Stiinta Bacau win Ultimate League
Going into the second half of the season, Stiinta Bacau held a 4 point lead at the top of the Ultimate League. Could they retain it or would they blow it all away?

ROUND 8

Lusitanian Warriors 1-0 Jesus and his Pandas (Ze Alguem ’59)
AC Samba 2-1 Stiinta Bacau (Rodriguez ’15, Boland PEN ’26) (Hanus ’90)
Guerrilla Renegades 1-0 The Rod Squad (Gligor ’44)
Grand Rapids FC 4-1 Myrmidonians FC (Leadbeater ’46 ‘60, Evers ’56 PEN ’75) (Juhlin PEN ’26)

How about this for a twist? After narrowly securing the win against AC Samba, Stiinta Bacau then lost the second of the double headers. Lionel Rodriguez and an Ethan Boland penalty sent AC Samba 2-0 up inside 26 minutes. It took until the 90th minute for Stiinta to score once again, this time through Edvard Hanus, but it was too late. So, who could take advantage of Stiinta’s slipup?

Not the Rod Squad as their title hopes suffered a blow with a 1-0 away defeat against Guerrilla Renegades. Gligor has become the Renegade’s main striker this season and his shot in the penalty area was enough to overcome Squad, although Rod’s men will point to Acombley’s effort being disallowed. This win moved Guerrilla Renegades up into 2nd place and cut the game to Stiinta to 3 points, it was now a Romanian 1-2 in the Ultimate League.

Grand Rapids thrashed Myrmidonians FC 4-1 to go level on points with the Rod Squad. Evers has really come into his own this season and scored his 5th and 6th efforts on goal. They had to come from behind though as Juhlin’s penalty gave Myrmidonians the lead. But it was one way traffic after that as Evers, coupled with a couple of Leadbeater free kicks saw Grand Rapids run out easy winners. Lusitanian Warriors gave their survival hopes a boost meanwhile with another victory against Jesus and his Pandas. The amount of times that Tiago’s men have got the better of the Pandas means that they are now listed as the Panda’s nightmare opponent. The Warriors were now 2 points off the Pandas and 5 points off safety which is where AC Samba now lay.

ROUND 9

Stiinta Bacau 1-2 Jesus and his Pandas (Graffmann ’82) (Bornes ’27, Dubar ’76)
Myrmidonians FC 0-3 Lusitanian Warriors (Pirelli ’34, Bjarne Hansen ’75, Rodas ’84)
Grand Rapids FC 3-2 Guerrilla Renegades (Carter ‘2, Peplow ’18, Evers ’30) (Gligor ’21, MacLaren ’87)
The Rod Squad 0-1 AC Samba (Paris ’34)

Fresh from their elimination against Stiinta Bacau in the cup, the reigning champions Jesus and his Pandas blew the title race wide open with a 2-1 away win over Stiinta, denting their title hopes. Rico Bornes and Louison Dubar were enough to ensure that Ingmar Graffman’s effort would not be enough for Stoicem’s team.

So it was to the big game between Grand Rapids FC and Guerrilla Renegades to see who could take advantage. The Renegades could go level on points with Stiinta if they won, but Grand Rapids weren’t having any of it. Danny Carter gave them the lead inside just two minutes and Peplow extended that lead in the 18th minute.  Gligor got one back for the Renegades, but just 9 minutes later Evers scored Grand Rapid’s third goal. Allen MacLaren’s late effort proved nothing more than a consolation and as a result, GR FC jumped both The Rod Squad and Guerrilla Renegades to move up into 2nd place. This was helped by the fact that AC Samba got a win away against The Rod Squad, with the ever reliable Paris coming up trumps again. Warriors boosted their survival hopes with a 3-0 away win over bottom of the table Myrmidonians, who are performing as expected to be honest, way too old and in need of a rebuild.

So after 9 rounds just 7 points separated 1st from 6th place. With just 5 games to go it seems that anyone could win this title…

ROUND 10

Guerrilla Renegades 3-2 Lusitanian Warriors (Melaugh ’24, Bjarne Hansen OG ’37, Gligor ‘91) (Pirelli ’30, Rodas ‘87)
The Rod Squad 0-0 Grand Rapids FC
Jesus and his Pandas 1-0 AC Samba (Dallmann ’79)
Myrmidonians FC 0-2 Stiinta Bacau (Hanus ’32, Graffmann ’59)

Without any doubt the game of the day was between Guerrilla Renegades and Lusitanian Warriors. The Renegades' attacking brand of football often produces exciting games, with goals at both ends and it was the case here too as after Melaugh opened the scoring from a free kick in the 24th minute, Pirelli equalised for Warriors. But just 7 minutes later, Pirelli’s midfield partner Hansen headed the ball into his own net and the Renegades were back in front. It looked like the Renegades were going to win the game, but a late goal in the 87th minute for Rodas ensured the game was 2-2 and that Warriors were in position to snatch a point. But a dramatic 91st minute goal from Gligor ensured all three points would be going to the Renegades, what a twist and with The Rod Squad and Grand Rapids drawing with each other it put the Renegades in a strong position in the league. If Stiinta lost to Myrmidonians then we would have three teams at the top.

But Myrmidonians haven’t been struggling for no reason and Stiinta were easily able to cherry pick three precious points, Hanus and Graffmann scoring the goals that sent Stiinta 3 points clear at the top. It was looking like their title to lose, but this season’s been so unpredictable that anything could happen… Meanwhile Jesus and his Pandas hauled themselves out of the relegation zone on goal difference ahead of AC Samba, coincidentally AC Samba had the goal difference advantage by 1 goal but Dallmann’s goal reversed the situation.

ROUND 11

Lusitanian Warriors 1-3 The Rod Squad (Bjarne Hansen ’89) (Rodgerson ‘2, Rooke ’22, Acombley ‘76)
Stiinta Bacau 1-0 Guerrilla Renegades (McBrain ’90)
Jesus and his Pandas 6-0 Myrmidonians FC (Gutierrez ’22, Klincec ’24, Varriale ’41 ’49 ’55 ‘86)
AC Samba 1-2 Grand Rapids FC (Tedesco ’45) (Grisales ’18, Scolari ’59)

An all Romanian encounter was arguably one of the biggest games of the season as Stiinta Bacau took on fellow title contenders Guerrilla Renegades. Stiinta had been knocked out of the cup so they only had the league to play for now. The Renegades were three points behind Stiinta and needed to win to stay in the title race, but Stiinta were at home and could damage the Renegades hopes if they won. The game was a very close and open affair; Stiinta dominated possession in the first half but couldn’t break down the Renegades defence, with Enke on top form for this game. Stoicem shuffled up his pack in the second half and McBrain replaced Ed McImage. The Renegades suffered a blow when Marcos Covarrubias was injured but just when it looked like the game would finish 0-0, which would have been a great result for Grand Rapids, Stiinta Bacau’s McBrain scored a dramatic 90th minute winner to seal all three points for Stoicem’s team and send them three points clear of Guerrilla Renegades. Bad news for the Renegades who were desperately unlucky to lose the game, but what could Grand Rapids do against AC Samba?

