The Ultimate Comeback - Part 2 |
So, last time we left you, a series of thrashings, including a massive win for The Rod Squad away to last season’s champions, Stiinta Bacau, left the team that only survived on goal difference last time out top of the league. In fairness, The Rod Squad had shown promise in their first season of the Ultimate League only for it to tail off towards the end, but with a stronger squad this time around they were proving to be the team to beat. We rejoin for the second leg of the double headers, starting with the home game against last season’s champions Stiinta Bacau

ROUND 8
Jesus and his Pandas 2-0 RAK (Klincec ‘4 ’42)
The Rod Squad 4-2 Stiinta Bacau (Rooke ‘2, Acombley ’20 ’33) (Astle ’41, Bernardo '58)
Dave FC 1-2 Steppenwolf Suckers (Delvecchio ’34) (Hollyfield ’11, Eriksen ‘39)
Guerrilla Renegades 2-0 Grand Rapids FC (Covarrubias ‘7, Gligor ‘79)
X11: Alnerud (Jesus and his Pandas), Donaldson (Steppenwolf Suckers), Melaugh (Guerrilla Renegades), Abdul-Latif (Jesus and his Pandas), Bornes (Jesus and his Pandas), Klincec (Jesus and his Pandas), Revell (Grand Rapids FC), Szilard (Jesus and his Pandas), MacLaren (Guerrilla Renegades), Acombley (The Rod Squad), Covarubbias (Guerrilla Renegades)
Oh yeah, it should probably be mentioned that in the cup round in between the double header, Stiinta Bacau suffered a blow when their only goalkeeper Ackram was injured. Not willing to put an outfield all rounder in goal, Stiinta spent money on a replacement goalkeeper. Only problem though was that the money was pennies on a 19 year old 4 skilled keeper in Negredo
Rod Squad took the lead inside two minutes through Rooke, followed by a couple of goals from Acombley who is proving to be one of the most feared strikers in the league. Astle pulled one back for Stiinta but Bixby restored the 3 goal advantage for Rod Squad. A late free kick by Lazaro Bernardo pulled one back for Stiinta but it was too late.
Suckers kept the gap between themselves and Rod Squad honest by beating Dave, but the Indian side were stubborn and drew level after Hollyfield’s opener thanks to Delvecchio’s equaliser. Eriksen however secured all three points to keep Rod Squad honest.
The Pandas extracted revenge on RAK thanks to Klincec. Grand Rapids however are still searching for their first away win as having dispatched Guerrilla Renegades, they went down to the same opposition 2-0, leaving W_A_R frustrated as he sees his team now 8 points behind Rod Squad. The Renegades’ front two, Covarrubias and Gligor scored the goals while Warg saw his effort disallowed
ROUND 9
RAK 3-3 Guerrilla Renegades (Bodin ’52, Viklund ’65, Lidqvist ‘91) (Rackner ’15 ‘84, MacLaren ‘60)
The Rod Squad 3-0 Jesus and his Pandas (Ablett’ 7, Neville ’44 ‘82)
Grand Rapids FC 1-1 Steppenwolf Suckers (Peplow ’78) (Hollyfield ’90)
Stiinta Bacau 1-0 Dave FC (Hanus ’90)
X11: Alnerud (Jesus and his Pandas), Melaugh (Guerrilla Renegades), Donaldson (Steppenwolf Suckers), McAnespie (Grand Rapids FC), Hagersten (RAK), Revell (Grand Rapids FC), MacLaren (Guerrilla Renegades), Ablett (The Rod Squad), Rackner (Guerrilla Renegades), Peplow (Grand Rapids FC), Evers (Grand Rapids FC)
2nd placed Suckers had an ominous trip away to Grand Rapids. While the Rapids have been awful away from home, they have been invincible at Riverside Park and a win for the Rapids would take them level on points with the Suckers. However, the Suckers showed exactly why they were 2nd in the league by fending off Rapids who had suffered a blow with an injury to Warg… until Peplow gave them the lead in the 78th minute. However, Hollyfield struck a late equaliser to ruin Rapids’ perfect home record. Great point for the Suckers, but in the grand scheme of things, this gave Squad the chance to extend their gap at the top.
Squad were playing the Pandas and showed exactly why they have been doing so well this season as they cruised to a 3-0 win with a goal from Collin Ablett and two goals from Timmy Neville to dump the Pandas in the relegation zone. Reigning champions Stiinta meanwhile left it late against bottom of the table Dave to seal all three points and take themselves out of the relegation zone, substitute Edvard Hanus scoring in the 90th minute. There was also a massive match in the relegation stakes between the Renegades and RAK and it was a great match too.
Rackner gave the Renegades the lead early on, but in the second half Bodin equalised. MacLaren gave the Renegades the lead again only for Viklund to equalise again. Rackner made it 3-2 from an indirect free kick but in a dramatic late twist, a free kick from Lidqvist secured RAK and point and left the Renegades teetering on the edge of the drop zone, albeit this time a point ahead of the Pandas rather than Stiinta.
ROUND 10
Jesus and his Pandas 1-0 Dave FC (Yamase ’64)
RAK 1-1 The Rod Squad (Stern ’50) (Hoffman ’29)
Stiinta Bacau 2-0 Grand Rapids FC (McImage ’19, Hanus ’51)
Steppenwolf Suckers 2-0 Guerrilla Renegades (Atkonius ‘6, Eriksen ’25)
X11: Alnerud (Jesus and his Pandas), Melaugh (Guerrilla Renegades), Yamase (Jesus and his Pandas), Abdul-Latif (Jesus and his Pandas), Bornes (Jesus and his Pandas), Ragnarsson (Grand Rapids FC), Szilard (Jesus and his Pandas), Klincec (Jesus and his Pandas), Lidqvist (RAK), Padurariu (Stiinta Bacau), Covarrubias (Guerrilla Renegades)
There was a huge shock as top of the table and runaway league leaders Rod Squad, who’ve won all but one of their game this season, drew against 7th placed RAK. It seemed like business as usual when Hoffman gave them the lead from the free kick in the 24th minute. However, just after halftime there was a huge shock as Stern crashed home an equaliser for RAK. The game ended 1-1, Squad have still only lost one game, but it gave the others the chance to catch up on them.
