Major domination
It was time for Whitecaps Utd, Smooth Criminal and AC Azeitao United to stand up and be counted. If EragonOP and Lmags wanted to make years of work count, they had to beat SparkaSpring. Likewise, Rachmed was looking to bag his first prize in the Major League since his old side Ottman Empire won the Major League cup and beating SparkaSpring just might be the only way to do it. Easier said than done though.

ROUND 8:

SparkaSpring FC 3-0 AC Azeitao United (Mutch ‘7, Guterres ’19, Side OG ’51)
Loco y Orgulloso 0-3 Djur i Hatt FC (Aragones ’60, Berja ’63, Geni ’77)
Corleone FC 1-0 Holsby Brunners (Tambellini ’27)
Whitecaps Utd 0-1 Smooth Criminal (Fjordsjo ’17)

Sparka completed the double over Azeitao by a clear 3 goals with Mutch, Guterres and a Chris Side Own goal securing all three points for SparkaSpring. Struggling Holsby Brunners lost 1-0 to Corleone FC while Whitecaps Utd fell to Smooth Criminals’ player of the season, Valter Fjordsjo. Who would have thought that a striker would be Criminal’s best player this season?

ROUND 9

Djur i Hatt FC 1-2 Holsby Brunners (Hutton ’85) (Ivan ’54, Spiteri ’68)
Smooth Criminal 1-1 Corleone FC (Fjordsjo ’29) (Engblom ’90)
AC Azeitao United 5-0 Loco y Orgulloso (Sandh ‘3, Nascimento ’11, Side ’13, Marcolin ’34, Dovblom ‘78
Whitecaps Utd 0-2 SparkaSpring FC (Ferm ’74, Heidenreich ’93)

The dream’s over Whitecaps fans, you’re efforts in the league don’t look to be coming to anything, Sparka effectively ended Whitecaps’ title hopes with a 2-0 win thanks to Anders Ferm and Mark Heidenreich. Holsby Brunners meanwhile brushed aside last week’s defeat to Corleone as they won away to Djur i Hatt. Midseason signing Shaun Spiteri has given the Brunners a much needed free kick taker. You may recognise Spiteri as he was in the Kimmi Comets side that won the Power League cup in Season 25 and subsequently took part in the XCL and he scored what turned out to be the winning goal for Holsby Brunners.

Elsewhere, young midfielder Emil Sandh scored his first ever career goal as AC Azeitao United thrashed Loco y Orgulloso 5-0 to wipe away the pain suffered in the double header against SparkaSpring. Chris Side scored for the second consecutive game, but this time at the right end of the pitch. 5-0 winners, 5 different goal scorers.

Corleone, buoyed by their win over Holsby Brunners, managed to secure a 1-1 draw away at Smooth Criminal. The Criminal goal was scored by, yes, Valter Fjordsjo who is looking like one of the signings of the season… and he wasn’t even playing up front in this match. Instead he was part of a 5 man defence but that free kick means he was at this point the second highest goalscorer in the Major League, only behind SparkaSpring’s Fabiano Guterres. Who would have thought that a Smooth Criminal striker would be among the top goalscorers in the division?

ROUND 10:

SparkaSpring FC 2-0 Corleone FC (Guterres ’18 ’63)
AC Azeitao United 2-3 Whitecaps Utd (Raffaelli ’16, Marcolin ’71) (Lis ’81 Johnston ’89, Pedras ‘93)
Holsby Brunners 2-0 Loco y Orgulloso (Pinho ‘3, Keaton ’32)
Smooth Criminal 1-0 Djur i Hatt FC (Garcia ’90)

Sparka could go 10 points clear at the top of the Major League if they beat Corleone and both Smooth Criminal and AC Azeitao United failed to win. Svajo decided to rest Joshua Routhledge this time round after losing his keeper to an injury against the same opponent earlier in the season so it was Chuck Nixon who was given the gloves. Sparka won 2-0 and Fabiano Guterres scored both goals, putting Sparka on 28 points. Over to you Rachmed and Lmags…

Lmags Junior was in goal for AC Azeitao’s game against Whitecaps, clearly Azeitao felt that Sparka had already won the league and that gametime for youths was now more important with the XCL starting. Nevertheless, Jorge Raffaelli gave them the lead before Azeitao’s talisman Dante Marcolin curled in another trademark free kick. However, Azeitao were to throw it all away in the last 10 minutes as Mihalache Lis scored in the 81st minute. A dramatic late equaliser by substitute Freddie Johnston was only foreshadowing Graciano Pedras’ 93rd minute winner. What a dramatic game.

Smooth Criminal meanwhile struggled to break down Djur i Hatt FC, but Graciano Garcia’s late free kick sealed all three points and kept the gap between them and SparkaSpring to just 7 points. Unfortunately you don’t get any prizes for 2nd place but that appears to be the only thing left to fight for in the Major League right now. Meanwhile at the Havrebergsvallen Holsby Brunners beat Loco y Orgulloso 2-0 to move out of the relegation zone at the expense of Corleone FC. Loco are now 10 points off safety and will be relegated from the Major League next round if they lose, which is pretty likely.

ROUND 11:

Corleone FC 0-2 AC Azeitao United (Celades ’51, Nascimento ’70)
Djur i Hatt FC 1-4 SparkaSpring FC (Basinas ’72) (Guterres ’13 ’83 ‘88, Bondi ’48)
Holsby Brunners 1-0 Smooth Criminal (Buckley PEN ’30)
Loco y Orgulloso 0-2 Whitecaps Utd (Turienzo ’33, Sargent PEN ’70)

Fun fact, did you know that the motto on the SparkaSpring crest is Swedish for “The GodTeam”? At least, that’s what Google Translate would have me believe and they could truly become immortals in this round as they were just one win away from securing the  title with three games to spare. Djur i Hatt offered no experience, instead deciding to give some gametime to their youth goalkeeper Horner Kippling. Fabiano Guterres got the party started by giving them the lead in the 13th minute and the away fans were  excited, they were on course for their third successive Major League title. The cup may have bypassed them this time but they continue to pick up the silverware. Bondi doubled the lead in the 48th minute but Sparka’s celebrations were slightly diluted by Prokopis Basinas pulling a goal back for the Djur with their first chance of the game. It didn’t matter, Guterres scored again and Sparka were 3-1 up. 5 minutes later he completed his hattrick and a remarkable season which means that with three games to spare, Sparka were Major League champions. And they could yet go the entire season unbeaten, now there’s a scary prospect.

