Ideal Start To Champions League Campaign
The Switch City Kings got their first Xpert Champions League campaign off to a great start this morning by defeating Romanian Stars 2-1. It was a big occasion for the club and they wanted to put in a strong performance in front of their home fans.

Although an experienced side on paper, the Kings looked like nervous school girls waiting for kick off.  Which was totally understandable given that the side on the other side of the field had been here before, were managed by a talented individual and had a class edge across all positions. Having said that they weren't here to make up the numbers.

They may have been nervous but it didn't show in their play.  Just 12 minutes into the game the Kings opened the scoring. Midfield magician Pietro Piller Cottrer sent a delightful cross to the far post.  Caetano Vaz attacked the pass with great gusto and headed the ball into the back of the net. The King Dome erupted! It was the dream start for the plucky lads from Australia.

In the 27th minute Devis Shakir was forced off with a slight twinge in his hamstring. Mr Shephunter didn't want to risk further damage and replaced him with the 21 year old wunderkind Desmond Broomes.

The game was a turning into an arm wrestle with neither side wanting to give the other any easy opportunities.Half time came about very quickly but importantly the Kings held a 1-0 lead.

During the half time break Mr Shephunter pumped his side up. They'd played beautifully during the first half and he didn't want them to let this lead slip away. In the 58th minute Kings' captain Franco Baressi went forward and almost scored from a header but the keeper was up to the challenge.

In a rare attacking raid, the Romanian Stars equalised through their forward Odion Ikhouria in the 62nd minute.  He was handfed a delicious ball into the penalty area by Freddy Foote. Could the game be slipping away from the Kings with the scores now level at 1 a piece?

The goal from the visitors could have sent the Kings 1 of 2 ways. They could go into their shells or hit back hard.  They chose the latter. They played like men possessed and refused to give the ball to their opponents.  They were creating massive amounts of pressure. Then in the 90th minute it came!

Alvaro Rubiera sent a cross to the top of the square. The pass seemed to catch the keeper out of position.  As he advanced towards where the ball was going, Vaz lept high and headed the ball over the keepers outstretched arms. The ball trickled over the line to give the Kings a 2-1 lead. Surely it was nearly time!

The board went up to show 2 minutes of injury time. The Kings had to hold on for just 2 minutes and they'd create history for the club and they did.The 2-1 win was a great way to start their XCL campaign.

Mr Shephunter was equal parts ecstatic and relieved after the game. "I had no idea how this game was going to go.  We were down 2 key midfielders and I couldn't see how we were going to aim up in the middle. I played Robbie Strummer who was still a few days away from being fully fit in the hope that we'd at least be competitive. I had grave concerns that we'd be run over the top of in our first Champions League game."

"Much to my surprise we actually won more ball and went on to win. This is truly a remarkable achievement for our club. The boys really put in against a hot side. This will give us confidence for the rest of the campaign."