One of those teams was Suckers, who beat relegation threatened Renegades 2-0 with goals from Atkonius and Eriksen to close the gap to just 5 points. The Suckers and Rod Squad play each other on the final day of the season. The Pandas took advantage of this to jump out of the relegation zone with a win over bottom placed Dave, but only just, with Yamase scoring the only goal. However, the Pandas’ chances of survival suffered a major blow when Alnerud, perhaps the greatest goalkeeper in Ultimate League history, suffered an injury which will keep him out for three weeks in what could be his last ever season for the Pandas. As for Dave FC, that defeat to the Pandas meant they were now 10 points off the relegation zone and the only way they could avoid being relegated in Round 11 is if they beat RAK, Squad lost to Guerrilla Renegades and the Pandas lost to Grand Rapids. Speaking of that, Grand Rapids’ awful form away from home continued as they lost 2-0 to Stiinta, with goals from McImage and Hanus securing a win for the reigning champions as they moved to 3rd, though still 7 points off the leaders.
ROUND 11
Dave FC 3-2 RAK (Rui Costa ’11, Despinic ’25, Delvecchio ‘86) (Lidqvist ’23, Jorge ‘50)
Guerrilla Renegades 2-0 The Rod Squad (Melaugh ‘2, Gligor ‘67)
Grand Rapids FC 2-1 Jesus and his Pandas (Peplow ’43, Leadbeater ‘72) (Szilard ’25)
Steppenwolf Suckers 1-0 Stiinta Bacau (Rennie ‘6, Sireacu ‘63)
X11: Dunganstown (Steppenwolf Suckers), Melaugh (Guerrilla Renegades), Abdul-Latif (Jesus and his Pandas), Donaldson (Steppenwolf Suckers),Cherkasov (Guerrilla Renegades), Abella (Jesus and his Pandas), Ragnarsson (Grand Rapids FC), Szilard (Jesus and his Pandas), Rackner (Guerrilla Renegades), Peplow (Grand Rapids FC), Evers (Grand Rapids FC)
The stumble against RAK last week perhaps suggested a vulnerability in Squad’s armour, and they travelled away to Renegades weary of Suckers possibly munching into their lead. Thankfully for Squad, Freestone was back for them, a much needed boost in defence. This didn’t seem to stop the Renegades though, who took the lead early on through Melaugh. The Rod Squad don’t have the strongest of teams so it’s a testament to their manager that they are so far out ahead. But today it was all going wrong for them and they looked more like a team in disarray than the league leaders. The Renegades lost Andre to injury but that didn’t seem to stop them, and when Gligor made it 2-0, fans of Squad must now be fearing the worst. So, could Suckers respond and close the gap to just 2 points?
They had to play last season’s champions Stiinta. They made the perfect start when Rennie gave them the lead inside 6 minutes. Sireacu doubled the lead and while Stiinta gave the Suckers a game, they were unable to beat Dungastown in the Suckers’ net. All of a sudden, we have a title battle on our hands.
With Alnerud injured, an already daunting trip to Grand Rapids, who have yet to lose at home this season, was made even more so by the fact that Bornes had to fill in net for the Pandas. However, Szilard gave them the early lead inside 25 minutes, but any hope of holding onto that lead ended when Peplow equalised just before half time. Leadbeater then put Grand Rapids ahead inside the second half to secure the three points for Grand Rapids. A valiant effort for the Pandas, but still one that ends in defeat and with Renegades' win over The Rod Squad the Pandas were dumped in the relegation zone with three games to play
Speaking of relegation, the bottom two faced off in this round, the dream of Ultimate League top flight football for these two has been rather sour as they barely got any points, but on the bright side they are just two of around 77 teams who’ve played in the Ultimate League top flight, not many teams in the entire league system can say that. Dave went ahead early on inside 11 minutes before Lidqvist equalised from a trademark free kick. Two minutes later Dave were back in front thanks to Despinic, but just when they were ahead, Dave lost goalkeeper Vasic to injury as Hedenmalm lunged in on him. Just after half time, Jorge equalised and Bodin tried to head the ball into the net but makeshift goalkeeper Farias (Dave only have one keeper) was equal to it. RAK then went down to 10 men as Stern was sent off and Dave capitalised as Delvecchio turned his effort into the back of the net in the 86th minute to seal victory for Dave. It was only Dave FC’s second win all season, and delays relegation from the top flight for another round as they are just 7 points off safety, but surely they couldn’t survive now?
ROUND 12
RAK 0-2 Grand Rapids FC (Leadbeater ’72, Ragnarsson ’79)
Dave FC 1-2 The Rod Squad (Rui Costa ’53) (Ablett ’41, Mario ‘60)
Guerrilla Renegades 1-3 Stiinta Bacau (Annekov ’91) (Strugure ‘9, Hanus ’35, Valjavec ’48)
Jesus and his Pandas 0-3 Steppenwolf Suckers (Donaldson ’11, Eriksen ’56, Marmora ‘71)
X11: Dunganstown (Steppenwolf Suckers), Donaldson (Steppenwolf Suckers), Melaugh (Guerrilla Renegades), Abdul-Latif (Jesus and his Pandas), Leadbeater (Grand Rapids FC), Rodgerson (The Rod Squad), Szilard (Jesus and his Pandas), Abella (Jesus and his Pandas), Ablett (The Rod Squad), Farias (Dave FC), Evers (Grand Rapids FC)
After a rocky few weeks for Squad in which they have seen the lead they have built up diminished to just two points, could they put themselves back on track against nearly relegated Dave? Squad dominated the game and took the lead through Ablett just before halftime, to the relief of their fans. Paranoia has been setting in recently though and they weren’t sure if their team could hold onto the lead. Sure enough Rui Costa equalised in the 53rd minute, but Mario restored the lead moments later. Squad back to winning ways, but they knew it was far from over, especially with an away fixture on the final day of the season. As for Dave, this defeat meant that they were relegated from the top flight after just a single season in it. Sadly they were never at the races all season and they hit the top flight just as their team’s peak period was over, and one wonders what Metallica4 will be considering a rebuild.
Normally a game at 26 Bank Street would be a nightmare proposition, and it still is to some extent, but on this occasion, the home side were deep in relegation trouble and without a proper goalkeeper and the away team were title contenders. The Pandas couldn’t be relegated today no matter what happened, but Suckers needed to win to keep up with Squad ahead of a fascinating final day twist where the two will face off against each other. The Suckers took the lead through their captain, defender Donaldson of all people, who headed in Nehru’s corner and left Bornes stranded. Further goals from Eriksen and Mamora secured the three points for the Suckers and they knew that all they had to do now was beat RAK to set up a final day showdown with Squad. The Pandas were given hope that they could survive after Renegades were thrashed 3-1 by Stiinta. Strugure, Hanus and Valjavec ensured that the Renegades would have a clock ticking over their top flight future, having been in it since Season 30.
