Coxy Ladies Wulpen's comfortable situation at the top of Division 4j disappeared in a puff of smoke on Tuesday as they were beaten 1-0 at Dial L for Ladies. The Waders were second best throughout the game. They fell 1-0 behind a minute before half-time and could have slipped further adrift. Their best hope was a smash-and-grab.
The first part of this was attempted in the 61st minute when Alicia Leclercq clattered the home 'keeper Cláudia Sobrinho. The injury Leclercq inflicted was only minor, though, Sobrinho carrying on playing. The Wulpen player was booked for her 'recklessness'.
With Sobrinho's movement restricted, Aurelie Wostijn thought she had taken advantage to level on 76 minutes only for referee Hans Grüber to demur. Grüber was in action again just 60 seconds later as Leclercq looked to finish the job on Sobrinho but only succeeded in completing the one on herself as she picked up a second yellow card of the afternoon.
That was Coxy Ladies' third red so far this campaign. After the previous two, The Waders actually managed to improve drawing situations to claim wins. Not this time though, but then in both the previous matches Wulpen were the side on top when they went down to ten which was very much not the case at MY HOMETOWN.
The Waders started the day with a four point advantage in the table, which means they remain top despite the loss. However, victories for the sides in second, third, fourth and fifth at the start of the day meant the table has concertinaed right up. Indeed, if Wulpen were to lose away to Miscounduct United next Tuesday they would be certain to slip from top spot to third in the standings.
Coxy Ladies boss Janik commented, "we came up against a good team today who outplayed us and deserved their win. It happens. The girls will have to lick their wounds and hope to play better next week."