So the season was now over for Smooth Criminal and AC Azeitao United but they could still play a part in deciding who would go down. AC Azeitao were away to Corleone while Smooth Criminal were away to Holsby. Corleone’s day went badly as they went 2-0 down to AC Azeitão but it was a different story for Holsby as they beat Smooth Criminal to go 5 points clear of the drop zone. It’s been a poor season for last season’s runners up and the perennial Major League team, but a late run of form might just save them. Whitecaps meanwhile closed in on safety with a 2-0 win over Loco y Orgulloso. This result combined with Holsby’s win over Smooth Criminal meant that Loco y Orgulloso were relegated from the Major League after just one season, but after the midseason decision to rebuild, this was always going to be inevitable

ROUND 12:

SparkaSpring 1-1 Holsby Brunners (Mutch ’90) (Buckley ‘9)
AC Azeitao United 2-1 Djur i Hatt FC (Marcolin ’49 ’51) (Basinas ’44)
Corleone FC 1-2 Whitecaps Utd (Hackmann ’24) (Pedras ’75, Perez Molina ’83)
Loco y Orgulloso 0-3 Smooth Criminal (Fjordsjo ‘9, Browall ’61, Luis Caires ’86)

With the title now secure but Sparka out of the cup, the only thing they had left to play for was attempting to go the entire season unbeaten, but the bulk of the action was now with the relegation battle with two teams still to join Loco y Orgulloso in relegation. Holsby Brunners had a very hard game away to a SparkaSpring side looking to go unbeaten. But Holsby’s current side contain players who’ve won the Major League title before so they were no mugs and Burt Buckley gave them the lead in the first half. Holsby led until the 90th minute when a dramatic late winner from substitute Josh Mutch preserved Sparka’s unbeaten record. A win would have been priceless for Holsby but it was far from a disaster. Their fate now rested in the hands of Azeitao and Corleone.

With Azeitao fighting out an XCL campaign but with nothing to play for in the league, it was no surprise that 5 teenagers along with the youth goalkeeper were out against Djur i Hatt. Djur were in danger and needed to win this game, them and Corleone both needed to close the gap on Holsby Brunners but both were due to face each other on the final day. If Djur didn’t win however they would be relegated from the top flight. Basinas sent the away fans into raptures going into half time amid chants of “We are Staying Up”. But after the break, two quick free kicks from Dante Marcolin put Azeitao into the lead and the Portuguese team dominated the rest of the game. It wasn’t going to happen for them, Djur i Hatt were relegated from the Major League after three seasons as a top flight team. The team is hardly old and derelict though so Herr.h will have the chance to bring them back into the top flight next season.

Corleone were fighting for their lives and took the lead through Franck Hackmann but they then conceded twice to Whitecaps Utd to leave them on the verge of relegation. They would need a massive swing in goal difference to stay up now so despite a brush with the drop this season, Holsby looks to have lived to survive another day. While already relegated Loco y Orgulloso went down 2-0 to Smooth Criminal and everything looks to have been wrapped up already…

ROUND 13:

Whitecaps Utd 3-0 Djur i Hatt (Pedras ’40 ’46, Ronaldo ’84)
Corleone FC 2-0 Loco y Orgulloso (Dante ’50 Hackmann ‘86)
Holsby Brunners 5-0 AC Azeitao United (Norberg ’43 ’84 ’89, Spiteri ’57, Clist ‘93
Smooth Criminal 0-0 SparkaSpring FC (Hampel ‘1)

With Corleone playing the already relegated Loco, the pressure was on Holsby Brunners to beat AC Azeitao United and stay up in the Major League, relegating Corleone in the process. The Brunners fans went into ecstasy when Bert-Ola Norberg gave them the lead before halftime, before Shaun Spiteri gave them a 2-0 lead. The game turned into an emphatic win when Bert-Ola Norberg and Callum Clist scored 3 more goals between them in the last 10 minutes so despite Corleone’s best efforts, they were relegated after one season in the Major League top flight. The emphatic Holsby Brunners revival in the second half of the season suggests they might be right back at the sharp end of things next season.

Over to Smooth Stadium now where SparkaSpring could take a giant step to going the entire season unbeaten if they avoided defeat against Rachmed’s 2nd placed team. They had come into this on the back of a 1-1 draw against Holsby but they did more than draw against Smooth Criminal, they won emphatically. From the moment Olgierd Hampel turned into the Smooth Criminal net Sparka were rampant and two goals from Mark Heidenreich sealed a 3-0 win. With only bottom of the table Loco y Orgulloso, this SparkaSpring side could make quite some history in this league.

ROUND 14:

AC Azeitao United 0-0 Smooth Criminal
Djur i Hatt FC 0-0 Corleone FC
Holsby Brunners 3-0 Whitecaps Utd (Sveinbjornsson ’62, Pinho ’74, Buckley ‘88)
Loco y Orgulloso 1-2 SparkaSpring FC (Penotti OG ’20) (Bondi ’17, Mutch ‘41)

So with the title battle and relegation battle already decided this was really a dead rubber round of fixtures, especially with bottom of the table Loco y Orgulloso  playing a SparkaSpring side trying to go the entire season unbeaten. An early effort from Tonton was disallowed before Josh Mutch gave Sparka the lead, only for Ciro Penotti to equalise with an own goal. Bondi put Sparka back in front before Tonton was sent off. Loco then had a few chances but with their squad, never really threatened Sparka, Svajo had done it, a 3rd consecutive league title and this one was the most dominant of the lot, SparkaSpring never lost a league game during the entire season.

