How could Granite City pull themselves up from the floor to reach the promotional heights of Division 3? A team wounded badly from an earlier battle against rivals Pitfairn Albion, a drawn bloody battle which robbed Granite of a win their manager argued they deserved, but also robbed them of two of their best players.
Granite faced up to a much superior play-off opponent in Super Reds City after finishing second in Division 4, and as manager Mr Deeko later said, it was one they had to be on their toes with.
"I set our team up against Pitfairn to contain them since they'd been scoring for fun, but I knew our quality would get us a goal so instead of going all out, I went for a 1-0 win. Tactically it couldn't have went any better, 9 times out of 10 we win that one, but absolute credit to Pitfairn, they know how to scrap for points when they need to and they did just that against us, in both our games. I like their style and I admire their manager Wd too for his attacking prowess.
"Facing Super Reds in the playoffs was daunting, a much more skilled opponent, we once again delved into the tactical analysis searching for an advantage, we thought we found something but it wasn't enough, we needed to throw them a curve ball. On the night we played a 5 man midfield and 4 at the back to contain them, but going forward we also had to use long balls, a contradiction to playing 5 in the middle but even with 5 in there, we knew we'd be overpowered, but we still had to put up some resistance and playing 5 was our only option.
"Offensively, we could not play through them, or go around the sides, we had to lump it, and that's what we did. To be honest it was the only thing we could do to lessen the advantage they had over us, without our two best players and having to play 5 youth team players, we had to hope this would be enough.
"We fought admirably, and somehow, with some luck found ourselves 2-0 up with 10 minutes remaining. Exhausted, the team conceded but continued the defensive fight until the last minute to take the game 2-1, and promotion was secured....beers all-round for the boys tonight!!"
