Ciroza KO'd |
Widzy Rangers were handed what appeared to be an unlucky draw for the 5th round of the cup, as they were paired against division 1's cup specialists Ciroza FC. In the previous 3 seasons, Ciroza had reached the quarter finals twice, followed by an appearance in the semi final last season. In comparison, 76th seeds Widzy Rangers hadn't made it past the 5th round of the cup in their previous 3 attempts. Could they upset the odds and go one better this time?
Probably not if you had watched the first half. Ciroza had Widzy chasing shadows as they dominated possesion, but chances were limited, with Ciroza having the only shot on target as Widzy ground their heels in and defended in numbers.
The second half kicked off, and within 7 minutes Widzy thought they had taken an unlikely lead through Andrew Mason's 52nd minute strike, but replays clearly show he was well offside.
And then came the cavalry...
Widzy Rangers made 3 substitutions in quick succession, with Eliott Ness, Vilner Snoman and Dougie Dickov all coming off from the bench. Their fresh legs completely changed the dynamic of the game. Rangers were now winning all the 50/50's and dominating the ball as the clock ticked down.
Then, with just 10 minutes remaining, the substitutes combined as Eliott Ness' threaded pass was lashed home emphatically by Vilner Snoman to make it 0-1! Ciroza's late substitues made no such impact, and Rangers were able to see the game through to the full time whistle to record a famous victory, and head through to the 6th round of the cup!
