Svoboda edge crunch tie

BLUE DOGS 1 NK SVOBODA 2

NK Svoboda ran out 2-1 winners in a closely fought contest with fellow promotion rivals Blue Dogs to move two points clear at the top of Final League Division 6:38 with five games remaining.

The away fans must have feared the worst when star striker Vane Brezec went down under a robust challenge from Frankie Foote in the very first minute and had to be replaced by veteran Gregor Rydqvist - but within minutes a fellow stalwart had given their side the lead. A peach of a cross from Ambroz Matjasic completely stranded the defence and 35 year old Helmuth Becker leapt like a spritely teenager to flick a header beyond Abbe Wennegren in the home goal.

Neither side wanted to give too much away and a cagey first half looked to be set to end in Svoboda's favour before their usually solid defence slipped up. Percival Shields took a wild swing at an incoming cross and his sliced clearance fell at Foote's feet. He shifted the ball sideways to Daniel Duncan, who made no mistake in firing the ball beyond Naito in the Svoboda goal.

It was a hammer blow for Samlegend's men to take, but his team talk must have put a spring in their step because with just two minutes gone in the second half their energy and fluidity led to the winning goal. Nir Batra moved into the right hand channel after some neat interplay with the midfielders, and the full back whipped in a superb diagonal ball to find the marauding Daniel Pirih, whose header was just too powerful for Wennegren to keep out.

Blue Dogs pressed late into the game but their attacks failed to penetrate the Svoboda ranks and Samlegend's side held on for a vital three points that could prove crucial come November.