Duck for cover, Grand Rapids have won an away game. It was a win that also confirmed that RAK were relegated from the Ultimate League top flight after just a single season. The win came thanks to a trademark free kick from Leadbeater and a rare goal from Ragnarsson (he’s only scored 28 goals in his entire career and this was his first of the season). The team’s title aspirations were effectively over though but they seemed safe for another season in the top flight.
ROUND 13
Steppenwolf Suckers 4-1 RAK (Marmora ’36, Calado ’68, O’Brien ’76, Hollyfield ‘87) (Hedenmalm ’24)
Dave FC 6-1 Guerrilla Renegades (Delvecchio ‘3, Farias ’19 ‘39, Despinic ’29 ’83 ’88) (Covarrubias ’62)
The Rod Squad 1-0 Grand Rapids FC (Rodgerson ‘7)
Stiinta Bacau 0-0 Jesus and his Pandas
X11: Alnerud (Jesus and his Pandas), Abdul-Latif (Jesus and his Pandas), Bornes (Jesus and his Pandas), Yamase (Jesus and his Pandas), Donaldson (Steppenwolf Suckers), Despinic (Dave FC), Klincec (Jesus and his Pandas), Rui Costa (Dave FC), Sagitário (Dave FC), Farias (Dave FC), Covarrubias (Guerrilla Renegades)
Grand Rapids were looking to secure their place in next season’s Ultimate League, but to do so they would have to beat the league leaders Rod Squad, who were looking to remain in top spot and potentially win the title by beating Grand Rapids. However, Rodturner revealed in his pre-match press conference that the team had no money and form was desperately low, so this would be a difficult match. Until the recent collapse, Grand Rapids had been the only team to beat The Rod Squad this season. but Squad extracted their revenge, a single goal from Rodgerson was enough to seal victory, but it came at a price as Squad lost Ablett at the most inappropriate time, right before the game against Steppenwolf Suckers.
Speaking of the Suckers, a win over RAK would set them up for a final day showdown against Rod Squad, and they pretty much had to win to set it up. However, Hedenmalm gave RAK the lead in the 24th minute. Could the Suckers fight back? Of course, Marmora equalised. The Suckers were on top in general but were struggling to put away their chances. However, they found the breakthrough in the 68th minute when Calado headed in Marmora’s cross. They scored again when O’Brien found the net from Hollyfield’s corner and then proceeded to rest captain Donaldson before the big game against Rod Squad. Brendan Hollyfield wrapped it up late on and now the Suckers had to prepare for the biggest game in their history.
The Pandas brought back Alnerud in a last minute bid for survival. The game was a pretty boring affair with no real chances, but the slightly injured Alnerud got himself injured in the 88th minute to put a damper in the Pandas’ efforts to stay up, especially with direct relegation rival Renegades the final fixture of the season. The good news for the Pandas though is that they had the goal difference advantage so a draw would send the Renegades down. And that’s because already relegated Dave FC managed to defeat the Renegades, 6-1 in fact. A hattrick from Despinic, a brace from Farias and a free kick from Delvecchio sent CRaPoLoGy’s men into a last day decider against the Pandas to avoid relegation.

The two managers took their seats in the dugouts… well only one did as in a shock twist; Rodturner was nowhere to be seen. What was up with that? The game got underway and the Steppenwolf Suckers took the lead through Marmora. Sireacu doubled the lead but Rod Squad fought back afterwards, or at least tried to. Two chances from Rodgerson, one being a free kick, failed to trouble Dungastown in the Steppenwolf Suckers’ goal.
Hollyfield made it 3-0 in the second half but the Suckers suffered a crucial injury in Donaldson. The Suckers captain wouldn't be able to lift the trophy injured if his team won the title. Julien O’Brien made it 4-0 and something didn’t quite seem right. What had happened to Rod Squad? Wasn’t this the team that were leading the standings? They got one back though, as Rodgerson finally converted one of his free kicks. But it didn’t make any difference, Suckers were Ultimate League champions for Season 33 and Neno4 had become the first person to win the Ultimate League with two different teams in one of the most dramatic conclusions to an Ultimate League season of all time.
But that wasn’t the end of the drama. Hours after the match, Rodturner was sacked. What was up with that? It later emerged that he had been suspected of alternate accounts along with three other teams around the official leagues and then, when he failed to deny it, was suspended from his team. A stunning and completely unexpected twist to the end of the season, thankfully though the club lives on under new management.
Grand Rapids FC 2-3 Dave FC (Leadbeater ’31, Revell ’62) (Silhavy ’53, ’71, ’83)
Steppenwolf Suckers 4-1 The Rod Squad (Marmora ‘9, Sireacu ’16, Hollyfield ’46, O’Brien ’57) (Rodgerson ’78)
Guerrilla Renegades 0-0 Jesus and his Pandas
RAK 0-1 Stiinta Bacau (Graffman ’59)
X11: Enke (Guerrilla Renegades), Abdul-Latif (Jesus and his Pandas), Donaldson (Steppenwolf Suckers), Nehru (Steppenwolf Suckers), Melaugh (Guerrilla Renegades), Klincec (Jesus and his Pandas), Ragnarsson (Grand Rapids FC), Warg (Grand Rapids FC), Szilard (Jesus and his Pandas), Evers (Grand Rapids FC), Sireacu (Steppenwolf Suckers)
Elsewhere there was a crunch relegation match between the Renegades and the Pandas where the loser would be relegated. The Pandas were without Alnerud for this match but the game was a very tight affair with no goals. The Renegades dominated possession but couldn’t put their chances away, much to the delight of Jesus and his Pandas who live to fight another day in the Ultimate League but for how much longer?
Stiinta secured 3rd place ahead of Grand Rapids with a 1-0 win over already relegated RAK thanks to Grand Rapids losing to a Dave FC side who’ve suddenly hit form and they consigned Grand Rapids to a rare home defeat, albeit a Grand Rapids side who were playing for DV. Libor Silhavy was the star of the show as he bagged a hattrick, with Leadbeater and Revell scoring for Grand Rapids.