Grisales gave them the lead in the 18th minute which was a great result at the time with Stiinta drawing but Reno Tedesco equalised.  Fortunately, Scolari was on hand to restore the lead with Grand Rapids but they continue to trail Stiinta by three points. That encounter between the two is looking like a fascinating prospect, but when you score a last minute goal like McBrain did, you have to think it might just be your season…

Meanwhile a win for the Pandas would see Myrmidonians relegated to Division 1. Coincidentally the two teams were against each other and Myrmidonians suffered a dismal end to their time as a top flight side as Jesus and his Pandas won 6-0. Varriale, who is playing his last season for the club, scored 4 goals, showing that there is still some life left in the old dog. After finishing 3rd last season, Myrmidonians look like replicating the finishing patterns of Beerwah Bears in seasons 27 and 28 and Ilias7 must now seriously consider a rebuild as his team’s age catches up with it and they look like falling down the divisions almost as quickly as they rose through them.

Finally, The Rod Squad thrashed Lusitanian Warriors to jump into 3rd place. This was a bad result for the Warriors who really needed to win to stay up but a dreadful season by the Warriors after a 3rd and two 2nd placed finishes in their previous 3 seasons and they were now 9 points behind JahP with a worse goal difference. The Warriors were as good as down.

ROUND 12

Guerrilla Renegades 3-1 Jesus and his Pandas (Gligor ‘8 ’38 ’77) (Varriale ’90)
The Rod Squad 2-2 Stiinta Bacau (Rodgerson ‘6, Neville ’30) (Padurariu ’83, Hanus ’88)
Lusitanian Warriors 0-1 Grand Rapids FC (Cadete ’79)
AC Samba 2-1 Myrmidonians FC (Paris ’58, Cafu ’70) (Alnefjord ’92)

The business end of the season approaches and so does the crucial matches. Round 13’s encounter between Grand Rapids and Stiinta Bacau promised to be the most vital game of the season so both teams needed to be in the best position they could going to it. But Stiinta Bacau tripped up as the pressure mounted. The Rod Squad did lead the UL at one point and two quick goals from Rodgerson and Neville gave Squad a 2-0 lead before they were awarded a penalty. However, Hardy Rodgerson missed his spotkick, which proved to be vital later on. And after the substitutions of Bixby, McMannaman and Mellor, Custodio Mario got a nasty injury. With all 3 subs used up, Squad were down to 10 men. Stiinta took advantage and Dorin Padurariu pulled one back. They then lost Ed McImage to injury which could come back to haunt them later on but Hanus rescued a point for Stiinta. How would Grand Rapids respond?

We’ll find out in a moment, first of all, the game between Guerrilla Renegades and Jesus and his Pandas, where a Gligor hat-trick killed the Panda’s recent momentum and put the Renegades within touching distance of safety. Why go to this game first?

Because if Warriors lost to GR FC, they would be relegated from the UL. The Warriors held their own for most of the match and McAnespie was forced off with a light injury for Cadete. Presumably W_A_R didn’t want to risk any of his major stars ahead of the big game against Stiinta, but it proved to be an inspired pick as in the 79th minute, with news of Stiinta losing, Ragnarsson played the ball to 19 year old Cadete and the young defender may have just played a vital role in the title race as his long range shot pulled GR FC level on points with Stiinta while at the same time condemning the Warriors to Division 1 next season. Of course, Stiinta managed to rescue a point, but that doesn’t matter. Riverside Park will host the game that is very likely to decide the destination of this season’s title, barring any Tiago like moments on the final day of the season.

Finally, AC Samba kept alive their survival hopes with a 2-1 win over already relegated Myrmidonians FC. The away side were still contesting the cup and Ilias7 seemed to have shifted resources to that competition at the expense of the club’s top flight status.

ROUND 13

Grand Rapids FC 0-1 Stiinta Bacau (McBrain ’66)
Lusitanian Warriors 0-1 AC Samba (Ajain ’89)
Jesus and his Pandas 2-1 The Rod Squad (Daniel ’57, Bobrov ’76) (Neville ’82)
Myrmidonians 3-0 Guerrilla Renegades (Graco ’40, Lundqvist ’51, Brolenius ’81)

This was it, Grand Rapids vs. Stiinta Bacau; the big one. If Stiinta won the game, they would win the title. If Grand Rapids won, then they would go away to the Pandas on the final day of the season in order to win the title.

Grand Rapids lined up in a 3-5-2 formation with Farinha in goal. A back three of Leadbeater, Scolari and McAnespie, a midfield of Ragnarsson, Carter, Warg, Revell and Grisales and a front two of Evers and Peplow. Stiinta countered with a 4-5-1 formation with Ackram in goal, a back four of Robles, Cabrera, Bernardo and Narciso, a midfield of Astle, McBrain, Valjavec, Edgren and Hanus and a front lone man of Padurariu.

Grand Rapids dominated possession early on but it was Stiinta who had the first chance from a free kick. The free kick was lifted up for McBrain to strike on the half volley but the 34 year old, who was playing his last season for the club, fired wide. Grand Rapids then lost Grisales to injury so Jeffrey Carey was forced on as his replacement, a blow for W_A_R’s team as Grisales is an influential player. Half-time and the scoreline was 0-0.

In the second half, Stiinta began to get more of a foothold in the game and when McBrain headed in Edgren’s corner, the away fans went wild. Stiinta were on the verge of becoming Ultimate League champions unless GR FC could respond. In the final minute of the game Stiinta had one last shot but it didn’t matter. It was a fantastic return to the top flight for GR FC under the new management of W_A_R, but the former champions could not take back the crown the Pandas took from them. Instead, there were new Ultimate League champions. The first Romanian team to win the UL title since Cormorans F.C exactly 10 seasons ago, Stoicem had completed the Ultimate rise to the top, winning title after title and now they had secured the biggest honour of all, Ultimate League champions of Season 32, the 19th different team to win the Ultimate League title. Cruel on W_A_R however, who had seen his team dominate possession only to lose out at the last moment.

With the title battle settled, all that was left to play for now was the relegation battle. AC Samba took on already relegated Warriors but it took until the 89th minute for them to break the cup finalists down as Ajalin gave them the lead in the 89th minute. So how did the Pandas fare against The Rod Squad? Well, they managed a 2-1 win against The Rod Squad with goals from young strikers Daniel and Bobrov, but Neville pulled one back for Squad. However, this result meant that The Rod Squad dropped into the relegation zone, lifting AC Samba out of it. Guerrilla Renegades weren’t safe either, in fact, going into the final games of the season, there was just 2 points separating 3rd from 6th.

