Top Flight Here We Come
The Cummins Honey Badgers dusted off the disappointment of losing the Final League Cup Final this week to defeat Foggy Kickers in the last game of the season to claim the Division 1a title.

Entering the final round, the Honey Badgers were on top of the ladder with Foggy Kickers 2 points back in 2nd.  For the Honey Badgers to take the title they needed 1 of the 2 following scenarios to occur.  Firstly they could wrap the title up by simply winning.  However this would not be easy given their only defeat all season was at the hands of Foggy Kickers in Round 1.The second scenario involved a draw but we all know that it's not in the Honey Badgers nature to pack up shop and play for a point so scenario 1 it was.

The Burrow was pumping before kick off.  The 60,000 strong crowd were loud and proud anticipating a big game from their beloved team.  It took just 10 minutes for them to be rewarded for their vocal support.  Defender Luis Florentim made a bold run down the left flank.  Looking like he was going to be pinned in the corner, he sent a cross to the top of the square where Evan Cronan headed the ball past the goalkeeper.  The intent of the header was only rivalled by the celebration.

Through the middle stages of the first half the Honey Badgers mounted some awesome pressure.  They were rewarded for this in the 32nd minute when Dylan Dolan scored a miraculous goal.  Following a corner, Evan Cronan spotted Dolan continuing his run from the corner post.  He fed him a beautiful pass and with a nutmeg on the defender he created a one on one with the goalkeeper.  From an almost impossible angle he blasted it past the goalkeeper's flailing arm.  It was now 2-0 and the home crowd were going berserk.

Late in the 1st half Foggy Kickers had a free kick that narrowly missed the target.  IT was a key moment as 1 goal lead as opposed to a 2 goal lead would have dramatically changed the complexion of the game.

During the half time interval Mr Shephunter could be heard motivating his side for one last effort.  They were 45 minutes away from the title and he didn't want them easing off now.

In the 62nd minute Foggy Kickers once again came agonisingly close to reducing the margin to 1 goal.  Their free kick attempt cannoned into the woodwork and away from the goal.  With both sides looking to invigorate their sides, fresh players entered the fray.  For the Honey Badgers young players Ed Ingham, Toni Von Sibenthal and Max Adelgren came on in the 70th minute.

The substitutions had an immediate effect with the Honey Badgers increasing their lead to 3-0 in the 75th minute.Evan Cronan sent a ball right across the face of goal to a hard charging Dragan Zunic. With the defenders and goalkeeper stranded on the opposite side of goal, he put his foot right through the ball to put it in the back of the net.Supporters and players alike went off like frogs in socks as they knew that they had just claimed the title.

The remaining 15 minutes were a celebration for the Honey Badgers.  Both sides looked resigned to the fact that the game was effectively over.  As the full time whistle blew, Mr Shephunter fell to the ground on his knees and looked to the heavens.  He'd succeeded in getting his side to the top flight.

Mr Shephunter was an emotional man following the win.  "Wow what a win! It's been our goal all season to win the title so to see these boys raising the trophy is special.  I was concerned that the lads might be a little down after getting so far in the Cup and then losing in a shoot out in the Final.  Full credit to them though.  They're a special group and it's been an honour managing them.

"When I was hired to manage this club, the one thing the owner wanted was to see his club in the premiership. There you go boss....we're there!  We'll celebrate the title in style now."