And so, another season in the Ultimate League comes to an end, let’s take a look at the final standings:

A valiant effort from The Rod Squad but with a second half collapse it allowed the Suckers to nick in and steal the title at the very last moment, albeit in controversial circumstances after Rodturner was sacked hours after the game. Meanwhile, an unlucky final day defeat for Guerrilla Renegades means that after four seasons in the top flight they are relegated to Division 1. They join RAK and Dave FC, who only lasted a single season before they were relegated. Replacing them are the returning Lusitanian Warriors, back after a single season out of the top flight, newcomers AFC Brza who are in the top flight after spending 5 seasons in Division 1 and the return of Spirit of Shankly FC to the top flight after a 2 season absence

We caught up with Neno4 for another interview following his team’s title triumph.
XD: So, first time back in the top flight with your current team and you won the title, how does it feel?
Neno4: Oh man, it feels amazing. Before the season I liked the look of my squad, but never in million years thought I could compete against giant like Stiinta Bacau or Grand Rapids and I was in the danger zone after 4 rounds and to come back after that winning 7 of the last 8 matches is amazing. It has to be the most satisfying title I've won in X11 due to the fact I took over the Suckers as a lowly Division 7 team and build them and took them all the way from the very bottom to the very top.
XD: It looked like The Rod Squad were going to run away with it at one point, were you surprised by their second half of the season collapse?
Neno4: Well I was more surprised by their strong season more than their collapse and they were one point away from the title so it has to feel bad to miss out by just 1 point after such a strong season and spending so much time at the top of the table.
XD: You will be making a return to the XCL next season. The last time you were in it the XCL was dominated by Swedish teams but now there is a more consistent standard among the entrants. How well do you think the Suckers can do?
Neno4: After winning this title I feel I accomplished almost everything there is to accomplish on X11. Well almost is the key word as the XCL is the pinnacle of this game and the last step to Ultimate greatness. So of course I'm gonna do my best to go as far as possible, but I gotta be realistic that playing with a conveyor belt team building there will be much stronger squads than mine. But why not go on a surprise run there. It will be the Ultimate Cinderella story.
XD: Do you remember how far you got in the XCL last time you were in it?
Neno4: I won...1 match that is. Back then I also was a surprising Ultimate League winner with a weaker squad than the rest so the XCL was always gonna be a tough task playing against those Swedish giants, but for a rookie manager I did my best. Now the gap is much closer between all the teams in the XCL and should be a more interesting experience.
XD: Can Steppenwolf Suckers retain their Ultimate League title or will you have to sacrifice a season of competitiveness to ensure the team is sustainable?
Neno4: I'm gonna try to play on all 3 fronts as I go in every match to win it no matter who the opponent is and how my squad looks at the moment. And I like the look of my squad at the moment. The core is the same as last season and I can play with the same squad for 2-3 more seasons while bringing youth in different areas, especially the midfield for next season. But we will have the mark on our backs next season as defending Champions and the competition will be even tougher with some very strong teams coming from Division 1 so it should be very interesting season.
XD: Thank you and congratulations on becoming the first manager in Ultimate League history to win the title with two different clubs.
Neno4:Thanks for having me and I hope we will do another one at the end of next season :)

Cup news:
Round 5:
This round saw the exit of Guerrilla Renegades from the cup. They lost against Division 2c side Burbled FC Warriors, with a single goal from Rincewind knocking them out of the cup. There were other shocks too, Division 1 side FK Vucje also were knocked out by Division 4 side Truni, in the same round that the leaders of Division 1a, 6th seeds and last season’s quarter finalists Brza, also fell, albeit to Vila Real FC who made it to the last 16 last time round. The same couldn’t be said for Grand Rapids, who were another casualty of the 5th round, losing in extra time to Division 4 side Bayern München who recently gained the services of well known Slovenian manager Pilatus74.
Clem Legacy were handed another tough tie against another Division 2 side in Everton. The side formerly known as Madrepo Rio Plate when they were in the top flight were now under the command of Romanian manager Aegir and Boland’s single goal meant that that Clem Legacy's Boudot had to put in the equaliser. Penalty misses by Yamamura and Tagusagawa ensured Clem Legacy’s safe passage to the next round.
Reigning champions Stiinta Bacau had a tough tie against All StarS-Steaua of Division 2, a fellow Romanian team, and the defence had to be on top of their game after they lost Ackram to injury, Stiinta however made it through with a single goal. If you wanted an underdog to look out for, Division 5 sides Swann and Helmet, Elbasani, Real Peeps, Frastappa, SteauA89, Myrgasa United, Westella and The Owls all made it to Round 6
Round 6:
Warriors continued their smooth progression through the cup, finally knocking out FC Diana-Juniorii who’d earlier claimed the scalp of Division 2 side COLOSSVS INVICTVS. Last season’s semi-finalists Laguna, now of Division 3, would not make it to the semis this time around as they were knocked out by Cairo Nightboats. Laguna have proven to be difficult opposition for some despite their relatively low division but the Division 1 side Cairo Nightboats had no problem knocking them out. Vila Real FC also fell, losing to last 16 finishers from a couple of seasons ago in Joelitos FC. Division 5 side SteauA89 also progressed, knocking out former top flight side (currently Division 3) Riises Rockets. Frastappa also progressed but all the other Division 5 sides were knocked out.
Division 1 side Calandracas fell to Division 3 team Autoptg, while Division 2 opposition Bayern de los Caidos lost to Green Orange. Another Division 2 side and one that went far last season, Pirates F.C, could not repeat their cup heroics and went out to former cup finalists George Best, Clem Legacy drew their biggest test when they were paired up against former cup winners Spirit of Shankly FC of Division 1. And this proved to be too much to overcome for the Nigerian side as SoS won 3-1 to progress into Round 7. Also up against Division 1 opposition were JK Besiktas as they took on Bestro, however, on this occasion it was the Division 2 side that came out on top. Finally, an all Division 2 clash between Strathmore Saints who’d knocked the Pandas out of the cup, and Sporting da Quinta, was settled in favour of the Portuguese side.
Round 7:
So, just 32 teams remained, we were getting into the business end of the cup now. Who would announce themselves as contenders and who would fall?