ROUND 14:

The Rod Squad 1-1 Myrmidonians FC (Rodgerson ’88) (Juhlin PEN ’38)
Stiinta Bacau 2-0 Lusitanian Warriors (Astle PEN '4 Valjavec '66)
Jesus and his Pandas 3-0 Grand Rapids FC (Bobrov ’16, Klincec ’39, Abella ’77)
AC Samba 0-1 Guerrilla Renegades (Rackner ’65)

The big game of the day was AC Samba vs. Guerrilla Renegades. The Renegades could not afford to lose this game against AC Samba; otherwise they would be relying on Grand Rapids and Myrmidonians to do them a big favour. The first half saw no goalmouth action. Fortunately for both these sides, Myrmidonians had scored through Juhlin’s penalty so The Rod Squad were deep in relegation trouble at half time. While Jesus and his Pandas were leading 2-0 against Grand Rapids. So at half time it was The Rod Squad heading down.

Nothing interesting happened in all three games for the next 15 minutes but in the 65th minute, Rackner gave Guerrilla Renegades the lead against AC Samba. But it didn’t matter as Rod Squad were losing to Myrmidonians in a game they really needed to win so both AC Samba and Guerrilla Renegades appeared to be safe. Pandas meanwhile went ahead 3-0 against Grand Rapids.

Myrmidonians then lost van Gastel to injury meaning Carson had to replace him. Time was running out though but a potentially decisive blow came in the 88th minute when Rodgerson equalised for The Rod Squad. With nothing happening in the other two games, AC Samba were now level with The Rod Squad on points. That goal proved to be the last action of the game for The Rod Squad so it was now down to AC Samba to determine their fate. Samba failed to score against Guerrilla Renegades and they really needed to because The Rod Squad had a much better goal difference.

So in the end this is how the final table looks:

So AC Samba are relegated from the Ultimate League on Goal Difference, joining Lusitanian Warriors and Myrmidonians FC in Division 1. They will be replaced by newcomers RAK and Steppenwolf Suckers, the latter marking a former UL title winning manager’s return to the top flight in Neno4. The play-off was won by cup finalists Dave FC.

We caught up with Stoicem following his title triumph with Stiinta Bacau to find out what it was like

XD: Congratulations on winning the Ultimate League. What does this mean to you?

Stoicem: For me wining the Ultimate league is my biggest achievement in this game, I think to win the Ultimate League you need to have a lot of ambition and patience and most of all hard work... to get to the top.

Let me present you my history at this team:
I’ve started as manager in 14/10/2010 from that date; Stiinta Bacau didn’t know what success was coming for them.

Below is my achievements at this team, you can see that season 20 until 32 the team had an enormous success, winning everything.

Won Division 1b season 31
Won Division 2d season 30
Won Division 3g season 29
Won Division 4o season 28
Finished 3 out of 8 in Division 4n season 27
Won Division 5:29 season 26
Won Division 6:58 season 25
Finished 6 out of 8 in Division 5:29 season 24
Finished 2 out of 8 in Division 6:58 season 23
Finished 3 out of 8 in Division 6:58 season 22
Finished 8 out of 8 in Division 5:29 season 21
Finished 2 out of 8 in Division 5:28 season 20

XD: It was a tough season, with Grand Rapids pushing you all the way and every team so competitive. Are you relieved to have come out with the title with a game to spare?

Stoicem: Talking about Grand Rapids they are very good team, I know them from last season they were every time “on my back”, it was hard playing with them but we’ve manage to win every game against them, for us winning to a such great team made us think that we are the champions this season, all the teams in this division were very hard to win with them.

XD: You will be participating in the XCL next season. How do you think your team will fare?

Stoicem: XCL is a dream for every manager that plays Expert Eleven, here you can find the greatest teams in this game and the greatest managers and players also, I hope that my team will make a good face and will play with no fear; I have confidence in my players abilities.

XD: Freddy McBrain retires after this season. As the player that scored the winning goal for you, how much will your team miss him?

Stoicem: I want to thank “Uncle” Freddy for his experience and most of all for his determination to help the team in the most difficult matches, as an example last game when he scored the goal of his end of career great way to retire, he will be missed. But if you look closely in the last season I’ve wanted someone to be his replacement and that player is Florin Strugure, he has the potential to be as “uncle” Freddy McBrain, and I’m putting all my base in him.

XD: Do you plan to address the advancing age of your squad that will see all of your best players reach at least 30 next season?

Stoicem: The age is not a problem, for me having in the team old players it’s a benefit because we will use their experience and their knowledge when we will play in XCL and with time I will try to bring more younger players from the transfer market and from our youth team to help them learn from those "oldies but goodies".

XD: Thank you and congrats on the title

Stoicem: Thank you very much for this interview and let me end it with a famous quote from the great Eric Cantona
“You can change your wife, your politics, your religion, but never; never can you change your favourite football team.”

Cheers

Cup round-up

Round 6:

Well, by far the biggest news in this round was the elimination of Jesus and his Pandas from the cup. After going 54 games unbeaten in the cup, resulting in four consecutive trophies, the Panda’s journey ended in the 6th round against Stiinta Bacau. Ed McImage sent a corner into Freddy McBrain who became a Romanian hero when he sent Stiinta into the next round. The elimination of the Pandas was noticed by many in the Ultimate League, with the Pandas being the most recognisable club to many in the league, but this time round, there could be a new double winner…

Taunton Town FC failed to repeat their heroics against Cairo Nightboats as they were knocked out of the cup by 7th seeds Piston Broke FC. Last season’s finalists IFK Goteborg dispatched Division 5 side Kingriver FC while Buried Talents, 10th seeds in the cup, went out to a Division 4 side, albeit the highly valued, 194 million econ rated Cockney Hammers F.C, a team which is one of the strongest in the Ultimate League at 13 bars.

A dramatic cup tie between ADO Bang Kae and FC Dragoes went to a penalty shootout. ADO were on course to win the game but in the 91st minute, Enok Rundberg was sent off. Then Madjer Falcao equalised in the 94th minute to send the game to penalties. ADO were eliminated on penalties and Dragoes were in the 7th round.

Division 6 side Saddler City had made it all the way to the 6th round of the cup but went out of the cup against 15th seeds Joelitos, a valiant effort though as Saddler City were actually leading the game at one point and the game went to extra time, but ultimately the stronger Joelitos side came through with the victory. Calandracas exited in the 6th round against top flight opposition and two time cup winners Guerrilla Renegades while Dave FC stunned top flight title challengers The Rod Squad with a penalty shootout victory. Leslie Acombley and Colin Ablett were the guilty parties for Squad as the Indian Division 1 side progressed to the 7th round.