Second place went to Smooth Criminal despite their draw with AC Azeitao United, because Holsby won 3-0 against 4th placed Whitecaps Utd who could have gone 2nd. Just 2 points separated 2nd from 4th in the end while SparkaSpring ended the season on 38 points. Relegated duo Djur i Hatt and Corleone played out a rather meaningless match which ended in a predictably dull 0-0 draw.

So the final standings are:

Season stats:
Top points scorer: Fabiano Guterres (SparkaSpring FC), Dante Marcolin (AC Azeitao United – both 12
Top goal scorer: Fabiano Guterres (SparkaSpring FC) – 12
Top assists: Erfan Tonton (SparkaSpring FC) – 6
Most yellow cards: Burt Buckley (Holsby Brunners) – 4
MVP: Fabiano Guterres (SparkaSpring FC) - 13

So, Corleone, Djur i Hatt and Loco y Orgulloso were heading down. In their place, we have debutants Spartak Marktagan who secured their 5th consecutive divisional title, Viljusa Utd, the team who knocked SparkaSpring out of the cup last season and Paradox FC, the team of Major League Admin Panxxx who won promotion via the play-offs by beating former top flight side BHF BK

With Svajo having given many an interview to the XD, we thought we’d freshen it up a bit for this round. Instead of interviewing Svajo, we thought we’d give a few short interviews to several within the Major League top flight and teams that are going to be in the top flight next season. We start with the manager of the most successful Major League team, Holsby Brunners’ daniel_r

XD: Over 18 seasons ago, you began a long rebuild of your former multiple title winning Holsby Brunners side with the aim of winning the XCL. In most leagues your side would be considered impressive, but after winning two titles you’ve ended up in the same division as SparkaSpring.  Are you disappointed that your side has to share the same division as Sparka?

DR: It was pretty obvious that SparkaSpring would be a dominant of the league long before they reached the top division. They had a team full of talent and the team value was way higher than all other teams in Major League. I am not disappointed to have such a giant to compete against, I am happy we won two titles before the SparkaSpring-era began. It was only a matter of when it would start.

XD: Last season you ran Sparka very close, indeed it wasn’t until the final game before the title race finally looked sown up for them, but this season they are on the verge of going the entire season unbeaten while you needed a late run of form to survive in the Major League. What do you put your struggles this season down to?

DR: After about half of the season it was pretty obvious that our best chance of winning something would be to win the cup title. We got pretty close but lost the cup final on overtime and that was a disappointment because I think that we might have a quite competitive team in the coming seasons. After the poor start of the season, our aim in the league has been to stay in the top division this season.

XD: Are you good friends with Svajo?

DR: I don’t really know him privately, but I do have great respect for him. As far as I can see he is always correct and he seems to be a nice guy.

XD: What were your feelings when SparkaSpring became the first Major League side since Shamrock Rovers to win the XCL?

DR: It was about time.

XD: Finally, when Sparka were knocked out of the cup this season, did you feel you had a realistic chance to win it?

DR: Well, at least our chances didn’t seem to decrease, but as mentioned earlier it didn’t really help us in the end.

XD: Thank you

DR: Thanks.

Next up, bottom placed manager Robbo_the_Red, manager of Loco y Orgulloso, a team who have faced SparkaSpring on many occasions, was tracked down at the pub as we looked to squeeze in another interview.

XD: Since taking over Loco y Orgulloso you’ve faced SparkaSpring 4 times prior to the mid-season rebuild, winning 3 of these encounters and drawing 1, with the first defeat coming in the Major League cup final. Do you consider yourself unlucky to have taken over a team that has peaked at the same time as Sparka?

Robbo: Yeah, that should be 'losing' three not winning three. I was very happy to have taken an away point at the start of the season however, my vastly superior tactics were formidable and really I should have won, but there you go, I was robbed. Oh, and Svajo forgot to set his as I recall, so I guess that could have had something to do with it.

Of course it was frustrating to have taken Loco from division 5 to the top only to hit a Sparka brick wall, but I had plenty of good times on the way, it was a marvellous achievement and I congratulate myself for it <applause>.

XD: What was the main motivation behind the mid-season decision to sell off the team and begin a rebuild?

Robbo: My players were dissing me. I lost the dressing room on the back of a rebellion led by John Terry. Ok, it wasn't John Terry but he kinda looked like him. Ugly, yet slightly droopy and effeminate at the same time. No one does that to me, no one.

XD: How long do you think SparkaSpring will be competitive for before the team dies off, if it does die off?

Robbo: I think Svajo should carry on for years to come. We all love Sparka and bow before them. I look forward to being teabagged on the last day of the season.

XD: Finally, a few high ranking managers have criticised Svajo’s choice of tactics.  What do you make of this and given Sparka’s strength, does this really matter that much?

Robbo: Who am I to question the Overlord? He's built a squad of angels and doesn't need to try to win. I'd like to see him go 4-2-4 long balls now and again though, just to test himself.

In a slightly less run down location we interviewed EragonOP, manager of top flight side Whitecaps Utd

XD: This was your first season in the Major League top flight and at first it looked like you might up there, but then you had to face SparkaSpring in the league. What were your feelings going into this match?

EragonOP: I knew that I shouldn’t stand a chance against SparkaSpring with my team so I tried to go for a tie. I knew that if I give SparkaSpring a chance he’s likely to score. I lost the chance with a total of 1-7 and the goals with 0-5 divide on two meetings.