Warriors kept up their cup defence with a 2-1 victory over Gem, Stiinta cruised to an easy victory over SteauA89 and Kyotiez Killerz got past SL-Benfica. But there was a big tie in this round between Division 1a side SoS FC and Division 2c side JK Besiktas, although JK Besiktas were contenders for the whole thing with their squad strength. So who would come out on top? Well, this turned out to be a bit of a thriller. Terreros gave Besiktas the lead before Gannedahl doubled it. However, SoS fought back through Wilhelm and Kirkby to make it 2-2. Burlett then put SoS into the lead in what turned out be the winning goal as Tabuas missed his penalty in the 90th minute and spurned the chance to take the game to extra time. Besiktas’ cup run ends against former winners Spirit of Shankly.
Bayern München e.V, which’d knocked Rapids out of the cup, could not get past Partizan Belgretna of Division 2b who won thanks to the mercurial talents of Beca. All the remaining top flight seeds marched on into the last 16 while Sporting da Quinta dispatched Division 3 side ADO Bang Kae. The big surprise however was that Division 3 side Boaedi knocked Division 1 side Cairo Nightboats out of the cup. Other shocks were Division 5 side The Owls knocking out Division 3d promotion chasers and former cup finalists George Best XI and another Division 5 side in Frastappa knocking out Division 3’s Autoptg. So 2 Division 5 sides had made it to the last 16 of the cup:
Round of last 16:
So here we are, only 16 teams were left in the cup and one of them would win, but which one? Here’s how the fixtures were drawn and here’s how the games played out:
The Rod Squad 0-2 Lusitanian Warriors (Amor ’26, Hansen ‘67)
Bad Beat City 0-1 Stiinta Bacau (Graffmann ’51)
Spirit of Shankly FC 1-2 Kyotiez Killerz (Wilhelm ’76) (Khabibulin ’85 ’90)
Sporting da Quinta 0-1 Partizan Belgretna (Lagartinho ’83) (Beca ‘9, Landucci ‘76)
Boaedi 0-0 Joelitos FC (Joelitos FC win 7-6 on penalties)
Steppenwolf Suckers 3-2 Falkirk Flyers (Rennie ’70, Hollyfield ’92, Eriksen ‘91) (Ponte PEN ’52, Glasscow ‘80)
RAK 1-1 Posh All Stars (Hedenmalm ’56) (Ross ’36) (Posh Allstars win 5-3 on penalties)
The Owls 1-0 Frastappa (Lindbom ‘6)
After a relatively easy passage through the cup, holders Warriors had to play runaway Ultimate League leaders Rod Squad. These two were both in the top flight last season of course and both were top of their respective divisions this season. It promised to be a close game and a team that would be difficult to call a winner from. That said, the Warriors were in a 3 game a week schedule at this point. Rod Squad had a key player in Mathias Freestone injured so lined up in a 3-5-2 formation while the Warriors lined up in a 4-5-1 formation. The Warriors took the lead through Amor in the 26th minute. Hansen doubled the lead in the second half and Rod Squad were consigned to what was only their second defeat this season.
There were other big games in this round, Division 1 side Spirit of Shankly took on Division 3 side Kyotiez Killerz. Wilhelm gave Shankly the lead, but a dramatic comeback by Killerz saw them go through into the quarter finals. Evgeny Khabibulin was the architect, scoring in the 85th and 90th minutes for a dramatic turnaround.
Division 1 side Flyers took on top flight side Suckers. Both these teams have managers who’ve looked for sustainability, although the Suckers were sidetracked from that somewhat this season with high profile purchases. It was a close game and despite Seymour Red being the ref, the Flyers decided to push harder to try and get a result. This often meant that they were carded and gave away free kicks, but Purser was easily able to deal with Eriksen’s efforts. However, the Flyers were awarded a penalty in the 52nd minute which Ponte tucked away into the net. Scott Rennie equalised later on but Glasscow put the Flyers back into the lead 10 minutes later. But just when the Flyers thought they were through, Hollyfield’s 92nd minute strike brought the game to extra time. And then Eriksen finally found the back of the net in the 91st minute from a free kick to give the Suckers the lead. That is rather confusing, as the times imply that the third goal was scored before the second… A penalty for the Suckers was given in the second half of extra time… but in a huge shock the Suckers’ captain Donaldson missed it. It didn’t matter though, the Suckers were into the Quarter Finals.
An all Division 2 clash between Sporting da Quinta and Partizan Belgretna was settled in favour of Partizan, while top flight side RAK were taken to extra time and penalties against Division 3 side Posh All Stars and a penalty miss by Nascimento, a surprise considering how cool he is with taking penalties, saw RAK crash out of the cup. Stiinta made it through thanks to a solitary goal by Ingmar Graffmann while Division 3 side Joelitos, who’ve been on a charge up the divisions and have a squad value of 169 million econ, struggled to get past fellow Division 3 side Boaedi, only making it through in a close penalty shootout contest.
A dream draw for Division 5 sides The Owls and Frastappa who guaranteed that a Division 5 side would make it to the quarter finals. That said, the Owls have strong pedigree having been in Division 3 at one point and making several runs to the last 16 of the cup. Lindbom gave The Owls the lead in the first half but Frastappa were dominating possession. However they were unable to beat Owls goalkeeper Greenacre and The Owls are in the Quarter Finals for the first time in their history.
Quarter Finals
Lusitanian Warriors 1-0 Steppenwolf Suckers (Bjarne Hansen ’20)
Stiinta Bacau 2-1 Joelitos FC (McImage ’46, Graffman ’64) (Reidarsson ’41)
Kyotiez Killerz 0-0 The Owls (Killerz win 4-1 on penalties)
Partizan Belgretna 0-1 Posh All Stars (Yombi Ayakan ‘39
After dispatching RAK on penalties, people began to sit up and take notice of Posh Allstars, even more so after they eliminated former top flight side Partizan Belgretna to progress to the semi finals for the very first time. Posh All Stars’ former managers include former world number 1 MarioMeirelles of all people, and he would no doubt been pleased with how his old side have come on under Denga, progressing from Division 5 to Division 3 in the last few seasons, sitting in a promotion challenge to Division 2 and making it to the semi finals of the cup. Yombi Ayakan was the hero as he turned in Edward Speed’s cross past Fidelio Paganini to score the only goal of the tie.