Finally, Division 1a leaders Falkirk Flyers were involved in a thriller against Division 3 side Green Orange… and Green Orange came out on top! Jesus Cardenosa came off the bench to open the scoring for Green Orange but the talented 23 year old Jardin headed an equaliser just two minutes later from Ponte’s corner. Jardin then headed MacRanald’s cross into the net and Falkirk Flyers were leading. Former Damocles midfielder van Cortlandt, who joined Green Orange this season, came off the bench for the closely man marked captain Jesus Cardenosa and helped swing the match in Green Orange’s favour. Tevez got the equaliser and Leopardi gave them the lead 15 minutes later, Messy setting up both goals. MacRanald was then sent off for Falkirk Flyers before Leopardi scored again and set up Ibrahim for Green Orange’s 5th. GarethLloyd had claimed a cup scalp; this was shaping up to be an interesting tournament.

Round 7:

So, of the 32 teams left in the Ultimate League Cup, only Guerrilla Renegades had won it before. They were one of four top flight sides left in the competition, the others being Myrmidonians FC, Stiinta Bacau and Lusitanian Warriors... Other notable teams in the competition are Klackspark FF, managed by Ultimate League admin DegerforsIF, Xpert Daily reporter Gago_94’s old team Pirates F.C, who have come on strong this season with a promotion challenge to Division 2 and a strong cup run, former top flight side Hammarby Sodra (Ozono United), Piston Broke FC, Division 1b sides Dave FC and Bayern de los Caidos.

With the Pandas now out of the cup, cup finalists IFK Goteborg were the highest seeded team left, but they fell to their fellow Division 2a side The Mutts Nutts, who won 2-1 despite an unfortunate injury to the Nutts’ first choice keeper Costy Nae. So neither of last season’s finalists would be in the cup final this time. Division 4 side JK Besiktas were one of the strongest teams left in the entire competition and they went 2-0 up against Piston Broke FC, last season’s quarter finalists, in the first half. However a remarkable comeback in the second half by Piston saw them reach the Last 16 of the Ultimate League cup for the second consecutive season, while Joelitos’ cup adventures ended against Freddysophia’s Kyotiez Killerz.

League admin DegerforsIF was enjoying one of his best ever seasons in the cup with Klackspark FF and he made the perfect start against Burbled FC Warriors with their new addition for this season, Crowley opening the scores. However, Warriors came back through 22 year old Benedito to set up a nervy second half. With no goals in the second half the game went to extra time and when that failed to produce a goal, the tie was settled on penalties. Woeful penalties by Klackspark combined with clinical finishing saw Burbled FC Warriors into the last 16 of the cup. What an achievement.

Guerrilla Renegades and Hammarby Sodra were both relegated from the Ultimate League top flight back in Season 25 and on both previous occasions when they met in the top flight, the Renegades won. Now they met again in remarkably different states, the Renegades were a top flight team again while Hammarby were in the depths of Division 5 but Zvjezdan Misimovic threatened an upset when he gave Hammarby the lead. Covarrubias equalised. Pablo Rivera then restored Hammarby’s advantage before Deruelle went off injured. Could Hammarby pull off the upset? Well, with Raymond Melaugh on your team it’s difficult to not concede free kicks and Melaugh pulled off another screamer to send the tie to extra time. Neither side could find a winner although Fry had a great chance, but it would now be decided by penalties. The crucial penalty miss came from Hammarby Sodra’s Stock in an otherwise faultless shootout. Cherkasov sent the Renegades into the last 16.

Myrmidonians were also held to a draw by Red Star Deanshanger and needed penalties to progress. Amazingly, Red Star Deanshanger’s star defender Viera, one of the best defenders in the Ultimate League, was at fault for putting Myrmidonians through, until Calistrat missed his penalty, but Barker also missed, meaning Myrmidonians were safely into the next round. Lusitanian Warriors faced the toughest test of the top flight sides left in the competition with a game against FC Dragoes. This all Portuguese tie was settled thanks to Lusitanian Warriors’ Ignazio Rodas, who struck twice to send Tiago’s men through.

The Pandas’ conquerors, Stiinta Bacau, needed a helping hand from the referee to send of Vilhelm Dagerback for the Blue Eagles before taking the lead through Padurariu in extra time, but it was enough to see them into the last 16, two teams were now looking to do the league and cup double and neither of them were the Pandas. Meanwhile, more extra time as a dramatic last minute of extra time winner by Inglethorpe sent Cockney Hammers F.C through at Division 2 side Sporting da Quinta’s expense. Strathmore Saints were dumped out by Laguna, an epic penalty shootout saw all men on the field from both sides take a penalty, including both goalkeepers, before AFC Brza prevailed over Mrcozne Mloty, Vila Real FC saw off SL-Benfica, Green Orange were knocked out by Kruger FC, Pirates F.C saw their cup run end at the hands of Andrinos SC who themselves are having a strong season, a dramatic late goal by Agosto sent Racing de Santander through while finally, Not-so Young Boys managed a clever way of subbing on their goalkeeper Hislop for the penalty shoot-out against Dave FC and it nearly paid off until Stjarna’s miss which meant Despinic could send Dave FC into the last 16.

Last 16:

Piston Broke FC 3-2 Burbled FC Warriors (Lonsdale ’82, Brohiln ‘105 ‘108) (Durao ’62, Dobson ‘119)
Guerrilla Renegades 3-0 The Mutts Nutts (Havlykke’54, Melaugh ’71 ’80)
Kyotiez Killerz 1-2 Lusitanian Warriors (Rodas OG’93) (Berberich ’20, Pirelli PEN ’75)
Dave FC 2-2 Stiinta Bacau (Farias ’58 ’79) (McImage ’18 ‘62) (Dave FC win 4-3 on penalties)
Laguna 4-2 Cockney Hammers F.C (Rijo ‘4 ‘83, Udrea ‘7, Damen ‘46) (Neves ’26 ’91)
Kruger FC 0-1 Myrmidonians FC (Alnefjord ’78)
Racing de Santander 4-0 Andrinos SC (Kalenichenko ’14, Agosto ’39, Hiroshitaki ’57, Malcolm ‘81)
Vila Real FC 0-2 AFC Brza (Nobre ’16, Milosevic ’70)

By far the biggest tie was Dave FC vs. Stiinta Bacau. Stiinta Bacau won Division 1b last season, the division that Dave FC were leading going into this game, but of course since then Stiinta are now leading the entire Ultimate League. The game proved to be dramatic; Ed McImage gave Stiinta the lead early on in the 18th minute but Farias equalised for Dave FC. Just four minutes later, Ed McImage restored Stiinta’s lead but Farias scored with 11 minutes of time remaining to send the game to extra time. With nothing happening in extra time, a dramatic penalty shootout followed. Substitute Bajada opened the scoring for Dave which was followed by Marcus Astle’s penalty miss. Dave FC had the advantage but Petrovic wasted it, McBrain put Stiinta back on level terms. Sagitario then missed his spotkick which was seized upon by Narciso, but Farias applied some pressure in the following round. It worked, the usually lethal Hanus missed his penalty when he could have put the pressure on Dave FC and now it was effectively sudden death. Delvecchio and McImage both missed their team’s next spotkicks, Mbouh and Robles both scored, Despinic and Padurariu both missed, nothing appeared to be able to separate the two teams, but it was a goalkeeper who would be the hero in this game. Vasic, Dave FC’s goalkeeper converted the crucial penalty and then his antics put off Lazaro Bernado to end Stiinta’s double dreams, meaning Dave FC were chasing a double of their own now.

