The 12 goals of Christmas |
Duarte 'Darts' Abreu scuds off the turf to meet the free-kicked ball into the box, and fashions it into the net, giving the Matchsticks an emphatic 3-0 victory over Malta in the cup. This is in the 95th minute of the match and shows the will-to-win of everyone in the Matchstick camp.
The away fans also play their part and burst into an adaption of a popular Christmas song, refashioning it 'The 12 goals of Christmas'; this to mark the twelve goals Matchsticks have scored in their last three matches.
"Twelve goals of Christmas? Aye that's rich," smiles manager Tony Brazil when asked about the song in his press conference, "it was tiring too, at that stage of the proceedings, to give it the exhaustive full version so fair game to them. I believe they are just reaching the final bit now, 'and a Telnov penalty'."
Brazil has sung the song line, and waits as the sarcastic applause dies down, "thank you. Three of those twelve goals have supreme importance as they were against then-league leaders ProViva as we beat them three one. The win makes us the fairy on top of the tree for Christmas."
The press mock with snorting laughter.
"Happy day!" Brazil sours, "I've been in worse places; this is a fairy-tale in Estadio Lucifer. Don't worry, I'm not going to do that song, but a few of the lads have got together to do the 'Twelve Days Of Christmas' for you. Some of the other lads will be helping out with the props."
Brazil is joined onstage by Telnov, Fouchet and Oliveria. They start the song and what happens next brings the good name of Xpert Eleven into serious rebuke. A fan posted the proceedings online, click here for the shocking footage.