Division 5 side The Owls continued to work wonders as they took Kyotiez Killerz of Division 3, one of the strongest sides left in the competition, to penalties. However, Kyotiez keeper Dave Rees is one of the strongest keepers in the Ultimate League, with 16 skill bars at just 27 years of age, so they were always going to have the advantage on penalty kicks. Rees’ acrobatic saves were in contrast to those of Greenacre’s and the Killerz progress into the semi finals.
The big game of the round was between Warriors and Suckers. Tiago’s men are looking to win back to back UL cups but to do that they had to defeat title challenging Steppenwolf Suckers. There was only one goal in this game unfortunately but it was scored by Hansen to keep the Warriors’ dream alive. The UL has been used to cup domination in recent seasons thanks to the Pandas, can the Warriors make up for lost time?
Finally, Stiinta’s defence of their league title looks unlikely, but they can seal a return to the XCL next season by winning the cup. They dispatched Joelitos, but not without difficulty and it was looking bleak at half time when Reidarsson gave Joelitos the lead. However, McImage levelled the game just after half time. Graffman then secured passage to the semi finals for Stiinta and it is only the second time they have made it to this stage. On the first occasion, they were dispatched by Jesus and his Pandas on penalties.

Semi finals:
Lusitanian Warriors 2-1 Posh All Stars (Pirelli PEN ’72, Lucas ‘84) (Speed ’81)
Kyotiez Killerz 4-0 Stiinta Bacau (Seabury ’18, Khabibulin ’44 ‘70, Just ’59)
So then, two of the biggest teams in the Ultimate League at the moment took on two measly Division 3 sides… OK, that’s being harsh as Posh All Stars and Kyotiez Killerz were both good teams. But at any rate, this was a crucial match for these teams for a once in a lifetime opportunity to reach the cup final and prevent the expected heavyweight clash between the two teams representing the Ultimate League in the XCL.
Posh All Stars managed to hold out until half time to get a draw. But in the 72nd minute, Warriors won a penalty! Pirelli stepped up and scored. Posh Allstars however equalised through Speed, who got on the end of a Yombi Ayakan cross to make it 1-1. Could someone get a winner or would we be going to extra time? Well, 3 minutes later substitute youngster Lucas put the Warriors ahead from Konichawa’s pass and then Posh Allstars suffered a double blow, losing Cabarkapa to injury (young Silva replaced him) and then seeing Ardiles sent off. They did have a last chance to take it to extra time though, but Kassine was on hand to punch away DRoss’ effort. Lusitanian Warriors were in the cup final once again.
Both Stiinta and the Killerz were looking for their first ever final appearance, but which one would get it? Well, Killerz took the lead through Seabury in the 18th minute. One of the most influential men in the Killerz’ run to the final, Khabibulin, then double the lead before Just made it 3-0. Stiinta were being taken to the cleaners and Khabibulin got his second in the 70th minute. Stiinta thought they had pulled one back when Padurariu put it in the net, but the goal was disallowed. In the end, Killerz thoroughly deserved their victory and for the first time since Season 20 we would have an all Portuguese final.
Final:
So, the 33rd Ultimate League Cup final would be all Portuguese affair between Division 1b champions and cup holders Lusitanian Warriors and Division 3f promotion chasers Kyotiez Killerz. In five previous attempts the Killerz have never beaten the Warriors (naturally they have been drawn in the same division as each other on four previous occasions during the Warriors rise to the top) and with the two knowing each other well from a private league, but not necessarily having a mutual respect for each other, this promised to be an interesting final. Shark Utd manager Hertz_Van_Rental compared TiagoM. Vs. Freddysophia in the Ultimate League Scribble as being like “Mourinho vs. Villas Boas”, an apt comparison with two Portuguese managers going up against each other with seemingly very different ideas on the game.
Lusitanian Warriors’ road to the final as holders began in the 2nd round against Inainte Modelu. Not surprisingly as the lowest seed left in the competition, they were thrashed over both legs. Division 5 side Optimus Prime XT followed but unfortunately for them, the Warriors proved to be an upgraded Megatron and proceeded to breeze past them. From that moment on it was safe progression to the final as FC Beira Mar, Molas, FC Diana-Juniorii and Gem all fell before the first difficult match in the last 16 against The Rod Squad. The Warriors managed to beat both then and Steppenwolf Suckers which indicates that they may have a great chance at a title next season in the top flight. Finally, a win over Posh All Stars of Division 3 saw the Warriors take their place in the cup final.
Kyotiez Killerz’ road to the final began with two massive wins against Like Lambs. They followed that up with a win and a draw against Irmaos Unidos. A win over Polecats FC was followed by a win over Division 3 side Jackie Stamps FC. The 6th round saw them overcome Division 5 side Real Peeps by 2 goals to nil before beating SL-Benfica by 2 goals. A somewhat controversial win over Spirit of Shankly FC followed in the last 16 before The Owls were knocked out in the quarter finals. Finally. reigning Ultimate League champions Stiinta Bacau were knocked out by the Killerz to set up an all Portuguese final.
Lusitanian Warriors lined up in a 3-5-2 formation with Rodolfo Amor and Ze Alguem paired up front with each other while Kyotiez Killerz also lined up in a 3-5-2 formation with defender Gijs van Dalum partnering main striker Armin Just up front while Kurt Flynn was preferred to Simao Rui Costa in midfield. The two teams lined up as follows:
Lusitanian Warriors
1 GK Sidi Kassine

5 CB Raimond Weissenhauser

The match got underway as the two managers kept their distance from each other on the touchline. The Warriors were looking to defend their cup, the Killerz looking to win it for the first time. This wouldn’t be an easy game for the Warriors though, as Killerz’ keeper Rees is one of the finest in the Ultimate League, with 16 bars of skill at 27 years of age. Tensions began flaring when Horrocks was yellow carded for handball and 4 minutes later he picked up a knock. Warriors took the lead in the 19th minute through Pirelli who side footed in Hansen’s corner but it was controversially disallowed by referee Ian Hartmann. The Warriors tried again in the 36th minute and this time the lead was truly theirs, Ze Alguem putting the ball into the net from Konichawa’s pass. Three minutes later Amor had a miss hit shot on goal but that came to nothing. Half time and as things stood, Warriors would retain the cup. Could the Killerz respond in the second half?