The Mutts Nutts of Division 2a found themselves absolutely destroyed by Guerrilla Renegades, who are the only team left in the cup to have won it before. A shot in the penalty area by Halvykke was followed by two free kicks from Melaugh to send the top flight side comfortably through and with Stiinta Bacau out; a trophy just might be a possibility for the Renegades. Another top fight side in Myrmidonians made it through against Kruger FC thanks to a Alnefjord goal while Lusitanian Warriors disposed of fellow Portuguese side Killerz with goals from Berberich and Pirelli. Just as well as a comic own goal in the 93rd minute from Ignazio Rodas could have been disastrous if the Warriors hadn’t scored. Andrinos SC’s cup run came to an end thanks to being forced to field a weakened team. Even so, Racing de Santander had never been so far in the cup before and a 4-0 win with four different goalscorers saw them into the quarter finals. While one of the favourites, Cockney Hammers F.C. had a poor game and were knocked out by Laguna in a 4-2 defeat. AFC Brza kept the standards high going into the quarters after they won 2-0 away to Vila Real FC.

Burbled FC Warriors looked like they were going through for a while against Piston Broke FC before Lonsdale scored in the 82nd minute. Brohlin dramatically scored twice in extra time to ensure that Dobson’s 119th minute goal for the Warriors wouldn’t happen. Piston were in the Quarter Finals for the second season running.

Quarter Finals:

Dave FC 2-1. Piston Broke FC (Delvecchio ’21, Silhavy ‘73) (Matesanz ’28)
Guerrilla Renegades 1-3 Myrmidonians FC (Melaugh ’17) (Van Gastel ’33, Lundqvist ’64, Brolenius ‘90)
Racing de Santander 0-5 Laguna (Clementin ‘1, Damen ’25, Andronache ’47, Chave ’57, Rijo ‘77)
AFC Brza 2-4 Lusitanian Warriors (Maletic ’78, Nordberg ’84) (Pirelli ’12, Goitom ’35, Ze Alguem ’96, Amor ‘104)

A great drew for the two outsiders left in the competition as both Racing de Santander and Laguna were drawn against each other while Guerrilla Renegades drew fellow top flight side Myrmidonians FC. In the battle of the two lowest ranked sides, a paperweight defence from Racing de Santander was exploited by Laguna who dominated the game and won 5-0. The Division 4 side were into the next round, but who awaited them in the next round?

Piston Broke had to face Dave FC and after Delvecchio gave Dave the lead and first choice goalkeeper Nazare was injured, it looked bleak for Piston Broke. But Matesanz’s header gave hope. The substitution of Silhavy however turned things in Dave’s favour and he scored the goal which put Dave FC into the semi finals. At the rate they are going, you can’t rule them out of winning the cup, but cruel luck for Piston Broke.

The massive tie between Guerrilla Renegades and Myrmidonians was closely thought. Myrmidonians had already been relegated from the top flight but they still had something to play for. Melaugh gave the Renegades the lead from a free kick but Van Gastel equalised. Lundqvist gave Myrmidonians the lead and the Renegades were in danger of going out. Their exit was confirmed in the 90th minute when Brolenius scored a long range shot to secure Myrmidonians in the semi finals. There would be new cup winners this season and with the league not going so well, it was yet another missed opportunity for Guerrilla Renegades to win a trophy. CRaPoLoGy was furious at letting this one slip, responding after the match “Does this game make any sense anymore?!? :)) Ridonck!...” Ilias7 responded with “Yes!!! the sense of humor!!! Xaxaxa”

Could Tiago finally win a trophy? He had to overcome AFC Brza first to make it to the semis if he wanted to win it. And they went into half time 2-0 up thanks to goals from Pirelli and Goitom. However, two quick goals from Maletic and Nordberg brought AFC Brza right back into the tie to compound Ignazio Rodas’ injury. However, two extra time goals from Ze Alguem and Rodas’ replacement Rodolfo Amor sent Tiago’s men back into the semi finals of the cup, a stage they haven’t graced in a while.

Semi Finals:

Dave FC 2-1 Laguna (Farias ’30, Delvecchio '38) (Chave '68)
Myrmidonians FC 1-2 Lusitanian Warriors (Lundqvist ’29) (Konichawa ’85, Amor ‘114)

Well, only one current top flight side would make it into the final although both had already been relegated from the top flight while the team on the other side was fighting for promotion TO the Ultimate League. Myrmidonians vs. Lusitanian Warriors was the main clash while on the other side, Dave FC and Laguna were fighting to be in their first ever final.

We start with the all top flight affair. Both relegated teams, Lusitanian Warriors and Myrmidonians had reached the cup final this season which shows just how strong the top flight was this season. Pirelli picked up a knock from Alnefjord’s challenge after having an earlier free kick attempt while Alnefjord’s attempt was thwarted at the other end. Lundqvist broke the deadlock in the 29tth minute to give Myrmidonians the lead.

In the second half, Ze Alguem narrowly missed a shot before the cards came out for the Warriors. Tiago was facing yet another trophyless season and Lusitanian Warriors are looking like the best team to never have won a trophy. But wait, Konichawa equalised from Pirelli’s set piece free kick, the Japanese winger crashed the ball into the back of the net and Warriors were back in this game. Alnefjord’s last minute header was saved at point blank range by Kassine to take the game to extra time, when Borja came on for Wiltershed.

Extra time arrived but Hansen’s lob was the only thing that happened of note in the first period of extra time. Konichawa had a chance in the second period of extra time but Hammarskjold saved it with ease. You could tell this was a match between two of the best teams in the Ultimate League. Lusitanian Warriors were throwing the kitchen sink at Myrmidonians now, all those missed chances to win a trophy and Tiago could not let another opportunity pass. But in the 114th minute came the biggest goal of the game. Weissenhauser charged down the flanks and delivered a cross into substitute striker Amor, who’d replaced Ze Alguem earlier in the tie, and Amor crashed the ball into the back of the net. 2-1 Warriors and the Portuguese inside the Xpert Arena were rocking, they were heading for the cup final unless Myrmidonians scored a last minute equaliser. Things got even better for the Warriors when Alnefjord was sent off for a second bookable offense and it wasn’t long before the referee blew his whistle. Relegated from the top flight they may be, but for the first time since Season 26, Warriors would contest the Ultimate League Cup final. And this time there were no Pandas to stop them, but who would be their opposition this time round? Dave FC or Laguna?