XD: You took over this club in Division 2 after it spent a long spell in Division 1, so you’re a pretty new face in the Major League. Were you aware that you might end up facing SparkaSpring prior to applying for the job?

EragonOP: When I applied for the job, I saw a team with great potential, a team that with some effort might make it up to Major League. I was aware that I might end up facing SparkaSpring but I didn’t think that it would be so soon. I thought that with this team I would maybe end up facing SparkaSpring in my fifth season and not in my third.

XD: A lot has been made over Svajo’s tactics being predictable. If you were in charge of SparkaSpring, would you do anything differently?

EragonOP: Svajo has a team that makes him best nearly regardless in what tactic he would use, he can afford to be predictable. If I were in Svajo’s shoes I would try to make my tactics in a way that wouldn’t be as predictable. But as you can see no one stood a chance against Svajo this season so regardless what I say he knows his team better than I do and knows how to make it a winning team in nearly every single game. I can only congratulate Svajo on another good season and wish him luck in the next!

XD: Thank you and good luck for next season

EragonOP: Thank you!

And finally, a team who will be in the Major League top flight next season, Division 1b champions Viljusa Utd and their manager Dram1a. They will have to face Sparka next season

XD: You’ve just been promoted to the top flight at a time when SparkaSpring have been dominating the Major League; however, you were also the team that knocked SparkaSpring out of the cup. Does that kind of result give you the confidence to be able to compete with them?

D1: First of all, I would like to thank you for this conversation and it is a big thing for me to even be in the same sentence with great team SparkaSprings. SparkaSpring is probable most dominated team of xperteleven and it make it almost impossible to make threat but you have to believe in your team and hope for the best!

XD: Is having a team like SparkaSpring competing in the top flight good or bad for the Major League?

D1: In one hand you have great team that represent our league in Champions League but on other side, you don't have a much chance to compete with them in Major League and a moral of the other teams is on lower level and that make things more difficult.

XD: As for Viljusa Utd, your goalkeeper Elisha Scott will turn 34 next season, meaning that there aren’t that many seasons left before he starts declining in skill. With Scott in goal can Viljusa Utd be the team that really challenges SparkaSpring for the title?

D1: Scott is probable most important player of my team and his contribution is immeasurable but I believe that every player is replaceable. I'm going game by game and we will see what we can expect. There are many great teams in elite division and you can't know are you going to be in top or bottom 3 teams! Last season was the same, but great start of it and high moral level of my players and myself lead my team to the great success!

XD: Thank you and good luck next season in the Major League

D1: Thank you very much!

Cup Round-up

Round 6:

With SparkaSpring continuing to roll on in the cup, you have to wonder if anyone could stop them. Albarraque certainly couldn’t and Sparka were into the next round. AC Azeitao United also continued safely through, as did Smooth Criminal so the three best teams in the Major League top flight this season were all safely through. The round ran to script until you get down to 332nd seeds Arpool FC. Arpool are a Division 5 side but beat Division 2c side Dinamo Delta Tulcea with a dramatic extra time goal. Arpool were into Round 7 for the first time in their history, beating their previous record of Round 6. Red Warriors B Team reached Round 7 after disposing of 140th seeds Blarand Utd while 76th seeds Che Guevara of Division 3a fell to another Division 5 side in Dallas United 2. All the top flight teams made it safely into Round 7.

Round 7:

SparkaSpring’s victory in Round 7 over Cagalican United was their 56th consecutive match in the cup, an amazing record by any standards and Sparka were continuing to look unstoppable in the cup. There was a massive cup tie this round between Whitecaps Utd and AC Azeitao United so a big gun would be going out. It wasn’t a particularly entertaining match but Hal Sargent ensured AC Azeitao United’s progress would end here. There was another massive match too, as Holsby Brunners and Smooth Criminal faced each other yet again. Again a cagey affair but Callum Clist, playing in his natural midfield position rather than as a makeshift striker which he has been deployed in often this season, fired home a shot from long range to leave Dag Angeras stranded. Smooth Criminal will point to Gregor Gordon’s effort being disallowed but Holsby were good value for their win and ensured Rachmed’s attempts to become the first manager to win the Major League cup with two different teams was over for this season.

Paradox FC beat out Stevie G 2 with goals from Chettle, Yalcin and Kirkland, but last season’s quarter finalists FC Mourinhos weren’t to get so far this time. Viljusa Utd ended their cup run thanks to goals from Gruffyd Cross, Chris Brownlie and Fitim Memetaj. They would claim an even bigger scalp in the next round. Svalbard BK, last 16 from last season and currently plying their trade in Division 1a went out to Antero Guerreiro’s effort, meaning PFC Belgrade were in the last 16. Quarter Finalists two seasons ago, could they replicate their feat?

Red Warriors B Team continued to impress as they knocked out 102nd seed The Smiths, who were having a great cup run themselves being a Division 5 team. Elsewhere, FC St. Pauli striker Guti Exteberria came up against his old club Helpnessless Blues. It was an unhappy reunion for the striker as despite his team dominating the game, they could not simply convert aside from a disallowed goal in the 92nd minute by Djordje Puaca. Helpnessless Blues went on to win the subsequent penalty shootout and the fallout was long. St. Pauli manager DMSX11 commented “Robbed!!” to which his opposite number Sarcasm-o-tron “Jesus Christ, man, that was unlucky as hell. :D” We do not detect any sarcasm in that statement. He then followed up with “Thanks, man, you should have progressed, I was sure I was gonna lose this one as I have injuries and just sold one of the players as I'm about to overhaul the team. That's why it was an even bigger shock, especially when you look at the game stats. :)” DMSX11 responded with “The game has a weird engine lol”

