Blood Eagles overcome Black Sabbath
Viking South Utsira stunned themselves this past Tuesday by inflicting just a second defeat of the league season on Division 1b's dominant leaders Black Sabbath. Even a Sabbath side shorn of several key names to protect them ahead of a key Xpert Ladies Cup semi-final against The Housewives this weekend still presented a formidable foe, especially on their own turf.
Crucially the Blood Eagles caught superstar home keeper Jun Kinniyaka -- who has an implausible 20 clean sheets from 25 games this season -- on a rare off-day, somehow putting away both the chances they eked out during the match. 22-year-old forward Irja Klovning had the game of her life by a long chalk, and put her side in front early on with a fine header, before senior colleague Anneke Hovland fired the clinching second after the hour mark, her 11th of the season but only her third in the league.
The three points come as a thoroughly unexpected bonus in a competitive division, especially at this stage of the campaign, as the result leaves VSU four points clear of the relegation zone in 4th with just two games left. Somewhat annoyingly Johnstone Cougars produced a comeback win over 2nd-placed Space Chicks with a late 2-1 victory that lifts them to 5th just two points back.
A 1-1 stalemate between Hawkspurs (7th) and She-Wolves (now 6th) left both sides in the mire along with bottom side Fortitudo Culemborg -- who were unfortunate both with injury and an 88th-minute 1-0 defeat against Girls Aloud that keeps the latter a point ahead of Viking but leaves Culemborg on the brink of the drop. They come to Ragnar Rock next Tuesday 5 points from safety and thus if the Norsewomen can dig out another win it will both secure their own survival and doom their visitors.