Laguna had fought valiantly to get to the semi finals of the Ultimate League cup despite plying their trade in Division 4, but this was arguably their biggest test against a Dave FC side who were contesting promotion to the top flight. Dave FC were the favourites for this game but Laguna really took the game to them. Dave FC scored with their first chance though, Farias opened the scoring in the 30th minute from a long range shot and Delvecchio’s free kick made it 2-0. Laguna were by no means doing awfully, Dave FC were just a much stronger team and it showed in the perfect conversion rate they held into half time.

Super sub Silhavy came on at half time but Vasic had to be alert to keep out Damen’s free kick. Laguna were rewarded for their efforts in the 68th minute when Chave headed in Meijer’s corner and you have to say they didn’t deserve to be losing this game without scoring a single goal. But despite throwing the kitchen sink at Dave FC, they just could not get past the barrier that was Vasic, who was having a strong game. And so, despite Laguna creating 8 chances to Dave FC’s 5, team strength, it seems, really does matter and Dave FC head into their first ever cup final.

Final:

The 32nd Ultimate League Cup final was to be contested between Lusitanian Warriors and Dave FC. Dave FC were managed by Indian manager Metallica4 and were in their first ever cup final while Lusitanian Warriors are one of the current giants of the Ultimate League under the management of Tiago M. Despite their relegation from the top flight, the Warriors are a team not to be messed with, as in the three previous seasons, Tiago has finished 3rd, 2nd and 2nd again. He also had lost a cup final back in Season 26 so this was his club’s 2nd final. The team he’d lost to was Jesus and his Pandas so with no Pandas in the way this time, could Tiago finally claim the trophy?

Lusitanian Warriors began their cup campaign against Division 7 side FC KRASULJE, which they won 13-0 on aggregate. Another Division 6 side tijuna fc were swept aside before Division 5 side Island Geijsers fell to the Warriors but not after a tight first leg. Division 3 side A.S Roma were thrashed in Round 4 before a young-ish team in Dirty Dogs FC  were also trashed. Some Team (that’s the actual name of the team, not a paraphrase for one) then fell 2-0 before FC Dragoes lost 2-0 to the Warriors in their toughest test so far. At that point the Warriors had only conceded 1 goal in the cup competition which was a contrast to their awful league form. Fellow Portuguese side Kyotiez Killerz however gave them a game which they only narrowly scraped past and they needed extra time to defeat AFC Brza and Myrmidonians FC, both exciting games in their own way with the former being a goalfest and the latter being an edge of your seat game. But after overcoming everything, they were ready for the final.

Dave FC meanwhile reached the final after starting out in the first round with a 12-0 aggregate thrashing of ARDIT. The second round saw them face 6th Division side Gunghult FC and give an even bigger thrashing to the tune of 14-0 on aggregate. Division 5 side Natural Born Loosers then lived up to their name as they lost both legs of the cup tie between themselves and Dave FC, following which, Division 4 side serbiska tigrana and Division 5 side Monkeybutt Wrench were dispatched. They then defeated top flight side The Rod Squad on penalties and also needed penalties to defeat hotshot Division 2 side Not So Young Boys (who may be a top flight team in the future). Dave FC won their third consecutive penalty shootout when they beat eventual UL champions Stiinta Bacau before overcoming Piston Broke FC and Laguna to reach the final.

Gottfried Berberich and Kristian Ebejer led out the teams into a packed Xpert Arena with fans of both teams desperate to see their side win their first ever trophy. Team news came in and Lusitanian Warriors decided to play a 3-5-2 formation, a formation Tiago has often preferred and it allowed him to pair Rodas and Alguem up front, while Nbagwe Goitom was left on the bench. Dave FC have heavily favoured the 4-5-1 formation, but for this game they decided to break from convention and play with a 5-4-1. Petrovic was the man sacrificed in midfield while allowed Ingham to form a back 5 with Delvecchio, Bajada, Frazao and Mbouh. Farias was once again preferred to Silhavy up front while Rui Costa was once again left on the bench. The teams lined up as follows:

Lusitanian Warriors
1 GK Sidi Kassine

4 CB Nermin Prasinha
5 CB Raimond Weissenhauser
6 CB Glaucio Tristao

8 DM Cliff Bjarne Hansen
18 DM Joao Castelli

7 RM Marco Pirelli
10 AM Gottfried Berberich (captain)
17 LM Nobuhiro Konichawa

9 CF Ignazio Rodas
11 CF Ze Alguem

Bench:
2 DF Nbagwe Goitom
19 MF Albertino Maduro
21 FW Rodolfo Amor
25 MF Fabricio Lucas
28 MF Almiro Barrocas
Dave FC
1 GK Aco Vasic

21 RWB Caracario Delvecchio
25 CB Ryan Bajada
26 CB Ernesto Frazao
28 CB Ned Ingham
30 LWB Salomon Mbouh

16 DM Rogério Oldair
23 RM Kristian Ebejer (captain)
22 LM Marko Despinic

8 AM Bráulio Sagitário

10 CF Orlando Farias

Bench:
6 MF Ivica Petrovic
9 FW Libor Silhavy
18 MF Olivio Rui Costa

The referee for today’s game was Stellan Offsajed so you could guarantee there would be a casualty or two… Rodas and Alguem kicked things off and the 32nd Ultimate League cup final got underway. Immediately upon kick off, Alguem tried a cheeky lob shot on goal to try and catch Vasic off guard but his shot testing bore no fruit other than putting the ball out of play for a goal kick to Dave FC. Vasic’s goal kick only succeeded in bringing the ball back to Lusitanian Warriors’ feet and following this, Dave FC saw fit to haul off a now slightly injured Despinic, who along with Ebejer and Sagitario were the core of their midfield, and bring on Rui Costa in his place. Alguem looked up for it today and his 11th minute shot smashed into the post. Agonizingly close to giving the Warriors the lead. Glaucio Tristao also had a chance before Ingham and Rui Costa were booked. The first half ended with the Warriors having the chances but not converting, Dave FC’s defensive strategy was working to some degree.

Both teams made half time changes, Petrovic came on for Oldair and Goitom replaced Tristao. The highly rated 23 year old midfielder Castelli, who is well on his way to becoming a great player, then had a chance in the 63rd minute but could not convert. Despite the lively nature of Alguem, he was replaced with Amor who had a noticeable impact in the previous rounds. The Warriors made their final change when Barrocas came on for Hansen, an interesting change for the Warriors as it reduced their midfield strength. But then, Warriors won their last two cup ties in extra time while Dave FC needed three consecutive penalty shootouts, is it any real surprise that this game went to extra time?