Former cup finalists F.C. Radauti ended Mersey Red’s cup run with Jonas Alcaraz’s shot after a corner in extra time sending them into the next round. Top flight side Djur I Hatt however fell to Division 2 side Jonakers FF. The all Division 2 clash between Thundera ThunderTanks and Forest Forever ended in the Nottingham based club reaching the last 16 while Division 4 side NK Tresnjevka knocked out 27th seeds FC Klawss Rast. German club 2.FC GERSTESECK got the better of S C Lamego on penalties while Dallas United 2’s magnificent cup run ended in the 7th round with defeat to Pardalitos do Choupal. You would think that the other Division 5 side left in would also go out, but amazingly Arpool made it into the last 16. For a Division 5 side to go so far is quite an achievement. They dumped Division 3 side FC LIVERPOOL REDS out of the cup and Andre Schlurre’s missed penalty proved to be absolutely crucial. BHF BK were the last team to progress after knocking BLACK505 out of the cup

Round of Last 16:

So then, these are your final 16 teams:

SparkaSpring FC vs. Viljusa United
Paradox F.C vs. F.C Radauti
2.FC GERSTESECK vs. Holsby Brunners
Red Warriors B Team vs. PFC Belgrade
Jonakers FF vs. Whitecaps Utd
BHF BK vs. Forest Forever
Pardalitos do Choupal vs. Helplessness Blues
Arpool FC vs. NK Tresnjevka

Right then, let’s see how the action went down…

SparkaSpring FC 1-2. Viljusa United (Rawlinson ’34) (Olsen ‘7, Cross ’43)
Paradox F.C 0-1 F.C Radauti (Lage ‘111)
2.FC GERSTESECK 0-2 Holsby Brunners (Clist ‘6, Norberg ’49)
Red Warriors B Team 0-1 PFC Belgrade (Josemi ‘120)
Jonakers FF 1-3 Whitecaps Utd (Backstedt ’32) (Sargent ’45, Lis ’54, Pursall ’69)
BHF BK 0-2 Forest Forever (Stenberg ‘3 ’83)
Pardalitos do Choupal 0-1 Helplessness Blues (Lentini ’20)
Arpool FC 2-1 NK Tresnjevka (Sjolund ‘4, Friberg ’90) (Bursic ’85)

Only one place to start. The magnificent cup run of SparkaSpring was over, they were stunned by 10th seeds Viljusa United who bettered their efforts of last season against the most unlikely opponents. Olsen and Cross will be heroes forever more in Viljusa’s history.

Holsby Brunners made it safely through to the next round with a 2-0 win over 2.FC GERSTESECK through Callum Clist and Bert-Ola Norberg, F.C Radauti made a strong case for another cup title as in extra time, Antao Lange’s dramatic 111th minute winner knocked Paradox F.C out. Whitecaps Utd ended Jonakers FF’s run thanks to Sargent, Lis and Pursall, BHF BK were knocked out by Forest Forever, Red Warriors’ B Team’s cup run sadly came to an end against PFC Belgrade, while Helpnessless Blues also won their cup tie but the biggest shock was Division 5 side Arpool FC making the semi-finals. Yes, that’s right, a Division 5 side was in the semi-finals of the Major League cup, incredible progress.

Quarter Finals:

Holsby Brunners 1-0 Viljusa United (Norberg ’59)
Helplessness Blues 0-3 F.C Radauti (Sandin ’49 Costa ’54 Galpin ’84)
Whitecaps Utd 2-3 PFC Belgrade (Johnston ’69, Pedras ’71) (Kamikaze ’43 ’85, Kieft ’69)
Arpool FC 0-3 Forest Forever (Luz ’26, Solbakken ’31, Tryggstad ‘47)

After their heroics in knocking SparkaSpring out of the cup, giant killers and Division 1b leaders Viljusa United had another giant standing in their way. A team not as strong as Sparka but prestigious in success  anyway, Holsby Brunners. Viljusa could not repeat their heroics however and fell at the quarter finals thanks to a goal by Bert-Ola Norberg. But Viljusa can be proud of their efforts and their goalkeeper, Elisha Scott has had a great season. The much travelled goalkeeper who has played for at least five different clubs and had his biggest success as first choice goalkeeper for Tug4Zon3 Elite when he helped them to win the Final League failed to add to his honours cabinet with current club Viljusa and he turns 34 next season.

Division 3’s Helplessness Blues saw their cup run ended at the hands of former finalists F.C Radauti. One of the strongest teams left in the cup destroyed Helplessness Blues with goals from Karl-Oscar Sandin, Eduardo Costa and Thurston Galpin. Costa only came on as a substitute for Cristian Nitescu in the second half but he didn’t take long to get on the scoresheet. Whitecaps Utd saw PFC Belgrade take the lead just before half time thanks to the amazingly named Miroku Kamikaze. Thankfully he didn’t seriously injure himself when scoring the goal and was able to take to the field for the second half. Ruud Kieft doubled the lead for Belgrade but two minutes later Freddie Johnston pulled one back from a corner. Graciano Pedras’ brilliant free kick then brought Whitecaps back into it just four minutes later. Kamikaze however restored Belgrade’s lead before Oguz Bilazer killed off Whitecaps’ cup hopes to leave them with nothing to play for. For Belgrade however the semi finals beckoned, the Division 2 side had claimed a top flight scalp.

Finally, Arpool FC had a tough task against Forest Forever in the quarter finals, but they had done brilliantly to get so far in the tournament in the first place. Forest were too good however and raced into a 2-0 lead through Xavier Luz and a Simen Solbakken free kick. Georg Tryggstad added to the scoreline to send Forest into the semis but it was by no means a bad effort from Arpool. So it was Holsby Brunners, F.C Radauti, PFC Belgrade and Forest Forever into the semi finals, one of them would win the Major League cup but which one?

