting 4th, while also never being top of the table at any stage, were Dream League champions in their first top flight season with Granthawksworth in charge by +1 GD.
Of course, Real Madrid still had an outside chance at the title but Falkarnas needed to win to secure their survival in the top flight. Sadly for Falkarnas, Real Madrid were just too strong and after three seasons in the top flight it is Falkarnas BK who are relegated. Their team is still in great shape though and they will be looking to bounce back to the top flight next season. We wish them all the best of luck.
The final table reads:
Place Team GP W D L GF-GA GD P
1 JC Sunbeams 14 9 0 5 25 - 15 10 27
2 Golden Goal 14 8 3 3 30 - 21 9 27
3 C.F. Real Madrid 14 8 2 4 29 - 14 15 26
4 Broken Foundation 14 8 2 4 23 - 14 9 26
5 FC Sensi 14 7 1 6 28 - 19 9 22
6 Falkarnas BK 14 6 2 6 20 - 20 0 20
7 WolverhamptonWonders 14 3 1 10 18 - 37 -19 10
8 South Hooligans 14 1 1 12 5 - 38 -33 4

So Falkarnas BK, champions WolverhamptonWonders and Dream League giants South Hooligans are all relegated. In their places, Topmen, Team Bochechinhas and The New Sharks will add a new dimension to the Dream League for next season. Surely the Dream League has reached its absolute limit in the amount of entertainment it can provide? Nothing will ever top this.

Following the end of the season we managed to catch up with Granthawksworth on his incredible last minute league triumph, here’s what he had to say:
XD: Congratulations on a stunning Dream League victory. Did you ever think you would get to this stage?

Granthawksworth: Thank you. At the beginning of the season I had hopes, especially with Sommers looking to rebuild, but these were swiftly crushed by a home loss in the first round! The Sunbeams managed to hang in there for a while, but I remember telling TonyBrazil how I was thinking about tearing up the team and starting rebuilding myself, as we were old and uncompetitive. The run of victories at the end was incredible, unexpected, and just shows "it ain't over till the fat lady sings".

XD: You had just sold off your first choice goalkeeper Broderick Miles and replaced him with the former youth keeper Dahlskog. Did you have any doubts about starting the 26/12 keeper in top flight matches?

Granthawksworth: It certainly looked a bad decision as he let in the only two chances in the first match in our opening loss, and Dahlskog's save percentage of 57 this season is pretty woeful at this level. But although Miles was a club legend, his age of 37 was causing big average age problems in an already veteran team.

What made the decision even harder was that our next best player, Kumlin, had retired the season before, so we'd effectively lost our two best players from previous seasons. I was banking on my defence not letting too many attempts on goal occur - this didn't always happen however.

XD: The season was incredibly close, probably the closest Dream League season of all time and for the most part it looked more like you were going to be relegated than winning the title. Which do you think was the most significant result in setting up the title challenge?

Granthawksworth: With the benefit of hindsight it was the 2nd round win away to C.F. Real Madrid, the strongest team in the league I think. It was totally unexpected and a bit lucky - our season in a nutshell. The win in the return fixture, also last minute and fortuitous, was crucial too.

XD: You will be back in the XCL next season. Last time you were pretty unfortunate to go out in the group stages, do you think you’ll do any better this time?

Granthawksworth: No! The standard there is so high, and we'll be two seasons past our peak then. We'll give it our best shot, but look for the aforementioned Real Madrid to carry the Dream League torch.

XD: South Hooligans have been relegated from the Dream League top flight. They were one of the bigger factors in the unpredictability of the last two seasons. Do you think future seasons in the Dream League will miss having the Hooligans in the top flight?

Granthawksworth: I doubt they'll be out for long, as Sommers hasn't dominated without knowing a thing or two about team building. His absence will create a void no doubt - I'm sure somebody else will be preparing to step in. The Hooligans at their best will be missed of course - but I won't mind not having to play them!

XD: Finally, Leyton Orient are having an incredible season at the moment, do you think a promotion will help raise the profile of the club particularly given that West Ham are moving into the Olympic Stadium?

Granthawksworth: I'm looking forward to next season when West Ham and Leyton Orient will be playing in the same Division and having some rousing local derbies!

I fear promotion, though welcome if it comes, will not change the situation - which is pretty grim for Orient. As a small local club how can you compete with a huge stadium with cut-price seats available all the time within two miles of your ground?

XD: Thank you for talking to us Grant and good luck in the future.

Granthawksworth: My pleasure.