Barrocas had an early chance in extra time but the ball missed the goal. Right before the end of the first period of extra time, Lusitanian Warriors won a free kick. With no free kick taker on the pitch however, the ball was aimed at Castelli who failed to convert. The second half was when the Warriors usually came good, but Tiago would be nervous. Surely the Warriors weren’t going to let another trophy slip yet again? Berberich saw to that. The 28 year old was still very young as Warriors rose up the ranks and he wasn’t even in his prime by the time they reached the top flight, Berberich was only a substitute in the cup final against the Pandas. Now a regular starter and team captain, he fired his shot into the back of the net with Konichawa getting the assist. Warriors were 1-0 in front and once again it came in the 2nd half of extra time. Dave FC had no answer and Warriors had finally won a trophy. The Ultimate League’s nearly team who have been consistently competitive but for whatever reason had never won anything finally had a trophy, although as usual there was a disappointment behind the season as the Warriors had already been relegated from the top flight.

We caught up with Tiago after his side’s cup triumph for an interview.

XD: Congratulations on winning the Ultimate League Cup, how are you feeling right now?

Tiago: When anyone gets to their goals the feeling is satisfaction, pride, joy.... But beside all that i feel a kind of relief, because we've been so close in the past... We've actually even deserved it and I was beginning to think that we would never get to a major trophy, with the aging of the squad and the relegation we're facing. But the team proved me wrong and I'm very proud of them, above all!!!!!

XD: Let’s start from the beginning, what made you take on the Lusitanian Warriors job in the first place?

Tiago: The dream of taking them to the top of the world. We've made some wonderful things but, obviously, we never achieved that yet!!!! So, as long as they want me i will keep trying!!!!

XD: Your record with the Warriors is phenomenal; you won 7 consecutive divisions on your way to the top flight and reached a cup final, which you lost to Jesus and his Pandas. After that defeat, was there any indication that the Pandas team might be your biggest barrier to success?

Tiago: They really were (at least for two seasons). They were a great team then (and very well lead), and we just didn't have the resources to better them. But no one could say we didn't try. I think we've actually won most of the games we played against them, but in the end - one way or another - they'd get the trophies... About the cup final they were largely better, and deserved to win... Too bad for us cause it was (if I’m not mistaken) the only game we didn't won that season, and it would have been a nice ending to an incredible run (that lasted 7 seasons with only a fistful of defeats, always in the cup).

XD: In Season 30 you were one game away from winning the title, but as I’m sure you don’t need reminding, it all fell apart in the final game. Do you still have regrets about the way that season finished?

Tiago: Of course... Going on with my last answer, the Pandas we're once again our "archenemy". We had already lost the cup to them, but that season, despite their favouritism we were on the top of our game, with epic performances and results. We were on the lead of the league facing only the last round and I couldn't prepare the team for the last game, and we lost the title for them... We lost some trophies to them but to me it was the only time it was unfair, despite some bad luck we had here and there!!! Having no control over that was very frustrating, of course!!!

XD: Who’s your favourite player on the team?

Tiago: I really don't have one. We are worth for the whole. Individually, there are better players on almost every team we play, but we have a balanced team and that was our strength for this couple of seasons. The only section we are in clear disadvantage is the attack, but the rest of the team generally compensated for that, except for this season where it was a big problem!!!

XD: Do you watch the matches live, and if so, were you getting nervous over the lack of goals for a long period of time?

Tiago: I used to watch them live but i stopped a while ago, facing some disillusion towards the game, that lead me to not spent that much time online... Anyway, that lack of goals is no surprise. It's been like that all season, as explained above!!!!

XD: You will be competing in the XCL next season. Several Portuguese managers have taken part in the XCL in recent seasons to varying success, how well do you think this team can do?

Tiago: When I had doubts about our performances and thought this group needed renewal, they answered me with a cup, so I think anything is possible. If you ask me, I'd say we don't have that much chances, but in fact we have defied those chances so much times in the past, that I believe they could surprise everyone again. Of course that would be just that: a surprise. I'm happy just to play it and see some of my players on it before the end of their careers. I hope they could play with the joy and will to exceed of their coach!!!

XD: Why do you think Xpert Eleven has proven to be so popular in Portugal?

Tiago: I guess that's because we love football, we're kind of good in everything associated with that (at least if we consider we're a very small country with no power or resources), and we can play it for free (that’s kinda important because people here don't have money to spend on hobbies)

XD: Thank you and enjoy your success.

Tiago: Thanks and believe me: I FINALLY will.... GO WARRIORS

SparkaSpring FC 3-0 Jesus and his Pandas (Heidenreich ’10, Flynn ’49, Guterres ’83)
IFK Goteborg 0-3 Zvezda FK (Zsiroshegyi ‘7 ‘88, Bergvall ’75)

SparkaSpring’s team ratings were the talk of the town today after Jesus and his Pandas were dismantled in stunning fashion by the former XCL champions. In a 3-5-2 formation, Sparka’s ratings accounted for 19 defence, 23 in midfield and 20 in attack. Considering how the game treats ratings, that is surprising to say the least. So a bad start for the Pandas, but at least they should easily win their next XCL game, right?

So an unexpected XCL debut for IFK Goteborg, who only made it to this stage after reaching the cup final last season in the Ultimate League, but here they were and they were against the powerful, but paperweight squad of Zvezda FK, who only have 14 players in their entire squad. Goteborg were given a harsh introduction to life in the XCL however as Zvezda were irresistible. Inside just 7 minutes, Zvezda FK captain Clark Kent, nicknamed “Superman” by his team’s supporters, provided the cross which Jozsef Zsiroshegyi headed into the back of the net. The Goteborg defence were having trouble keeping up with the pace of Clark Kent, it’s almost as if he flew past them.