Semi Finals:

Holsby Brunners 1-1 Forest Forever (4-2 on penalties) (Norberg ’53) (Nardi PEN ‘1)
PFC Belgrade 1-0 F.C. Radauti (Kieft ’85)

Holsby and Radauti were kept apart in the cup draw which wasn’t great news for Forest Forever. Both them and PFC Belgrade were just one step away from the final though and having fought so hard to get there they might as well have given it a go.

It is probably one of the most heartbreaking things on Xpert to go out of the cup at the semi final stage because of all the effort put in to get so far, so none of these four sides wanted to go out.

The slightyl more exciting contest was Holsby Brunners vs. Forest Forever. Forest made the perfect start when in the first minute of the game, Xavier Luz was brought down in the penalty area by Ernesto Bortuluzzi. Tomas Nardi had the task of trying to take down Holsby’s imperious goalkeeper Ingvar Kask but it was a task he completed effortlessly. 1-0 to Forest Forever, was a shock going to be on the cards? Forest held onto their lead past halftime and were matching Holsby Brunners for chances. But just after halftime, Bert-Ola Norberg equalised and the Brunners were back in it. Could Holsby snatch a winner? Well, Forest weren’t out of this one yet, they were giving Holsby a game and inside 90 minutes, neither side could find a winner. We were going to extra time.

Extra time passed and chances from Burt Buckley and Theo Acheson went begging. Sensing penalties were likely, Holsby brought on Bruce Mimms for Murray Keaton and Shaun Spiteri for Callum Clist, presumably to have more skilled players on the pitch in a penalty shootout. But it very nearly cost them as Arkadiusz Redlowski put the ball into the net in the 116th minute of the game. Forest Forever looked like heading to the cup final… oh wait, his headed goal was disallowed for shirt pulling. We were going to penalties.

Simen Solbakken missed an early chance for Forest before Oliver Sellgren put Holsby ahead. Nikolai Evos got Forest off the mark but Burt Buckley retained Holsby’s penalty lead. Tomas Nardi, who’d scored the penalty in the first minute of this game, missed his spotkick and Holsby would now have a huge advantage if Shaun Spiteri converted, which he did. Ferdinand Nightingale had to score now or it was all over, which he did, but it didn’t change the fact that Theo Acheson could send Holsby Brunners into the cup final. Acheson slotted the ball home and Holsby Brunners were into the Major League cup final.  But who would they be facing?

PFC Belgrade and F.C Radauti fought a closely contested duel and winner was rather contentious. In the entire game, PFC Belgrade had 2 chances and F.C. Radauti had 3, but the substitution of Ruud Kieft for PFC Belgrade made all the difference. His 85th minute header from Mata Golo’s cross made all the difference, the left back came charging down the flank as modern full backs do and sent in the cross which Kieft buried into the net. Harsh on F.C Radauti who hadn’t exactly been terrible, but that’s Xpert Eleven for you, sometimes you don’t get what you deserve, sometimes you do.

So, we had our finalists, let’s check how the final went.

The Final:

The 38th Major League Cup Final was to take place at the Xpert Arena between PFC Belgrade and Holsby Brunners. Holsby of course have won the Major League several times but had only won the Major League cup twice, neither of which was with the current generation while PFC Belgrade were appearing in their first ever cup final.

PFC Belgrade started against Division 7 side Black Sea United, which as a Division 2 side they won with ease. Division 6 side Steaua 96 then fell before Belgrade took on Division 5 side Quiterios FC and won. The cup threw up a tough draw against Division 3 side Ben Bryters FC which they won comfortably to the scoreline of 3-0. Pennybridge Pioneers of Division 4 then fell 2-0 before former top flight side Bern United were beaten by the same scoreline. Division 1a side Svalbard FK fell in Round 7 before it took 120 minutes for them to beat Red Warriors B Team. Top flight side  Whitecaps Utd lost 4-2 before another Division 1 side in F.C Radauti were beaten to ensure that PFC Belgrade made the final

Holsby Brunners opened their cup campaign against Chumba Wumba of Division 7. Scoring 10 goals saw them reach Round 2 where they faced Paris St. Germain. The Division 6 side proved tougher opposition but nothing Holsby couldn’t handle. In the third round they were dealt a cruel draw against Division 3 side Lpool who beat them 1-0 in the first leg. However, a 2-0 home win in the second leg saw Holsby into Round 4 where they faced FC Ketchup, where they needed penalties to progress. Holsby were struggling in the league at this time so who would have thought they would make the final? Round 5 they saw off Rainbow Butt Monkeys who were the surprise of the tournament at that point before disposing of Division 5 side Journey. The 7th round saw them drawn against fellow top flight side Smooth Criminal and a solitary goal from Callum Clist saw them into the last 16, where 2.FC GERSTESECK, SparkaSpring conquerors Viljusa Utd and finally, Forest Forever, fell in Holsby’s conquest.

The captains … and … led their teams out into the arena, PFC Belgrade manager Dankinho had gone with a 4-4-2 formation while Holsby Brunners stuck it out with a familiar 4-5-1 formation. The two teams lined up as follows:

PFC Belgrade

1 GK Vasilije Nedelkovic

28 RB Sven Ungalang
4 CB Calvin Skiverton
6 CB Doinel Cristof
3 LB Mata Golo

22 RM Miroku Kamikaze
5 CM Aderito Rosando
12 MF Zoran Colakovic
11 LM Pasqual Josemi

9 CF Antero Guerreiro
16 CF Oguz Bilazer

Bench:
17 GK Uros Trbovic
2 DF Sergio Tommei
8 MF Ruud Kieft
21 MF Tygo van der Hooven
24 FW David Stånggren
Holsby Brunners

1 GK Ingvar Kask

21 RB John-Olof Nilsson
4 CB Murray Keaton
5 CB Ernesto Bortuluzzi
6 LB Oliver Sellgren

28 DM Burt Buckley
24 DM Olivio Pinho

7 RM Bert-Ola Norberg
9 AM Theo Acheson
15 LM Iker Ivan

11 CF Callum Clist

Bench:
3 DF Bruce Mimms
8 MF Atso Metsala
10 FW Reynir Sveinbjornsson
16 MF Arberto Arriaga
20 MF Shaun Spiteri

The referee for the final was Charlie Fender, so the cup final promised to be a cracker. The final got underway and immediately PFC Belgrade were on the attack as Pasqual Josemi tried to lob Ingvar Kask from the header. Holsby countered with a header from Callum Clist but Nedelkovic managed to save it. Calvin Skiverton picked up a knock in the 23rd minute but that was all that really happened in what was a goalless first half. It was a very tight affair but someone had to win the cup.

