New queens show their class against VSU |
The gulf in quality between Viking South Utsira and the Xpert Ladies' best teams, which VelvetAndroid's side somehow managed to bridge last season to claim the league title in their first ever season playing at the highest level, was made brutally evident this Tuesday as they were thrashed 4-1 at home by Ultra Violet LMW.
Having been narrowly evicted from the Xpert Ladies Cup in the 6th round last term by CrashedCar's side, who were on their way to promotion to the top flight themselves, Viking were under no illusions as to the strength of the visitors -- whom Android had cited, in an Xpert Daily interview ahead of the new campaign, as his favourites to lift the trophy in turn this season.
It was thus a surprise when VSU took the lead through Anneke Hovland's 22nd-minute strike, her 9th goal in 12 matches eclipsing her total for all of last season of 8 from 22. However the advantage lasted just three minutes before Lyubov Avilova levelled, and it took just ten more for Andreia Maranhoto to slot UV in front. Margaret Darren followed suit to extend the lead before the hour mark, and Geirfinna Sverrisdottir's last-minute coup-de-grace only emphasised the latest changing of the guard. That goal knocked the Utsirans down into the relegation places on GD, while Ultra Violet go three points clear at the league summit with a nearly perfect record heading into the midterm doubleheaders as they look to become the Xpert Ladies' newest queens.
Viking must now regroup for consecutive league fixtures against Bucovina Panthers, who suffered their first defeat of the term at home to Black Sabbath, who leapfrogged them into 2nd. This weekend though sees the home leg of the Utsirans' 4th-round Cup tie with Diver City, who currently sit 7th in Division 1b.