Cup Review:
Of the 8 top flight teams, only two of them skipped the first round of the cup, Broken Foundation the holders and JC Sunbeams both missed the first round, everyone else was in action against lower division opposition. As a result the first round was extremely predictable with several 8-0 scorelines flying about the place. OK, nearly predictable, a shock exit for Dream League veteran CrownJules and his young King Clancy side as they fell to Division 7 opposition G.D. Vialonga who were in their first ever season of competitive football. CrownJules was fuming at the result to the press the day afterwards, with good reason as it was a particularly embarrassing defeat for one of the Dream League’s oldest sides (and he’s still hurt over it today, sorry for reminding you CJ :( ). The strongest squad in the entire Dream League, Alan Ford, then fell in the second round to Division 6 side Lilywhites (albeit Alan Ford are OAPs) but otherwise the rest of the strongest sides and seeds carried on. South Hooligans fell 3-1 to Division 5 side Whitefield in the third round but a dramatic second leg comeback, helped by the club’s decision to make this game Elroy Spooner’s farewell game, saw them into the fourth round. More than could be set for two time cup winners Romania who fell in the third round to Division 3 side Borneo Highlander although average age is now starting to set in for them and really killing them.
Into round four and it was time to start weeding out the many teams in the Dream League in order to find out who this season’s major players would be. Last season’s semi-finalists Heaton Mags went out in round 4 so definitely not them. Top flight side JC Sunbeams went out of the cup too, as did South Hooligans who were involved in a thrilling 4-3 defeat against AFC Columbus FC SC. The Hooligans were 3-1 up at one point so it was a tremendous comeback by Columbus to win the game. WolverhamptonWonders also went out at this stage despite playing a full strength team although their recent cup history isn’t great. There was a huge shock in Round 5 as cup holders Broken Foundation, after dominating chances in their round 5 clash against Division 4 side C Town fc, lost 1-0 after C town scored with their only chance. It left manager Chuck27 exclaiming “How the f**k did i get that win? I take it.:D”. The Australian was clearly in a state of shock and Xelente were now the highest seeded team left in the competition. Amazing turn of events and it put more pressure on Foundation to win the league now in order to secure some silverware. Golden Goal’s cup tie saw the debut of new goalkeeper Erico Jacinto who steered his team safely into the 6th round. Waiting for them in the 6th round were Division 5 opponents Rossendale United, who caused a few problems in the form of two goals but it was nothing to stop Golden Goal from going through.
Speaking of the 6th round, Team Bochechinhas, a team riding high in Division 1b at the time, saw their cup run ended by a team I expect to hear a lot about in the Dream League’s future, Miter’s Dream Titans. Bochechinhas took a two goal lead only to let it slip to the Titans  before 23 year old Rodrigo Prestes, one of the most talented up and coming strikers in the Dream League (and he wasn’t even Dream Titans’ best striker) put the nail in the coffin for the Division 1b side, their cup run was over. It was a bad day for Division 1b sides as The New Sharks also went out of the cup to lower league opposition while Winston Wolfe of Division 2c were victors over Falkarnas. So now just Real Madrid, Golden Goal and Sensi were left from the top division. F.C Sensi booked their last 16 place for the second season in a row and it was the fourth time they’d reached this stage, but they had never gone further, would this be their season? Well, with Golden Goal out of the cup, perhaps it could be. Or maybe it would be Real Madrid’s chance to do the double? It wouldn’t be Dream Titans’ season though, they were knocked out to 403rd seeds The Brains. Their time will come, I’m sure of it.
So, these are your last 16:
Winston Wolfe vs. Xelente
Team Bring It vs. FK Crvena Zvezda
FC Sensi vs. Hong Kong FC
JJ United vs. Hardraade FC
Desportivo Llama vs. Reservoir Cats
C.F Real Madrid vs. Noblesse Oblige
Real Subbuteo vs. El Glorioso 1
Serrinha Academy vs. The Brains
This was a very interesting draw indeed. The most notable tie in the last 16 was a repeat of Season 28’s cup final as C.F Real Madrid faced Noblesse Oblige, the latter hoping to get revenge on Real Madrid from their cup final defeat. Golden Goal’s conquerors Hong Kong FC then had to face another top flight team in FC Sensi. Rising star Sipu (who’s achievements were recognised with the MOTW award) and his Winston Wolfe team had had a great cup run to get to the last 16 and were now against last season’s finalists, Xelente. The ageing bones of Xelente’s first team players were shown up against the younger Winston Wolfe players and Sipu’s team were able to win the tie 2-1 and ensure none of last season’s finalists would make it. Could they win the Dream League cup though?
Final replay turned out to be a bit more exciting than when these two met in the final as while Real Madrid won that with a simple 1-0 victory, this time Noblesse’s Ewan Carniege gave them the lead. Real Madrid’s Agrelos equalised to take the game to extra time. No goals in extra time meant that this tie would be decided by penalties. Crucial misses by Teng Chai and Custodio Ledo meant Oblige once again fell to Real Madrid in the cup.
Elsewhere, Hong Kong failed to make it the double knock out as after several seasons of trying, Sensi finally made it to the quarter finals, Team Bring It came from behind to knock out Crvena Zvezda by 3 goals to 1 and a keeper injury let Reservoir Cats back into their game against Desportivo Llama when they looked to have had it sown up, having dominated on chances the game finished 2-2 and went to penalties. Naturally, Llama stood no chance when it came to penalties and the Cats went on into the quarter finals, rather fortunately, but through. They were joined by Hardraade FC, Real Subbuteo and Serrinha Academy in the quarter finals.