Aderito Rosando had a shot early on in the second half before the wonderfully named Miroku Kamikaze was substituted by Ruud Kieft. This substitution worked a treat for Belgrade against Radauti but would it also work against Holsby Brunners? The Brunners picked up a slight injury for Murray Keaton but neither side seemed to be able to find the back of the net… so much for this game being a cracker. With nothing to separate the two teams in normal time, the final went to extra time.

Nothing happened in the first half of extra time but in the 107th minute, PFC Belgrade were awarded a penalty. What drama, Holsby had held out for so long but now Belgrade had the chance to score what looked like being the winner in the cup final. Murray Keaton at fault for bringing down Antero Guerreiro in the box (although the penalty was controversial as some felt Guerreiro had dived in the box) meant that Belgrade’s chances of a trophy lay on Doinel Cristof. He read Ingvar Kask’s reactions and saw through his dummies, tucking the ball into the corner of the net. PFC Belgrade had the lead! Daniel_r reacted to Keaton’s mistake by hauling him off for Bruce Mimms, but Holsby needed a goal more than anything now. Spiteri and Metsala came on in anticipation of a penalty shootout but it never happened. The team with vast experience of winning trophies had lost the cup final to a team who had never won a trophy before. PFC Belgrade had become the first team not named SparkaSpring for quite some time to win the Major League cup.

Following the final, daniel_r was gracious in defeat, saying “Congratulations to the Major League Cup victory!” Dankinho responded with “Thanks. I was little bit lucky ... now i see, even forgot to give win bonus ! :)” Impressive stuff from Dankinho’s team, he didn’t even need a win bonus to get the victory.

Unfortunately we were unable to get an interview with Dankinho but we wish him all the best of luck in the XCL.

SparkaSpring FC 3-0 Jesus and his Pandas (Heidenreich ’10, Flynn ’49, Guterres ’83)
AS Roma 0-0 AC Azeitao United

SparkaSpring’s team ratings were the talk of the town today as they continued their impressive record against Jesus and his Pandas with yet another win. In a 3-5-2 formation, Sparka’s ratings accounted for 19 defence, 23 in midfield and 20 in attack. Considering how the game treats ratings, that is surprising to say the least.

It was in complete contrast to the other fixture in this group in which AS Roma and AC Azeitao United attempted to bore each other to death. The all Portuguese tie only saw two yellow cards and a slight injury to keeper Emmanuel Onaga as the only thing worthy all season.

Caricatos FC 0-2 SparkaSpring FC (Penotti PEN ’17, Guterres ’92)
AC Azeitao United 2-0 FC Sensi (Hudd ’25, Aitor ‘81)

After dispatching the Pandas, SparkaSpring were looking to do the same to Caricatos FC who had won big against Gheboaya in the first game, but Pmsea’s men are no mugs. Sure, they weren’t as strong as Sparka were but they were still a tough team with some decent depth. It was a penalty to Sparka, taken by Ciro Penotti of all people, who gave the Major League side the lead and after Caricatos rung the changes, Fabiano Guterres finished them off in the 92nd minute with yet another goal in his glamorous career.

After the boreathon of the first game, Lmags’ team got off the mark in their XCL debut thanks to Lars-Goran Hudd’s goal. FC Sensi then suffered an injury to Kritboonmalai and with no defenders on the bench were forced to sub on striker Jude Morrison. This allowed Chandor Aitor in for Azeitao’s second and they secured all three points against an FC Sensi side that look outclassed in this group at the moment.

SparkaSpring FC 8-0 FC Gheboaya (Hampel ‘3 ‘43, Mutch ‘5, Bondi ‘7 ’22 ‘32, Penotti ’14, Guterres ‘26
Assault on Darth Athena 4-0 AC Azeitao United (Rolf ’21 ‘82, Winrow ’54, Teles ’77)

Two XCLs ago these two met in the group stages and Stergr pulled off the shock of the tournament by comfortably beating SparkaSpring. But now, with the weakest squad in the XCL against the strongest, there was no real contest between the two and one of the highest scorelines in XCL history was made. Sparka went 8-0 up… inside the first half. Olgierd Hampel opened the scoring before Josh Mutch and Fidelio Bondi added to the score inside 3 minutes. Penotti added a 4th in the 14th minute before Bondi scored again in the 22nd minute and would you believe that Fabiano Guterres had yet to score? He put that right in the 26th minute to make it 6-0 before Bondi completed his hattrick inside just 32 minutes. Hampel got another goal in the 43rd minute right before half time and the fans were shouting “go for double figures”. Unfortunately nothing really happened in the second half aside from an injury to FC Gheboaya’s Vahram Giragosian. Maybe we’ll be hearing that name again in the future…

While Sparka were busy scoring goals for fun, AC Azeitao had a tough match away to Assault on Dark Athena, who had taken to the XCL like a duck to water. Of course, their manager has been here before and made it to the semi finals while in charge of Stiinta U Craiova so he’s no stranger to XCL tournaments. And Assault kept that up in devastating style as they won 4-0 and didn’t even allow AC Azeitao a chance on goal. Azeitão’s chances of qualification look difficult now…

FC Gheboaya 0-5 SparkaSpring FC (Heidenreich ‘7 ‘21, Penotti PEN ’10, Guterres ’20, Hampel ’30)
AC Azeitao United 2-0 Assault on Darth Athena (Celades ’17 ‘43)

Sparka’s 8-0 win provoked some controversy last time out over the fact that nothing happened in the second half. How would this game fare? Very one sided once again, although it wasn’t an 8-0 thrashing for Gheboaya, instead a measly 5-0 defeat. Mark Heidenreich, Ciro Penotti, Fabiano Guterres and Olgierd Hampel all chipped in with the goals that confirm SparkaSpring’s passage to the next round.