Worryingly for Goteborg, Zvezda’s midfield only got stronger as young Dejan Genije came off for Sjunne Ekenberg. Putte Wessel then provided the cross which Ludwig Bergvall headed into the net before Kristofer Lundgran set up Jozsef Zsiroshegyi to complete a 3-0 victory for the League of Champs side. Bad start for Goteborg…

FC Gheboaya 0-6 Jesus and his Pandas (Klincec ‘6 ‘8, Szilard ’11 ’19, Dubar ’38, ’67)
IFK Goteborg 0-2 EX6 (Ovarez ‘5, Maul ’90)

If only every XCL game could be against FC Gheboaya… Jesus and his Pandas had no trouble in dispatching Stergr’s youth as they won 6-0. And all of the goals came from three men. Klincec scored twice in 8 minutes, then Szilard made it 4-0 inside 19 minutes with a further two goals. Dubar made it 5-0 in the 38th minute and then added a sixth goal in the second half. Easy, now the game against Caricatos will prove where the Pandas stand in the group…

After the poor showing against Zvezda FK, IFK Goteborg needed to get back on track at home to EX6. But in their second home game, the Ultimate League Division 2 side were dismantled by the Division 1 Dream League side. Inside 5 minutes, Deivis Ovarez converted a free kick to give EX6 the lead, 38 year old keeper Feliciano de Deus was left stranded. EX6 then suffered a blow when Reed was injured, but fortunately for them they have been trained in the ways of the Dark Side of the Force. And Darth Maul demonstrated the power of the Dark Side after he headed in Dino Carmelo’s corner to seal a 2-0 victory in the 90th minute. His jump seemed unusually high and rumours are going round that he artificially increased his height of his jump through the use of the Force. We tried sending reporters to confirm this but they were all seemingly easily convinced that he didn’t. How strange…

Jesus and his Pandas 2-1 Caricatos FC (Dubar ’83, Klincec ’86) (Baquero ’74)
CFC Gun Crime 3-0 IFK Goteborg (Aprodu ’31, Enfield ’50, Ruger ‘88)

Well, Caricatos offered a big threat to the Pandas qualification and unfortunately for the Ultimate League side, Baquero opened the scoring. However, the Pandas turned it around when Dubar equalised before a Stanisa Klincec free kick sealed all three points.

It was a completely different story for IFK Goteborg, who were bottom of their group after 2 defeats in the opening games. But then again, they are a Division 2 side which is currently sitting bottom of the Ultimate League’s Division 2a and in the relegation zone with Cesaro Hyperforce of all teams being three points above them and Hudds admitted he was just happy to be in the tournament, not caring how well his team was to do in the competition.

They travelled to CFC Gun Crime who thankfully had no Sith Lords or superheroes in their starting 11. Would IFK manage to score a goal in the XCL? The answer is no, Herculano Vilas-Boas, who you may recognise from the last XCL as he was part of the Switch City Kings team that made the knockouts, came close but the quality of Lucian Aprodu, Lee Enfield and Albert Ruger saw CFC Gun Crime claim their first win in the XCL.

Caricatos FC 1-2 Jesus and his Pandas (Baquero ’79) (Klincec ‘8, Bobrov ’30)
IFK Goteborg 0-2 CFC Gun Crime (Gardia ’47, Ruger ’67)

Despite Jesus and his Pandas carrying teenagers in their starting eleven, they effectively sealed qualification with two games to spare, 6 points clear of 3rd place Caricatos but with a game against FC Gheboaya still to come Caricatos weren’t going to make up the points required to overcome the Pandas. Klincec gave the Pandas the lead through a free kick before Georgi Bobrov doubled the lead in the 30th minute. Baquero pulled one back for Caricatos but the Super League side were too late, they were heading for the exit door.

IFK Goteborg meanwhile were eliminated from the XCL after a 2-0 defeat to CFC Gun Crime. They weren’t expected to be challenging to get out of the group and so it has rightly proven with only one win in their last 5 games. Goteborg lost Svensson to injury early on and his replacement was 19 year old Seth Jones. You can imagine how that went down as Ruger and Gardia gave CFC Gun Crime an easy 2-0 lead

Jesus and his Pandas 3-0 FC Gheboaya (Bornes ‘4, Bobrov ’30, Abella ’33, Abella ’86)
EX6 3-0 IFK Goteborg (Ovarez ‘1, Neves ’58 ’80)

No surprises here. Jesus and his Pandas cruised past FC Gheboaya although their chances of winning the group are next to nothing with Sparka 3 points ahead and with a +11 goal difference advantage and as we know in X11 that’s usually impossible to make up. Meanwhile, already eliminated IFK Goteborg crashed against EX6, a result which sent EX6 through to the next round.

Jesus and his Pandas 0-0 SparkaSpring FC
Zvezda FK 4-0 IFK Goteborg (Zsiroshegyi ‘32 , Anderstedt ‘67, Bergvall ’86, Engren ’89)

Well, Sparka had nothing left to play for other than DV with the league title and qualification to the next round both sown up already. Still, wouldn’t you love it if when playing for DV your side was still good enough to be considered a full strength side? That’s exactly what Sparka were able to do while Jesus and his Pandas started the game with 5 teenagers in the starting lineup. And yet the game finished 0-0, thanks to a superb effort by the Pandas. No matter, Jesus and his Pandas were through to the knockout rounds to face Master League side Assault on Dark Athena, who at the time of qualification were in a ridiculous situation in the league of being 5th in the league and only just out of the relegation zone on goal difference but at the same time being only a point off top spot. Madness.

Meanwhile, there was a dramatic climax to Group E as CFC Gun Crime beat group leaders EX6, but if Zvezda FK beat bottom of the table IFK Goteborg by enough goals then they could qualify at CFC Gun Crime’s expense. And amazingly that’s exactly what happened. With the news coming through from The Armoury it didn’t seem likely that Zvezda would qualify despite going 2-0 ahead through Zsiroshegyi and Anderstedt, but when Bergvall scored it all changed. CFC Gun Crime got a late goal but amazingly Zvezda beat them out thanks to Asle Engren and qualified to the next round thanks to a single goal. One of the most dramatic finishes to an XCL group stage you are ever likely to see.

Transfers

AC Samba sold off former UL title winning midfielder Enrico Paris, and he wasn’t the only title winning player to leave as hours prior, Jesus and his Pandas sold star defender Samuel Gutierrez, one of the greatest defenders in Ultimate League history and the rock at the back for the Pandas, to League of Champs side Moghults Cowtitlers (5m). But those departures were all trumped by the departure of Loki Ladd (32/19) from Damocles to Super League side Majestic F.C (11m).

Big manager changes:

Remember when FK Deverika were taken over by Katapult and renamed Mastodontisk Mur? Well, Katapult was relieved of his duties and there may yet be hope for this team who were in the top flight only last season. New manager 2k has sacked the poor youths being carried as squad filler and things may be finally looking up for this team again.

Another former top flight side, Coliseu’s, now in Division 3a, appointed a new Romanian manager in Ioonut. However, after they were relegated Ioonut immediately resigned to be replaced by Portuguese manager Claudemiro who left former Golden League cup winners Carlisle Leisure to join the Ultimate League side.

After the season was over, Scottish manager TonyHamburger left Division 2 side Argentona FC. The manager had taken them from the depths of Division 8 when he took over back in Season 18 and over 14 seasons later took them up to Division 2 with a side that has a mixed of class older players and promising youths. His replacement was MichaelCritchton, who left a very young Forfar Boys side that had recently been relegated to Division 7 in a division that included two former Ultimate League champions (the former Ajax Treesdown and the former FC Kumonovo) on 0 points to throw himself into the Lions’ Den

And that’s it for this article. The Pandas era is over and a new champion now stands aloft with the trophy. But can Stiinta defend their title?