The quarter final draw turned out like this:
Hardraade FC vs. FC Sensi
Winston Wolfe vs. Reservoir Cats
C.F Real Madrid vs. Real Subbuteo
Team Bring It vs. Serrinha Academy
Reservoir Cats were lucky to be at this stage after the last round but could they take advantage of that luck and knock Winston Wolfe out? Well, in a league game against Team SpongeBob, Wolfe suffered a nasty injury to 19 year old Christopher Morissey. Not only that, but yellow cards for Lucian Prutton and Bruno do Nascimento ruled them out of the cup quarter final. The latter weakened Wolfe in key areas but could the Cats take advantage? Well, it looked like Winston Wolfe were going to stroll to a comfortable victory after Wyatt Wood scored twice for them. But in the second half, drama! An injury to Jumadi Prasayoto weakened the Wolfe defence as his replacement was 18 year old Ginawati. This combined with taking off Wyatt Wood let the kitties into the game and Carl-Otto Arlig scored two goals inside 4 minutes to level the tie up again. Just when Wolfe looked to be calling for extra time to save them, Eloy Cubillas scored an 89th minute winner in dramatic fashion to send Winston Wolfe tumbling out of the cup at the quarter final stage. What a cruel way for Sipu’s team to go out but Anna_cz, sister of Vasastan BK manager Janne_cz, will be delighted to see her team in the semi-finals of the Dream League cup to make up for a domestic season that hasn’t gone that well, although she’ll need to clean up all that kitty litter that her team left behind on the pitch.
Two teams who were significantly weakened in midfield by injuries and red cards went head to head as C.F Real Madrid and Real Subbuteo went head to head. An early goal by Cedric Holden and a slight injury for David Luis looked to see a shock upset on the cards but the masterful substitution of Alvaro Morata saw him score two late goals, including one in the 94th minute, to see Real Madrid progress to the semi-finals and give themselves a chance of winning the cup again, but they’d only narrowly made it through and after losing a key league game against Broken Foundation, their chances of doing the double were looking slim.
The only other top division team left in the competition, FC Sensi, had to face their cup opponent without key midfielder Izzy Klass. The first half was a bit of a dull affair with both sides having a free kick that failed. Sensi used indirect free kick measures while for Hardraade, a free kick straight on goal by David Beckham (yes, you read that right, their free kick taker is indeed a midfielder named David Beckham) was warded off by Chuck Kenyon. The second half didn’t really see any goals but was dominated by Sensi and extra time failed to bear fruit so it went down to penalties. Both sides missed their first penalties but both then found the net with consummate ease. However, Jeremy Daley’s penalty miss then gave Hardraade the chance to go through to the semis, but only if Nigerian defender Obaseke Erebowale converted his penalty. Fortunately for Hardraade, he managed to beat Chuck Kenyon and send Sensi out of the competition, being named the Man of the Match in the process. Real Madrid were the only top flight side left in the competition now and would probably be fancying their chances given that all the opposition left in the competition was Division 2 or worse.
The other quarter final was completely dominated by Team Bring It, who restricted Serrinha Academy to just three attempts as opposed to Team Bring It’s 11. The final score ended up being 3-1 but with Bring It in the semis, it was set to be a memorable season.
The Semi Finals were as follows:
Team Bring It vs. Reservoir Cats
Hardraade vs. C.F Real Madrid
So the Dream League cup would be going to a Swede, a Romanian, a Norwegian or a Mauritian. Could Nishtil become the first Mauritian to win a major trophy on X11? Would Anna_cz emulate the achievements of her brother by taking home the cup? Could Naesgaard’s 25 seasons in the game be rewarded or would C.F Real Madrid claim the cup again? In the first semi, Reservoir Cats took the lead through Givanildo Souza but Team Bring it bounced back to equalise through Vladislav Tsymbalar. Who said strikers were pointless? It was however, a couple of mastermind substitutions that swung the game in Team Bring Its favour. Nishtil subbed on both Dennis Wondel and Gustavo Figueiroa and both scored to dump Reservoir Cats out of the catflap and out at the semi final stage. Hard luck for Anna_cz and her troops but they can take pride at having got so far in the cup in the first place. They would be facing C.F Real Madrid, who ended Hardraade’s hopes in the other semi, but only through a narrow 2-1 win. As time was running out, Alvaro Morata scored a dramatic late winner to give Alexmakerulzz’s team the chance of becoming the first team since Nearly There to do the Dream League double.