Having been demolished away, would AC Azeitao fare any better at home against Assault on Dark Athena? FC Sensi could pounce if Azeitao lost again but Lmags’ team ended Assault’s 100% start to life in the XCL thanks to two goals from Constantino Celades. To make things even better, FC Sensi lost 5-1 to AS Roma and saw their goalkeeper injured for the next game against Azeitão. A lucky break for Lmags’ men who will surely now fancy their chances of making it to the last 16.

SparkaSpring FC 2-0 Caricatos FC (Tonton ’73, Guterres ’82)
FC Sensi 2-2 AC Azeitao United (Morrison ’67, Klass ‘86) (Marcolin ’56, Side ’58)

SparkaSpring had already qualified from this group, but still needed to beat Caricatos to keep ahead of the Pandas and give them a chance at top spot. There was a chance that the Pandas could finish on the same number of points as SparkaSpring, meaning that the 8-0 win over Gheboaya would come in very handy.

FC Sensi had bought a new goalkeeper by the time they were set to face AC Azeitao United. Azeitao knew that if they won and AS Roma lost to Athena then they would be through to the knockout stages in the XCL.. Sensi however made things difficult and after going 2-0 down to Azeitao, Jude Morrison and Izzy Klass equalised, it meant Azeitao had to wait until the final round and to complicate matters, AS Roma beat Assault on Dark Athena so amazingly there were now just 2 points between the top 3 teams. FC Sensi were out but the other three teams were still very much in it.

Jesus and his Pandas 0-0 SparkaSpring FC
AC Azeitao United 1-1 AS Roma (Marcolin ‘5) (Arican ’46)

Well, Sparka had nothing left to play for other than DV with the league title and qualification to the next round both sown up already. Still, wouldn’t you love it if when playing for DV your side was still good enough to be considered a full strength side? That’s exactly what Sparka were able to do while Jesus and his Pandas started the game with 5 teenagers in the starting lineup. And yet the game finished 0-0, thanks to a superb effort by the Pandas. No matter, Sparka qualified as group winners.

AC Azeitao meanwhile could go top of their group if they beat AS Roma and FC Sensi beat Assault on Dark Athena. They got off to a great start when inside 5 minutes, Dante Marcolin headed them in front. However, as the second half got underway AS Roma defender Cemil Arican drew level and with Azeitao unable to find a winner, they were going through as group runners up. It meant that they were unable to capitalise on Assault on Dark Athena losing to FC Sensi and finished as runners up on goal difference. So SparkaSpring and AC Azeitao United went through to the next round to face… each other. Yes, for the second time in three seasons, both Major League teams will face each other in the knockout stages and both will do it just two days after the Change Report.

Major League big transfers:

After 286 appearances, which included two Major League titles, four Major League cups and a place in the coveted Hall of Fame thanks to an XCL title, Greg Tobin left SparkaSpring at the age of 35 for Division 6 side FC Beathels. Tobin leaves as SparkaSpring’s 3rd highest appearance maker, only Dermot Woodford and Caleb Noobie have made more appearances for Svajo’s team.

In the last article we reported a managerial change at Club de Atletico Madrid of Division 1b. We said last month. “Manager Mendonca_b resigned with the club in the relegation zone and was replaced by Swedish manager Pettern1891. He will be hoping to steer the team clear of relegation and in Oscar Bacelar he has the best free kick taker in the division.” Well, clearly the club was doomed and so Oscar Bacelar has left to join Rioderogo in the Pro League for an eye watering 18 million econ. A hefty boost to the coffers for Pettern’s side and it remains to be seen how his team spends their funds without one of their most influential players.

In terms of players coming in, FC HARTUMACI spent over 12 million econ on a new goalkeeper in Gabrys Szpakowski. The keeper is 34 years of age but is 16 skilled. Now that is a massive waste of econ in my opinion, but hey, I’m not the manager in this instance. Post-season, Holsby sought to strengthen their defence by signing Ciprian Timotei from Golden League Division 1b side C.S. Martimo. A player who once part of a squad that played in the top flight would now be a top flight player once again and looks likely to replace the now 35 year old Bruce Mimms. AC Azeitao United sacked Lars-Goran Hudd after he dared announce his retirement, this announcement leaves Azeitao with a clear starting midfield.

Big manager changes:

Division 2d side Badjorras FC saw a new manager take over in Pduque. The Portuguese coach has moved within the Major League from Division 4 side Rapid Eye Movement to take a job at the highs of the top three divisions in the league… but his side are bottom of Division 2d and are likely to be relegated.

Also in Division 2d but safe from relegation, Thundera ThunderTanks who are one of the top clubs in the Major League got a new manager in the shape of Benny-Noon, who left Division 5 side Bearded Dragons FC after in his own words “they weren’t going anywhere”. The new team is a much sleeker outfit with some skilled oldies as well as a few promising upcoming youngsters to replace them. He’s in the same division as cup finalists PFC Belgrade though, although probably not for long. So, that was looking like it for managerial changes this month… wait what?

BREAKING NEWS

In the last 23 hours Rachmed has left Smooth Criminal. This happened as we were going to press so breaking news indeed.

This concludes the Major League review.
