Defeat, injury, suspension |
Coxy Ladies Wulpen had a very bad day at home to Athletic Mizil on Tuesday as almost every type of negative outcome came their way. The most basic of these was losing the game 3-1 as Mizil put on a strong showing to power their way to the win. And that despite The Waders taking the lead on 20 minutes when Chloé Bremen headed in a corner. However Athletic had had chances prior to Bremen's goal and took only two minutes after it to respond - from that point on the match was one-way traffic.
Wulpen were not only outplayed, but also suffered misfortune as well as star defender Marie Atheba suffered a 10-day injury, and midfielder Victoria de Waterloo picked up a second yellow card on 78 minutes to pair with her first after 6. The resulting ban kept her out of the second leg of the The Waders' Round 2 Cup clash with FC Nee-Nee on Saturday. That turned out to be a dramatic afternoon as the two sides went the distance. Wulpen came into the game holding a 2-1 lead from the opening leg, but soon saw that cancelled out as Nee-Nee went in front on the night on 12 minutes. And not just in front on the night - their away goal from the opening leg meant they led overall at that stage, albeit on away goals. That situation didn't last long though, as Coxy Ladies levelled on 17 minutes. Or rather Nee-Nee levelled for Wulpen, Elisabete Meira putting through her own net. The rest of the game saw The Waders pushing for a killer second (Nee-Nee would have needed three in response due to the away goals rule) whilst the hosts sought the goal to take things to extra-time. It was Nee-Nee who got it on 86 minutes. After a goalless extra 30 minutes, the match went to penalties. This was twice advantage to the home side after Christelle Onjens missed Wulpen's second kick and Léa Filard the Waders fourth. In between Nee-Nee had missed their third effort though, and they went waste numbers four and five wide as Wulpen goalie Lara Hendrickx proved the heroine - not only did she see off three consecutive penalties, but she also converted Wulpen's winning fifth one herself! Wulpen will now face Division 4e side Banantjejerna in Round 3 Waders boss Janik commented on his side's week "The league match was pretty painful, but at least progress in the Cup made up for it. Wasn't good on the nerves, though"