The Final
The 30th Dream League Cup Final would be between C.F. Real Madrid of the Dream League and Team Bring It of Division 2c. This was Team Bring Its first appearance in the Dream League cup final having previously never gotten past the 8th round of the cup while C.F Real Madrid were appearing in their second cup final. Ominously they’d won their only other final and with their team strength were the clear favourites for this match. Real Madrid were also chasing the League and Cup double having been involved in a four way title battle with Broken Foundation, Golden Goal and later on, JC Sunbeams all season. In celebration of this being the Dream League Cup’s 30th final there was a longer build up to the game than usual as the league had a chance to reflect back on previous cup finals. Vintage images of South Hooligans’ double winning triumph were being played which were followed by images of every team hoisting the Dream League Cup from the last 29 seasons. Blasts from the past like two time winners Dulka Prague Awaykit, Danubius Galati, three time winners PF Stratocasters who were the only other team apart from South Hooligans to do the double, Ringe Des Feuers ending said club’s dominance in the cup by directly beating them, Ricohs Roar claiming their second Dream League cup before a multitude of winners followed like AS Ploiesti, TBBT/Queen Seon Deok, Zacgold FC, JC Sunbeams and recently, C.F Real Madrid and Broken Foundation’s cup triumphs.
C.F Real Madrid’s journey to the final started against dragon ball z. They then knocked out FC Twente, Useless FC, FC SPORTING, S.P.D Odivelas, Bannockburn, Barbarians FC, Noblesse Oblige, Real Subbuteo and Hardraade FC to take their place in the final. Team Bring It meanwhile started against Division 7 side heirup fc. They then proceeded to knock out another Division 7 side in Motown Detroit, Division 5:29’s KS Hetman, Division 4l’s Manchester City USA, Division 5:8’s Taz Devils FC and Division 5:26’s Heisenberg FC before a tough run of knockouts against FK Partizan Beograd, FK Crvena Zvezda, Serrinha Academy and Reservoir Cats saw them make the final on the opposite side of the field to Real Madrid.
Alexmakerulzz and Nishtil were smartly dressed for the occasion as they prepared their teams for the final. Benjamin Gerrbrand and Alírio Avelar led out the teams for this massive occasion. Real Madrid had Aaron Ramsey suspended for the cup final after he was booked against JC Sunbeams having already received two yellow cards. This left them with midfield problems going into the cup final, with a full strength midfield Real Madrid are deadly but if anyone goes missing, they often find themselves with problems and this was likely to let Team Bring It into this game.:
1 GK John-Olof Kilian
4 CB Christian Parker
5 CB Benjamin Gerrbrand
3 CB Jez Potter
22 DM Birkir Guðfinnur
19 DM Jose-Maria Merino
7 RM Tatsuru Tagusagawa
10 AM Amilcar Agrelos
11 LM Alf Cavendish
9 CF Arnold Normlund
23 CF Alvin Stegeman
6 DF David Luis
20 FW Alvaro Morata
Team Bring It meanwhile had no major injury concerns, although a lot of players on last warnings, and their team was as follows:
1 GK Maximiano Vilhena
23 RB Alírio Avelar (captain)
4 CB Henrik Svensson
6 CB Diego Ribas
3 LB Tiago Bizalhão
17 DM Nikita Tselikov
8 DM Rikard Sundfors
7 RM Milan Vladomin
10 AM Pere Guillermo
11 LM Donagh McEnroe
9 CF Vladislav Tsymbalar
12 GK Albert Royale
2 DF Benjamin Hedblom
16 MF Elias Malvas
28 MF Gustavo Figueiroa
18 FW Dennis Wondel
Irre Levent was your referee for this game and it was Stegeman and Normlund who kicked the game off. I hope the fans didn’t turn up late to the match because they missed an important piece of action. In just the first minute of the game, Alvin Stegeman’s cross found Alf Cavendish, who produced a lobbed header to send the ball over Vilhena and give Real Madrid the early lead. If anyone thought this was going to be the start of a massacre though, they were duly wrong.
Because the next few chances fell to Team Bring It’s Pere Guillermo. After a toe kick on goal failed to trouble Kilian, a breakaway from Rikard Sundfors pass did. Guillermo was left with the simple task of hitting it past Kilian to level the scores. Team Bring It were going to make this a contest.