The Warriors won a free kick early on in the second half, which was tapped to Amor, but he missed his subsequent shot. The Killerz countered and Mazzeo had the chance to level things up, but he was unable to do so. Flynn then had a chance with a flick header on goal. Realising that things were getting away from them, the Warriors brought on Barrocas in the 60th minute. The change gave them new impetus as Amor had a couple of chances, but Rees stood tall and didn’t allow the 20 year old striker to score. But in the 82nd minute, Castelli doubled the lead and looked to have sealed the Warriors’ name on the trophy for another season. Van Dalum pulled one back in the 91st minute, but it was far too late to stop the Warriors from winning a trophy. After spending an eternity in the shadow of the Pandas, Lusitanian Warriors had not one but two cups to show for their efforts, the new cup kings without a doubt. They also won Division 1b so it was a league and cup double for them (although not the sort that’s usually considered to be the double) and so they will be back in the XCL next season. It was a valiant effort from the Killerz to reach the final but they could not get one over their old nemesis in the end.
We caught up with Tiago after his cup victory to ask him about it.
XD: Congratulations on defending the Ultimate League Cup. How do you feel about it?
TiagoM: It's a wonderful sensation. We won the previous edition, but that doesn't take an inch of our pride in this second achievement!!! I' very proud of this team, and what we done this season!
XD: You also claimed promotion back to the top flight, so combined with the cup win is this the Warriors’ greatest season ever?
TiagoM: The return to the top flight was our major goal this season, and I hope the cup win, and the elimination of some major teams, can give us the confidence we need to present ourselves at better levels of performance in the next season. Our last season on the top was very bad. We started to put more focus on squad renewal, and missed our chance on the title by a year because that was also the year the Pandas started to weaken. About this season being our best ever, i don't think so. It was certainly the longest, but i think we didn't had opposition in the league and on XCL we could have done better...
XD: What was your reaction to seeing that you would have to face Freddysophia in the cup final?
TiagoM: I felt joy because in that moment i knew that the cup would definitely come to Portugal. At the same time i felt a certain apprehension because i knew the manager on the other side, who is experienced and qualified, and knew we could pass some hard time to win the trophy. Thats just what I said to the team. On the paper we might be considered stronger, but we had to prove that on the pitch because, at the minimum hesitation, Freddy and his team would certainly take advantage. Glad we did just that... Anyway, I’d like to congratulate Freddysophia for his great run. I'm sorry we had to end it before his goal. It was a mixed feelings match!!!!
XD: You will be back in the XCL next season, you had a very difficult group last time out with two of the favourites and a double winner, and yet with one game to go you had an outside chance of qualification, can the Warriors reach the knockouts next time out?
TiagoM.: The group was in fact a real nightmare. Perhaps the hardest on the competition. Anyway, we didn't let that affect us and I think we did a couple of good matches, but we didn't had the luck on our side. Facing the last match, we could be in a better position but we weren't, and thinking we could go at the Tour de France's home and win, wasn't really a "chance of qualification". About the next edition, we want to make better, but that depends on the group we're in, because we have to face the fact that, in this competition, we are a vulgar team. Luckily we have a heart and soul the size of the world, and we never give up, so you never know!!!!
XD: During your cup run to the final you knocked out The Rod Squad and Steppenwolf Suckers, the two teams competing for the title this season? Does this give hope for the Warriors being able to compete for the title next season?
TiagoM: That is our goal. Of course we know our chances but a new season is always a open book, and we will try our best facing opponents on a match to match basis. On our last run , things didn´t start well and we took a decision (turn ourselves more to the squad renewal), and if this time things start the same we might do just the same, but if we start winning we will proceed fighting to the end, match to match, never dazzled by our success. About the Rod Squad and Sucker's wins this season, i think it doesn't matter that much. Of course, it improves our confidence but we're talking about one match versus a long run, and the fact that the opponents were competing for the title could've meant they put less focus on the cup, facilitating our job. In sum, we're gonna try the trophy, but in an uncompromised way, facing each match on its own, and the only thing we know (and matters) is that we'll have to win the matches. We can never say, "we lost today but we win the previous season, so give us the points!!!". We'll have to do it again, and again and again...
XD: Thank you and once again, congratulations.
TiagoM: Thank You. Go Warriors!!!!!!!

Stiinta Bacau 1-1 PFC Belgrade (Bernardo ’62) (Cristof PEN ’78)
Lusitanian Warriors 0-1 Tour de France (Hammerhand ’86)
Stiinta made a positive start to their XCL debut with Hanus particularly lively. PFC Belgrade came into the game a bit more in the second half however, and after Bernardo had given Stiinta the lead, Cristof equalised for the Major League team. The point was nothing less than both teams deserved and Stiinta pick up a point in what looks likely to be one of the most wide open groups.
Lusitanian Warriors however made their debut against Tour de France, who won the Super League double last season and are one of the big favourites to win the whole competition. With the best goalkeeper in Flenning and several brilliant players, they were going to take some stopping, but the Warriors have beaten a similar team in the Pandas before. On this occasion however, Tour de France dominated the match and won thanks to a goal by Hammerhand. The Warriors have some very tricky games coming up but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Tour de France as one of the qualifiers
Basica FC 1-0 Stiinta Bacau (Dalbjorn ’17)
FC Laranjas Podres 3-1 Lusitanian Warriors (Buckle ’10 ’67 ‘85) (Pirelli ’37)
The clash of the champions in this group as Stiinta Bacau took on Basica FC, unfortunately for Stiinta they were overrun by Basica FC, who took the lead through an Dalbjorn free kick. Basica FC however lost Silva to injury, but unfortuantely Stiinta posed no threat in this game and were still waiting for their first ever win.
A tie of interest in Group E saw last season’s XCL runners up FC Laranjas Podres take on fellow Portuguese team Lusitanian Warriors, and it was clear what TiagoM. thought of his chances in this game when he set his team up in a 5-3-2 formation. Buckle gave Laranjas Podres the lead, but Pirelli crashed in the equaliser just before half time. Tiago’s strategy seemed to be working, but soon Buckle got his second of the game and eventually got his hattrick. Two games, two defeats for Lusitanian Warriors.
Stiinta Bacau 1-0 ÄIBK Fc (Astle ’64)
Lusitanian Warriors 1-1 Dunarea Bralia (Natalino OG ’79) (Natalino ’77)
Stiinta Bacau have had a mixed start to life in the XCL, but they got their first win against AiBK Fc, with Astle scoring the only goal of the game. With the group so tight and evenly matched, Stiinta have jumped into 2nd place as a result.
