30 - not the magic number?
On average, from a fourteen game season, thirty points would be a par score for promotion from any tier in the division or, at the very least, a place in the playoffs. But for Dwong Athletic, a cruel set of circumstances has robbed them the chance to even contest a place in Division 4 next season despite winning nine of their fourteen games.

Before kickoff, Dwong knew the permutations were against them. They had to hope that one of Foggia or Gateshead Tynebears slipped up and, if that didn't happen, that they could overturn a two goal swing in goal difference that was in the Tynebears' favour.

Early goals for Foggia in their game against already-relegated Portimonense suggested they were cruising towards the title and Dwong's attention was more focused on what would happen between the Tynebears and The Flipmode Squad 98 in their game.

After half an hour, Dwong went ahead through Baldomero Contador and for a brief moment, the playoffs were in sight. And a brief moment later, the sight was crucially snatched away. Robin Schenkel notched the Tynebears in front and within minutes, Peter Lorimer made it two.

Dwong's own game against Seafar Select wasn't a classic and neither team were really exerting authority despite Dwong's early goal. Further goals for Foggia - who would score 5 - and Gateshead Tynebears meant that Dwong's efforts were forlorn. A late goal for Caj Krona at least gave the visiting supporters a win to savour, even if their promotion bid was over.

Place Team GP W D L GF-GA Goal Difference Points
1st Foggia 14 10 1 3 48-16 32 31
2nd Gateshead Tynebears 14 10 0 4 38-21 17 30
3rd Dwong Athletic 14 9 3 2 26-12 14 30

Fabbyulous, through disappointment, voiced pleasure in his team's efforts.

"It's been a fantastic season for the neutral and we did so well to get as many points as we did, yet it's so disappointing to come so close, yet so far. It's especially annoying as we've actually lost the least games this season, we've just drawn one too many and it's cost us but if I had to point to a game that has cost us this season then losing to Portimonense when they were destined for the drop has to be the big one and meant even winning our last three games wasn't enough.

But anyway, congratulations to Foggia - who should've gone up last season - and Gateshead Tynebears, they finished above us and both deserve promotion, which I'm sure the Tynebears will achieve through the playoffs.

What's left for us? An interesting change report, a chance to refocus our promotion bid on next season where we'll be more experienced at the highest level. Hopefully we'll be able to score more next season since goal difference has let us down this season.

We only dropped 12 points all season and yet finished 3rd, these promotions aren't easy!"