An 18th minute yellow card for Tatsuru Tagusagawa was followed by a bicycle kick by Rikard Sundfors 11 minutes later but Kilian was equal to his efforts and easily saved it. That was all the action for the first half and it was clearly going to be a very close and competitive cup final. But there could only be one winner, who would it be?
With nothing really happening at the start of the second half, Real Madrid made a defensive change by bringing on David Luis. Both sides were struggling to exert themselves on this tie and it was looking like a draw with extra time was the most likely outcome. Team Bring It decided to make a midfield chance by bringing on Elias Malvas, who at 23 years old is shaping up to be one of the brightest up and coming talents in the Dream League, could his younger and fitter legs help freshen up the Team Bring It midfield and give them the edge? They had the first chance following the change with a header by Vladislav Tsymbalar but unfortunately for the TBI fans he missed the bar. This proved to be his last action of the game as he was substituted for Dennis Wondel. With just 13 minutes left this was a far closer affair than many could have predicted and it was anyone’s game. Could anybody score the winner? Or would there be extra time? Would C.F. Real Madrid’s smaller squad cost them in the long run against Team Bring It who were able to make 3 substitutions to their will? No goal came in the last few minutes so the final was heading to extra time.
Extra time kicked off and Arnold Normlund showed TBI that just because they had fresher legs on the pitch, they still were going to have a challenge to win but his volley from a distance was close to the crossbar and not really troubling for Vilhena. Rikard Sundfors almost had an embarrassing moment when he almost put through his own net but thankfully Vilhena was there to save him and ensure that he wouldn’t leave with a red face. And so the first half of extra time was over and the score remained 1-1. Could anyone score a winner? Would there be penalties?
Alf Cavendish threw a spanner in the works 3 minutes after the start of Extra Time; he was set up by Jose Maria Merino and unleashed a piledriver into the back of the net to make it 2-1 to Real Madrid. The Madrid fans were going berserk, they would be on their way to their second Dream League Cup title. But it wasn’t over yet. Team Bring It have been magnificent in this match and really gave the Dream League giants a game. The game looked to be over though as Alf Cavendish showed what a truly special player he is by pile driving another into the back of the net to make it 3-1 and now the stakes were really on for Team Bring It. Was subbing off the experience for youth a mistake? Ultimately, Team Bring It had no answer and the full time whistle blew. C.F. Real Madrid had won their second cup title in three seasons, a great achievement for this group of players and they still had the chance to do the double, albeit an outside chance on the final day. Full credit to Team Bring It, they really made Real Madrid work for it but unfortunately they didn’t have anyone like Alf Cavendish, who single-handily won the final for Alexmakerulzz’s team.
Cup Stats:
Top points scorer: Alf Cavendish (C.F Real Madrid) – 22
Top goal scorer: Jeremias Paco (FC Bucuresti), Izzy Klass (FC Sensi) – both 15
Top assists: Yves Ntona (Striking Sputniks) – 11
MVP: Carl-Otto Arlig (Reservoir Cats), Benjamin Gerrbrand (C.F Real Madrid) – both 6

Benjamin Gerrbrand was on hand to hoist the Dream League Cup into the air and there was to be much celebration throughout the night. The Real Madrid players celebrated so hard with their manager that unfortunately we were unable to get an interview with him.
And so another season in the Dream League comes to a close. As the Dream League celebrates 30 seasons, it celebrates it with one of its best ever seasons. Both winners in the end were previous cup winners but there’s no doubt that JC Sunbeams and C.F Real Madrid are two of the Dream League’s finest teams.
This unfortunately also looks likely to be my last review for the Dream League. The upcoming Xpert Daily revamp if it goes ahead will mean the Daily as you know it will be a thing of the past. If this is to be my last review, thank you to everyone in the Dream League top flight for playing out two cracking seasons that made for great reports. Worry not for next season though, we will still be covering the Dream League. More details to follow.
