Keeping In Touch
The Switch City Kings kept in touch with division leaders Sons Of The Phoenix overnight thanks to a 2-0 victory over La Squadra Bella (LSB).  With their opponents adopting a negative style of play, the Kings put in a tradesmanlike performance to earn the three points.  As the season approaches the half way mark Switch City find themselves just one point in arrears of top spot.

As soon as the referee blew his whistle to start the match, it was apparent that the Kings would enjoy a considerable advantage in midfield.  Straight away they got on the ball and refused to hand it over.  Just 10 minutes into the game the home side were 1-0 up courtesy of a Robbie Strummer goal.  Following a corner, Klas Ahlin spotted Strummer lurking on the edge of the area. With the goalkeeper grossly out of postion he sent a well weighted lob goalward. It cleared the keeper and went in.The early signs were that the Kings were going to run away with this one.

The LSB keeper was getting caught out of position on a regular basis and in the 35th minute Caetano Vaz came close to lobbing over his head again.  Fortunately for him this time he got away with it.

Frustration was starting to slip into the LSB game.  In the 42nd minute LSB defender Nisse Oste was given a yellow card for one of the crudest tackles seen in years.  Thankfully for the Kings Ahlin is one tough hombre and was unscathed by the act.  Oste could consider himself lucky to have remained on the field.

Mr Shephunter was happy with his side's performance at the break but wanted the team to put the opposition away.  He knew that one goal would not be enough.

The Kings were finding it very difficult to break LSB down.  They were dominating possession but weren't able to do anything with it.  In the 70th minute Mr Shephunter decided he needed to liven things up so he brought on Stefan German and Desmond Broomes.

It was just the lift the Kings needed.  In the 77th minute the Kings extended their lead to two goals.  Herculano Vilas-Boas went on a run down the right flank before sending in a delightful ball where he found Ahlin waiting.  Ahlin climbed well above his opponent to head the ball into the back of the net.  Surely at 2-0 that would be the game for the Kings.

The Kings played the possession game for the final minutes of the game to earn the win.  Although the scoreboard only read 2-0, it was a dominant performance.

Mr Shephunter was happy following the game.  "I'm pleased we took the three points today.  The opposition had a few players missing and because of that played defensively.  I was glad that my lads were able to show patience and work for the goals.  We could have got cocky with our midfield dominance and been caught out on the break.  However the boys recognised the situation and played accordingly."