The XCL hasn’t gone well for Tiago so far and it seemed likely that his team would be exiting in the group stages, but could they get something against Dunarea Bralia? Despite dominating possession, the Warriors found themselves on the back foot against Dunarea Bralia, who eventually took the lead in the game through Silvio Natalino. However, in rather hilarious circumstances, after giving his side the lead, Natalino put through the ball into his own net, so it was all square again. The Warriors were finally making their possession count and took the lead through Ze Alguem… before the goal was ruled out for offside. They pressured Dunarea Bralia but it came to nothing and Tiago is still looking for his first win in the XCL, but at least his team were off the mark, doing better than Ultimate League cup entrants have done in recent seasons (i.e., 0 points). There was also a controversial result in the other group game…
ÄIBK Fc 1-3 Stiinta Bacau (Vasa ’27) (Graffman ‘9 ’43, Bernardo ’29)
Dunarea Bralia 1-1 Lusitanian Warriors (Halewood ’14) (Amor ’82)
A great day for Stiinta Bacau fans as in one of the most competitive groups in the division, other results went their way and a 3-1 win over AiBK Fc away from home thanks to goals from Graffman and Bernardo sent them top of the group, PFC Belgrade’s win over Basica FC paving the way for them to move top. The Ultimate League may have lost its big team to old age, but at least the new Ultimate League champions were holding their own in the group. The Romanian community were delighted to see Stiinta top of the group, but they know the last two games against PFC Belgrade and Basica FC will provide a clearer picture of where they stand.
Lusitanian Warriors however look very unlikely to make it out of the group. A second consecutive draw against Dunarea Bralia left them with it all to do, and with matches against FC Laranjas Podres and Tour de France still to come it looks unlikely that they will be progressing into the next round. They were grateful that a late goal from Rodolfo Amor clinched them a point.
Stiinta Bacau 2-1 Basica FC (Padurariu ‘3 ’70) (Grimaudo ’11)
Lusitanian Warriors 2-0 FC Laranjas Podres (Berberich ’62, Prasinha '76)
Stiinta stayed top of Group G after a big win over one of their nearest rivals Basica FC, who were just two points behind the Romanians. Padurariu was the hero as his two strikes cancelled out Grimaudo’s lone effort. What’s more, 2nd placed PFC Belgrade lost to bottom of the table AiBK Fc, which meant that Stiinta Bacau were through to the next round as group winners. Congrats to Stoicem on an early qualification.
Fresh from being promoted back to the top flight of the Ultimate League and reaching the cup semi final, Lusitanian Warriors were on a high. But nobody expected them to be able to beat last season’s finalists FC Laranjas Podres. They did exactly that though. A huge blow early on saw them lose Castelli, forcing Barrocas to take his place but they didn’t need Castelli as Berberich and Prasinha netted goals which sees the Warriors close onto a single point off Dunarea Bralia and just two off Tour de France. If they could beat Blu3red’s team in the final round and Dunarea lost to Laranjas Podres, then Lusitanian Warriors would seal the most unlikeliest of qualifications to the second round.
PFC Belgrade 0-0 Stiinta Bacau
Tour de France 3-0 Lusitanian Warriors (Hammerhand ’19 ‘57, Varinho ’34)
It was a goalless draw between PFC Belgrade and Stiinta Baca and nothing remotely interesting happened, although it did allow AiBK to jump both Basica FC and PFC Belgrade to get through to the next round of the XCL.
The dream scenario was always going to be hard to pull off and Lusitanian Warriors exited the XCL away to Tour de France with a comprehensive thrashing, with TdF topping the group in the process. Hammerhand was the star of the show, scoring twice and setting up Varinho in the process. The Warriors were out of the XCL but they had the chance to get back in it next season two days later if they could beat Kyotiez Killerz in the cup final
Gunnsjons IK 1-0 Stiinta Bacau (Loura ’51)
A nightmare draw for Stiinta who came across one of the strongest teams left in the competition in Gunnsjons IK. That said however, the Xpert International side struggled to quality from the group, so they couldn’t be that strong right? The two teams took contrasting measures to counteract their ageing squads, Gunnsjons played 19 year old Arizmendi in midfield while Stiinta played 24 year old Florin Strugure. Sadly Gunnsjons legend Ciric, once the highest skilled midfielder in X11, is now getting on a bit and as a result is now a bench player. He came on for Camara in the second half however after the starting team failed to inspire against Stiinta. Loura gave Gunnsjons the lead from a free kick and the mere presence of Ciric had opened up the game a bit more, even if he wasn’t actually involved in anything. Alg doubled the lead before Ackram had to be alert to keep out Ciric. Advantage Gunnsjons then as we head to the second leg, and unfortunately for Stiinta, their team will get that little bit older once the Change Report comes around.
Transfer news:
The biggest transfer post-change report was LUSITANO (not to be confused with Lusitanian Warriors) spending 18 million econ on a new star midfielder in Octavian Gâlcescu. The midfielder is only 26 years of age but he has already hit 15 skill. In the top flight the Pandas continued the rebuild with the signings of Feliciano Lopes and Victor Luff for a combined 6 million econ while Steppenwolf Suckers added young midfielder Jancsy Demjen for 11.5 million econ as they look to prevent their midfield from ageing into oblivion.
Division 3 side Hammer Boyz IF signed former Romanian Stars midfielder Daniel Gana. The 17 bar midfielder significantly strengthens the team and they will hope he can help them into Division 2 next season. Leaving the UL for significant sums were IFK Goteborg midfielder Bert Helander for 12 million econ and ACM 1899 striker Benjamin Walmesley for 10 million econ.
Big manager changes:
Division 1a side Dream Team FC appointed a managerial rookie in ACardoso92. Some gamble to take by the already relegated side but that didn’t prevent their inevitable relegation.
The Ultimate League was stunned however following the conclusion of the season when The Rod Squad ended up in the Job Centre. The stunning dismissal of Rodturner left everyone bamboozled and confused and only later on was it revealed exactly why they were in the Job Centre. The manager who succeeded Rodturner was Jafiucampaeo, a Portuguese manager who leaves his old club Sporting Clude de Mundo which he left in Division 3 in the Super League. Ranked 394th in the world, he walks into a somewhat difficult atmosphere of a club that under most circumstances wouldn’t have their manager sacked. The club has been rebranded as Diablos de Alvalade.
The new season was created today and we would like to wish everyone the best of luck for the new season ahead.
